“To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.”
¯ Sun Tzu, The Art of War
The United Center lobby is lively just 48 hours away from APW’s Test for the Best centered in the middle of the lobby opposite a finely clothed Calvin Ingram is ESPN personality Jonathan Coachman. “The Coach” plays up to the fans the grave importance of this interview with his silence. Perhaps nothing conveys a deeper message than the presence of silence. Ingram was surprised people showed up to his little interview with “The Coach” considering they sort of hated him. If not all then a good 50% of the people had immense hatred for a man who had so much promise. He knew and most of those fans knew that he had the technical ability and the charisma to be a top draw in any organization. But, in his mind deep down Ingram didn’t hate APW all he wanted to do was perfect it to its former glory. In this world we live in today professional wrestling has been a staple of bad jokes and generic puns. It’s like the broken record of political equality that Michael Callahan spews out each and every single time. Chi town will be blessed with a new Pro-Life Champion as it is Calvin Ingram’s birth right. Night by Night, Day by Day and the chronicles of a warrior never truly stops. He has won bar brawls and marital arts competitions but this is going to send a message to everyone who doubted him. He may not look like the one to topple Callahan but don’t ever underestimate the fight of the warrior. He has been disciplined mentally and physically but the final test will come soon after this interview. But at first he must imply the rule of knowing your enemy is becoming your enemy. “The Coach” settles the crowd before eventually speaking towards Calvin Ingram.
The Coach: Calvin you are set to face off in a little under 48 hours against perhaps the biggest challenge of your career. I mean yes you’ve had that little feud with Isamu Suzuki and John Dionysus but this is something quite different. You have a chance to not only beat Callahan and win the Pro-Life championship. But, you also have the chance to belittle him to a point of disillusionment. I mean the guy has a big ego but also look at his political background and him being an ex-marine. Do you think he’s worthy of that title and is he somebody who seems overpowering.
Calvin has known of many things throughout his life bout longevity and being able to maintain your freshness. To him he considers Callahan as stale as a day one Toaster Strudel. He’s nothing more than a vile deity trying to claim some form of glory. But what has he done lately. He got swept under the rug by Chaz Dillinger and is going one on one with his worst nightmare. What makes him so special exactly?
Calvin Ingram:I see a lot of fans in attendance and I would like to thank you all for coming out in support of me facing off this cocky tool. He’s simply claiming Barack Obama is not going to be reelected considering Mitt Romney is the biggest dick not to be pleasured by Carmen Rivera. It’s hard to sit here and fathom Callahan being right about anything. Considering he was demoted and scrapped by the Republican Party as he failed at politics and he’ll fail at being champion. You have no balls Callahan the political tirade isn’t gimmick of the year or makes you relevant. You are hitting left fielded fouls while I’m batting more homers than Babe Ruth & Hank Aaron. Callahan give up let be you be your martyr there’s a good 75% here that wants me to mutilate you and the other 25% well they’re not to be converted yet. But sooner or later you’ll see things my way they all do Callahan at the crossroads that is.
The 75 percenters or the people who actually believe Ingram is going to go over Callahan are in such an uproar that “The Coach” decides to let them have that moment. It wasn’t like most times the guy who was just a few months ago in a career crossroads with face paint and misdirection. He now had some momentum and promise that wasn’t going to let up until he finally obtained the spotlight. It was definitely his time and Jonathan Coachman knew that now for the first time.
The Coach: Knowing that 75% of these people are rooting for you has to be a feel good moment for you at this point in your short career. I mean you’ve been wrestling professionally for going on three years and you’re now going one on one with Asylum’s so called bread winner. I mean despite his controversial behavior Callahan is what people call World Heavyweight Championship material. Do you see yourself possibly going on to the Main Event scene after this? I mean your career did have a crossroads so it was funny you mentioned something about that in your spiel to Callahan.
Calvin Ingram thinks about his plans down the road as he sort of did lose track of rallying for the Main Event. Yet, that was Donovan Caine’s purpose not his. While the World Heavyweight Championship needs to mean something again and Professional Wrestling needs saving it’s a matter of timing. Was it time for Calvin to go all out for that belt? All he knew was that he wanted the Pro-Life era to be no longer living at the closure of The Test for the Best pay per view.
Calvin Ingram:Yes, Michael Callahan has proved he can one day be a great Main Eventer on Asylum. I’m not going to say he’s not a great technical wrestler. On a physical standpoint though I’m ready to take it to the next level no matter what championship I’m going after. Anthony Bailey has Jason Kash’s number in 48 hours I also believe that. And I rather face him down the road than Kash for a number of reasons. Asylum is in for a change of the guard not all of your staple talents are going to win in two days time. The younger talents are hungrier than the top guys are. I’m hungrier in my pursuit for Callahan and when I take a bite out of him he’ll have to pray to whomever he believes in for survival. I am the ace in deck, the king of technical finesse, I am Satan… Who is Callahan? A political mess who needs a reality check pronto.
The fans are eating every bit of what Calvin Ingram is putting over as they believe in him. He isn’t trying to piss over everyone or President Jeff in this particular interview. This time he’s’ more focused than ever and that seemed to be what was lacking in recent weeks. But he has a particular target and he is ready to go down in the history books as that force or hidden anomaly that toppled Michael Callahan.
