“Ladies and gentlemen, Steve Stryker here, live, from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in Dallas, Texas! I know this must be different for all of you seeing me in an airport, but with the Extreme Tournament being in Las Vegas and last week being in Mississippi, I really wasn’t going to try and drive that whole way back and forth.”
Stryker was rushing through the airport. DFW is a huge airport and Stryker was weaving in and out through the crowd while holding a camera in his hand, pointing it as himself.
“Unfortunately, I’m returning back to APW with a loss in the Extreme Tournament and that’s quite upsetting for me. I was facing the owner of another wrestling federation and he managed to squeak away with a victory. Luckily, next week I’ll be facing APW’s own Johnny Rebel and I’ll be able to show the whole world how ready I am for Overdrive.”
Stryker bumps into a few people as he walks by them. Some turn to give him a look, but when they do they see the size of him and turn around quickly.
“But I must not fall victim to being over-worked, as Meltdown is currently my home and I have a duty to it and to the APW to give it my full attention. This week, I’m booked in a match against two very familiar competitors. One of whom I’ve beaten two different times now, and one who I still have some unfinished business with. This match is basically Meltdown just laying it on the table and saying, here’s the best we got, everybody watch.”
“You have the three top Meltdown stars in the same ring, along with an APW Hall of Famer in Michael Lively. Could you really ask for anything more? Last week there was the best of the best competing in a battle royal to see who would move on to Test for the Best. This group of wrestlers were supposed to be the absolute greatest Meltdown had to offer, it was supposed to be a showcase to the rest of the company just what APW was about. People were talking about how great Kyle Goodburn was, they were talking about how Carmen Rivera was going to be the story of the Test for the Best. Evan Envi was running his mouth about all the talent. The predictions were coming in from fans and other wrestling alike. The one mistake every single person made was counting out Steve Stryker. Despite my winning streak, despite my already beating over half the people in that battle royal, despite me being the best damn wrestling in Meltdown, people counted me out.”
“What now APW? What now fans? What do you have to say for yourselves!? Have I proven myself worthy to you people!? I won the battle royal. I beat your precious Carmen Rivera. I beat your big up and coming star Kyle Goodburn. What now!?”
Stryker keeps making his way through the airport. He walks past the baggage claim and starts making his way towards the rental cars.
“Now that I’ve beaten the best and brightest Meltdown has to offer that aren’t already the North American Champion, what can you say? It’s very clear that Evan Envi and myself are the two biggest names on Meltdown today. Sure, we have our old guys who are trying to recapture some old glory in Lively and Borderland. But in terms of young, raw, individual talent it’s Evan Envi and Steve Stryker. I don’t want to hear any shit about Carmen Rivera being the best. I don’t want to hear that Kyle Goodburn is the next big thing. The only thing I want to hear is the question of which one? Which of us is it Evan? We both have our claims now. You’re the North American Champion. I’m entered into the Test for the Best. You wish you were in this tournament, I wish I had a championship belt. You hold one victory over me, after this week, I’ll have one over you. So which of us is it? Who’s the next Overdrive superstar?”
PAUSE
Stryker makes his way to the rental counter and puts the camera in his bag. “Names Steve Stryker, have a reservation for a car. Taking it to Bossier City, New Orleans, and then bringing it back here tomorrow.”
“That’s a long way in two days.” The salesperson at the desk was a stuck up white man who was just a bit too skinny and his hair had just a bit too much gel.
“I know how far it is.” Stryker pulled out his license and credit card and put it on the counter. “It’s a busy life sometimes.”
The salesperson offered a half-hearted smirk and a very feminine groan. “Looks like you have a four door sedan booked. Any preference?”
“Well, you said it was a long way, how about something fast?”
“We don’t have anything fast, I have a Chevy Cobalt.” The salesperson was giddy at his admission that they only had a shit-car available.
“A Cobalt? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea who I am?” Well, that wasn’t really going to go over well. That line never worked.
