Monday Night Meltdown in Oakland, California is still going on. The crowd is enjoying the show. Still to come tonight is Robina Hood versus APW North American Champion the Guv’Nor in a Test for the Best qualifier match and the Guv’Nor’s decision on whether he goes to Overdrive or Asylum, a decision two weeks in the making. The faint echo of the cheers and jeers can be heard throughout the building closest to the arena inside.
That echo, however, can not be heard in the trainer room. Inside this room, the APW trainers and arena medical staff are set up in case.
Inside the room, Gabriel Krown sits on a doctor’s table. He is still dressed in his wrestling gear following his match with Yanzel Holmes. The second generation wrestler from Denver, Colorado has a cloth on his forehead, which was busted up by Holmes during their match. He also has an icepack on his head. A member of the medical staff is shining a light in his eyes, checking on his condition. They are fairly sure he has a concussion, but need a few more tests to verify this diagnosis.
A few feet away, Connor Murphy is pacing back and forth. His suit jacket is open. He is still wearing those round framed gold sunglasses of his. He stops pacing and places his hands on his hips, looking upwards to the ceiling.
Krown obviously is not happy about what happened in the ring tonight. He looks and sounds rather upset. Murphy seems upset, but he also looks to be trying to control it so that his partner stays calm.
Krown: “That bastard. Who does that peasant think he is, attacking me like that? I am going to go kick his ass right now!”
Murphy: “What?”
Krown starts to stand. Several members of the medical staff and his tag team partner approach him. He stands and staggers a bit, sitting back down.
Murphy: “Sit still, will you? It really doesn’t help us if you aggravate a concussion.”
Murphy moves away from Krown as the medics go back to checking on his tag team partner.
Krown: “I’m fine. They don’t know if it’s a concussion.”
Krown takes the cloth from his head presses his hand against his head. He pulls his hand away, looking to see if he is still bleeding. He then presses the cloth against his head.
Murphy: “No you’re not.”
Krown: “I am still well enough to kick that peasant’s ass all the way back to Los Angeles.”
Murphy: “That is true, but you’re no good with a concussion.”
Krown: “I don’t have a concussion.”
Murphy: “You may.”
Krown: “Okay fine, but that still doesn’t mean I can’t go out and beat the hell out of Yanzel Holmes.”
The son of the Irish wrestling legend, Sheamus Murphy, shakes his head and looks at Krown.
Murphy: “No, I am going to beat the hell out of him at Meltdown. You are staying home and getting better.”
Krown: “Oh come on!”
Murphy: “I don’t need Yanzel taking you out during our match and you out for any longer.”
It is at this point that Hannah Storm arrives for an APW.com exclusive. Murphy turns to the door, looking at her as she enters. Krown does not bother looking up as she walks into the room.
Hannah: “Connor Murphy, Gabriel Krown, tonight did not go as well as you had hoped. Yanzel Holmes…”
Krown turns and tries to get up, but again staggers and sits back down.
Krown: “Didn’t go as well as we had hoped? That worthless peasant cracked me over the head with a steel chair. I may have a concussion! I am out for almost a month now because of him. So yeah, I think it is safe to say that we are not entirely happy with how tonight’s event went. This wasn’t how we hoped the night was supposed to go. I was supposed to go out to that ring and break his legs.”
Hannah: “Well…due to what happened in the ring tonight, it has already been announced by Meltdown General Manager Sienna Harrison that you, Connor Murphy, will meet Yanzel Holmes inside at Meltdown in Las Vegas, Nevada in a Roulette Match. And she also stated that this will be your final confrontation.”
With his index and middle fingers, Murphy moves Hannah’s mic towards him.
Murphy: “Yanzel, you surprised us. And you surprised us not because you swung a chair at my partner hard enough to maybe give him a concussion when you clearly couldn’t throw a punch hard enough to knock out a woman half your weight, or really, anyone you have ever wrestled since your debut. No, you surprised us because, as far as we can tell, for the first time in your entire life, you have decided to stand and fight rather than quit and run away. We honestly didn’t think you had it in you given your past history of giving up when things didn’t work out for you or go as you wanted. We thought you’d have already run away from us.”
Krown: “Well he did get himself disqualified against me. He couldn’t beat me, so he hits me with a damn chair. That’s kind of cheating. What sort of example is that for the kids?”
