The scene opens with a couple of different panning shots from cameras set up near the Air Canada Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada during the sunny afternoon. The cameras sweep across the building and a large crowd that is gathered outside of it before a relatively small platform. There are a couple of banners hanging from the backdrop of the platform which promote the upcoming APW Meltdown show in Toronto.
Looking over the crowd, which was easily in the mid hundreds, a lot of them are wearing assorted APW related attire, as well as many others sporting all sorts of clothing featuring several different Canadian wrestlers. Loudspeaker stands are set up at regular intervals around the area and can be seen easily among the edge of the crowd. The platform is currently clear and the crowd is waiting, some patiently, others anxiously, for things to begin.
The view switches to a camera close beside the platform, before a man dressed fairly casually, a nice pair of black shoes, dark brown pants and wearing an APW Meltdown t-shirt starts making his way out onto the platform. He has blonde hair tied back behind his head in a short ponytail and he also has a neatly trimmed goatee. Once he’d near the middle of the platform he waves to the crowd, which give him a bit of a cheer in response. He raises a microphone he’d been carrying with him and begins to address the crowd.
“Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our first APW Fan Access event here in Toronto!”
The crowd lets out another cheer in response.
”We’ve got some of the Meltdown megastars with us today and as you know we’ll be having them come out for an interactive session with all of you here and as well later on were going to have autograph and photo opportunities available for those of you who are interested. I know that most of you know who is going to be here today, but we were able to get one more megastar to attend this event on late notice.”
The crowd murmurs in response, some people wondering, but then there are other cheers from sections of the crowd.
”Given this star’s relationship with Toronto, we thought it might be best for us to start off this show with him so allow me to turn it over to him, Toronto’s own… Logan Alexander!”
The crowd gathered around erupts into louder cheers. It’s only a few moments before Logan emerges from around behind the back of the platform and makes his way up onto it, waving around at the assembled crowd as there are chants of ‘Logan!’ echoing out around him. He’s dressed casually in black pants, a blue t-shirt, running shoes and a pair of sunglasses. He moves over to the man who’d introduced him. He shakes his hand and takes hold of the microphone. The other man heads off the platform and Logan turns to look around at the assembled crowd, smiling broadly at them. He raises the microphone and addresses the crowd.
”Thank you! Thank you all!”
The crowd cheers Logan in response and a ‘Welcome back!’ chant begins slowly, but spreads through the crowd.
”I know I shouldn’t be surprised by having such a response at an event like this in my home city, but I still find it touching nonetheless. It’s good to know that even after all the time that has passed and everything that has happened during the last couple of years that I still have your support. I appreciate it more than I’ll ever be able to express.”
“I’m hoping this run lasts a whole lot longer than my last one did. Having a few more years to create a whole new bunch of memories and accomplish a whole lot more and leave all of my fans with a whole lot more to talk about for years to come afterwards.”
The crowd cheers him in response while Logan walks back and forth on the platform, smiling out at them.
”Last week was a big week… my return to action after an extended layoff and it was the week were everything started anew for me. I had a new partner by my side and we have some lofty goals we’d like to accomplish. We were over in Vancouver and we made a statement in APW. In week one Aubrey and I knocked off the number two team in all of APW. Yarmouth and Stefan Raab, the European Invasion…”
The crowd boos. Logan lowers the mic and looks around at the crowd, looking slightly amused. He lifts the mic and resumes.
”You know… I thought Canadians were supposed to be tolerant.”
Laughs ripple through the crowd in response.
”I’m sure you think you can be held to a different standard just because you’re wrestling fans…”
The crowd responds with a loud ‘Yes!’ Logan shakes his head slightly, smirking as he does so.
”You people can be bad at times. Anyway, the number one contenders walked into that match last week full of disrespect and loaded with overconfidence. During the week they casually dismissed Aubrey and I leading up to that match. They figured that just because we were the two new kids in APW that they had all the advantages coming in. They figured that the two of them, a rookie and a man who conducts himself like a rookie, were going to beat the newest APW roster additions, despite our combined ring experience.”
“Eight years of experience, they casually dismissed it. Facing a talented and accomplished competitor in the ring, they wouldn’t take her seriously because she was a woman. They were a pair of nobodies, gave themselves a team name, beat a couple of thrown together teams, and suddenly thought they were the kings of the world. Those… are all rookie mistakes. Should it really come as any surprise what happened last week?”
The crowd responds with a ‘No!’ as Logan looks around at them.