“I’ll have you know that I have no idea who you are and I’d like to keep it that way. I have an SUV available. It’s a Jeep Grand Cherokee, it’s an extra $50 a day however.”
Stryker thinks it over and looks deflated. He already paid for his flight to Vegas, and now tomorrow he has to fly to Chicago for the next round of the Extreme Tournament. “No, the Cobalt will be fine.”
“Very good.” The salesperson smirked again.
Stryker got the keys and started walking towards where his car was parked waiting for him. The Cobalt is a ugly as hell car. Small and just looks like a girl should be driving it and putting flowers and crap all over it. “Oh great. I’ll look real tough pulling into the arena in this damn thing.”
He gets into the car and puts his stuff in the passenger seat. He gets out his GPS and sets it up. He pulls out the camera and puts it on the dashboard.
RECORD
“So that’s the question Evan. I have a feeling that within the next few weeks we’re going to find the answer. This week will be our second time together in the same ring but the parameters have changed quite a bit this time. This time you have a girl in your corner that I’ve embarrassed twice already and I have an APW Hall of Famer who almost killed Gabriel Anselm last week. Looks like your nerves from our last meeting are going to carry over again.”
“I’m really looking forward to getting back in the ring with you Evan. You’re the only one in the APW who has given me a loss so far and that’s not something that sits well with me. While I’ll never get the loss off of my record, I could at least balance it with a victory against you this week. I need to nip this losing to you in the bud so that it doesn’t start to define me.”
“Take Carmen Rivera for example. She is the apple of so many APW’ers eyes. She is the number one contender for the North American Title and will be facing her tag partner at Test for the Best. She is heralded as the best female wrestler in APW since Sally Talfourd. Yet, what really defines her? What is it that people always have to say when she’s brought up now? ‘Well, she’s never beat Stryker.’ It’s inevitable for her now. She can accomplish great things, go on to be a bona fide star. But, she never beat Steve Stryker.”
“I can’t have that happen with me and you Evan. I can’t be defined by my losses to you, because all it says is that you’re the best on Meltdown. I don’t believe that to be the truth and this week, win loss record won’t matter anymore. After this week, the only thing that will matter is who makes it first. I have a built in chance to do it at Test for the Best. All I need to do is win. Sure, I’m going to be facing some serious talent in that tournament, but I have a chance in a mere two weeks to become the number one contender for the APW Undisputed Title. Simple as that Evan. That just eats away at you doesn’t it? That must just kill to think about. I have what you want and I’m not going to squander it either. In a few short months there is a real possibility of seeing me in the Main Event of Shockwave. Chew on that for a little bit.”
“While Evan thinks about that for a little bit, let me talk to the beautiful, the gorgeous, the amazing, the loser Carmen Rivera. What a ride you and I have had Carmen! For months now we’ve gone back and forth. Well, not really. I mean, you haven’t beaten me yet have you? For all your loud mouth antics and for all your derogatory names that you call me, what has happened? Two losses. I guess technically you got a win because of me too, but that was just you riding my coat-tails to a victory in that tag match. It’s a wash though, because all you won was being entered into the Battle Royal, which I promptly eliminated you from. We all knew it was going to come down to the two of us in the end. All of APW saw that coming. But all the little fan boys and girls all predicted the ending a bit differently. Everyone thought that little Carmen Rivera would get the better of big bad Steve Stryker. Care to clue in the fanboys, Carmen? How’d that end? I mean, save for that big oaf Yarmouth ruining my victory, how did it end? Carmen Rivera playing second fiddle yet again to The Hitman Steve Stryker.”
