The scene opens… to darkness. There are several moments of silence.
“Hit the light!”
Before the camera, a pool of light appears as a spotlight shines down, illuminating a figure sitting inside a wrestling ring on a folding chair. Logan Alexander looks back at the camera, dressed in his usual ring wear, ring jacket and sunglasses.
“Logan Alexander… in the spotlight…”
He smiles at the camera.
“Wouldn’t that be a shocker? I’ve received next to no attention since arriving here. It’s not a complaint, just an observation. Unlike most of the roster, I haven’t got history with the company, been here that long, or been involved in anything notable. I was just another fresh face who kept quiet and stayed out of the way.”
“Wrestlers thought nothing about me when they step in against me, whether alone or with partners. Thus far I’ve done what I’ve needed to. I’ve won more than I’ve lost and made my chances count. Now I’ve got a big opportunity before me… I just have to survive and outlast seven other competitors.”
“Being the overlooked man has advantages. I was the last person to qualify for this match, essentially an afterthought to round out the field. I’m under everyone’s radar as most are focused on Lively or Aubrey, and I’ll exploit it for everything its worth.”
Logan lifts his arms and points around the ring.
“Look around, you won’t see anything of interest beyond the ring. My philosophy for this match is that nothing beyond this ring matters. No dramatic display playing up the ‘trip to hell’. No generic thugs showing up. No railing at people that don’t matter because I’m high. For me, there are NO distractions, just this match.”
“I need to be focused too. This is not a good match to be in. It’s a little better than that garbage wrestling battle royal, but not by much. Eight people in this match and six revel in the crap that is going to be involved here. I hate hardcore. It’s just a crutch for people who can’t get the job done with actual wrestling. Williams, Pennington, Shadow, Mannie, Wilson, and Lively all like this match though. Just watch and listen to them… a violent, reckless lot all out for the North American title. What an embarrassment. They should be promoted so they can peddle their garbage wrestling for the Xtreme or Suicidal title. None of them have the honour, integrity, dignity, or respect to carry a championship on Meltdown. That’s why Aubrey and I are here.”
“We’re here to raise things to a higher standard. I don’t need weapons to be brutal. I bloodied and battered Ashton Daniels last week with nothing but legal moves and holds. What keeps me from doing the same now? Pick a Chaos Theory and when you’re in for a minute, or two, or three, do you think you’ll be able to answer a ten count? When your back and legs are screaming in pain or you’ve been choked out in the ring do you think you’ll be able to get to your feet? I don’t think so. Who needs a weapon when you have actual skill?”
He smiles confidently and removes his sunglasses. His looks shift to distaste as he speaks again.
“I don’t need other people to attack my opponents. I don’t have to blindside people with weapons. I don’t have to attack people after matches. I don’t need to beat up extras on camera during the week. Six of my opponents do that, because they can’t get the job done otherwise. Without that crutch… they’re just another group of competitors that would open shows for the rest of their careers. But don’t think that holding moral ground makes me naïve. I’ve been in plenty of hardcore matches in my career. I’ve been bloodied, battered and broken in every one of them, but I’ve always given as good, or better than I’ve gotten. I know how to use weapons when I have to and I won’t hesitate to flatten any of you with whatever ends up in my hands. I just won’t go out of my way to do so. Why break my rhythm in the ring to grab a weapon when I can just as easily put someone down with a move? Why stop to pick up a weapon when I can drop someone on it? I’m smart about how I do things. I won’t compromise my position for the sake of hardcore.”
“It’s a dangerous, chaotic environment. I know I’ll take a beating. No one ever walks out of a match like this without damage, but I’m about as ready as I can be for it. The physical preparation is nothing special, but the mental preparation is a challenge. People think they’re ready to handle whatever comes their way, but seven people are going to find out that they weren’t as ready as they thought. At the end of the night, the limits they thought they had surpassed will be sitting before them still. That stems from the fact that the majority of my opposition refuse to acknowledge their own limits and failings.”
“I’ve had to confront my failings for this match. I’ve had an underwhelming run thus far with one bad loss and a mistake that cost me another win. But because I acknowledge them, I can use them to improve. Look at my opponents… The champ has the title but can’t win a match on his own. The big man loves hardcore yet his last championship success in hardcore was measured in minutes. A man with the ‘most dangerous move in wrestling’ hasn’t won a match in a month. These people claim themselves as the man who’ll walk out with the North American title, yet they can’t see the barrier that their limits imposed ahead of them. They refuse to acknowledge limits that will halt them sooner than they expect.”
