“Well, here we are. Three weeks before Test for the Best. My final chance to enter this tournament and find out who truly is the Best in the APW.” Steve Stryker was driving his rental car from Duluth, Georgia to Jackson, Mississippi. It’s become a ritual for Stryker to drive to each location until he finally gets called up to Overdrive. It’s motivation for him to continue fighting to be the best. This week he will be facing off against all the top competitors on Meltdown to see who will be entering the Test for the Best tournament.
Test for the Best was not the only tournament that “The Hitman” was going to be entering this summer. He has also entered into the Extreme Tournament. This tournament matches all of the best wrestlers in the world together to see who will become the True Expert Champion. Stryker was going to have to compete in both events at the same time which has offered a slight predicament for him and his ritual of driving to each location. The first week of matches will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. That is going to prove difficult for Stryker and the fact that he’s currently only on his way to Mississippi.
Stryker would need to focus all his efforts on each tournament at separate times. This week he would have to focus on Test for the Best. The second chance to Main Event a Meltdown would not be squandered, as it was against Evan Envi. This week he is going to be facing a proverbial who’s who of APW’s Meltdown. The funny thing about the majority of these people though is that Stryker has beat most of them before; Stefan Raab, most recently Yarmouth, and of course, the wonderful Carmen Rivera. Stryker has yet to see Kyle Goodburn or Jair Hopkins in competition but they are certainly no better than the rest of this rag tag group of misfits.
Stryker has been spending the majority of his time recalling his past matches with this group. Yarmouth was freshest in his mind as he found his winning ways once again last week. Stryker didn’t handle the loss to Evan Envi well and Yarmouth paid the price for that. Yarmouth was big, he was intimidating, but in the end he was no match for Steve Stryker.
There were a lot of other things on his mind currently too. Stryker has noticed a few things around APW recently. Although Stryker was getting opportunities and he was of course in this match to enter the Test for the Best, he has felt very disrespected lately. Carmen Rivera, while hated, is highly touted by the APW brass. Stryker on the other hand, the only person to beat her one on one is getting no recognition. The only attention being paid to him is that he continues to win. Except his lapse with Evan Envi, Stryker didn’t lose to anybody else on Meltdown. He faced Overdrive and Asylum stars that didn’t stand a chance, he faced the former number one contender to the North American Title and won, and he faced the current number one contender to the North American Title and won. Yet, he was being ignored, forgotten, and passed over.
This week is Stryker’s chance to show the APW brass that he was actually the best Meltdown had to offer. Not Evan Envi, not Carmen Rivera, and certainly as hell not Stefan Raab. This would be his chance to show Johnny Diamond and more importantly President Jeff that he was completely capable of being on Overdrive and competing for the APW Undisputed Championship. One step at a time Stryker would prove this to APW, the world, and himself.
Stryker used to quite enjoy these drives from venue to venue. Gave him the chance to reflect and relax. This has become increasingly more difficult after each match. His anger was getting very difficult to control week in and week out. Last week he spent a considerable amount of time ranting about the decline of American society and the general lacking of knowledge, intelligence, and common sense of Generation-Y. It didn’t make much sense as he was considered part of this generation, but for some reason, Stryker was just angry at everyone. It didn’t matter what they did, how they looked, how they acted, and just there aura. Not that Stryker put any stock in aura’s, he just didn’t like being around people. For now though, Stryker only knew how to get rid of stress by the drive and his talks to the APW world.
He set up his camera on his dashboard and got ready to begin his weekly message.
[o] RECORD [o]
“Oh APW, how disgusted I am with you. You continue to throw people at me and expect a different result! Come on now APW, did you really think that Yarmouth stood a chance against me? Give me a break! Yarmouth couldn’t compete with Evan Envi, whereas I gave him the match of his life. Did I lose? Yes. But I pushed him a lot further than he was ready for. Who on earth would’ve thought that Yarmouth would’ve been able to stand up against ‘The Hitman’?”
“Apparently it’s you fools in the APW, each of you ignorant assholes that continue to discount my ability, my skill, and what I deserve. How the hell did Carmen Rivera get a chance to become the Number One Contender to the North American Title after she lost to me? And what do I get? I get to face piece of crap, nobody, females like Niobe Martin? Who is running the show around here?”
