Repetition…
It’s another week, and the same story’s playing out again too. I step into the ring for another tag match in another random match generated situation. I don’t know who comes up with these, but this is the third straight tag team match I’ve been in while staring across the ring at Kaylyn Evans. How many times am I going to have to beat her before I get to face someone of quality and substance?
I’ll admit that last week was an improvement since I got to step in against Jason Kash. He’s a quality competitor even if he’s been spinning his wheels on Asylum. That match was an unofficial handicap match since Christian Kane couldn’t help but get involved after falling flat in his Asylum debut. But other than new dance partners for myself and Kaylyn, nothing changed from the last match we’d had on Meltdown. I walked out with another victory as I expected to, with Aubrey nailing down the victory over Kaylyn this time.
You were so hung up on trying to beat me Kaylyn. I dispatched your partners at ringside and you figured you could put me down. You didn’t have a crowbar and three other people helping you though. Instead, you didn’t notice when I tagged in Aubrey and kept you distracted, even let you ‘put me down’, so that Aubrey could turn out your lights and pin you. So your run of futility continues… maybe one day you’ll get the job done. After all… some people still believe in miracles. You’ve even got your usual wrestling partner with you for this outing. Surely you’ve got to be thrilled for that. Christian’s been waiting for another shot at me since Survive and Conquer.
I’ve been looking forward to another match between us Christian. You gave me quite a fight at the end of January, especially since you had a few helping hands from Alexander Duvall and Robina Hood. I remember you walked into that match thinking you had me all figured out… but you ended up learning that when people think they’ve figured me out, I change things up. You walked out disappointed. It was the second time you’ve come up short against me. Well… third time’s a charm right? Havok thought the same thing. I don’t bow to conventional wisdom like that though.
Simply put Christian… you’re going to have to do what I’ve been telling your partner to do for weeks… step up your game and give me a real fight. After Survive and Conquer you haven’t exactly impressed anyone. You came out flat the week after our match and needed Havok to do the bulk of the work to get you a possible North American title match. The week after that, you did show up and gave a much better performance on your last Meltdown, beating Havok before falling short to Young Mannie. But what happened two weeks ago? You had a match with Shane Borderland. You came out flat and ended up getting beaten more easily than anyone would have expected you to. Maybe it doesn’t bother you Christian… I know you’ve had showings like that before, like the first match you had with Donald Deruty. But when I consider that you have unresolved issues with me… seeing you come out and offer such uninspiring performances in the ring makes me wonder if you’re really up to the task of beating me. It makes me wonder if you really want it. It makes me wonder if you have what it takes.
I don’t care what state of mind you show up in for our match. I’m expecting you to walk in there and be better than you were at the end of January. I’m going to pretend that the last month hasn’t happened for you and that you’re still a red hot star who’s blazing towards the top… because I’m going to come into this match with the intention of taking the rising star that you should’ve been at this point and driving you straight into the ground once again. I’m hoping that you’ll come out this week and give everything you’ve got. I want to see if you’ve got some fire left, because I’ve beaten up your partner enough times that it’s pretty much a foregone conclusion what’s going to happen between her and I this week.
The only other thing I’m curious about is how many friends you two bring to the ring to help you out this week. I’m yet to get a clean fight out of either of you… but seeing as I’m still carrying a perfect record against the two of you, I guess it wouldn’t really matter anyway, now would it?
This brings me to the one detail that might actually pose a serious problem. My partner this week… Jair Hopkins. So… you know what I’m going to do? I’m just gonna lay all my cards on the table here for you Jair. The only thing that matters to me right now at this moment, is winning this match. It doesn’t bother me that you’re my partner this week. I don’t really like you. I know you have issues with my partner Aubrey. I suspect that you don’t trust me. But simply put, I’m willing to put any issues, real or perceived, we might have on hold so that we can function as a team. I pride myself on being able to keep my personal issues aside from my business issues inside the ring. I’ve never backed out on or backstabbed my partner in a tag match. It just doesn’t happen, and I’ve partnered with people I can’t stand being with and still won. If you need proof, call up Overdrive and ask to speak with A.C. Smith. He and I will never partner up in the future, but in the past we’ve had plenty of success.
So Jair, I leave the ball in your court for this one. I have no intention of crossing you this week and I’m willing to work alongside you to earn a victory. I hoping that you’re willing to do the same. We let Aubrey and Anthony deal with their issues against one another and then you and I can take care of the pair across the ring from us. It’s a simple solution to the issue at hand. Don’t make the wrong call on this one Jair… it’s no time to make mistakes.
The camera opens to a scene in Logan’s office at his training school. We see him sitting in his chair, turned at an angle to the desk, with his feet propped up on it. He slowly rocks the chair back and forth as he holds a pen in one hand with the cap of it held lightly between his teeth. He rolls the pen back and forth between his fingers and he seems to be thinking something over. He then pulls the pen away from his mouth and glances towards the camera.
Do you think I’ve done something? Or maybe forgotten to do something?
There’s a brief pause.
What do you mean?
He lets out a breath.
Since I lost that glorified handicap match to Young Mannie about a month ago, I feel like I’ve been relegated to something like second class status. I’d been a singles competitor for months with an occasional tag match alongside Aubrey during that stretch. Now I’m just a guy who’s thrown into tag team matches with a different partner while facing another person in a similar situation. So… do you think it’s punishment for something I did, or haven’t done?
