Three Hours Before Shockwave
“Fuck you!”
Chris turns away from the picture before looking at the door for a moment at the lingering spectre of Kurt Noble. Quickly however, he switches his fixation to the cell phone in his hand as he begins to aimlessly play with it – allowing his thoughts to continue to stew in his head. Behind him, the handle of the door turns and it slowly slides open as Kylie Demenz silently slithers into the room. Chris leans back into the sofa, letting his neck fall back as he looks down at the duffel bag next to him, then at the clock on the wall and gives a deep sigh.
Kylie smiles gently at the noticeable restraint from Chris Hart as she steps up behind him and reaches out and grabs him by the trapezius muscles, causing Chris to flinch before he relaxes as the fingers of Kylie begin to slowly massage the tightness out. “I’m sorry Amy. I’m trying but it’s that bitch Kylie …”
“So that’s what you think of me now, huh?” Kylie interrupts Chris, letting go of him as he pinwheels around and glares at her. “Little bit different than when you were enjoying the spoils of being a champion” she adds as she slowly lowers the top of her tight cut blouse exposing just a hint of a lacy pink bra – a smirk on her face.
“I guess so” Chris flatly opines before dismissively turning around, ignoring the presence of Kylie.
“It doesn’t have to be like this you know?” Kylie asks as she steps around the arm of the sofa and tries to slide in next to Chris. “I don’t get why you would choose the wife of your best friend who you obviously can’t have, over someone who can not only satisfy you personally, but could also take you professionally to heights you’ve never imagined.”
Chris turns and glares at her for a moment before once again turning away. “That’s exactly it Kylie, you don’t get it” Chris says as he pushes himself away from the advancing seductress.
“Now, I do Chris. You’re valiant to a fault, you value friendship beyond anything else but there comes a time in everyone’s life where they have to make a tough decision Kylie says as she gets up from the couch, realizing that her suggestive actions are going to get her nowhere in the conversation. “You have to decide whether you want to be remembered as someone great like Kurt Noble or just another wrestler – one fortunate enough to have teamed up with a once in a generation talent to get his modicum of success.”
“This isn’t a hard one at all” Chris sneers at her, the inflection his voice carrying far greater weight than the verbiage used. “If you’re looking to waste someone’s time – why don’t you go and try someone that cares like Terry Marvin.”
Kylie smiles to herself at the accusations Chris has just implicitly levied before removing it and turning once again to face her pink shirted accuser. “I did what needed to be done to make sure that Kurt Noble continued to enjoy the success that he’s experiencing. That’s what this is all about Chris, is making sure that there is no one in this company who dares think they can take down Kurt Noble – not even you.”
“I don’t think it Kylie, I know it” Chris says with the fire in his eyes starting to grow once again.
“I highly doubt that …” Kylie starts before she’s interrupted.
“Not only that Kylie, I know that if Kurt continues to hang around with you it’s going to become necessary and I’m prepared to do whatever it takes Kylie. I made a promise … and I’m not going to break it.”
Kylie haughtily laughs at Chris for a moment as she leans on the small bar counter in the corner. “You know what I know Chris? That you’re deluded in thinking you can beat Kurt Noble. He’s pulled you off the scrap heap time and time again and given you everything you have and now you think you can stand up to him. You’re pathetic Chris, always have been and always will be and you’re going to prove that again tonight when Level-One mops the canvas with your face – and this time Kurt Noble isn’t there to bail you out.”
“You really think that’s going to happen Kylie?” Chris asks with surprising sincerity in her voice.
“I’ve got money on it” she replies, mustering as much venom as possible in her voice – which shockingly brings a smile to the face of Chris as she heads for the door.
“Good – just puts me one step closer to bankrupting your entire operation. I’ve made a career out of proving doubters wrong Kylie in case you don’t remember. You’re entire little game that you played before Test for the Best that you were so pleased with – do you really think this isn’t doing the exact same thing?”
Kylie stops in her tracks and turns and stares at Chris, studying for a moment but unable to read through his steely expression at all. “Do you really think I’m that stupid Chris?” Kylie says, pausing a moment to allow Chris to respond but instead his silence bids her continuance. “Despite the fact that you’re a lamb for slaughter this evening that doesn’t mean you don’t serve a purpose. The assault you suffered two weeks ago is just more fuel to the fire for Kurt this evening – but it’s not just that, you’ve also served as a somewhat valued distraction for Level-One.”
