*Men's Warehouse in Montreal, Quebec*
The scene opens up inside a Men's Warehouse underneath a sign that says "You're going to like the way you look...I guarantee it." Two men sit on a bench waiting to see the Sensational One, who earlier had arrived with them to have a suit custom tailored for him to wear to the Ball Room Brawl this Sunday. The two men, Madok Mortalis and Pence Weatherlight, are occupying their time by reading. Madok is reading a business magazine and Pence is focusing hard on the sport's section of a newspaper. Pence pokes Madok and Madok jumps, looking over at Pence he gives him a confused glance as Pence points at the front page of the sport's section which displays a picture of Nick Watson with the sub-text: "Mayhem in Montreal".
Madok: Real nice picture of our boy.
Pence: Why is he on the front page and not someone like Gates or Noble? They are headlining after all.
Madok: I don't know...maybe Montreal has a hard-on for Nick Watson.
Pence glares at Madok, who after several long seconds, finally breaks down, and confesses.
Madok: Alright, maybe I paid the newspaper to print his picture on the front page instead of Noble and Gates, but what can it hurt? Nick needs to go in confident and what better way than to give him some more publicity?
Pence: He needs to earn that publicity. Its not like he has accomplished enough in his career so far to warrant...
Pence slaps the newspaper with the back of his hands and then shakes his head as he finishes his statement.
Pence: This. We don't want to get his head too full of steam, that will only cause issues when his number is called this Sunday.
Madok: Confidence isn't a bad thing. I mean look at your career, you were as confident as they come, but it didn't stop you, now did it?
Pence: I also beat Level One in my first month of competition and didn't have management on my back like he does.
Madok: But still...its better than getting absolutely nothing. He deserves some form of credit and also don't act like you didn't respect him for taking out that Sindicate referee. He did the whole company a favor and don't act like you wouldn't do it too.
The sound of a yelp of pain escapes the tailoring room at the back end of the warehouse as Pence and Madok turn to look at the door with a worried glance.
Pence: You think he is alright in there?
Madok: Who knows? Want to go check?
Pence: I will, just wait right here.
Pence stood up and made his way to the tailoring room, where the sound had come from only a few seconds before. He would open the door slowly to find Nick Watson standing in an expensive looking suit:
The expression on Nick's face, however, states that he is not quite enjoying himself with the tailor. The tailor, an old man with shaky hands, puts the needle through the suit, and begins to sew it to be the exactly the right measurement, but the needle hits skin, and punctures it. Nick lets out a howl of pain and then under his breath states:
Nick: God damn...
Pence: Whats wrong? We heard you and you sounded like you were in pain.
Nick: Oh yeah, I'm just dandy...ouch! I feel like a God damn pin cushion, Pence.
Pence chuckled and then sat down in a chair nearby to where Nick was standing as his suit was being made to perfection. Pence looked down at the floor and then began to speak to Nick.
Pence: This is your first PPV with APW and this match is not going to be a walk in the park and I know you realize that, but I just not too confident in....
Nick looked over at Pence with a serious expression that would break every time the old man would puncture him with another mistaken jab of a needle. Nick nodded his head glumly and then responded with a kind reply.
Nick: I'm not asking you to feel confident...hell, I know I am sure wondering if I can do it myself. But worrying about this match is not going to make things any easier. In fact, its going to make it worse. So instead...I'm just going to go out...in this suit...and kick some ass. If I don't win, I don't win, but I want to make sure that there is no doubt in anyone's mind that I'm going out there and giving it my all. That's all that matters to me and it is all that should matter to the people. As long as I go out, push myself, and kick some ass....I'm sure the fans would forgive me for a loss.
Pence nods and looks up at Nick who is grinning wildly.
Nick: I'm used to the pressure of big matches, Pence. I'm used to having to overcome the odds against me and I have learned over time that this is just part of the business we all know and love. Besides, a match like this actually gives me an advantage. I know Dita and Smith would have an advantage if this was a bar-room. After all, Smith was a bouncer, and it seems to me like Dita was a bit of a...well...a bit of a substance abuser back in the day. But this is a Ball Room Brawl...Ball Rooms are huge, the space is an advantage to us quicker fighters, and don't worry, I've taken into account the fact that Sykes is going to target me first as well. I still don't know why he thinks I'm so hyped up...nothing I've done so far has been memorable or even in the least bit "hyped up".