”With just a little help from me, Aubrey knocked out the giant Yarmouth. Then I showed Raab how to do his own finishing move properly. And who did that leave standing tall in the ring?”
The crowd starts chanting ‘M&M’ over and over.
”Damn right! That was just a match to make a statement. We had nothing to win, they had nothing to lose. We came out and beat the pretenders to the Tag titles and sent them on their way to the next level of APW with the reminder that they aren’t ready for it. Sure they’re moving on up, but now they have to do more than just talk up a big game. Aubrey and I though, we’re looking to build on the first impression that we left last week. Unfortunately, the tag team division in APW is in shambles. I can only see one credible team in the whole company for us to face, and they are the Tag Team champions. And despite the fact that both of them walked into Overdrive a few days ago, you can’t assume that either of them are physically and mentally at one hundred percent.”
“So, since M&M are not the number one contenders, we won’t get to see Noble-Hart in the near future, which does give them time to recover before having to face any real competition for their titles. That leaves us to face whatever slapped together tandem the front office decides to throw our way. So… as much as I would love to say that my return to the Air Canada Center in Toronto on Monday night will be a huge affair given the five year gap between it and my last match here, I cannot.”
The crowd boos. Logan holds up his hands looking quite apologetic.
”I know… it is most unfortunate. My previous matches here were career defining moments. This next one is just going to be an opportunity for me to shake off a bit more of the ring rust I’ve accumulated over the last year and a half, as M&M will face off with Comikaze.”
The crowd resumes booing at the mention of their hometown representative’s opponents.
”The first thing I want to be sure of is that I don’t just dismiss this team entirely… but it’s just so difficult. They seem like characters from out of a bad cartoon series. Maybe that is intentional. They seem like a pair of kids who are coming into this business because they think it will be fun. Self styled ‘superheroes’ that now want to wrestle… for the greater good I suppose.”
“Well, they are a high flying tag team, and they do remind me of someone else I met five years ago… That is enough to keep me from dismissing them because sometimes the unexpected happens.”
Not many people know what Logan is referring to, and he doesn’t elaborate before forging on.
”Red crow and Snake boy… you two have got a very stiff challenge waiting for you this week. This is your professional debut and I’m sure you’re both going to be trying to make a great impression here in APW, but you’re going to be stepping in with a no nonsense wrestler that is used to dealing with younger upstarts such as yourselves.”
“I’m the opposite of what you two are going to be bringing into this match up. You’re going to be looking for the quick pace, high energy, big move approach in the ring. I’m going to be introducing the both of you to the slower, methodical, wear down, technical wrestling approach that has let me beat or at least hold my own against every in ring style I’ve ever faced.”
“I’ve got the experience advantage over the both of you. You may both be unknowns, but I’ve seen enough in the ring over the years that it won’t take me too long to figure out how you two approach things and what will be the best way to bring the fight to the both of you.”
“You two might have a slight advantage in teamwork. You’ve known each other longer and you’ve worked together almost exclusively for years. But you’re stepping into a relatively new environment. How prepared are the two of you for what you’re going to be facing in just a few nights?”
“I’m not betting on you two really being ready for what you’re going to have to face.”
Logan pauses and the crowd cheers his declaration.
”Aubrey and I have gone toe to toe with some formidable opponents. We both know what it’s like to be pushed to your limit and then have to find a way beyond it. We know what it takes to be winners. We know what it takes to be champions. On top of all that, we’re going to have a huge crowd backing us loudly from the moment we step out from behind the curtain. You’re going to be in a hostile environment the likes of which you’ve possibly never experienced first hand.”
“Can either of you truly say that you’re ready to overcome all of that? Or be able to match that? Or even begin to approach what is needed to match that? You two are new to this, so you probably don’t know what you’re going to need to succeed against those of us who’ve been doing this for years.”
“While this might be your first professional match, you’re going to have to expect no sympathy and no mercy from M&M. We’re not here to do you any favours or help you develop into future stars. We’re here to beat you. Whether it’s a long drawn out process where we push you by degrees and find out gradually just how much you can handle or we just go out and batter the two of you all around the ring and aim to finish you as swiftly and brutally as possible, the end goal is the same.”
“Last week, M&M had taken their first step forward. This week, we aren’t going to let you two fan boys succeed in making us take a step back. We’re ready to step on you so that we can move on ahead to bigger and better things.”
The crowd cheers and begins chanting M&M over and over again. Logan nods and looks around at the crowd, urging them on. After almost a minute of this cheering, Logan lifts his mic once more.
