"Happy Endings T.V."
fades away to a shot of parting curtains. Shane, with the Happy Endings camera, pushes it through the curtains to the backstage to find a packed arena. A new song 'Baby' is fading out as Sally Talfourd takes up centre stage in the ring. He stays hidden - Shane and his camera - but manages to capture Sally's rare house show appearance. The crowd is just as loud as when she walked out - booing and jeering her. She stands there, waiting patiently, until all the noise dies down.
[Sally] Thanks. *Sally looks around to the audience with steely determination* This? *Sally points at the ring* This is rare. House shows? They're not usually my thing. But with my move over to Asylum and ... recent events ... I thought I didn't just need to come to this one, I needed to speak to you all about something important. *Sally takes in a deep breath* Ladies and gentlemen, I'm out here to draw a line in the sand. You know, the past few months I've been coming out to the ring. I've come out and said what I've thought to be true. That people likeyou - the fans of this business and of this company and, formerly, of me - only want one thing: Violence. You want to see someone destroyed, their life ruined, their moment in the spotlight to be filled with agony and pain and misery. And you know, the longer I went on saying these things, the more and more I saw you people cheering and screaming and loving what happened in the ring.
Sally starts to pace the ring, dragging the mic cable with her. She goes to speak again, stops herself, then finally starts up.
[Sally]Every time CJ and I ended up in the ring, I saw your eyes light up. All the way up to the pay per view, I saw you all paying your money, lining up for hours, waiting until you could see that last, big match between us. Test for the Best set the stage for that. Everything was on the line. Everything was at stake. It had all come to that moment. If ever you were going to see two people fight tooth and nail for everything, go at each other harder and with unrestrained hate, then you were going to see it at Test for the Best. I walked out and I was booed. Maybe it wasn't you people booing me, but I know you hate me as much as them. They booed me like you just booed me coming out here. And then you cheered CJ. You cheered for him like he was the greatest megastar in that ring that night. And still, I thought you justed wanted that one thing: Violence. The fans, you cheered for CJ because you knew that we has going to get the worst beating he would get that whole night, right?
Sally stops, mid stride. She stops walking round the ring, staops treading circles into the mat. She stops and looks out to the arena, to the fans, who seem to be hanging on her words here. maybe it's because she's talking about their new darling CJ, or maybe it's because they're expecting something from Sally here. Shane zooms in, catches Sally with ... quite a sad look across her face.
[Sally] Then I lost. I was pinned by ... by the better man that night. I was beat in a match that, frankly, I was second best in. And when I sat up ... after CJ had pinned me ... I looked and I saw the fans. I saw the same sort of faces as all of you, but you were cheering. And you weren't cheering because I had given CJ everything I had. No, you were cheering because I had given him everything I had ... and he had won. He had weathered months and months of everything I could give him and he still managed to beat me.
I saw that CJ had given you something to believe in ... when you had no one else to believe in. You had no one to put faith in ... until CJ came along. He had given you all a reason to believe in someone again. And after I had turned my back on you all ... well, you needed it. CJ had earned it. He had gone though any fire I lit just to prove himself. Just to prove that he was a man worthy of your faith. I saw all those cheering faces - kids, adults, men, women - and I was reminded of the person I used to be in APW.
The person I should be in APW.
The crowd are back into an applause, cheering Sally on. Cheering her back to the person she used to be. She holds up a hand to try and quiet them down.
[Sally]So the reason I'm out here? I'm out here to draw a line in the sand. A line not for anyone else but me. This line will be my reminder of the line not to cross ever again. On that side of the line, that's where the Sally you've seen for the past few months stands. That's where the hate and the contempt and everything I fought against for so long is. And I promise you right here, right now that I'm not stepping back over that side of the line. *The crowd start to applause, cheering Sally on* In fact! In fact, starting today, I'm walking in the complete opposite direction! I'm sorry for putting all those people that had been loyal to me through the trouble I did. But I promise you that I'll give you a reason to cheer for me again. My first show at Asylum, you're going to see the Sally Talfourd that achieved the best. The Sally Talfourd that dominated APW. The Sally Talfourd that you loved. Thank you, and tune in Sunday!
Sally's music hits the PA as she waves to the crowd. She takes a bow to the side she's facing and then comes up with a beaming smile. She steps through the ropes, jumps to the floor, then high-fives some nearby fans. Any idea that she's turned from the fans for good is gone now as she poses for some photos and hugs those people who desperately hang over the rails to get nearer to her. Shane, in the meantime, whips back behind the curtains. There's some fiddling with the camera, then the feed cuts out. There's a pause, and then
"Sally Talfourd"
is handwritten across the screen, in purple. Before it fades out and the episode comes to a close.