“Then I partner up with the whore of California and of course, we win, but she’s the sudden favorite in this battle royal? Is everyone blind, deaf, and dumb? Do you think I don’t hear what people are saying about this match? ‘Oh Kyle Goodburn has had a good few weeks, Jair Hopkins is underrated, Carmen Rivera is the cream of the crop.’ Listen to yourselves you morons! I beat Carmen Rivera. 1, 2, 3. The bell rang, the match was over. Who stood on top? Huh!? Who stood on top APW?”
“That’s right. I did. Because I am the best APW has to offer, not Carmen Rivera, not Kyle Goodburn, and not even Evan Envi. Envi will be down at ringside Monday night and that’s all well and good for him but he’s just going to be there sitting in a stew of jealousy. Envi wants nothing more than to be entering the Test for the Best, but instead he’ll be sitting there doing what he does best, talking. That’s all he ever really does. Talk, talk, talk. Then what Envi? Then you get to face Carmen Rivera at Test for the Best and not enter the tournament to get where you belong. You’re stuck where you belong Evan. Get used to it.”
“Let us not ignore the rest of my opponents though. There is the behemoth, the monstrosity, the gritty veteran, and the loser Yarmouth. What can I say about this big dumb oaf that he hasn’t stumbled through himself? I proved to APW that he’s no match for me last week. I don’t even know if the match was ever really that close. I know I didn’t think for a second that I was going lose. Again, I was right, again, I walked away victorious. So why would this week be any different? It doesn’t matter who else is in the ring, if I’m matched up with Yarmouth at any point, he knows as well as I do that he doesn’t stand a chance. He knows as well as I do that I beat him fair and square and that if it’s down to me and him, there is only one possible ending.”
“There’s another in this battle royal that knows the exact same to be true. The moron from Germany, Stefan Raab. A man that has toiled in irrelevance ever since he’s entered the APW. He lost when he first got a shot to enter this battle royal. Yet for some reason, despite the fact that he was quite literally destroyed in that match, he got another chance. Somehow he was lucky enough to win that match and get himself entered in. His luck and his opportunities are going to run out this week. When I faced off against Raab in the ring, Niobe Martin was with us as well, but she didn’t do a damn thing, Raab on the other hand spoke a lot of shit. He didn’t keep his mouth shut all week like he should’ve.”
“Raab made the mistake of insulting America. He insulted the country, its people, and the most tragic and defining event of our lives, 9/11. While I have also grown to hate a lot of the people in this country, that doesn’t mean that it’s ok for you to make fun of the greatest tragedy of the last generation. You ignorant German asshole, you think that you were going to get away with that? Look at me, now look at yourself. What did you think was going to happen you fat shit. If you insult me or my country then you’re looking for a world of hurt.”
“Here’s the only thing that kept me from killing you that week. I know why you said it, you said it because you’re literally too stupid to know better. You try and make waves, you try to be provocative, you try and pretend like you’re an object of people’s hatred. Nobody cares about you Raab. The only reason I’ve had to talk about you this much is that Johnny Diamond is a fool who keeps putting us in the same matches. We both know that you’re not in my wheelhouse. You don’t deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with me. If anything you’re a footnote to my career so far. ‘Stefan Raab, who also lost to Steve Stryker, finally quit when he realized he would never be good enough.’ That’s the only way it’s going to read for you.”
“You remind me of a Howard Stern or a Rush Limbaugh. Just a shock jock who doesn’t know enough about anything to make an actual opinion or statement, so you just say the most offensive things you can think of and end up coming off as the ignorant asshole that you are. You haven’t fooled me and soon you won’t be fooling the rest of the APW either. You may be in this Main Event and you may be facing me again Stefan, but do not get confused. You don’t belong here, you don’t belong in the same ring with me, and I’m going to make that painfully clear this week. On my route to beating everybody in this match, I’m sure you and I will meet. When that happens, I’ll show the whole world how worthless you really are. Get ready Raab, you’re about to be exposed.”
