"If you hype something and it succeeds, you're a genius - it wasn't a hype. If you hype it and it fails, then it was just a hype." – Neil Bogart
I’m on the brink of my first Tap Out Title defense but I am also awaiting a shot at the World Title at the same time. That’s a lot on my plate but I think I’ll be able to endure. I’ve surpassed all of the hype surrounding me weeks ago…
{{The scene opens to the inside of a Best Buy store located near downtown Tampa, FL. Anthony Bailey, clad in the simple garb of only a plain white T-shirt, black and blue Nike basketball shorts, and a pair of black and blue Nike sneakers, collectedly strolls through the television series section of DVD’s as multiple consumers clamor through the popular retail store in pursuit of last minute Mother’s Day gifts. A young and bubbly Caucasian brunette female employee approaches Anthony and asks if he needs help finding anything.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Yes, actually I do…do you all have any seasons of the old TV show Matlock on DVD?
Best Buy Employee: Matlock? Let me check for you. I’ll be right back…
{{As she walks off, Anthony turns to face the camera.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Happy Mother’s Day everyone! I’m just here in my hometown picking up a small gift for my mother. I originally purchased her primary gift last week, but I decided to add these DVD’s to the mix. She was a huge fan of the show Matlock starring Andy Griffith that ran from the mid eighties to the early nineties. As a kid, I vaguely remember her talking about the show quite often so I wanted to see what the hype was all about for myself. My mother’s taste in TV shows is…unique nonetheless.
{{Anthony snickers.}}
So this should definitely be interesting if you asked me.
{{The same employee re-emerges onto the screen holding seven DVD’s.}}
Best Buy Employee: Here you go sir, these are the seasons that we have available. Which of these were you interested in?
{{Anthony politely takes the DVD’s from her and begins to look over each of them carefully.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Well, this is a small gift for my mother and because she liked the show so much, I’ll buy all of them.
Anthony’s mother Tracy truly did like to receive thoughtful gifts over expensive ones. Her two doctorate degrees had placed her in a healthy financial state so she was never in need of anything of much monetary value.
Best Buy Employee: Sounds great! I can ring you up right over there.
{{She points to a nearby cash register.}}
Or you can also feel free to go up front and get checked out there. It’s up to you.
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: I might as well do it here since I’m already close.
Best Buy Employee: Sounds goods, follow me right this way.
{{Anthony follows in her footsteps and once he reaches the register, he places the DVD’s down to be scanned.}}
Will that be all for you today, sir?
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Yes ma’am.
{{Anthony reaches into his pocket, grabs his wallet, opens it, and removes his credit card.
Best Buy Employee: Do you always wait until the last minute to shop for her or is this year a one time deal?
{{She smiles at Anthony as he laughs.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: No, not quite. I bought her something else about a week ago but I thought that this would be a great addition.
Best Buy Employee: Aww, that’s sweet.
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Thank you, she’s definitely worth it…
{{Anthony swipes his credit card and enters his PIN number.}}
Anthony was relieved to be having a normal conversation for once, especially being in his hometown and especially since he had a camera following him around the store. The employee was probably not into wrestling and failed to recognize who he was. Had she discovered his identity, he was ready to answer any and all questions that she’d have. He’s big on fan interaction and would never forsake the opportunity to have a genuine conversation with one. But rare occasions like these helped Anthony maintain a healthy balance and feel like a "regular" person, though he was already as regular as they come.
Best Buy Employee: My mother is a huge movie buff so my employee discount has come in handy over these past few years.
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: I bet it has.
Best Buy Employee: But I wanted to switch it up this year so I bought her a gift certificate to some spa across town.
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Oh really? That’s awesome. I bet she’s going to enjoy that.
Best Buy Employee: Yeah, she will…would you like the receipt in the bag?
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Yes that would be fine.
{{Tearing the receipt off from the printer, she places it inside of the bag along with the seven DVD’s of seasons one through seven of Matlock. Anthony puts his credit card and wallet back inside of his pocket and he reaches out to grab the bag from her.}}
Best Buy Employee: Thank you for shopping at Best Buy. Have a wonderful day!
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: You too…
{{He glances down at her nametag.}}
Brittany.
