“Do you ever think it will stop?” Karin asked as her head was leaned up against Jair’s shoulder.
The two sat close together on the second to bottom step inside of the apartment entrance as they watched the heavy rainfall bounce off the concrete. Jair had his head kneeled down against his arms that sat rested on the top of his knees. The two just remained there.
“It all depends on Mother Nature and her antics, whether she wants it to stop or continue.” Jair spoke, finally replying to his girlfriend’s question about the great percentage of rainfall.
She nodded her head as she sat back up in a normal posture. Her left arm suddenly laid across the bent-over back of Jair’s as she slowly rubbed it in a up and down motion.
“You finally get the chance at living your dream, Jair!” Karin said as she showcased a small but noticeable smile, trying to look in the face of Jair whose head was still kneeled against his knees. “All that hard work and training is finally about to pay off!”
Excitement in the tone of her voice, she was happy for Jair and his opportunity to finally get what he wanted and live out his dream of being a superstar, gain respect and some publicity shine. It was a dream the two of them had discussed a while back. Make it out of this ‘hell hole’ into a better environment to grow.
“I can only hope that this works.” Jair said, sounding somewhat doubtful in a sense. “I have a tough one right off the blocks … I’ve only been in training for three months, to me, not enough!” He continued, this time shaking his head.
“Well just use what you have to the best of your ability. You’ll do fine!” She said, hoping to restore hope where that cloud of doubt was hanging.
Again, there was a block of silence after Karin’s words. Jair had remained silent, more silent than she has seen him before. He had let go of his knees as he went back to a normal posture as well. He placed both of his hands over his face, letting out a muffled sigh.
“I’ve put too much into this to give a bad impression. Too many early morning wake ups for this to go downhill in a matter of minutes.” Jair continued to down himself. “You know how I am about anything I put most of my focus into, I want to succeed!” He said, putting much emphasis on the word succeed at the end.
Karin pats her man on the back a few times more as she just lets out a deep, long sigh as her eyes troll upwards into the ceiling, as if thinking or pondering about something.
“You wanna’ go to the store with me?” Karin asks Jair as she holds somewhat of a hopeful smile, waiting on his answer.
“Nah, I would but I think what I’m going to do is go cross town for a minute!” Jair stated as he took a stand from the seated position on the steps. Karin’s hopeful smile turned into a slight pout. Jair straightened up his grey tee-shirt that was underneath his black opened hoodie as Karmin stood up, in front of him as she looked into his eyes.
“You sure you’ll be okay?” She asked, confirming.
“Yeah, I’m good, Ma’ … Just you be on the safe-side!” Jair answered as he leaned in, kissing Karin on her cheek.
Exiting her and the apartment building complex, Jair zipped up the hoodie as well as flipping the hood part on top of his head, as he made his way in a jogging fashion down the steps. Karin looked on as far as she could until he had disappeared. Holding her hand over her chest, she turned around as she slowly made her way up the stairs.
Golden Boy Studios – {Wrestling School}
May 30th 2012 – 3:50 pm
Back to where it began – Jair found himself in front of the school that taught him all that he knows right now. Behind the mastery of his mentor, Juan Ramirez and his trainer, Jair had shown flashes of major potential that needed to be shown to the world. He was given this opportunity by the work of the strings that Ramirez seems to pull. Three months later, he has a lineage of moves that can take over. Arriving in the rain, Jair held a perfect smile on his face as he walked into the building, eyeing the new breed of students under the helm as Juan stood by with a toothpick in mouth and a dead-serious glare.
“Yo Juan?” Jair called Juan, tapping him on his right arm.
“Damn dude, how ya’ been?” Juan asked as he turned around, seeing my surprise arrival.
We performed our usual handshake and hand dap as he went back to keeping an eye on the young incoming students who were put to a test against each other. Juan’s trainer, Dan Guaverez watched on as Ramirez focused his attention back to Jair.
“So what brings you here?” Juan asked. “Heard you signed up to Action Packed Wrestling! Pretty good fit for you!” Ramirez said, congratulating him.
“Yeah it is, got my first challenge too!” Jair said, with an expression of mixed emotions. Juan quickly noticed it.
“Don’t worry about dem’ dumb ass ‘butterflies’ son. Once your entrance pops on, you’ll easily forget about that shit!” Juan said, chewing down on the toothpick. “Who you up against?” Juan followed up with a question.