“And speaking of exposure, let’s talk about the most talked about person in this match who doesn’t have a vagina, Kyle Goodburn. Oh Kyle, how they speak of you. ‘The next big thing.’ ‘The man who will rival Evan Envi.’ Boy have I had enough of people spewing this shit. What have you done Kyle? You’ve been partnered up with the Meltdown elite of Carmen Rivera, Evan Envi, and Yarmouth. That’s where you got most of your wins right? On the back of others? Who else have you beat? Stefan Raab, see previous five minutes of this video. Alonso Famoso? An Asylum joke? Yup, I got one of those on my record too in Warren Peace. We’re so proud of Kyle Goodburn. You know what Kyle? I’m sick of it, I’m sick of hearing it. I don’t care about you Goodburn. You don’t mean shit to me and you’re going to find out what it really takes to compete in Meltdown this week.”
“You haven’t done anything to impress me Kyle. Johnny Diamond might keep on giving you chance after chance and this might technically be your second Main Event, but let’s not kid ourselves Kyle. You’re a nothing to me. You’re just another talentless dope that Diamond is pushing above me because clearly he has some issues. Everybody knows this match comes down to only two people. Everybody knows where the marquee match-up really is. Yet I keep on hearing your damn name Kyle. Well, this week, I’m going to shut up the crowd, I’m going to shut up the backstage area, I’m going to shut up APW when I show them just how worthless you are compared to me.”
“Before I touch on the slut, there is one more person I need to address. The young Jair Hopkins. A man, who I admit, I know nothing about. He entered this match by getting another chance with Stefan Raab. What a sad state of affairs that must be for you Hopkins. All I really know is that you consider yourself a high-flying technical wrestler. This couldn’t be further from what I consider myself. I’ve made a career beating people like you who think they can run, jump, and dance around the ring and that they’re going to beat someone who is bigger and stronger. I’ve fought a lot in my life Jair, I’ve fought enough that I know how to deal with people like you. Especially in a Battle Royal where your fighting style will be rendered useless. You can’t be jumping around on the turnbuckles or ropes when at any time there is a chance you could be taken out. You may be trying to hit somebody else with a cross body or a drop kick or anything. Then all of a sudden, ‘The Hitman’ shows up and ends all your hopes and dreams. It’s an inevitability Jair. I don’t know you and yet I already don’t like you. You probably don’t know who I am either and that’s fine with me, because in the ring we can do a lot of catching up. Anything we need to learn about each other we will on Monday night. You’ll see what I’m capable of and I’ll see what you’re capable of. In the end I think we both know how it will go. You’ll go back to obscurity, and I’ll continue on to the Test for the Best.”
“The Best. That world has been thrown around a lot lately. Who is the best on Meltdown? Sure, we’ve had legends come through lately, Mark Mania, Michael Lively, and now Shane Borderland. But who is the best homegrown Meltdown star? Evan Envi? Yarmouth? Steve Stryker? Nope, the name I’ve been hearing a lot is Carmen fuckin’ Rivera. Why is it that I keep hearing your name? Have you beat Evan Envi in a match? Have you beat me in a match? Nope and nope. Is it because you’re a woman? It’s gotta be right? Would people even give you the time of day if you were just another guy who was wrestling? Not a chance. It’s the Sally Talfourd effect. Sally is a great APW competitor, but she is regarded as one of the greatest of all time in the APW. Why? Because she’s a woman. You’re a standard opponent. Nothing special, nothing amazing. You couldn’t beat me, that’s for sure. So what is it that has everyone talking about you? Your vagina. Simple as that. You’re not the best, I’ve shown you that before, I’m going to show it again Monday.”
“You and I have been going back and forth for weeks now. I faced you my second week ever here. I won, let’s not forget that, but for some reason we’ve been attached to each other since then. You might’ve fooled everybody else with that T&A of yours but as the person who has seen you defeated, you can’t fool me. You’re nothing special. You’re the flavor of the month. You’ll be gone as quickly as you arrived. But the unsung hero, the one no one saw coming, he sticks around. He keeps fighting. He fights through the ignorance and becomes champion.”
“I’ve beaten the majority of the people in this match already and after Monday night; I will have beaten all of them, the majority of them twice now. I don’t need to tell you all that there is a bounty on all of your heads. You already know that ‘The Hitman’ is coming. You already know what I’m capable. Now the only question is. Who’s really the Best?”