Hannah: “But you guys attacked him with a chair last week?”
Krown: “We’re wrestling royalty. When we do it, it’s cute.”
Murphy: “Yanzel Holmes tried to take my tag team partner out of action. We have only tried to drive him out of Action Packed Wrestling. That does not mean we were trying to end his career, just get rid of him. We’d have taken either option.”
Krown: “We really would have.”
Murphy shakes his head.
Murphy: “But no, it seems for the first time in your entire life, Yanzel Holmes, it seems you have decided not to quit. Unlike the LAPD and your boxing career, you are actually sticking with this. We were really surprised by that.”
The younger brother of “the Great One” Mark “the Majestic One” Murphy, pulls off his round framed, gold sunglasses and places them top of a counter he is standing near.
Murphy: “So it has gotten me to thinking that maybe this is not tough enough for you. Maybe, just maybe, things are not bad enough for you to turn tail and run like you do every time. Well that’s fine, because I have no problem walking into Las Vegas and making this the single most difficult night of your life Yanzel.”
Hannah: “This match is a Roulette Match, meaning you do not know what type of match it will be.”
Murphy: “So?”
Hannah: “Well won’t that be a problem for you, not knowing what type of match it will be?”
Murphy: “No, it won’t be.”
Krown: “Usually doesn’t matter to us.”
For a moment, Hannah appears surprised. She is rather shocked about how blasé the second generation wrestler can be in regards to not knowing the stipulation for his match.
Hannah: “How can it not be? It could be anything.”
Murphy: “And I do not really care. When it is all said and done and Meltdown in Las Vegas is in the books, I am going to be the man standing victorious in the ring. I am going to be the guy who just ended Yanzel Holmes after kicking his ass all over Sin City.”
Hannah: “But don’t you care what type of match your match with Yanzel Holmes is going to be?”
Murphy pauses and thinks for a moment.
Murphy: “No”
Krown: “I kind of do.”
The son of the Irish brawling legend and heir apparent to the Murphy wrestling legacy glances back at the heir of the Krown wrestling dynasty. Hannah glances back as well.
Murphy: “You do?”
Krown: “Well I’d rather you and Yanzel settle the match in an actual match. I doubt anyone wants to see the two of you in a Bra and Panties Match or a Tuxedo Match or something along those lines.”
Murphy: “Yeah, any of those would be bad.”
Krown: “A ladder match could be interesting.”
Murphy nods in agreement. He scratches under his chin, and then rubs the back of his neck.
Murphy: “Yeah. It could be interesting, but what would we be climbing up the ladder for? Neither of us has a title and neither of us is going to put money on the line.”
Krown: “I don’t know. Some sort of contract, or a prize of some kind.”
Murphy: “Maybe.”
The technical wrestling member of Sang Réal groans.
Krown: “Just hope it isn’t a Thing on a Pole Match.”
Murphy looks up at the ceiling, and then puts his hands on his hips.
Murphy: “Oh God, not a pole match. I hate those things. It’s just two guys trying to climb a corner. I mean at least in something like a Ladder Match, there is the effort and action. Pole matches never really make for a good match.”
Krown: “I know, right? Now one ever talks about the greatest Pole Match they ever saw. They joke about them a lot.”
Murphy: “They really do.”
Krown: “Just as well. Really nothing we can put on a pole except a chair maybe.”
Murphy: “A chair or a suit maybe.”
Krown: “A Flag Match wouldn’t work either. You’re both American. Though could use state flags.”
Murphy: “That would be a terrible idea.”
Krown: “Well, just hope it isn’t on the roulette wheel.”
Hannah: “So you really do not care what match you face Yanzel Holmes in this week on Monday Night Meltdown?”
The brawler half of Sang Réal turns back to the Meltdown backstage interviewer.
Murphy: “Well, except for the matches I just mentioned because those really wouldn’t solve anything. In fact, each one of those seems more terrible than the one before it. However, I have no problem beating Yanzel Holmes in whatever match the wheel lands on. Yanzel Holmes is nothing to me.”
Krown: “For over a month, we have been trying to take Yanzel Holmes out. We really have no idea why, but he just cannot seem to take the hint that no one wants him here. No one is making Yanzel Holmes t-shirts. No one is cheering for his message of “if things don’t go the way you want, quit and try some other way, then keep quitting until it all works out”. The only reason Yanzel Holmes will ever get an action figure is because they decided to include him as part of a build your own figure set.”
