"See you at Shockwave!"
"Those words played in my head over and over like a broken record. See you at Shockwave."
"Every moment of silence, See you at Shockwave. Every time I closed my eyes, See you at Shockwave. When I put my head down on the pillow at night, See you at Shockwave."
"And to help that scumbag Even Envi. A man who has spat in the face of every single member of the APW roster. He thinks he's too good for us. Too good for you and Hollywood. But you came to his aid like a damsel in distress. Taken out by our own tactics. Strength in numbers, you...Even...Jenny Knite...Maybe even Duvall! Why come and stick his nose into it?"
"All you've done is awaken a monster. A madman who knows no boundaries. Jace you did this. You brought this on yourself. You thought we were amidst a feud before? I am going to end you! I am going to single handedly finish NewGen Rising! It's not a matter of a faction feud. Black Hand versus NewGen? No longer...I'm your worst enemy! It's now Chris Madison taking on Jace Savage!"
"SEE YOU AT SHOCKWAVE!"
Chris Madison sat on his large cedar deck in the rear of his house in front of a large fire pit. The metal pit had a slate border around it. The crackling of the burning sent red embers flying into the air as the yellow flames danced unpredictably below. Madison placed his left hand on the rear of his head and stroked his fingers through his wavy hair. His right leg rocked side to side as he zoned into swaying flames in front of him. He tried to find some piece of mind but something just didn't sit right with him.
The sliding glass door behind him opened up and his brother Nick exited the house with two beers in hand. He walked up to his brother and sat down in a chair beside him. He extended a beer out to Chris. No response caused Nick to nudge Chris on the shoulder with the beer. With a slight turn of his head he reached across his body and grabbed the beer. He twisted the cap off and put the cold bottle to his lips.
"Man it feels like its been a minute since we could enjoy a brew together!" Nick smiled while he reflected the brotherly bond. While Chris traveled from appearance to appearance Nick felt imprisoned while maintaining their warehouse training facility.
Taking a break from his beverage he responded with, "Yeah my travel schedule has been crazy lately. Virginia to Halifax to Philly up to some dump called Medicine Hat. It's nice to finally get a chance to catch my breath." It had been a busy couple of weeks but that's what made Chris. His urge to find competition.
"No overdrive this week so where to next," Nick questioned with sincere curiosity. He lived a missing part of his life through his older brother.
Chris thought for a moment, trying to keep track of his schedule. "First it's Calgary on Monday for another round of a tournament. But a bit more important is the following Sunday in Detroit."
They looked at each other and simultaneously muttered, "Shockwave..." Chris took another swig from his beer bottle as Nick continued to pry away at him. He truly lived vicariously through him. "Nervous about your first pay per view appearance?"
"Never nervous...Forever eager!" Chris knew that the pay per view served as a grand showcase for the world to see. "It helps that I've got some unfinished business to take care of."
"NewGen Rising?"
"Pfft, more like NewGen Declining...once again Brian Hollywood and Jace Savage just can't get themselves enough. Before it was comical. Their feeble attempts to compete reminded me of..." He stopped for a moment and looked at his brother with a sinister smirk. "Please take no offense to this but they reminded me of a baby brother trying to keep up with the older brother! They're just not at our level. And now there are stakes on the line? A future tag title shot? Niobe and I are not going to let this opportunity slip."
Nick strayed away from the conversation as it turned down a more serious route. "Ahh, Niobe Martin. The things I would..."
Chris cut his brother off before he made any remarks he may regret. "Don't go there. That's Tommy's old lady. He has fucked up closer people to him for less..."
"Alright...enough said." Nick took a final chug of his beer before placing the bottle down between his legs. "Tommy is alright with you teaming up with his lady?"
"Yeah, he trusts me. He knows its strictly business between Niobe and I. I think it also helps he knows I'm not going to let anything happen to her in that ring. I'm a very loyal person to those I trust. And I trust Tommy and Niobe most of all." Chris stops talking as he gets distracted by the vibrations coming from his cellphone which had been stuffed into the front pocket of his camouflage cargo shorts. He pulled out his phone and looked at the caller ID that displayed the name "Frankie Morrison". He pushed the button to send his phone to voicemail and stuck it back into his front pocket.
"All good," he asked after observing Chris's body language. His concern was met by a simple nod of the head. "Let me guess, Frankie?"
He shouted "BINGO" in return. "I don't know what it is but he just doesn't get it. In these moments, when I get that chance to sit back and unwind, I don't want to be bothered about business."
Nick was always more of the optimistic brother than his elder. "Maybe it's important..."