The Coach: People have doubted you all your life, that’s sure to feed your determination. I’ve followed tapes of your career in APW so far and your wrestling ability was underutilized. People think you were a little too hard on President Jeff. As far as I know APW management gave you the Donovan Caine gimmick and you took it being the good employee. Creative is ruling the business of professional wrestling and their ruining it. For the most part your claims at wanting to restore wrestling to its former glory are genuine. And if you are Pro-Life champion then that’s a big step in your campaign. Do you ever think about what would happen if you failed?
Calvin Ingram didn’t think too deeply on the scenario of himself being bested by Callahan. He showed who he was or what he was capable of. He isn’t some pushover talent or a guy to be taken likely. The top echelon of the card is calling for him to be apart of it. It was only a matter of time before he got the ball and he was going to run with it. Too many times he was shifted away from his goals by APW management. He was ready for the top and he wasn’t nervous. The warrior was ready to claim his spot on top of the wary Asylum. And things will never ever be quite the same again. As he will lead APW back into the golden age of professional wrestling and all shall become apparent.
Calvin Ingram: I’ve been hungry like a wolf ever since stepping foot into this organization. Maybe some people didn’t take to kindly to me at first. It wasn’t my fault I was given the Caine character but I was fed up with that. I wanted the fans to see the real me and what I’m capable of. Too many younger talents are following creative like a sheep. Why do you think creative is a better shepherd than I. I am your savior and I am your king let me lead by example. Michael Callahan might have been in the marines but he quit being a warrior. Being behind some desk wearing a suit and tie a politician isn’t being a warrior. I favor my royal presence as that of King Arthur of Camelot. Yes, he was a great king but he died with his fellow soldiers on the battlefield. In the legend of Beowulf he was a king but he also died at an old age to the burns of a large dragon. Those leaders never stopped being warriors and as a warrior myself I’ll never stop at being one. Through hell and high water I’ve ran through every given scenario except losing. But I also listened to the words of Sun Tzu. As he who knows when he can fight and when he cannot, will be victorious. Summarized in my own words means I won’t deviate from my promise of success and I will win. There’s no losing when I’m in there with a man who doesn’t respect the sport the way I do. A man who thinks being a common politician makes him such of a great wrestler. You are nothing but a technical tadpole while you will go head to head with the great horned toad. A change is coming to Asylum and I will give the people what they truly want and that’s great wrestling. Not mediocre or good but great.
The 75% again erupts in an uproar of cheers before a man emerges from the crowd a few feet away from Ingram & “The Coach”. The man is old and appears to a janitor at the United Center. He has big broad shoulders, light chocolate brown complexion and wore a sky blue janitorial outfit. Calvin didn’t know what to expect to hear from the gentleman’s mouth but he didn’t mind. Seeing as how he in a feel good moment, nothing could break his spirits and the man looked pleased at his sight. Aged with wisdom the janitor whose nametag said Clementine speaks up toward Ingram.
Clementine: My name is Ernest Nathan Clementine the Third and I’ve been janitor here at the United Center for fifty long years. I’m 75 years old now and you are the first main attraction to have ever lit up my spirit in awhile. Yes, the Chicago Bulls played up and down the United Center winning six championships with Michael Jordan. But, listen son you have something MJ didn’t have and that’s technical ability and word power. Jordan knew the game and was good at it but clearly he never was a media hound. He had a film and all but as far as going that extra mile with his star power he didn’t really need too. You on the other hand have the power to single handily change a company in dire need of changing. Action Pro Wrestling could be so much more but the product has been lingering for awhile now and man have you got a great chance of being their guiding light. It’s your chance to look at everyone in their face and say you know what I’m not going to lay down without a fight. Callahan is not going to stop me form achieving destiny and you go out there and achieve it.
The 75% continue to cheer as the press conference winds down to a close. Calvin Ingram is still sitting in his chair opposite the one “The Coach” occupied and is contemplating in deep thought. All the things he heard this Friday afternoon and Clementine’s speech has him fired up. The cameraman still has the camera on him and knowing this Calvin Ingram gives his final message toward Callahan before bell time that’s two short days away.
Calvin Ingram:Even after this little press conference I doubt you’ll ever get it Callahan. Why don’t you just face the facts that wrestling needs me to live on? The product needs structure; foundation and stability look no further. I am your savior admit it to yourself and your soul shall be set free. I’m not saying I’m better than you but know this I can withstand you and I can hold you down for three. I won’t tap or pass out to the Victory Lock as I know every counter in the book. Hell, maybe I’ll use your own move on you to make you squeal like the little pig that you are. I won’t rest until that Pro-Life title is again a World Wide Suicide. Funny, how the great Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam named a song that. Any song with death or suicide has more feeling than the abundance of life. Death has more meaning than life surely you know that Callahan. And id you don’t I’ll be happy to show you that. Many wrestlers came and go especially a true warrior and man who went above and beyond. I’m talking about “Outkast” Marc Maron despite never meeting him his death inspired me to continue on my path onward to the top of this professional wrestling business. No longer shall people use this business like a snot rag or a piece of toilet paper to flush down the toilet of oppression. Once again professional wrestling will rise to the top of everyone’s to watch list. Once again the revolution shall be televised. And I will beat you Callahan as it’s my purpose and it’s my destiny. In the words of the fallen “Outkast” who was a true warrior…THIS MEANS SOMETHING!!!
The footage of Calvin Ingram begins to static as he stands up from his chair. As the battle lines have finally been drawn. This truly does mean something again and again.
“Know yourself and you will win all battles.”