I don’t think it’s either. You haven’t done anything that would warrant such a punishment… if you view it as being such. You’ve just moved onto a new brand. You’re one of the new people to the show, so that might be why you’re being put into these tag team matches now.
He frowns and looks away from the camera.
I’m one of the new guys, so I’ve become filler material? I came off a solid three month run on Meltdown as North American champion, winning match after match where I’ve had to run solo against multiple opponents and a constant cycle of outside interference. My first match on Asylum was the same sort of thing. Tag match with a third person sticking their nose where it didn’t belong. This week, looks like the same circumstance. I just wonder who’s going to try and screw me out of a victory this time.
Well, the two people responsible for most of those recent infractions against you are in the ring. The other two that seemed to orchestrate most of those activities before have their own problems on Meltdown.
He snorts audibly and throws a mildly annoyed glance at the camera.
Doesn’t mean someone else won’t try. Every time someone gets put in their place, someone else decides they’ll take a crack at it. First it was Evans. Then it was Kane. Next time… who knows? But hopefully then I’ll at least have my partner at my side and not be stuck in another thrown together teaming. In that case, I won’t even complain about having to face, and beat, Evans for the fourth straight match.
He smirks slightly.
You really shouldn’t dismiss her just because you’ve won your last few matches against her.
He just rolls his eyes.
I keep hearing that, but what’s she done to prove my thinking has been wrong? She hasn’t won a match since her return. Heck, she hasn’t won a match since late November or early December because her last four matches have been against me, and I’ve won them all. I’d take her as a serious, credible threat, but really what’s going to change from one week to the next? She’s busy deluding herself into believing that every week will be different than the last, and she’s been wrong each time thus far. Could this week be different? Possibly, but that doesn’t make it likely.
He looks away from the camera again.
She threatens me every time we face off. ‘If Logan does anything to me, he’ll be in so much trouble.’ I’m tempted to put that claim to the test just to see what happens. It might actually give me a fresh challenge. I might get to face someone motivated then. I’m bored of listening to Evans carrying on like a broken record… ‘Logan did this. Logan did that. I’m gonna teach him a lesson.’ I’ll give her credit for perseverance, but it’s not getting results. There has to be a time where you acknowledge you’re out of your depth and you move on to something that you can handle. She might able to hold her own, but until she learns to respect her betters, she’s never going to beat them.
And what if she does beat you?
He snorts softly and looks back at the camera, seeming amused by that.
Then she’ll have had her one miracle. A fluke win proves nothing though. I said it a few months ago, but it bears repeating. She’s good again newcomers, but that doesn’t cut it against me.
He smirks smugly.
What about Kane?
Logan raises and eyebrow. He takes a few moments to slide his feet off his desk and then turn to face the camera fully. He seems to consider his response for a little while before he replies.
I’m not sure what to think about him. He’s made bad decisions time after time here in APW. He selected me as a rival by attacking me from behind. He partnered up with Evans, which was a waste of his ability. He became a tool of Duvall and Harrison to try and get ahead, but he wasn’t up to the task. Now he’s just being used by Evans, so I wonder if he’s just going through the motions or not. I kinda feel sorry for him. I see lots of potential in him, but he’s got nothing to help his direct and focus it.
The seems to be a look of pity on his face as he stares into the camera.
He’s on his own, but he doesn’t realize it… or maybe he does, but doesn’t want to do anything about it. Evans doesn’t even support him now. Since she’s been back, she’s never been in his corner. She returned and attacked me to help Mannie win a championship and cost Christian the rematch he’d wanted. The following week, she helped Mannie retain against Zing, and when he tried to walk out on Christian in their match, she stayed in the back. I did more for Christian that night than Evans ever has. I got Mannie back into the ring so Christian had a chance to win. Evans didn’t show up until the match was over, but only so save Mannie from the beating I was giving him. Notice a pattern?
She’s been helping Mannie more than her own partner.
He nods slowly.
Yeah.
He leans back in his chair.
Where was Evans for Christian last Asylum? Nowhere to be seen, but he followed her to ringside to give her some help in the tag match. Christian’s just become a tool for Evans. She doesn’t trust him. She doesn’t support him. She works with him because he’s got the same enemies, but that gets you only so far. That won’t help them beat Aubrey and I. That won’t help them beat Jair and I. They aren’t a team… and that’s why they’ll fall short.
And what about Jair? He’s your partner this week and you’ve got to figure out how to take care of things alongside him.
Logan shrugs slightly, but he looks unconcerned.
He doesn’t trust me. I don’t expect him to. All he needs to do is not lose his focus for this match. Aubrey’s under his skin, but she has nothing to do with this match, so he’s gotta put that aside before it does him in. If he decides to cut loose on Kane and Evans, I’ll let him. I’ll stay out of his way and be ready if he wants to take a break or needs some help. I have his back because my motivation is to win. I don’t plan on blowing this match. My goal this week is to prove another point to Evans and Kane. I’m ready and I bet Jair is. So we’ll just wait see what they can do and if they deserve what they want to claim. They’d better bring it cause we certainly will.
He smirks at the camera, and the scene then fades to black.
