Walking Into the Fire
“Still Frame” – Boise, Idaho – St. Luke’s Hospital
August 13th 2012 – 10:30 am
“I need you right now
I need you right now”
(Echoes)
Unconscious, unresponsive, the body of Jair Hopkins lay straight and aligned centered on the bed. An IV tube and other measuring hoses fixated to his body, his neck is in some sort of brace, signs of tear from the match earlier in the evening in that singles match against “The Soul Of Philly” TJ. Although he was alert after the funny business at the end of the match, he later fell into deep, deep sleep, leaving the medical staff with question marks to the reaction.
Simply being, it was due to over-working. Since coming into the company, he’s been traveling back and forth, as exhilarating as it was, he never would expect it to be this serious as to simply knock him off, even if highly-energetic, it was like a machine over-heating, at a point when needing to be shut down, it will do so. Hopkins was still out of it, as he didn’t even realize that his lady, Karin had left her job to scurry and make her way to Idaho, putting up serious dough she had saved for the future, a two-way ticket to Boise. Sitting beside Jair, holding his hand, watching his eyes, she came closer to him again, near his ears before whispering …
“I need you right now …”
A sight of tear strolled down the left side of her face as her grip grew tighter. Little did she know, he was burned, tired, but he was growing conscious. His eyes remained closed as he tried to slightly peek without showing.
“Seriously, come on …”
She looked even worse than the moment before. Her grip was locked tight as he slowly opened his eyes. She was looking downwards, shaking her head. Jair remained focused on her as he looked for her eyes to trail back towards him. She looked back as her eyes widened before her arms found their way around the head of Jair as she gave him a kiss on the lips.
“I almost thought …”
Jair shook his head.
“Nah love, just a minor exhaustion on top of my strained fucking neck!” He said as he felt the brace around his neck. “My whole damn back area hurts like a bitch!”
“I’m just glad you are alright.” She said, sounding relieved.
Jair gave a short smile, satisfied of her quick appearance but then it hit him…
“Wait, how did you get here?” He asked.
She rolled her eyes, “Are you really that ‘out of it’ to not know? C’mon … by plane, man.” She said, shaking her head afterwards.
“I know by plane … I mean how did you get out of your work duty?” He asked as she got it.
“Oh, easily, I told my boss and she let me leave so I could get a ticket and all and make my way up here. My family comes first before work.” She said, shooting another smile.
They both sat there as Jair remained motionless, trying not to create any other situation. His back and neck got the worst of the deal while suffering the loss via disqualification thanks to some ‘knucklehead’ he was somehow worried about his opponents leg after that attack. Even though they fought to the end like warriors, and although taking a mass of powerful shit from TJ, Jair still had respect for the man, he was only attempting to do all he could to make his name more relevant and move up the rankings. They had the same vision. One thing they will differ on is the ending result. He had Jair, he had him in his first-ever done trademark submission but Jair failed to give up. He was so close but no one will ever know.
Everyone seem to think he would tap due to having all that weight on his back and being locked in that angle and bend, but Jair was a tough guy and people were realizing that. Tapping is something he does not do. Yes, he faded out after, but don’t take that as a weakness. You ask yourself in that situation, would you tap out or would you fight it.
“You’re the best, ma!” He said, giving her a wink of the eye.
“I know right?” She asked, lightly rolling her eyes.
Jair nodded as he tried to turn his head, but the pain sent a stiff shock, putting him back to the starting point quick.
“Shittt!” He expressed himself as the pain hit the nerves.
Karin looked worried as she scratched above her eyebrows, looking at him.
“You don’t need to prove yourself any further out there to them scoundrels, Jair. You have a champion-like heart already. Don’t put yourself in a much worse situation!” Karin said, pleading to Jair to not attempt to fight at the highly-anticipated Shockwave event.
“Ma, you know I can’t flag this one out. I had two previous opportunities and lost em’ all due to lack of focus. Fuck if I’m going to flag this event.” He said, quickly upping his tone of voice.
Karin throws her hands in the air, letting him know she had nothing else.
“I’m just saying, you can’t even move … You got nine days and you are here in a hospital bed, spending one of those nine days. I’m just cautious, babe.” She said, full of concern in both her voice and the stress lines that lightly textures her face.
“I know you’re concerned, Karin but this is the job I signed up for. I’ve been in for a good while now, I’ve felt the wear of the ropes against my back, lashings and so forth. I really need to prove myself here. They want to call me out, do so, do your best, I look to hear it.” He said, staring at the ceiling.
“I got three people looking at me as the weak-link here after last week’s long-standing match with TJ. One man who is a crooked politician and I have a man who hates me for the fact that I’m aligned with the champion … who defeated him. It’s a crazy world but I gotta’ fight through it.” Said Jair who just bit at his bottom lip, still glaring at the acoustic ceiling and its lighting inserts.
“I just want to win, Karin. I’ve gone through too much fucking shit on this Earth to just fall back now. Excuse my French, but you’ve been there with me, so you know.” He continued, as his expletive tone grew serious and serious every second.
Karin let out a deep, emotional sigh.
“I know … I know, we’ve gone through it. I just don’t want to lose you, physically. I know you’ve worked hard and although things haven’t gone as greatly as you wanted, you strived to make it go your way.” Karin nodded as she closed her eyes, saying it with her hands was still locked with Jair.
“When you think they will release you?” She asked, wondering.
Jair slowly shrugged his shoulders as he winced a bit.
