The fundamentals to seeking out gold
On The Road -- SLC, Utah
July 17th 2012 – 10:00 am
For some reason, I couldn’t be stopped.
Not ego-driven, it was a true statement, factual statement. The past few weeks, I have risen to the occasion of being a rising superstar, just a few months in. Right now, I was living the life. The life that I probably shouldn’t even be near. If it wasn’t for this profession, I would be the regular, the “everything man” on the streets of Brooklyn. The drug dealer, the pimp, the kiosk man, whatever the hell else that would be out there, I’d be every bit of it, trying to do what I am doing now. Make positive out of negative. Thankful for Karin for directing me out of that light and into this light.
I’d probably be dead if it weren’t for the change-up.
But obviously, there’s people looking out for me, making sure I make it through this satanic environment and onto a better life. Am I lucky or what?
Nah, not really!
In two weeks, I hold an opportunity of a lifetime. I have a chance to do something spectacular. All this hard work is paying off in bunches. I just needed to remain focus. I had received a couple of calls from the new World Champ, Anthony Bailey, wishing me luck against Kash. He gave me some tidbits of advice to be aware of, not with Kash, but to get myself in a good position.
I was on this trip alone. I had to face these boring, open roads of Utah by myself while my baby takes the local shoe parlor by storm via her promotion. We were trying to get things settled, get things organized. I knew she hated the community but it’s hard for me when I lived here since birth. But for the both of us and future, it was the best thing.
But for right now, I had to focus on what was in front of me, Jason Kash and Johnny Sykes.
“Hey, aren’t you that ‘Jair Hopkins’ kid?” The scratchy voice was heard as it was only me on the shuttle bus. It was the driver up front who looked in his mirror to the back where I was seated with my hoodie over my head.
“Yeah that be me!” I said as I cleared my throat. Something with this air quality, it was killing my throat. Continually having to clear it, it was growing annoying.
“You are indeed something special man, keep up the good work!” He said as he kept looking back at me and what was behind him in the rear-view mirror.
“Uh, thanks! I definitely appreciate it!” I said as I wasn’t too good with compliments. It sounded a little ‘dry’.
“Those people really see something in you enough to keep putting you in situations like these. Hopefully you take advantage of every one of them.” He continued as he steadily seemed to offer advice.
I nodded my head as it suddenly hit me on an angle.
“All of this advice and compliments, who are you? A wrestler or somethin’?” I asked, as the thought hit me.
He let out a sigh, as he slowly nodded his head seconds later.
“I WAS once a wrestler, then became a trainer, now a shuttle bus driver!” He said, pretty much rolling through his life travel in less than ten words.
“Oh!” I said, nodding my head. “That’s one hell of a cool story, brother man. Why the hell would you choose shuttle bus over wrestling and training? That’s serious cash!” I said as he braked down on the bus, pulling it to the side as he turned around to me.
“Young bucks, they always ask that and I tell them …” He said as he pointed his finger to his chest, preferably his heart. “Wrestling is all about giving your heart out to thousands of fans every night, sometimes a daily basis. It’s not about money because money goes, just like your career in the long run. Fighting is all about heart and how much you want or how much you got what it takes to survive each night.” With a slightly raised voice, the emotion running at a high, he threw out a laugh as he returned to his position, putting the bus back in drive.
“If you’re in it for the dollar bill, you should get out now. Any day you can get hurt or worst, what will that money do for you then? Hospital bills, that’s about it, buddy!”
As he spoke, he put everything into a simple form. What was I doing this for, was it just to escape the life on the streets and earn money or was I doing this to showcase how much I’ve fallen in love with this lifestyle? My head started to hurt slightly.
“That my friend is advice and to answer your question to why I chose “this” over wrestling and the training. I lost my heart, I couldn’t deliver it on a nightly basis therefore I had to change professions. Don’t end up like me. Stay humble and love what you do!” He said.
“I Gotcha!” I said in reply, nodding as that was some advice I needed to hear, luckily for me, I was always in the right place.

It had been a grueling couple of days for Jair. From Utah back to Brooklyn, from Brooklyn onto Las Vegas. It was a hell of a stretch but he had to get used to it. He had to get used to it, alone. He was responsible for everything here on out instead of being beside his girl. She was on her own grind, he was on his, doing all they can to achieve one thing in common. Money. Money that would be used to leave the considered ‘hell hole’ that they were located within and live in peace. Jair had to realize that changes were going to constantly happen. He had to be on his own, do things for himself. He was now with the ‘big boys’. His dreams had come true somewhat. He was onto the next stage, and with a chance to progress even further. Last week was a successful debut, this week, it was one hell of a challenge. He was going to be in the ring with a former World Heavyweight Champ for a shot at contendership at a title, the Pro-Life title.