“Comikaze… it is an oddly fitting name for our opponents, isn’t it? If you replace it with the proper word that it implies, you know exactly what will happen to the two high flyers Red crow and Snake boy this week… Right here in Toronto, Comikaze are going to crash and burn.”
The crowd continues to cheer for Logan. The camera holds it focus on him for several moments and before the scene fades to black.
A new scene opens up before us with a camera now watching Logan sitting behind a desk, presumably in his training center/school. He's sitting back in his chair, looking through some documentation. It's later in the day as we see the sun going down through the window, yet he is still dressed in the attire worn at the Fan Access event hours earlier. What happens next comes as a surprise to Logan Alexander. There is no verbal warning... He doesn't even quite hear footsteps. Logan can only brace himself as something smashes against the outside of his door, blasting it open with one shot. Aubrey J. Parker steps into the room, a scowl on her face that Logan couldn't quite remember seeing directed toward himself in years. Logan inclines his head slightly as he regards Aubrey.
"That's... a unique knock."
"Logan. What the fuck?"
"This isn't about the Access event is it?”
Aubrey scoffs, but it sounds more forced than anything resembling actual malice.
"No, it's not about the damn event. It's about the lackthereof. MY lackthereof in particular.”
Logan sets his papers down on the desk, looks at Aubrey, and motions to a chair across the desk from his.
"I don't--"
Aubrey cuts herself off in mid-sentence and takes a seat crossing her arms in a juvenile fashion.
"So what would you like then?”
He watches her quietly.
"I'd... Like to know why you completely ditched me. Didn't even invite me to the event. I thought this was supposed to be a team.”
"I didn't invite you because you weren't invited.”
"Mmm. Ouch. This is some great team unity we have here. I'm really impressed.”
"If it was my call, you would have been there. But this was not a Logan run production.”
He continues to just watch her reaction.
"This was planned by APW at least a month in advance. They'd filled out their talent quota, but they asked for me specifically because it was to be held in my hometown. Now, I could have turned it down because you weren't asked... but what would that have accomplished?”
Aubrey looks everywhere in the office except Logan for as long as she can. Her arms remain folded and her jaw is clenched.
"Nothing.”
"Would you have done differently had our roles been reversed and we were near Pleasanton for a show?”
Aubrey smiles bitterly, but agan-- there no malice, but overwhelming envy.
"I don't think they would have excluded you in the first place, Logan.”
He smiles slightly.
"Possibly. But this is Canada. The fans here never forget their wrestling heroes. Not so for me in the States. Down there, I'm just another new guy in APW. Don't forget, two years ago those fans booed me heartily. They may not be so keen to run and get my autograph now.”
"Who knows?”
She positions herself at the edge of her seat, as if ready to exit the room, but pauses.
"We need to break ComiKaze before they even get off the ground. I intend to anyway, then APW won't ever forget me again. NO ONE is going to forget me, Logan. I'm not okay with that.”
Logan narrows his eyes slightly as Aubrey speaks. He doesn't say anything for a few moments, but then nods.
"I understand. But... you need to keep in mind that recognition isn't ever just doled out because you demand it. There are very few overnight successes who get what they think they deserve in short order.”
He shifts forward and rests his hands together in front of him on his desk.
"Don't let this consume you. That was Evan's mistake.”
Parker's eyes widen at the mention of the name. Her lips contort to form some sort of response, but catching Logan's gaze, AJP thinks better of it. A sudden panic washes over her and she subdues it by pushing herself up, out of the chair which suddenly seemed to become unbearably uncomfortable.
"I'm not.”
Logan watches her and his expression softens.
"There's no hurry. We're not going to be running the show anytime soon. But between now and then, I'm not planning on walking out on you. I'm in this now because I do believe you will get where you want to be, and I want to see it when you do.”
He smiles at her. Parker nearly recoils at the sincerity, and the show of compassion from her longtime friend. However, she smiles back after a moment of hesitation and continues her venture to the door, however and pulls it open, naturally swaying toward Logan before she exits.
"I think I damaged your lock. I'm sorry.”
"It's okay. I don't blame you for being angry. And at least now I know that when you are mad... I should stay out of your way.”
Aubrey laughs innocently and shakes her head. Just like that, her entire demeanor seems to have changed sans explanation.
"See you a little later.”
"Of course.”
Another odd, longing look-- and Parker pivots and exits the office. Logan then watches her leave, but once she's out of sight, his expression becomes a little concerned. The scene then fades to black.