“I dunno ma’ … I guess after they do some more testing or something.” Jair said, not sure of what was to come. “Right now I’m just laid up in with a push button for Morphine. The only legal way to get high.” Jair says as it causes laughter from Karin.
“You stupid! They are going to monitor your usage on that.” She told Jair, slowly shaking her head in laughter still.
“I could care less Karin … If the pain gets to a point, I will be pressing like a possessed madman!” Jair was able to crack a smile.
They both were able to share a laugh as it was a good sign that there was sunshine. She still felt in doubt for the situation that he was going to put himself into come his release from the hospital but he was determined to prove people wrong, other rookies and the veterans of APW that he was an elite player. He was ready to take on the responsibility as a champion. Losing out on the previous two, he wanted to cap it off on the third, becoming the hopeful new Pro-Life Champion. He wanted the number one contender’s match two weeks ago but now, he gets to do it for the title, on a even bigger stage.
Action Packed Wrestling was about to truly receive a shockwave … from a pint-sized athletic son of a bitch.
“Are you going back or you going to test your manager’s buttons.” Jair asked Karin.
She looked at him, rolling her eyes.
“That job doesn’t come close to first. Sure it’s a job and I get paid, but they can deal with me being gone for a couple of days. YOU are my job right now!” She said, a smile, tapping her finger on his nose.
Let's get lost tonight …

Fully recovered, relaunched, and re-enthused. Jair Hopkins was back on track. After what was along stay at St. Lukes, he was fully rested and with a vivid smile. Taking course of the past thirty-six hours, he had a lot to smile about. One of those reasons, he was just a few days away from doing something that seemingly everyone has been doubting, especially by one of his opponents. To be yanked back at that torque and pure, animal-like strength and to not be broken in half, that means something. It wasn’t being stupid or being a complete tool to risk his health and his body. With every match, he gives a hundred percent, he never gave up because someone would wave a red flag in his face, he’d keep trying to get where he wants to be. That’s who Jair Hopkins was and he looked to prove his worth in the next few days, leading up to that once in a lifetime matchup.
As he sat by himself at the airport, waiting for the next and upcoming flight back to New York, Karin had left late yesterday for her flight back. Today was his turn as he wanted to make a special visit before taking off to LA. As the bridge of the black skull cap rested upon his forehead, his eyes trailed as he let out a fluttering sigh making the sounds as if someone was under water. He was received as the ‘weakest-link’ in this match, taking every single word out of Kash and turning it to nothing but dust. That’s all it would ever be, in the mind of Jair.

J-Hop: Isn’t it funny how people can say shit freely but when you’re in the same area of space, they tend to quiet up. Yeah, I’m seeing that shit real clearly. As I’m being taken care of in the hospital, getting re-energized, it so happens to be today that I check my phone only to see a stack of messages from my mentor, Ramirez with quotes that belong to Jason Kash, it’s like four long-length messages of shit that Jason Kash said out of his mouth, no thinking before speaking, just blasting. Then he goes on and talks shit on Twitter. I mean … who the fuck is this cat? Sure, his history … fuck his story. That shit is erased right now. What he did in the past means nothing … except for that of last week, leading to this week’s massive pay per view, Shockwave.
Jair shot a smile as he rubbed his chin afterwards, taking short stares up at the board to see if his flight is ready.
J-Hop: You want to talk about my will to not give in to pain. Yeah, TJ could’ve easily put me forever in disability rehab for a broken back but even if that attack never happened, I still would be lying in that ring, not tapping. See, I’ve lived hard life for so long, I don’t believe in giving up. You on the other hand, you rely on your shitty tactics to get you through but somehow, they didn’t help you out on the last Asylum. While I may have faded out from a submission, at least I didn’t get rolled up and defeated. If I did, I own up to it … You, you just simply say it was “luck” and that lightning never strikes in the same place twice. Mother Nature can do ish’ when you believe she can’t. It’s the same with me. While you obviously see me as the weak-link, I’ll look to take away any further comment that comes out of that trap of yours.
J-Hop: I have to give thanks to TJ, he got me ready for what I will likely be seeing at Shockwave. We both have our own battles to fight, hoping to gain revenge. It’s a process but the more Kash keeps talking shit, he actually makes everything fall right into place … with ease. Sykes, thank you for the ultimate embarrassment of Jason Kash. It gave a lot of people smiles to see him fail at such an indecent time to fall off the horse.
J-Hop: Speaking of high horse … or elephants in that factor, the politician of APW. The skeezer of Asylum. You know, when I came in to the company, Anthony Bailey told me to never trust you, even with a straight face. You were like all the rest that live that politician life. But as a champion, you are the longest reigning champion and whether crooked or not, I have to respect that. You’ve given it the prestige it needed but now … Now is the time for a change. Now is the time where you hand over the jewel that it is. Everybody will be watching you to watch you lose. You have three candidates, looking to overtake your position at the head. That’s not a fun defense, to have three men after you for what lies around your waist. Now I know you probably want to skin me white for joining in on that beatdown of your little ‘party’, you can do so but understand that I’m not like Kash, I don’t roll over to let you just light me up and take slow puffs. I’m not like Sykes, who sees the world as a joke. I’m not one to play games.
J-Hop: Sykes, thank you for opening Kash’s Pandora box. You made upset history last week. You shut that bastard’s mouth up with a victory roll. You syked him out. He’s going to aim at you first for that. Me, I’ve gotten a few good tips that will eventually help me out. Till then…
J-Hop: Ciao!