“I expect this week to be no different. I expect that you’ll try and ride Envi’s momentum coming into this match and try and finally get the W over me. While it’s very easy to get caught up with all of the Meltdown star power in this match, I think there is a wild-card that everyone is forgetting. I think that while Evan Envi and Carmen River are two of the top three stars on Meltdown, everyone is forgetting that teaming with Steve Stryker is one of the top stars in the history of the APW. Did that click with everyone? A former World Heavyweight Champion, a former Overdrive Champion, a former Tag-Team Champion, and a former Xtreme Champion, ladies and gentlemen, Michael Lively. What a sad state of affairs it is in the world if Michael Lively is the unknown in this match. Do people not realize that we have a living legend in our match this week?”
“Michael Lively is one of the most celebrated champions in APW history and he deserves all of the praise I give him. He may not be the nicest guy and he may not be pumping all of our tires going into this match, but he doesn’t need to. He is Michael F’n Lively. If Evan Envi and Carmen Rivera are worried about facing me then they should be literally shaking in their wrestling boots knowing that Michael Lively is going to be in this match. You pair the best in Meltdown with one of the best in APW and there are people in the world who expect this match to go another way? Come on now people.”
“Michael let me talk to you one on one a little bit here. I know that you have no idea who I am. I know that you feel like you’re just being paraded around Meltdown so that they can put more butts in the seats. But let me tell you this. I got your back. You can even ask one of our competitors this week in Carmen Rivera. When it comes to the difference between winning and losing, I got your back. We may not get along forever, but for this week we will. For this week you’ll be in my corner and I’ll be in yours. This week, victory is our only option. I’ve explained already that I need this victory over Evan Envi and you Michael, you just need some more work. You’re just getting all the rust off and I appreciate that. If you need me to carry you a bit in this match, I’m in. If you need to get some extra work in, I’ll back off. You’re Michael Lively and I have a ton of faith in your ability to bring home this victory for us. But let me make it perfectly clear. If I see you starting to slack, if I see you showing signs of rust, I’ll pull you. I’ll tag you and jump right in and take over. As much of an honor as it is to be in the ring with you this week, the victory matters more.”
“I know that last week you waltzed into Meltdown and beat the hell out of Gabriel Anselm. But he was a nothing, he was a nobody. While everyone in Meltdown might seem like a nobody to you right now, let me assure you that our opponents are nothing to balk at. This week will not be as easy for you as last week was. So if I have to, and I’m sure I won’t, but if I do, I’m going to pull the plug and take over this match. I know Evan Envi and I know Carmen Rivera and I know what it takes to get the win.”
“This week, APW will see the young and old compete together against two rising stars. It’s a match that deserves a lot more fanfare than its getting. It’s a chance for Envi and Rivera to say that they can match up with APW Legends, it’s a chance for Carmen to get that elusive victory over me. In the end though, it’s just a chance for me to pad my stats. Add another tally to the win column before heading into Test for the Best. Add another name to the list of people on Meltdown I’ve beat. That’s all it is folks. A chance for Steve Stryker to take a victory lap around the Meltdown arena.”
“Test for the Best is a short two weeks away and the second week of the Extreme Tournament is on Sunday, so I have a real busy couple of weeks. But before any of that, I get to drill home to the point to the Meltdown crowd that Steve Stryker is next big thing. I get another chance to let the whole world know that when there is a bounty on your head, the Hitman is going to collect.”

TWO HOURS LATER
Stryker pulls up to the arena, the new normal of four or five people are there waiting for him. Most of them are booing as he drives in. He didn’t understand this. Why show up if they’re just going to boo? How pathetic is it to waste their valuable time hating somebody? Stryker rolls down his window. “Move along people, nothing to see here.”
One of the people raised a sign that read ‘I bet you Envi this’ and there was a picture of the North American Title. “Real creative, I’m sure your mother is proud of your ability to print things out. Maybe one day you will do something with yourself and your little talent. Maybe work at a Kinko’s.” The person then flipped off Stryker. “That’s the same finger I used on your mother, she said that she takes more than that her other hole though.”
Stryker did a quick U-Turn in the parking lot and then pulled away. Waving to the few people there. “Lunatics.”
