Note: This was originally going to be in Road to Hell #2, but I'm a stickler for ensuring I don't go over the word limit (even if it is just a guideline).
"You know what you said about doing something different?" Victoria posed the question as she browsed through an art gallery guidebook.
"You mean last week?" Keaton replied, his eyes watching the constant movements of the Seine.
"Kinda, but I guess I mean in general."
"How so?" Keaton enquired.
"Well I'm starting to think I need to do something different as well."
"Got any ideas on what it is?"
"Nothing concrete."
"Fair enough."
"But--" Victoria would've interrupted has Keaton not finished already. "--I think I'm beginning to get a grasp on what I should be doing."
"Do tell."
"Oh I forgot to give you this." Victoria retrieved a disposable cup of coffee from an eco-friendly bag.
"Cheers, but still."
"I nearly forgot about that, not like either of us would have wanted a cold cup of this."
"No." Keaton took a sip of the aromatic brew. "This would not have been anywhere near as good if it were cold."
"Exactly."
"So, as you were saying."
"Yeah." Victoria took a sip of her own drink and placed her guidebook into the bag. "I'm going to take a guess here and say that you're going to Athens fairly early this week."
"I will, but I thought you knew I was taking a flight out on Friday morning."
"You never mentioned it."
"I guess you're right." Keaton sighed. "I feel like I've been forgetting your importance recently."
"You've got a lot on your mind Keat."
"It's not an excuse."
"I know."
"But still--"
"--It doesn't matter." Victoria interjected. "I know you're not going on a sightseeing tour or anything."
"When did that matter?"
"It didn't, I'm just getting to the point."
"Fair enough." Keaton took another sip from his coffee.
"Well, correct me if I'm wrong here but you're looking to do something in the next few weeks."
"When am I not planning something?" Keaton smirked."
"You know what I mean, Shockwave was a big disappointment and this loss to Harris can't be doing you any favours."
"It's part of the sport."
"I know that well enough Keat, I also know how you've been favouring your left side since he beat you and how your breathing has been laboured compared to usual."
"Good assessment."
"Of course." Victoria smiled. "But what I was going to say is that your mind has been on something since I've seen you."
"I'm sure I've said that I'm putting in some extra time to figure out how to get better in APW."
"Your wording is interesting y'know."
"You think so?" Keaton seemed surprised.
"Yeah, I think you're beginning to see how important it is to be out of the ring as well as in it."
"That's one way of looking at it."
"I also think you're looking at doing something new."
"Pretty much, what's this got to do with your plans anyhow?"
"I'm going to do something new as well."
"And yet you prefaced that with an analysis of me?"
"I wouldn't say that was unusual."
"Hmm." Keaton paused and took another sip. "I guess you're right."
"So like I said, I'm thinking of doing something different."
"From what you've said, you will be doing something different."
"You're probably right." Victoria laughed. "I do sound a bit non-committal there."
"So go on, tell us."
"Well, you seem to be on a path that requires solitude."
"It doesn't require it, but it does help."
"I'm on the money at least."
"You are." Keaton nodded in response.
"And with everything you seem to have in your head, I think it's best that I do something that furthers my own cause rather than allowing myself to become some sort of sandbag on your journey."
"Sandbags aren't useless."
"I don't mean the actual object."
"Then what?"
"I meant a burden."
"You're not a burden, far from it."
"Keat, you know what I meant."
"I know, it's just great to act dumb." Keaton smirked and took a sip of coffee.
"Like I said, I want to pursue something that helps me whilst you're out there trying to find this golden spark."
"I see, you're going to stay here."
"I never said that."
"I'm not a deductive genius but I know enough to know you haven't been to that art gallery yet." Keaton pointed towards Victoria's bag.
"You're right, on both counts."
"in short, you're staying in Paris to do something different for yourself whilst I go and retrace my steps in order to learn something new."
"It's amazing how concise you can be sometimes."
"Comes with the territory."
"This will be good for both of us." Victoria stated.
"I never said it wouldn't be."
"Hmm."
"Seriously, I already knew that I'd have my hands full with trying to establish some sort of momentum going into this week." Keaton took a sip of coffee. "And besides, just because I'm up against two guys I've beaten before doesn't mean I have a chance to slack off for a moment."
"True."
"Like you said, it'll be good for both of us since at least one of us will become better from all this."
"You're that sure of yourself huh?"
"I was talking about you."
"Oh." Victoria smiled quickly. "There's still time on our side.
"As always." Keaton finished his coffee. "I might be about to go backwards to go forwards, but it doesn't mean I can't learn something new before then."
"Huh?"
"Art gallery, drink up and let's go."
"I didn't think you'd be up for it."
"You're joking, right?" Keaton chuckled. "Just like that place you've been looking at, we're both part of a new generation. that's what this is all about."
"I guess you're right."
"Time will tell."
New Generation