I've fought no big name athletes and have obtained no quality wins, unless if he is counting last week, and the fact that I "Final Jest"ed a sindicate referee. Which if that is the case...let him have his illusion that he is the under-dog. I don't need to try to sound like I'm in the now, either. He is really trying too hard to make himself seem so good that there is no chance for anyone else to win and trying so hard to reach out to an audience he believes he is in touch with. But, the real illusion he is under is not the one where he is the under-dog, but that the fans actually are buying into him. Sure, he may have his audience on Asylum, but I can attest to the fact that his ability to relate to the fans is neither real nor funny. But that may just be me looking too deep into the persona of the "Original Pranksta". I can't believe he is twenty five years old, two years older than me, and is not even close to as mature as me. Even his plan was nuttier than a bag full of boiled peanuts and that is saying something.
Nick pauses and winces as another needle hits his skin before continuing on.
Nick: Then of course there is the guys I know very little about: Pepsi and Yarmouth. Both of which have had their shares of success and failings. Yarmouth for instance picked up Jason Royce as his manager to improve his wrestling skills and I have to ask, Pence? How does picking up one of the most annoying people in APW history going to make him better? Sure, he is a Hall of Famer, but at the same time during the later parts of his career he fell off something big, and now he is training Yarmouth and managing him. I kind of feel sad for the guy, though...did you know that Yarmouth was an orphan? The guy was kicked around a lot to different families all over the place until finally his step-father, his ex-manager, taught him how to harnass the power of his rage, and turn it into power? Because of his step-father, Yarmouth found purpose, and his way of showing him thanks was to kick him out of the APW. Not only do I feel bad for his step-father, but at the same time I have to question Yarmouth's intelligence.
Nick takes a deep breath and then continues. He notices that the old man has stopped sewing and then grins even wider.
Nick: Speaking of intelligence...we then have Billy Pepsi. Now, I know a bit about him, but not enough to write him off or to even think he doesn't have what it takes to win this match. In fact, I could say...I'm kind of happy he is here in this match. The guy absolutely deserves to be in a big match, the guy has been mistreated his whole life by his family just because of his size and limited intelligence, but what his family doesn't know is that Billy Pepsi has heart and determination. Last Thursday he tried to find a way to remove me and Smith from this match this week and even though it failed it proved to me that Billy at least has the determination to win this match. So screw the military background that his family has, the guy doesn't need to live up to crap for them, and in my eyes he has already proven a great deal to me. He has proven that even though he lacks size and intelligence that a man can make up for those things when he puts his mind to it. I, for one, am proud to call Billy Pepsi my adversary at Mayhem, and I hope that he can say the same thing about me.
Nick gasps in pain as the old man goes back to work and quickly makes up for the moment without pain by plunging the needle into his side. The old man looks at him as if to say: "Sorry...", but Nick shrugs it off, and keeps going.
Nick: Then of course we have the "big" two as I would call them in A.C. Smith and Dita Morgan, they are wild cards, and that is because both of them have talents which are going to give them a huge edge in this match. For instance, A.C. Smith's experience. Out of all of the athletes in this match Smith has the most experience and by far the most hype out of anyone in this match, but that is not the only reason he will be formidable, oh no. Mr. Smith possesses physical strength that very few men in this match actually have and if someone plans on getting close to him they need to know exactly how to approach this man. His history and huge list of accomplishments alone should be a daunting thing, but I just can't seem to buy into it. Sure, I have respect for Smith and the work he has put in, but at the same time he is no spring chicken. He isn't fast and the only thing he really has going for him is a power game at this point. The main point is...to beat Smith you have to use your mind and your agility to avoid getting into tests of strength with him.
