Which fades away to a shot of the megastar we all love the most: Sally Talfourd. A close-up on her face. He eyes are closed, and a peace has come across her face. As the shot comes out, we find Sally sitting. Meditating, her hands opened up on her crossed-legged knees. Beside her, sits a boy. Maybe 14? Maybe 15? A young boy who, if you looked twice, you’d have sworn it was a younger version of a certain APW World Heavyweight Champion.
[Sally] Breath, and feel your stillness. Breath.
Together the two breath. Without flinching or opening her eyes, Sally talks to the boy.
[Sally] Happiness. We should all be happy and well. Sabbe satta sukhi hontu. All beings in this world - they should be happy and well. Happy in mind and well in body. So it is that you will learn both of these through the power of the mind. But you cannot simply achieve this simply. You must work with your mind and work with your body to achieve it. Happiness and wellness are of the utmost importance.
[Boy] How can I be happy?
[Sally] By being well.
[Boy] Then how can I be well?
[Sally] By being happy.
The young boy peeks a look at Sally, who still sits there content and eyes closed. Of course, a slight grin takes the corner or her mouth for a moment. The boy, before he can be caught, snaps back to meditation.
[Sally] Happiness depends on your body. Happiness comes from success, but success comes from your body. Your body needs to be well, and only then can you succeed. Success in the ring only comes when you have a well body. A well body is a fit body. A fit body is a weapon.
[Boy] A weapon?
[Sally] Yes, a weapon. A weapon for you to not engage in aggression but defense. Not in violence but an art-form. Not in vengeance but in competition. Your body is your weapon in a ring, and you are to use it wisely. You need to have the best weapon in order to win the battle that you are faced with each time. You must have the strongest weapon otherwise you will fail.
[Boy] A strong body?
[Sally] A strong body and a strong mind. Your weapon is two-fold - it is what you see and what you cannot see. Only when both are strong can you truly come to be successful.
[Boy] Successful like you?
[Sally] I may look successful to you, but to others I am not. Consider those that have fought before me. Those whose names are as known as mine.
[Boy] Level-One?
[Sally] Yes, like him. Would I be successful compared to him? Of course not.
[Boy] Am I successful?
[Sally] Are you successful ... or are you successful compared to me? What you have done yourself is success, but what are you when you measure yourself to the others that surround you? What you need to be doing is attaining a new level of success each time you feel satisfied. Relish in your momentary success for it is only temporary. You must further yourself with the seeking out of more success. Never be satisfied in where you find yourself - always be looking for a further, higher plain.
Sally finally comes to open her eyes and flex her hands. With a longer than anticipated pause, the boy beside her comes to and then starts to stir himself. Sally hops up to her feet, then quickly so does the boy.
[Boy] Thanks, Sally.
[Sally] For what?
[Boy] Coming to visit, the meditation, things like that. It’s always nice when you stop by. I always learn something.
Sally tries to ruffle the boy’s hair, but it’s so short that nothing happens. She smiles, then pulls him in to her as she starts to walk. It’s now that we find them in a yard of sorts, Grass underfoot, toys and a swing-set behind them, all fenced in.
[Sally] It’s nothing. You know I love stopping in! We might not be neighbours anymore, but we’re still friends right? You know, I can still remember your parents bringing you home for the first time. You were so tiny!
The two manage to walk their way back inside - in side of the home that would seemingly own the yard - and, after some shuffling about and cleaning they’re seating at a plain old table with some plain old chair. Quite the contrast to the glamorous and swank lifestyle that we usually find Sally living up.
[Boy] Hey Sally, why do you meditate?
[Sally] Because it lets you clear out your mind and really focus on who you really are. And I taught you so that you could clear out your mind from all sorts of things that are going on and focus on making something happen!
[Boy] Have you taught everyone you know?
[Sally] I teach people, but not always to meditate.
[Boy] What else do you teach people?
[Sally] Well, I’d like to think I teach people how to be better. A better person. Better at what they do. Better and how they live. Like, there’s this guy I’ve been trying to help out lately. He’s really nice and all, just ... he needs to learn things.
[Boy] But you said we all need to keep on learning?
[Sally] We do, we do. But, put it this way: You learn from me, don’t you? *The boy nods*[/b] Because I’m older? *Another nod*[/b] Have more experience? *Another nod*[/b] So maybe I know a thing or two. And it’s important that we all share what we know. That way, everyone is better for it, you see? If I tell you what it took me all these years to learn ... and I tell you before you have to go through it all ... imagine what you could achieve? That’s what I’m doing with my new friend. I’m trying to tell him and teach him and show him everything that I had to go through to become who I am. If he’d listen to me ... if he’d actually pay attention to everything that I’m trying to tell him, he could be so much better than I ever was. [/color]
[Boy] What if he doesn’t listen?