Jair scratched his head as he looked to have forgotten. “Shadow, yeah, they call him Shadow. Some tall dude, probably a ‘rookie incoming’ hazing attempt. I’m probably gonna’ get my ass handed by him!” Jair said as Juan quickly lowered his head, shaking it.
Juan ‘lightly’ punched Jair in his shoulder as he glared at him. “The hell you talkin’ about?” Juan asked him, somewhat of anger hinted in his voice. “Whatchu’ mean “get your ass handed” … Look, I didn’t bring you into this school to learn and then lose!”
Juan looked at him as Jair’s head and eyes remained forward, both watching on at the kids and attempting to avoid Juan’s glaring eyes. Juan took a moment to look at his students as he looked back at Jair.
“Yo, follow me!” Juan said towards Jair who followed Juan two steps behind as his following led to going up a flight of stairs that were all the way down at the end of the room.

Upstairs the two were seated in the small office that was Juan’s ‘peace and mind’ area of relaxation. A stereo system, a complete theatre setup, it was more of a living room than really an office area. There wasn’t a big office desk, just a small one that was suitable for what was needed. A few file storage cabinets and a basic spinning chair. The rest was suited like an entertainment room, the theatre setup and four comfy sofas that were in the shape of the letter “U” as a small coffee table was the centerpiece. Juan was on one while Jair rested comfortably on the other one.
“I did you a favor, Jair. I already knew who you were facing, so I took the opportunity to do a little ‘scouting’ trip for you.” Juan said as he grabbed up one of the remotes from off the small coffee table that was centered in the middle. “I grabbed up a few sources help and they applied me with some old footage.” Juan continued as Jair’s eyes were surprising at best.
“Word?” Jair simply followed up in an answer with as he nodded his head. “You always on top of everything, homie!” Jair complimented the quick work of his mentor.
Juan simply nodded. “I’m a perfectionist at the shit I do, REMEMBER that!” Juan replied, ending strong with his reply. “You really shouldn’t have a problem with this dude.” Juan told Jair as Juan hit the “Play” button on the remote.
“Oh yeah, Not much of a ‘threat’ then?” Jair questioned Juan as he followed along at what was being played.
Juan nodded, not saying much as he directed the video feed, rewinding and forwarding like an actual replay from a televised sports game.
“He’s mostly been a dominant asset in the tag-team division. He’s a rookie to the singles contest. He may look powerful and tall but he ain’t much of a serious threat.” Juan said, calling it down the middle. “You know what I told you about tall people … You—“
“…Kick their legs out from underneath them and like a tree, they will fall!” Jair quickly jumped in front, finishing the statement as he shot a grin at Juan.
“That’s the deal, homie!” Juan said with a ‘thumbs up’. “I know you know what to do … Do what you need to do, get that money to support yourself and your girl, man. Better yet, save up to get out of that fucked up neighborhood!”
Jair nodded his head as he then let out a sigh.
“I know, I’ve been thinking about that ‘move’ for quite some time. I want to get out of there but you know how it is when you’ve been there from the start. It’s hard to leave for the better!” Jair spoke, opening up for a moment as he gazed at the wall in front of him.
“I know where you coming from. I might’ve not been born here, but my raising has come from these mean streets. Shit, I dealt on those blocks, life on the line just to make a hustle. You have a rare opportunity where you at … don’t lose focus of that and make the best from it!” Juan, with real talk put it down as Jair just bit his lip, taking the advice.
“Thanks man, I needed that!” Jair thanked Juan for the words as Juan nodded in return.
“You better go head’ and get yourself ready for your debut. All will be a breeze once you come out from the back and into that ring. The crowd will be behind you!” More advice Juan dropped onto Jair’s shoulders as Jair held a grin that was wide.
Both men got up as Jair shook hands with Juan as the two ‘bro-hugged’ on it before Jair made his way in the form of exiting out of the office.
“Thanks for everything. I’ll catch up with you soon!” Jair told Juan as Juan ‘flopped’ back down on the sofa, sticking his two fingers up in the air giving the “peace” sign. He slowly forwarded through some more of the scouting clips as all grew to a fading end.
Jair: “Aight, you can start that ‘thang’ up!”
[ REC • ]
The current scene opens up slightly blurry before growing clear. It’s outside, drizzling rain with a hint of cold that can be told by the little bit of fog that is coming from Jair’s mouth as he breathes. On the recording, it’s his girlfriend, Karin who stands back a few feat from what is a 50-gallon barrel that is used for heat. Small flames lit on the trash and branches that helps to keep it going, even with the slight drizzling rain falling. Jair has his same grey hoodie on as he has his head bent down towards the ground, possibly gathering up what he has to say about his upcoming match, his debut match. Karin is heard giggling in the background as she yells at Jair to hurry this up so she can go back inside to warm up. Jair raises his head as he then clears his throat.