"And maybe it's all bullshit!" Once again Chris is interrupted by the vibrations in his pocket. Assuming its his business manager he reluctantly pulled it out again to look at the caller ID. He let his frustration take over as he huffed while shoving it into his pocket again after sending it back to voicemail.
"Maybe you should answer. You never know it could be important. He has called twice in a matter of five minutes." Nick rose to his feet and lifted the empty bottle up from the floor. He stood by as Chris took a final chug out of his beer. He handed off the empty bottle to his baby brother. "You want another one?"
"Why the hell not!" Nick walked inside through the sliding glass door. He walked into the adjacent room which was the kitchen and rummaged through the refrigerator and pulled out two more Leinenkugel Summer Shandy beers. He brought the beers back out by the fire pit and handed one to Chris. "Thanks man, these really hit the spot."
"Seriously though...If he calls again you need to answer!" Nick sat back down in the chair he was nestled into earlier.
Before Chris could even mutter a word the vibrations went off like an alarm in his pocket. He sunk down in his seat trying to pretend as if it wasn't going off. He could feel Nicks eyes burning a hole in the side of his head. "Fine!" Chris reached into his pocket and pulled his phone out, revealing that it was indeed once again Frankie. He answered the phone and put it on speaker. "Yeah Frankie, you're on speakerphone..."
"Where are you?"
"Home" Chris and Nick looked at each other curious about the question. "Why?"
There was a moment of awkward silence before a cryptic message. "She's here Chris, She's back..."
Nick didn't understand it but Chris looked as if he had seen a ghost. He quickly jumped out of his seat and looked around while holding the phone in his hand. "Did you speak to her?"
"Speak to her? Of course...the first thing she did when she landed was call me. But I have to warn you, something seemed off. I have never heard Kiyomi like this. Has she tried to contact you?"
"No...nothing yet. I've been with Nick all day and only you have called me. Should I expect her?"
"She said she was going to wait for you. I don't know what she meant by that. Something seemed off. Have you been home all day?"
"Of course not. I was at the warehouse all day. Nick and I just got back. We're having a couple beers, shooting the shit..."
The phone conversation is disrupted by the blood curdling screams of a young woman. Nick and Chris look at one another realizing that it sounded as if it came from inside the house. "What the hell was that" he shouted through the phone without a response. Chris had put his phone down on the chair he was resting on. Frankie tried one more time without any success, "Chris?"
Chris and Nick walked into the house and made their way to the staircase which was situated by the front door. Before ascending upwards they notice the glass pane to the front door was shattered and the door was wide open. The two men slowly crept up the staircase and noticed only one of the bedroom doors were open, the master bedroom. They inched towards it as moans of a young woman in pain echo throughout the second floor. Chris takes the lead and pushes the door to his bedroom fully open to find his ex girlfriend laying in his bed with a kitchen knife stabbed into her midsection. Blood has engulfed his king size bed and Chris didn't hesitate to jump in and grab a hold of Kiyomi. He turns to his brother and immediately instructs him, "Quick Nick, call nine one one!"
Kiyomi reached up and grabbed a hold of Chris's hand. She smiled for a moment while she laid in his arms. A moment she has longed for since he left her to return to the states. "I always loved you..." she whispered with her final breath.
Chris tried to fight back the tears as he looked over her motionless body. He noticed a crumpled piece of paper in her free hand. He was urged to read it but knew Police would be here soon and the integrity of the scene was going to be key in proving it was a suicide and not a domestic nightmare. The scene fades out as Nick rushes back up and stops in the doorway, looking on in horror.
------------------------------------------------
The scene fades in to a video that was recorded earlier in the night on Chris's rear deck from his handheld camera. The evening sunset painted a perfect background but Chris was more focused on his camcorder.
"Jace you have really fucked up now!"
"I hope you realize that you have started a war with a man that doesn't fall! No matter what happens inside the ring, at the end of the day, I stand tall!"
"If you thought we had something cooking before you're in for a rude awakening. That was merely just entertaining my time. Now you're on my radar. You raised the red flags when you made the decision to comeback down to that ring on Overdrive. You cost the black hand their moment to stick it to Envi. You cost me a win over the APW Overdrive champion! You made it personal. Before you were just some dumb kid that Hollywood seemed to latch onto. It was pure amusement these past few weeks. Now I'm going to smash your face in until its unrecognizable!"
"You have to respect the message you sent when you whipped me into the steel ring post. Nothing opens your eyes better then being introduced head first into some cold hard steel. Message received! You see up until now I never took you seriously. I'll be the first to admit it. To me, NewGen Rising was a novelty act. A group of good for the young fans to scream for each night. I never thought you had it in you Jace. But something snapped on Thursday didn't it? Something didn't sit right with you, that's why you came to Envi's aide one more time."