His experience as a bouncer, as a cop, and as a multiple time champion give him huge advantages in terms of in-ring know-how, but when it comes to tactical battle plans in multi-fighter bouts. I don't know if he has what it takes. I will go back to the point I made earlier...in a bar, he would have the edge. The lack of room, the familiar setting, and the simplicity of the match would favor him greatly. But, in a Ball Room Brawl, in a suit, fighting with weapons that can only be found in a Ball Room, and with the amount of space a ball room has... the edge just isn't there anymore. There is no "bull in a china shop" advantage there for him to take advantage of. Agility and grace are what is going to set the tone of this match...being able to weave in and weave out of combat to catch a breather to recuperate is going to be key in a match up, like this. And sadly, Smith is a big guy, and hasn't been young for a long time...the fact is the two combine for a very easy mismatch with the likes of me and Dita.
The tailor has stopped working again and begins to look for a new type of string to use to sew up his suit jacket from where an adjustment was made. Nick breathes a sigh of relief as he looks down at his suit and realizes it is near completion before continuing on.
Nick: Out of all the competitors in this match, Dita Morgan will be the most difficult to knock out. It is because of many factors...as I said Dita and Smith are wild cards and Dita herself is as wild as they come. She has a very dark past and she has done a lot of things that she more than likely regrets and I respect she is trying to redeem herself and reconnect with her friends: Shadow and Slade. She traveled the world, bettering herself in combat, and learning from the best...she is also agile. Dita also is not afraid to get dirty in her fights and also is quite the scrapper, but then again most fighters from London have that sort of calling card. I expect that she will be my main adversary because our styles of combat...are extremely similar. She can turn a lot of heads in most matches and I am quite surprised she hasn't earned a great deal of respect on Meltdown...though she did win me over, I will tell you that.
I would say she is the next Sally, but we will see how things go with that one. First she has to make her name known and I know she knows that more than anyone else in this match...well save maybe me. Out of all of my opponents in this match, she is going to be the hardest to beat, and that is because of her willingness to fight dirty. In a match like this, people who fight dirty have a distinctive edge against fighters, like myself, who don't fight dirty all the time. Also, if she happens to wear a dress, it will be a whole lot easier for her to fight in that then for me to fight in a suit. There are several advantages, one is most of these athletes are going to underestimate her based on gender, and secondly they are going to view her as the least prominent threat...which is stupid.
Nick waits for the familiar prick of the needle, but then notices that the old man has finished his suit. Nick tests out the flexibility of the suit by punching and kicking the air. He is surprised by the lack of constrictions around the shoulder area and the legs. Nick nods his head and then continues.
Nick: I've done my homework and I've made the necessary adjustments to be ready for a fight like this. I know its going to be tough and I know that there is no way that it is going to be easy. And I will say I would like it no other way. You see, winning easily proves nothing, and gets you nothing. Winning easily will not further the cause of the people or justice for that matter, but triumphing in one of the most difficult matches on the card, and coming out with as much passion and heart as one can will not only further the causes, but strengthen them as well. Last Thursday I took out a Sinidicate referee and claimed my spot for this match and this Sunday I intend to take another step toward cleaning up Overdrive for the better, but if I have come this far and fail now, what would be the point?
The fact is that everyone in this match doesn't have a goal, no one else in this match is fighting for unselfish reasons other than myself, and I think that gives me an edge. Sure, some people beat me in strength, and in heart...that's without question, but when it comes down to it my willingness to sacrifice all I am for the people and for the righteous cause of justice...there is no one in this match that even comes close. I am not underestimating anyone...I look at everyone in this match as my equal and expect them to come out with as much poise and want to succeed as I will. And that...is the makings for a great match. A match that I will not hold back in. A match that I will not give up in. And more importantly a match that, without question, I must succeed in...for the people! For justice!
Nick pauses and looks over at Pence who is nodding in agreement.
Pence: Well said...but that was all just words. Sure, we have been training you, and getting you ready for the big match, but its up to you to put the training into action. That is why we are going to try something different today...
Nick: Something...different?
Pence grinned and then nodded his head.
Pence: Trust me when I say that, by Sunday, you will be able to back up those words you just used.
Nick: Are you serious?
Pence: Without a doubt, but come on! We need to get out of here and start the most difficult phase of your training yet.
Nick: More difficult than the cage fight?
Pence nods his head as Nick looks at him with worry on his face as the scene fades to black.