Chris nods his head, fully acknowledging his role as a pawn in the chess game being played by Kylie Demenz. “And if you were for some reason to become slightly infuriated at the lack of faith in your abilities by Level-One, myself and … really, everyone else and decided to show them that you were worthy and were to legitimately injure Level-One that’s not an objectionable outcome. It’s just one less person in the way of Kurt Noble’s reign as Undisputed Champion.”
Chris stares at her for a moment before a facetious grin emerges on his face. “I’m not going to do that for you Kylie. I’m going to beat Level-One tonight but I’m not going to leave him in a bloodied heap in the centre of the ring and I’m going to tell him I didn’t because of you. What do you think that’s going to do to Level-One Kylie, knowing that you … and by association Kurt Noble spared him, showed him the mercy that is befitting only for the weak?”
Kylie stares at Chris for a moment, realizing that he is already one step ahead of her in the chess game that is currently enveloping Action Packed Wrestling. “Like I told Kurt Kylie, I’m going to do anything it takes to keep my promise.”
Her gaze remains on Chris for a moment before she finally shakes herself free of the self-controlled, rage induced trance and peeks down at the diamond wristwatch on her left arm – before she curiously reaches up and tussles her hair. Chris stares at her in confusion which is only further exacerbated as she unbuttons her blouse leaving only one button in the middle remaining. “The game never ends Chris – remember that.”
It hits Chris as he looks past the enticing figure at the poster of Kurt Noble from Rasslemania and once again the smirking smile returns to her face. “You really are a bitch” he says as Kylie poses slightly for her him before heading towards the door.
“Viva la vida!” Kylie says, as immediately Chris’ face turns red with rage at the bastardization of the former Kurt Noble’s signature phrase. Seeing this, Kylie smiles, as she turns the door handle and does up another button on her blouse before stepping out and pulling it shut behind her. Chris continues to stare at the poster momentarily before turning away and once again emitting a heavy sigh.
“Why Kurt …”
“This is all your fault”
“I’m talking to you right now Level-One, not the twenty thousand people that are going to watch us work our magic at Staples Center – not the million people that are going to shill out fifty bucks to watch us on pay-per-view.
“No, this is personal.
“This isn’t just about your continued denigration of me as a wrestler, the fact that you continually refuse to look me in the eye and instead decide to take my back like you’re some Ricky Martin wannabe, or that you decide to get your ‘associate’ Felipe to do the deed for you. No, this is because when I look at Action Packed Wrestling and everything that’s wrong with it there’s only person who’s finger prints are all over it.
“So let’s play the blame game Kanye!”
“You’re the reason that Kurt Noble’s lost his mind, you’re the reason that there’s so many lunatics running around Action Packed Wrestling that Kurt Noble has to save it from and now it’s not a matter of if, but when, he’s going to snap and I’m going to have to do something I really don’t want to do. That all is on your head Level-One, you’re the one responsible for everything that’s gone on around this company over the past six months and I for one haven’t forgotten.
“I haven’t forgotten that it was you that drove the wedge between Kurt Noble and CJ Gates by offering Kurt a spot in the Syndicate. That it was the two of you attacking them while restraining the other that sowed the seeds of doubt about who really had who’s back in the equation. Action Packed Wrestling was recovering, Gotham was on the way up with our own Harvey Dent and Batman but you decided it would be fun to play the role of Joker and plunge our company back into the dark ages it had emerged from.
“You managed to pit two of the people who were shining lights for APW against each other and dimmed them – you took our dreams of finally getting to see people fighting over the Undisputed Championship for the prestige and honour of being champion as opposed to some petty squabble that leads to nothing but bitter feelings and shortened careers. We had finally managed to get the stink out of the room and you walked right back in and let another one rip. Tonight however I’m going to firmly wedge my boot so far up your ass you don’t have a chance to do that again.
“And that’s a promise.
“That was just the start for you though Level-One – this is your crack cocaine, driving people apart and causing mass panic and despair. That’s what the Syndicate is all about, it’s why you’re trying to bring Johnny Rebel back to Overdrive because he’s been there right from the beginning next to you – but you and I both know there’s another problem you’ve caused in Action Packed Wrestling that’s a little bit more relevant at the present time than CJ Gates.
“Terry Marvin didn’t need your help to be an egotistical twat; he had that mastered before his mother spread her legs once again. He didn’t need your help to reach the top but you simply couldn’t help yourself from sticking your fingers in the cookie jar – or better yet string him up like a marionette and play the role of puppeteer, allowing him to sing and dance unbeknownst that his movements were all controlled by a master manipulator. It was smart Geppetto, you didn’t need to actively play a role in Terry Marvin’s meteoric rise to the top of APW – all you had to do was promote his violent side and allow him to catch the eye of Kurt Noble enough so he’d acknowledge him as a threat and with one swing of a steal chair – you did that.