"I just hope you understand what you brought on yourself. To me it's torturous to just steamroll my competition. I itch for a legit fight, and until now I didn't think there was one here between us. In my eyes you were a few levels below me. But now I see a mean streak in you. I see a man who is pissed off and finally has something to work for. Up until now you were a group of guys who were standing up to the mob mentalities that some of the factions in APW possessed. Well with Rufio and Watson practically unheard from you and your closest ally have formed a team that the suits deem worthy of a chance. A chance to earn a tag team title shot! Unfortunately boys you have to face me. A man that you have yet to beat on your own. A man that doesn't understand the meaning of stopping. Without Envi out there to assist you what are you really going to do to me? I'm like a god damn zombie in that ring. The only way you are going to end me is by ripping off my head and destroying my brain, anything less and you can kiss your chance goodbye!"
"Well I hope you are ready for some heartache Jace. I hope you're ready for a huge let down. Niobe and I are once again going to prove that the Black Hand is far superior when compared to NewGen Rising. What's next Jace. Is there a contingency plan? What's the backup to the Tag Team championships? I can tell you right now that path is a dead end which stops at Shockwave...It stops with Niobe and I!"
"And don't think for even a second that I forgot about your partner, Brian Hollywood. What is there between us that has been left unsaid? Since day one here in APW someone in an office in a land far, far away, had the grandiose idea of putting us together. Our careers in APW seem to be running parallel to one another. A few twists and turns of the track but a force larger than you and I seem to be pulling us back together. Some guys would be stoked to have someone going through all the same trials and tribulations. The only problem is I don't like you. I don't like anything about you. You have a big mouth and a larger inability to back it up. You drag Jace down, truly hindering any chance he has to blossom into the star the powers to be thinks he can be! I was able to see it day one against the Unforgiven. You consider yourself a friend? A brother to him? Let him go out on his own...he's far better off that way!"
"This idea of the two of you being tag champs is a pathetic mirage. You're unreliable as a partner. I would know! You've cost me a tag match. I've seen you cost others tag matches. It's a nasty trend that for some strange reason he puts up with. What's the breaking point? Maybe costing him his shot at a title he feels he whole heartily desires? Maybe that's when he says enough is enough and lets go of the dead weight!"
"What you need to realize Brian is that no matter what you do, no matter who you pair yourself up with, there is no stopping the Black Hand. You guys won on Thursday, bravo. Where were you to celebrate that win? In the middle of the ring with your hand held high? Nope, in the back getting checked out after I helped Niobe put you through a table! What about Jace? Running with his tail tucked between his legs like the coward that he is. Interfere in my match and then run through the crowd, like they'll prevent me from getting to you. Even in victory you two couldn't enjoy the moment."
"Shockwave will be no different than the rest of our matches. The Black Hand wins and NewGen Rising falls. Only difference this time around is its on a grander stage! At some point Brian you are going to have to get tired of this. Tired of being a loser. Don't you have any dignity? Any pride? Maybe the APW just isn't for you...Maybe the wrestling world just isn't for you..."
"You run around with all these empty 'Executive' promises. It just makes you look silly week after week with nothing to show for your guarantees. Last I checked Envi put me through a table, not you...Envi put Niobe through the table, not you. I know it feels like Thursday was so far away but lets not lose sight of what we learned. The Black Hand lasted longer than NewGen Rising. Envi snuck out the win, not you two. What ground do you have to stand on and lecture me that this time will be different? How? You'll actually put up a fight this time around?"
"This is only personal Brian because you've allowed it to become that way. Your need to be great has been met with the realization that its just not in the cards. You don't have to take offense to the fact that simply put, in that ring, Chris Madison owns Brian Hollywood! The walls around you are crumbling Brian. After we're through all that will be left is the foundation of your career. Start over, brick by brick and try to piece it all back together. Maybe then, in failure, you'll find what you need to exist here."
"Just don't forget that escape is a viable option for you. Run while you still can. Once I get my hands on you at Shockwave there will be nothing left! My brain is set to destroy and it's only a matter of which goes first...your body or your mind."
"NewGen it's time to rise up to the occasion! SEE YOU AT SHOCKWAVE!"
The camera cuts out to static and snow on the screen...
"Those words played in my head over and over like a broken record. See you at Shockwave."
"Every moment of silence, See you at Shockwave. Every time I closed my eyes, See you at Shockwave. When I put my head down on the pillow at night, See you at Shockwave."