[Sally] Well, he will go through everything I had to go through. And what’s the point of that? If we share what we know, then we can do better. You see, my friend is a wrestler too. If he listened to me and tried make sure that he didn’t make the same mistakes I made, he could be the best in the business. He could make fans like you love wrestling even more. He could be the biggest name in the business. But he just didn’t seem to want to listen to me, or to even ask how I could help.
[Boy] So now what?
Sally goes to speak, but has to pull herself up short. She can’t just say “Now I’m going to fight him to make him listen” but that’s what it is, isn’t it? Anthony won his title, and yes he had to defend it against the number one contender, but it didn’t have to come to this. I mean, the suspicion? The intrigue? The shiftiness? It could have easily been a match with a handshake at the start, a handshake at the end, and then a whole lot of ‘wow’ in the middle. Now, after some accidental chair shots and some ‘will she, won’t she’ moments, you can’t say that the match is going to be exactly the same, can you? Sally looks away from her friend, unable to square him in the eye as she talks now.
[Sally] Well, I keep on teaching. I keep on trying to teach him. But, as you and I know, you don’t just teach through words, do you? When we meditate we learn, right? We can learn through actions. And now ... well ... now I get to teach my new friend through actions. We’re both wrestlers and we use a language that we both understand. We’ll wrestle each other, and I’ll teach him that way. You can learn through words and you can learn through experience, right? Well, I’ll put him through all of those experiences I went through to learn what I learnt. That way he can quickly learn if he’s got it or not.
[Boy] Got what?
[Sally] Got what it takes to be as good as me? Better than me? Like I said, you should always be looking to get to the next level of success. He should want to get better than me. He needs to, if he wants to be a great champion. A champion like I was. And yet ... he didn’t want to hear about it. He didn’t want to know what he needed to do. And now, he has to learn a different way. Yes, it would have been easier to learn just by listening. But he didn’t, so now he needs to learn in a different way. I’m not giving up on my new friend. I know he has it in him to be be great. But he just has to listen to those around him who want to help him. Because there’s plenty of people who want to see him become famous.
And that’s certainly true. There’s few people in the world who don’t want to see Anthony Bailey become one of the biggest names in the business. And he’s almost there, but he just needs to take himself and everything about him that one step further. And here, at Shockwave, he will be forced to either make that step or realise that he needs to go back and learn how to walk all over again. Anthony is great, there’s no doubt about that. But he could be the greatest. And all it takes is one of those career defining moments ... that match that you are remembered for ... that time when you went from being thought as a break out to being a top tier talent.
[Sally] And, you know, if he’s not quite ready yet to be one of the biggest and best, then I know that I am and I’m more than happy to back up what I say. You see, he has a belt. And the holder of that belt is supposed to be the best. And, you know, if he’s not the best, he shouldn’t have it should he? I want to test him, but if he fails the test ... I’m the only one left who can step in his place. You’ll remember when I was a champion a long time ago, right? *The boy nods*[/b] Well, I might be again, but it’s only if my friend isn’t good enough to be better than me. My friend should be trying to be more successful, and I should be trying too. But my success is different. It’s not just about being a champion ... it’s about making sure the champions are the best in the business. You see, when I was a champion, there were others that pushed me. Now that new people are champions, someone has to push them. That’s what makes me successful - when I help make my TV show successful. [/color]
[Boy] You mean Asylum?
[Sally] Yeah, you watch it every time it’s on, yeah?
[Boy] Of course! Every time! It’s the best show on.
[Sally] Because I’m on it? *The boy nods eagerly with a smile*[/b] I guess I taught you right! And I’ll be on it forever. It doesn’t matter if I’m champion or not on it - what matters is that the brand, the show I’m part of, is also considered the best. That we have the best matches, the best fans, and the best champions. It’s, like, my duty now to make sure the champions are the best in the business. And if my freind can’t be the best, he should know it. You know, a true friend is honest and helpful. they doesn’t talk behind your back, they don’t hurt you, they don’t try to ruin you. They try to help you. It’s what I’ve with you, right? I’ve tried to help you for a long time. And now you’re going great. Great grades, great school, great life you’ve got going. A true friend makes sure that you’re life is going great. They don’t stop when things look great. I mean, when you got into your new school I kept helping you. That’s what friends do - when they’re going good, they make sure you stay good. They make sure that when you’re on top, you stay good enough. And if you’re not, they help you. They don’t just tear you down. Friends help each other as best they can. And that’s what I’m doing with my friend. I’m helping him. [/color]
Sally finishes up with a smile that tells us all that she genuinely believes what she’s saying here. And, in all honesty, it is probably the truth. She really wants to help Anthony. If this is the way that she has to do it, then so be it. Wrestling can be a cruel business, but if you can come out of it with a genuine respect and fondness for those you call friends, then you’ve come out a winner no matter what titles and awards you’ve been given. Of course, titles and awards are nice, but it’s not all about that. It’s about the frienship and the trust and the respect. The shot fades out on Sally and her friend sitting there at the table, still talking about whatever takes their fancy to a blank, black screen. There’s a hold and then