On the blue shuttle bus, to himself surprisingly, Jair had time to think of this week’s matchup, let some things off his chest. Decked in an Avirex Basketball jersey grey tank top, he pulled out the small camcorder that Karin had given him. He had set it up and as he shook his head, letting out a thoughtful sigh, he cleared his throat as he flicked the switch on the camera, immediately hitting the record button.

J-Hop: Life is full of beauty when she has on that right dress. Life is even more precious when all flows well without any ‘kinks’. So far, so good but I know it’s only one week in. Last week, I rid of the psycho nuthead in Mike Morrison. He tried and tried, but failed. I give him credit, he didn’t back down, he didn’t give up. If he only had not made a few costly mistakes, he could’ve handed me my first loss on Asylum in my debut … but it didn’t happen. To me, I guess the scouts loved my quick learning and progression in ring because here I am, one week removed from the debut, heading into the match of my life. I’m sure this will not be the last, but you never know. Unlike my couple of showings during high-profile matches in Meltdown, I will not be that let down that moped in the ring, eventually getting booted out. I will take this match to its very limit. I will put “Kermit” Kash in a very rare, uncomfortable position and try to ‘syke’ out Johnny.
Jair smirks as he plays with the words. He goes back to a much serious look.
J-Hop: I’m planning to go into this thing, expecting to win it and in the end, hopefully complete it successfully. I know Kash has been on a ‘down of luck’ recently since “Test For The Best”, I know he hasn’t been as much of a ‘smiler’ as he was in the past. Losing something that precious will do that to you, doesn’t matter if you’re good or evil. I didn’t even win shit and I know after I failed to take that bull by it’s horns in Meltdown, I felt like complete shit, but I survived it. I didn’t sit and look at the sky, asking God “O’Why Me?”
J-Hop: Shit happens, whether you deserve it or not.
J-Hop: For Kash, it was a strike of reality that hit him. My man Anthony Bailey had been on the back of Kash’s rear bumper for quite some time and Kash thought that no matter what, he wasn’t going to lose. That three letter word “Ego” tripped him and he immediately fell. Ego is like that fine ass bitch that waltzes past you. You follow her, she grinds on you, making you feel good then the next thing you know, she up and ditches your dumb ass and leaves you stuck in a bad position. That’s why I just remain who I am, fuck the bitches, fuck ego, it only leads to bad shit and for you ‘Kash-man’, it left you with your arms wide open. It stutter-stepped you and spun away and off it was, to the 15 …. The 10 …. The 5 …”
J-Hop: You know the rest but enough of getting you riled up, it’s not just you in this match, we have the one and only, Johnny Sykes, the man they call “The Original Pranksta”. Don’t worry, you will not be the ‘forgotten’ one in this contest. I mean, after all, Kash does have plans for you with that sledgehammer. You get the easy way out, I have to dodge fucking splattering bullets. But us two have two things over the former ‘champ’, Johnny. One, we both won our showcase matches last week, Two, we didn’t get beat by a female. Advantage Plus-Plus!
Jair covers his face as he shakes his head.
J-Hop: Damn, I said I was going to leave Kash alone, guess I had to get in another shot. Sykes, while you may have taken down Phil Atken last week, this will be a battle of the toughest motherfucker. Somewhat of a light at the end of the tunnel for you Johnny is that one of US will DEFEAT Jason Kash to become number one contender to Callahan’s Pro-Life title. Enough said!
Jair sighs as he sees the shuttle bus slowing down to the destination.
J-Hop: Come the 29th, I will do something no other rookie has possibly done. I will take down Jason Kash, shotgun and all and send him to defeat … yet again. He lost to a chick last week and this time around, he’s going to lose to Jar Jar Binks which will yet be another embarrassing moment. Even if given tips from the Champ, I can’t ride on those tips like Aladdin’s magic carpet, I have to take my own course and fly with it. If I lose, fine, re-adjust, if I win, then hey, watching those match films really helped me out. So Johnny and Jason, this match is full of the letter “J” so I hope in the end it will lead me to a jovial smile.
Jair wraps it up as he hits the stop button. All fades.