“I may not walk out of this match with the title. Outlasting seven people is a challenge, especially under these rules. But I’m not content with the thought of walking into this match, putting on a good show, and leaving without the title. I’ll save that rationalization for if I lose. Until that becomes a reality, I’m in this to win. I’m not rationalizing how a loss is a good thing for me because I’m not ready to concede anything. I don’t care how long the odds are, whether people take me seriously, or how many people have me written off already. I want to win this match and become North American champion, to carry a title and represent APW, and show that there are people on Meltdown championship worthy who aren’t arrogant, self absorbed, offensive, or cowardly. Someone deserving of the championship should carry it, elevating it and making it worthwhile, instead of sitting back living on past glory only they remember.”
He shakes his head slowly, frowning a little.
“Many people in this match had chances to prove themselves, but haven’t been able to. Instead they drift aimlessly until a match like this gives them opportunity to accomplish something. Then there are some who haven’t had their opportunity yet and aren’t giving it up easily. I want the challenge of being champion, to face the best competitors week after week. I want a true test for myself. I don’t care how steep or high the mountain is before me… I won’t walk away without doing my best to scale it.”
“This week is my first major test, but it’s something unique. I have never been in a match quite like this. Whenever you’re in a match like this, there’s always the chance someone will catch the lucky break and sneak out with the win, having their hand raised because they did just enough at the right time. I don’t want to win that way though. I’m going to mix it up in the ring all through this match. I’m ready for this marathon. It’s going to be a non stop gut check… but that doesn’t worry me so much. I’m confident I can equal anyone in this match in terms of stamina or endurance, and I’m smart enough to outmaneuver anyone in this match and find a way to keep them down for a ten count.”
He smiles again, looking confident, almost arrogant.
“While I’ve got plenty of scores to settle, they aren’t going to rule my decisions Sunday night. Those passions fuel me and drive me forward, but I’m going to use them like I did on Meltdown.”
“Pennington’s the one I want to put out of this match first. Some weeks ago you sent me a message and it only pissed me off. Aubrey put you in your place already, but for what you did I’m going to make sure your title hunt comes up short. You’ve failed to beat Lively. You couldn’t measure up against Aubrey. What chance do you have now? You’re filler here and you’re going out quickly. Sienna runs around backstage cleaning up the messes you make and we’re going to find out if see can put your pieces back together properly after you get dismantled Sunday.”
“Williams… you had real potential. You BEAT Lively, but from there you’ve stumbled from one embarrassing outing to the next. You’ve won one match since and you didn’t realize you were booked. Last Meltdown, you wanted a cage match with my injured partner but she knocked you out for the second week. You wanted an easy match, but it didn’t work out that way. That puts you next to Pennington on my list. But by the time I’m done with him, Aubrey will probably have knocked you out again. Don’t feel bad though, you couldn’t win a match of your own choosing so how are you going to win here? But when Aubrey leaves you in a heap, we’ll have an M&M sundae sent to you. It’s free with three KO’s.”
“Now, Wilson is a mystery to me. I’m under the radar, so Wilson must be in a hole between his matches. I would consider him a legitimate tough guy, if not for the scripted thugs he beat up in his last promo. In the ring, I don’t see much to be impressed about with Wilson. He’s had a run of success over rookies and a pinfall on Lively… but Shadow beat him. Now Williams beat Lively and he’s a non issue, why should Wilson be any different? He hasn’t proven much of anything yet. He’s a good fighter, supposedly really tough, got street fighting and martial arts. That’s great for one on one, how does that help with seven different opponents to guard against? I’m willing to match my grappling, wrestling, and brawling skills against his. He’s kept himself under wraps, and now we’ll find out if it’s because he’s a well kept secret or because he doesn’t measure up.”
“Mannie had been on a tear till last week, beating everyone in his way. Sounds great, doesn’t it? But look at his competition… Tek, Comikaze and Educated Money. He’s been coddled since his return to action. I think that was a good move so he’d heal up and stay in ring shape… but it negates his credibility. A few months back he whined for a title match like he deserved it. He’s got one now, but he didn’t beat anyone of note for it. I want to face you in the ring Mannie… because you have something that belongs to M&M. You were handed OUR tag title opportunity… something else you didn’t deserve. You’re like the APW charity case, having stuff handed to you. Then those of us who work for and deserve it get passed over. So feel free to keep your crap forever. One thing you won’t be getting is a singles championship. Last week you had a chance to show you deserved this match, but you were caught sleeping at the end, and snapped your winning streak. Here’s your next big match, but don’t expect better results. Some people are looking to put you out here and I’d love to make a statement by doing so, and then see about getting your tag title shot, but one thing at a time. Instead, I’ll just put this week’s events in a context you can relate to Mannie… this Sunday, you’re gonna get lit up, smoked, and put out.”