“And that’s when it became really personal Level-One. At the end of the day I’m not Kurt Noble concerned with the well being of Action Packed Wrestling. The fate of the world as we know it doesn’t rest on whether Action Packed Wrestling is a success or not, my circumstances are not determined by whether APW is wrestling in sold out arenas or bingo halls. It is determined however by the state my friends find themselves in and when someone jeopardizes their health and happiness then we start having problems. I’m going to handle this problem Level-One …
“And that’s a promise.
“You see, Kurt Noble blames Terry Marvin for attacking Amy Noble but if it weren’t for you Terry would’ve tried to sleep with her instead. If it weren’t for you getting involved and bludgeoning me, leaving Kurt prone Amy wouldn’t have had to come out and try and plead for our safety. It was all your fault Level-One and that’s something I refuse to accept. Kurt Noble’s a big boy, he can handle himself in any situation you put him in but Amy Noble’s a different story. As far as she’s concerned there’s no limits I won’t cross to avenge her. Level One, I’m going to destroy you for Amy Noble …
“And that’s a promise.
“But unlike Kurt however I’m not going to physically decimate you Level-One. I’m not going to try and end your career – instead I’m going to do cripple your psychologically by doing something you didn’t think was possible. Beat you one on one in the center of the ring for everyone to see.
“I’m going to make you accept that I’m better than you. I’m going to prove to everyone that you’re a liar, that this isn’t your show anymore. More importantly though I’m going to put a stop to your quest to get back the Undisputed Championship – that’s going to be the dagger right through your heart because that’s what this is all about – what the last six months have been for, isn’t that right ... Lester!
“Everything has been about Kurt Noble from the very beginning. It’s been about putting yourself in a position so that when the time is right you can reclaim what you perceive to be as your rightful place atop the throne as Undisputed Champion. You’ve caused the downfall of Kurt Noble so that you could pick up the shattered pieces and take them with you along with the Undisputed Champion. You never cared about Johnny Rebel – he was simply the biggest rival of Kurt Noble and you knew that teaming up with him would get Kurt’s attention. You never cared about CJ Gates but you knew that if you could turn him against Kurt that he’d start to acknowledge APW had a problem and then Terry Marvin and Amy Noble were the last straw.
“You’ve played the game to perfection Lester. In fact, if I weren’t involved I would applaud the way you’ve orchestrated everything so perfectly but now that it’s become personal I’m not going to give you the dissatisfaction of being acknowledged by a puissant like me. Kurt Noble is going to beat Terry Marvin this evening but in the end it’s going to force him past his breaking point. It’s going to put him on an island all by himself. It’s going to put him in the position you wanted him in, with no one left to fight for him, no one to stand beside him and the people finally realizing that he’s nothing but a broken man who’s actions are no longer worthy of their respect.
“They won’t believe in him anymore and the alternative they’ll be presented is the Syndicate and yourself. With no one to support him Kurt Noble will finally break and it will be all your doing – you’ll be able to stand atop your mountain and say that all the problems you caused were by Kurt Noble and no one will argue because the evidence will be seemingly overwhelming. You’ll have done what some considered impossible Lester but I always knew you had it in you. I knew one day it might come to this and I came prepared. I’m not going to let you complete the final act of your drama Lester tonight the curtain is going to close upon you …
“And that’s a promise.
“And once I’m finished with you Lester, it’s going to fall to me to clean up the mess you caused and what sickens me is the cost. I’m going to have to put an end to the friendship Kurt Noble and I shared. I’m going to have to bring him crumbling down. I’m going to have to play your part in the theatre Lester but there’s one slight difference in our characters. I’m not in it for the glory Lester, as opposed to breaking Kurt Noble I’m going to save him.
“So rest assured Lester. You’re going to get to see the end of Kurt Noble one way or another. Your plan, in it’s truest sense is going to come together with the slight deviation from it’s original course. You’re going to have brought down Kurt Noble Lester, that much is true. You’re going to have put an end to the final hero of Action Packed Wrestling and one of the best men professionally wrestling has ever been blessed with. For me, tonight, no matter what happens in the ring Level-One I’m going to walk out the loser; I’ve already spun the wheel of destiny and my fates sealed Level One – that’s out my control. Tonight the only thing in my control is yours. All I can do is make sure that if I’m going down that you’re coming with me …
“And that’s a promise!”
“Fuck you!”