Jair: “This is the beginning to a ‘hungry man’s’ journey. Behold Jair “Amir” Hopkins, soon to be on you television screens soon. I hold this crazy opportunity in my hand to do something big. I was given this chance at fame, I’m about to grab it by its horns and ride this bitch till’ it falls down! Everybody been trying to figure out who I am ever since last week’s appearance on Meltdown. Already I gained several different labels, mostly in the negative light from some viewers. A ‘hoodlum’, ‘another wasteful talent’, ‘troubled’. Already, not even ten minutes in, I’ve gotten the premature views of the fans that watch this television program. However, I will look to change their minds this week.”
Jair: “I go up against a ‘mountain’ for my first attempt. No name, just a moniker, “Shadow”. I hold no clue to what it means but from what was given thanks to my mentor, my homie, I got enough visual to see that he isn’t much of a serious threat. He’s tall, muscular, and powerful in a way but that’s about it. He’s a tag-team specialist as I’ve saw his films and read up on him. He’s like me right now, starting out in the ‘Singles Department’, trying to claim fame like he claimed fame in as a tag team partner. I hold many ways to come at Shadow and his towering height. Those that look at me and judge me with sudden quickness will see that this kid isn’t a ‘waste’ nor is ‘trouble’. I might live in a negative-impacted city, but I stay on a positive level. Ignore this hoodie, the ‘saggy’ pants, these gold teeth, this entire outfit. Look deep within and you will see where I come from.”
Karin switches hand with the camera, still focused in, she zooms in on the face of Jair as he lowers his head back down as he bops it up and down as the flaring heat from the barrel grows warmer than before. The sounds of the streets come into play as cars zoom by along with a few sirens sounding far in the background. Jair rubs his hands together in a slow, circular motion.
Jair: “I’m hungry for success, Shadow. I know you’ve been here before me but that stat doesn’t matter. I’m all about the current. Singles division, you haven’t done a single thing. I haven’t done a single thing …. Equal. I’m short, you tall … Advantage goes on your end but you shouldn’t rely on that. I’ve seen mofo’s like you go down in an instant. Power and Height doesn’t matter. Speed against power, you can’t catch me. However, I get you on that canvas, shit will be over with … I’m just saying. I’m not cocky, I’ve been in that gym practicing my moves. I’m looking to take your fatigue down to minimum and then work you down from that stand point. I’m the ‘Good Guy’ here with a hint of lemon-flavored bitterness. I respect you but I’m not going to throw ‘sugar’ on you. I’m hungry to be great in this profession.”
Jair: “I’m sure I’m going to commit a few ‘slip-ups’ against you, it’s bound to happen. You do hold experience inside the ring from an angle but don’t expect me to do it again once it happens. I’ve never been one to commit the same penalty. I soak up knowledge as I go. Thing is, come Monday night on ‘Meltdown’, Shadow … you will be put into the spotlight. People expect you to pound me down and make me your “bitch”. That’s what the vote is in the public’s eyes. I see it is either or, whoever makes the mental mistake in the end. You’ll understand why they club gave me the name “Jair, The Great”. Again, not meant to be cocky, just watch and see for yourself and all will be simple understanding in the end. You’ve been quiet all week, that lets me know you hold some sort of worry in your system about Jair Hopkins.”
Jair comes with a chuckle as he claps his hands together a few times.
Jair: “I love the fact that you seem to show somewhat of a worry factor, but you shouldn’t worry about me. You should worry about yourself. Are you really up for this task? Can you deal with an “L” in the column? Can you bounce back if you fall off the damn trampoline? That’s what you need to check yourself on. Hopefully you can pull out your best and we can set the mood for the rest of the night but if you don’t want to, I’ll gladly take and bask in the glory. I’m comfortably fine with that option if you want.”
Jair takes one glance into the camera before waving off.
Jair: “That’s a wrap, love!”
Karin hits the “Stop” button as she puts the camera down to her side. A thumbs up from her leaves Jair with a smile. He leaves from the barrel, letting it burn itself out as the two take a stroll down the small and narrow alley. The rain was still coming down as drizzles but nothing more than that. The scene faded to black.