“Shadow… I should address last week. I gave you the title last week because I don’t need a prop to be important. Feel proud that you carried the North American championship longer than the Xtreme title. It’s not like your glory days, but considering you retreated to Meltdown like a scolded dog after Evan Envi beat you at Shockwave, I guess you take what you can. Yet, you think I have no balls when you ran from Overdrive. You have officially impressed no one since then, but it’s simply the reoccurring pattern with you. The giant walks around, beating up little guys you can handle, but when defining opportunities come your way, you crumble and someone else walks all over you. This match is your element but so was the one at Shockwave. What’s changed? The big dog still barks, but is the bite much of a concern? I don’t think so. You’re a big man, but you need more than size to walk out a winner. I’ll just fell you like a tree. Who you knocking out when you’re prone, Stumpy? I’ll take you out myself if I have to, but I once you go down the first time, everyone’s gonna pitch in to keep you down. It’ll be like your chess metaphor. You’ll be the king… slow, weak, and trying hard to avoid the inevitable checkmate. You’re the biggest man who constantly comes up short.”
“Next, Lively… who has been running scared for weeks now. We know the thought of losing that title has become totally unbearable to you. You’re obsessive. You’re paranoid. And you’ve reached the point where you realize that everything you’ve done is coming back to bite you. You’ve done everything you could to antagonize your opponents and now you realize just how big the mountain before you is. With the failures you’ve had in the last two months, the odds of you pulling out a win aren’t likely. Pinned by Wilson and Williams, Shadow had you beat until Mannie saved you. The only success you’ve had was against Pennington and when Sabur partnered up with you. So, how are you going to handle seven opponents? Sabur carrying you again or you hoping the rest of us take one another out? I know you’re desperate and that makes you dangerous. You might win if you use that, but desperate people do stupid things, and you do that enough at your best. Most people in this match can beat you but nothing in your recent history suggests the reverse is likely. You lucked into the title a couple of months ago, but you haven’t proven worthy of holding it. So whether you want to or not, you’re going to stand aside. You think you’re a winner whether you retain or not, so you’re fine with losing on Sunday. The rest of us will make it reality for you.”
“Aubrey… we had our warm up for this a month ago. You know how things will play out to an extent. We both want the belt and we’re not going to step aside for each other, but I have no malicious intent for you. After this match, regardless of outcome, we’re still a team. During this match we may work as a team, but we can’t both leave with the title. You’re not going to be one of my preferred targets, unless it’s just you and me. I love the thought of this match coming down us, even if it ends up leaving me at a disadvantage. But make no mistake… I’m not going out of my way to save you during this match. Partner or not, I’m not risking my chances for yours, unless it benefits me. Others in this match think I’m going to drop everything to save you, but they are fools hoping for an edge. If I have to choose between finishing an opponent or saving you… I’ll apologize to you later. I’m not here to make it easy for you or prop you up. I expect you to do the same. When we competed, you lost by a second, so you’ll have to do better. You’re one of the smartest people in this match and after your cage match you’ll have inspiration for this one. You’ve can get the job done and you’re one of the favourites in this match, which says a lot given the rules. I know you have what it takes to beat everyone else in this match, just as I know that I can do the same. But can you beat me? I look forward to seeing you try, but I’m ready to beat you, even if it’s just by one second again.”
Logan stands up and looks down towards the camera.
“This is the hardest match I’ve ever had, but the talent aren’t unbeatable. I’m ready to prove I can beat anyone here. People think this match will be hell… I disagree. Hell is what you’ll experience the moment you realize you’ve failed. The match is the trial you have to survive and I’ll fight my hardest to avoid that fate. I’ll push through every blow I take until I hit my limit or I’m the last person standing. When I think I have nothing left, I’ll dig deeper and see if it’s true, or if I can keep going. Seven others are going to take this trip with me. One of us will stand tall. I plan to be that one.”
He stares at the camera quietly. The scene fades to black.
“Hit the light!”