Murphy: “Now the fans may not like us, and we admit that. We know they do not. But they react to us. The only reason they cheer you Yanzel is because they like the people you are wrestling less than they like you. They cheered you when you wrestled Robina Hood because they don’t like Robina Hood.”
Krown: “Then again, neither does the sun, garlic, anyone with blood in their veins, small animals, her family, and children who fear she will lure them into her candy house to eat them.”
Murphy: “Right now Yanzel Holmes, the only reason anyone is paying attention to you, the only reason anyone even gives half a damn about you is because of us. We are the only thing making you worth anything. And as of Monday Night Meltdown in Las Vegas, I am going to drop you like the worthless sack of crap you are.”
Krown: “And he can more than definitely do it.”
Hannah: “But won’t there be some issue as you have not competed as a single’s wrestler in over a year?”
Murphy: “I am a former American Championship Wrestling Specialist Champion. I held that belt for over two months, which was the second longest reign in the history of the Specialist Championship. The only way to win a Specialist Championship match was to either knock you opponent out or make him submit. For over two months, that’s all I did. I either knocked them out or I made them submit. Now you don’t think I can do it again Yanzel, you are mistaken. I am far more confident in my ability to knock you out than I am in your ability to knock me out. After all, if you couldn’t knock a woman half your size, what can you really do against me?”
Krown: “Nothing, except start swinging a chair because you know you are not going to be able to win the match.”
Murphy pulls his tie off and tosses it aside.
Murphy: “You tried to take my partner out tonight, Yanzel. You may have given him a concussion. That keeps him out of action for at least almost a month. That doesn’t help us get any closer to becoming APW Tag Team Champions. And that is not the part that really bothers us.”
Krown: “Well, it’s not exactly something I am comfortable with.”
Murphy: “It is the fact that you tried to take him out. See, he is a second generation wrestler. Neither of us have children.”
Krown: “Well, no children that you know of.”
Murphy: “True. Neither of us have any children that we know of. Now my brother, Mark, probably has a few illegitimate kids with a few Asian school girls, but we don’t know. And I doubt anyone is lining up to have Noah’s crazy babies.”
Krown: “No one at all.”
Murphy: “Meaning that, for the time being, the lines of two great wrestling dynasties end with us. You are not the guy who is going to end those bloodlines. No. We have things we want to do. Things like winning the APW Tag Team Championships and take you out once and for all.”
Krown: “And unlike you Yanzel, we can get the job done. And we have respect for wrestling.”
Murphy: “That is really all this comes down to Yanzel is respect. You do not respect this business. You do not respect the history or all the blood, sweat, tears and sacrifices that have been made year after year, day after day and mile after mile of the people who came before you.”
Krown: “We do. We were raised in this business. We grew up in it.”
Murphy: “When our fathers started out, there were no big companies. There were no national television deals or pay-per-views. No, they drove or they flew all over trying to earn a living, trying to make it in this business and they did. They missed birthdays, graduations, and so many events to make it. To us, this is a way of life. This is what we were born to do. To you, this is just a paycheck. That is insulting to us, our fathers, and every one in the back who shed blood, sweat and tears and sacrificed to make it to Action Packed Wrestling.”
Krown: “We may be arrogant, but we at least respect wrestling and what goes in to making it in this business.”
Murphy: “Yanzel, now maybe somewhere along the line, along with apparently failing to teach you to never give up on something, your Meemaw and Pop-Pop failed to teach you respect. Clearly is something you need to learn. At Monday Night Meltdown, you are going to learn respect for this business, because I am going to beat it into you. I don’t care what type of match it is, you are going to learn respect and you are going to learn your place.”
Krown: “You place is at our feet like every other peasant out there.”
Murphy: “Yanzel Holmes, we are wrestling in Sin City this week and believe me when I tell you I am definitely going to sin when I get you in the ring.”
Krown: “We took out Warren Peace and now it’s your turn.”
Murphy: “That’s Murphy’s Law.”
Krown: “That’s Checkmate.”
Murphy: “We are Sang Réal”
Hannah looks like she is about to say something or ask a follow up question, but does not as Murphy picks up his round framed gold sunglasses and places them in his shirt pocket. He then turns to the medical staff members to check on his partner.
