“Life affords no higher pleasure than that of surmounting difficulties, passing from one step of success to another, forming new wishes and seeing them gratified.”
- Samuel Johnson
Here we are, one last step before going to Rasslemania as a tag team. Knoxville and I have overcome the odds in recent weeks.
But this step may be our most dangerous of all.
Niobe Nightmare has a mean streak longer than some of the men here in APW. I’ve watched her matches and she’s just as skilled as she is violent. She’s not the biggest competitor even amongst the women...but dynamite does come in small packages. Niobe has clawed and fought her way to get to where she is and she’s not just going to no show an opportunity for gold. Her high flying skill is leading her great places...but is she really ready for Buckson Gooch and Tommy Knoxville?
Trevor Hyatt...Trevor has a big mouth...but when you are able to back up what you say, you have the luxury of doing that. Wrestling is in Hyatt’s blood. He’s a second generation wrestling star. As a young man, I remember reading some of the highlights of matches from Seth Hyatt...I find it intriguing that I will be fighting his son this week.
Tommy Knoxville and I will be facing our toughest battle this week...and rightly so, the winners of this match have a chance to do something special at Rasslemania. There is an art to tag team wrestling, an art that is lost on competitors like Trevro and Niobe. They would stab each other in the back for a shot of getting some glory. Tommy and I aren’t wired that way. I have Tommy’s back. I want to help rebuild the tag team division.
Tommy may do this a little more salty than me, but I’ll be dishing out a beating with some Southern Hospitality. On Monday Night Meltdown, we’re going to see new life breathed into the tag division.
Gooch farm is waking up nicely with spring calving season under way. The thermometer going up for the past few weeks, Buckson Gooch has found himself busy with getting the farm ready for spring. Today the temperature is somewhat cool. If you don’t like Arkansas weather, just wait a few minutes. There seems to be a snow storm that’s coming to Arkansas, and Buck has to get things ready before he hits the road and heads to Meltdown, followed by a publicity tour and then Rasslemania! Buck has just thrown his dufflebag in Fungus (his trusty ‘74 Dodge truck). He turns his attention to the barn before he has to leave it, but he hears the screen door slam and the awkward sound of very large feet that a teenage body hasn’t grown into hitting the porch.
Jimmy Gooch catches up to his Dad a tad out of breath.
Jimmy Gooch: Mama, just told me that you’re hitting the road and won’t be back for a week.
Buck nods.
Jimmy Gooch: Can I go, too? It’s my Spring Break!
Buck looks rather puzzled at the boy...well, young man now.
Buckson Gooch: Go pack your bags son, tell Mama we’ll be back in a week. I’m sure Mac can handle things on his own.
Mac Bane had offered to come and take care of the farm for the week that Buck had been gone. Buck was sure that Bane wouldn’t mind if Jimmy went with him. Even though Bane was a little let down when Jimmy quit going by J-Mac, he understood the teenager’s need to step out on his own.
Buck realizes that adding Jimmy to the itenerary so late will be a headache, but it will be worth it. Spending some quality time with his son on this trip will be something that he’s looking forward to.
This winter was an odd one as a few of Gooch’s heifers didn’t catch with the artificial insemination and were bred with clean-up bulls. That did work, but Gooch is still waiting to calve, and there are some 10 cows that are ready to burst. Gooch usually tries to time it where the main cow herd calves in the middle of February, the later ones are in the first of March and by mid-March he’s ready to start working on seeds.
Buck gets back up on the porch and sits in his rocking chair. He contemplates how glad he is that Mac Bane is coming to watch his farm. He is able to rely on Bane and knows that Bane will do his best.
Gooch is getting the same feeling about Tommy Knoxville.
Buckson Gooch: I sure like that guy’s hard hitting style.
Buck almost seems surprised by his outburst. But he stands by it. He puts his hands behind his head and takes in a deep breath of sweet, Ozark air.
Tommy Knoxville is the kind of guy who would rather be sitting in a hospital bed than lose. Knoxville puts his body on the line to help insure victory. Buck feels pretty good about this week’s matchup. With a similar drive to win, Gooch feels that Knoxville has turned out to be a good tag team partner. The slam of the screen door lets Buck know that he’s in trouble.
Annabelle Gooch: BUCKSON GOOCH!...Why did you agree to let Jimmy go with you without asking me?
Buck knew that it was important to word this the right way.
Buckson Gooch: I thought it would be a good opportunity to spend some father son time with our growing young man. Plus, I know I can rely on Bane. He won’t let me down. He can run this farm for the week. He’ll be here in the morning.
Annabelle’s grimace evaporates as she thinks about Buck spending quality time with Jimmy. She also knows that Bane is good as his word and will do a great job. It will be good to have Mac around the farm again to help out. Annabelle sits down and sinks into her rocking chair.
Annabelle Gooch: You have a lot on your plate this week. Are you going to be able to handle it?
Buckson Gooch: Absolutely, Annabelle. The tag match on Monday is going to be a big deal. Hyatt and Niobe are strong competitors...but they don’t have the drive that Tommy and I have. They don’t have the rapport. But whatever, we’ll give our best regardless of who we face.
Buck gets up and kisses Annabelle on the forehead as Jimmy drags his suitcase behind him and throws it in the back of the truck.
Jimmy Gooch: Let’s roll, Pops! We’re on the Road to Rasslemania IX!
Annabelle smiles and Buck and slaps him on the butt.
Annabelle Gooch: Come home a champion, Buck!
Buck and Jimmy jump into the truck, before Buck drops in he blows Annabelle a kiss. Then he starts the truck and they drive off kicking up dust.