{{Anthony flashes a smile at her and begins to head towards with the exit doors. With the cameraman in tow, Anthony continues to walk until he leaves the building and reaches the sidewalk. It’s a slightly overcast day here in the Sunshine State but still warm in spite of that. Anthony continues to speak.}}
It feels great to be back home for the weekend. It’s been awhile since I had a nice home cooked meal but more importantly, I wanted to spend time with my mother today and just shower her with my adoration. But I make it my job to remind her that she’s special to me more than just one day out of the entire year. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, without that woman, there would be no me. Not just in the aspect of her giving birth to me, but in the aspect of her nurturing. Many parents spoil their children and allow MTV to raise them, and though I basically got everything that I wanted, she definitely instilled the value of life in me and how it wasn’t always necessarily about what you had but who you were and who you had around you.
Before I head back to St. Augustine tomorrow, I’m going to plop down on the couch beside her and watch a few of these DVD’s with her. She’s very nostalgic of the eighties, which is kind of sad since I wasn’t even born yet so I think she subliminally tries to tell me that life was more enjoyable before I entered the picture.
{{Anthony laughs.}}
Nah, I’m just messing. I don’t want her to see this and get offended. But besides this being a special day for mothers all across America, what I truly want to discover is this…will Matt Matlock live up to the hype of Andy Griffith’s character Ben Matlock right here on the cover of these DVD’s? Even if the show bores me to tears, it wouldn’t matter because I’d be gaining an opportunity to spend quality time with the woman who brought me into this world. So being exposed to the show for the first time is a win win but I’m skeptical about you, Matt Matlock. Yes, you earned your shot at my title against Frank Cannon, a man who is by far more annoying than a ton of tiny gnats buzzing in your ear, but will you capitalize on this chance of a lifetime?
The people of Montreal are well deserving of a classic match and since my track record speaks for itself, you know that I’m good and able to go out there and put on one. But are you? I want to be captivated and excited by the idea of you being a worthwhile number one contender, but you are going to have to sell me on it a bit more. You mentioned that wrestling has been your life for nine long years, and though I strive to be generous every single day that I am alive, that statement has paved the permanent trail to your disadvantage. How can one year short of a decade compare to one who has made wrestling his life for literally his entire life? If you fact checked me like some scumbag politician, I’d like to expound on what I mean so that I can clear up any confusion.
Pro wrestling has been my source of income for nearly five months via being here in APW and though I have gone on to win the Tap Out Title at Rasslemania, the biggest pay per view of the year, and bear aliases such as “Asylum’s golden boy,” I’m technically still a wet behind the ear rookie. I have no business accomplishing what I have in the short amount of time that I have done so and that is not my pride speaking either. If I am placing my trust in the outcome of our match at Mayhem on five short months of experience, then the odds are stacked against me. But because I cannot remember a time when I was not a wrestling fan, the calling to take up this sport has been flowing through my veins for some twenty-one years.
This might sound a bit foolish, but I couldn’t find joy or satisfaction in Power Rangers, Batman, or any other activity that consumes one’s childhood. But whatever I was searching for as a young child, I found it in wrestling. These men that I witnessed literally gave their blood, sweat, and tears and I was intrigued. They weren’t some animations concocted in a studio somewhere or when the director yelled “cut,” they failed to exist as the larger than life characters they appeared to be on the big screen. These were real men with real lives who did more than put on a mere show or a simple match, they gave me an experience that began years ago and will die when I am deceased and gone. That’s what I have motivating me Matt Matlock. And it’s cool that you’ve been in this business way longer than I have, but trust me, it’s going to take much more than the familiarity of the squared circle to defeat me.
I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but that also goes for whoever walks out of Mayhem the World Champion. Whether it’s Jason Kash, Knuckles, or Chaz Dillinger, I want you all to know that all of our match outcomes were not products of chance. I look forward to our rematch because I look forward to a similar outcome of last time, but this time around walking away with the World Champion across my waist. That’s usually the climax of most careers, and it will be for mine as well, but the exception of The Promise is that I’m just beginning to get my feet wet in this revered sport of professional wrestling. Good luck to all of you though. I really hope that the title doesn’t wind up in the hands of T.R.I. but hey if it does, it won’t be for too long now will it?
But those concerns will be dealt with post Mayhem because until then, my objective is locked and loaded on Matt Matlock. I always try to give my opponents the benefit of a doubt, whether experienced or not, because you truly never know what someone is capable of until you actually step inside of the ring with them. But I guess the same can be said about me as well right? Once again, I’d like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all of the beautiful and intelligent mothers out there. Your dedication does not go unnoticed; trust me. Until next time…
