"Happy Endings T.V."
Which fades away to a shot of two kids, a boy and a girl. They’re just sitting there, seemingly playing on the grass in some park. Their parents are no doubt nearby so they’re safe, don’t worry. We look a little closer and one (the girl) has one of those awesome ‘The Promise’ t-shirts (celebrating our World Heavyweight Champion) that just came on sale. The other kid (the snotty boy), he has a ‘Pro-Life, Pro-Callahan’ t-shirt on (last season’s because he’s still holding the belt in the picture). We get a little closer and we can eaves-drop on what they’re doing!
[Girl] So you shuffled, right?
[Boy] Yes. Have you?
[Girl] Ok, draw!
The kids reach down and come up with a pile of cards each. What is this? It’s the brand new APW Battle Card game! They all have the APW logo across the back and megastars and that on the front. Get excited! Each kid flips their top card. The boy has a Johnny Rebel card in front of him, the girl has a Phil Atken card.
[Girl] Oh no...
[Boy] Yes! I’m going to win this. Everyone knows that Atken is weak against electric wrestlers like Rebel. When was the last time you saw Atken win?
[Girl] At the last pay per view, actually. Oh! And last Asylum. But he’s funny and way more entertaining than Rebel. Rebel is just rude. Anyway, its your go.
[Boy] Ok. I use The Putdown. *Kid rolls a dice: Evens* Yes! Successful! That’s 40 damage, and you only have 10 left. Sucker. Atken is so weak!
[Girl] Maybe, but he’s better to watch. That’s why he has Comedic Value. I’m using that. *Girl rolls: Odds. Damn - I guess Atken has been more serious than funny these days anyway*[/b] Bummer. Ok, your turn again. [/color]
[Boy] You can’t beat Rebel with a basic megastar. He’s a veteran and has way more powerful moves. Like Chicago Crux...which I’m using! *Rolls again: Evens again*[/b] And that takes care of Atken. I told you, weak. [/color]
[Girl] He’s not. He’s just not experienced yet. The next set of cards will have a better version, you watch. Anyway, I draw...*Girl flips her top card: It’s Anthony Bailey! The boy nearly freaks out!*[/b] Yesss! Haha! Rebel is weak to high flying megastars. [/color]
[Boy] That’s unfair. He shouldn’t be weak to anyone.
[Girl] As if! He gets jealous whenever anyone is getting attention that he thinks he deserves. Anyway, you go. You have lots of work to do. This is the champion edition of Bailey and he’s got way more health because he won’t want to lose the belt.
The boy rubs his face, staring down at the cards in heightened concentration. He comes to a decision.
[Boy] I’m using F’n Put first. Maybe I can get you to change...
The boy goes to roll but before he can touch the card, a water card slams down onto the dice. [/color]
[Girl] Not so fast. I’m using Champion Charm. I’m going first, like a champion should! *The boy goes to protest, but accepts it with a clenched fist[/b] Ok, now I’m going for the big move: Word of Promise! *Girl rolls: Evens! Success!*[/b] It’s a hit! sixty damage! [/color]
[Boy] Ugh, that’s half his health! Ok, Chicago Crux...*Boy rolls: Evens. It’s a hit*[/b] Yes! You can’t beat a veteran that easily. The Bailey card is still pretty weak for a champion. [/color]
[Girl] That’s because it’s the first world champion edition. The second or third edition will be unstoppable. Anyway, that’s fifty health off, fifty left. *Girl throws down another water card*[/b] I’m going first again, and I’m using Word of Promise again. *Girl rolls: Evens again! Success!*[/b] Yes! Rebel has no more health. He might be a veteran, but it’s the speed and who can go first that is more important! [/color]
[Boy] Unfair. *The boy looks like he’s about to sulk, but instead just throws over his next card: Michael Callahan!*[/b] Ooo, Callahan. He’s actually pretty good for a non-champion card, don’t you think? [/color]
[Girl] I guess. Maybe they carried over some of his experience and boosts from the last set when he was a champion? Ok, new round...oh no! I’m out of water cards!
[Boy] Really!? Yes! My turn first. I’m using Political Influence. *Rolls: Evens*[/i][/b] Haha! Bailey can’t attack this turn. And now I’m using...hmm...if I use Victory Lock Bailey will still be alive. If I use Landslide Election, he won’t be able to attack your next opponent. What to do... [/color]
The boy rubs his chin, deep in thought. The tension builds. Silence. His eyes dart between the cards. The camera zooms in on him. He mutters to himself. A sweat bead drips off his nose. Eyes dart. Breathing quickens. A blink.
[Girl] Hurry up!
[Boy] Ok ok. Victory Lock! *Rolls again: Evens again!*[/i][/b] Yes! Bailey’s only got ten health now. One more hit... [/color]
[Girl] I’m swapping him out. I might be able to rest him and then bring him back better.
[Boy] Ok, put him over there and draw.
The girl shifts the shiny Bailey card over to the side, tilts him to show that he’s not active (as per the official APW rules) and then draws off the top card. Oh my gosh! It’s the super-rare Sally Talfourd card!
[Boy] Uh-oh...
[Girl] Yes!!! Sally is super effective against Callahan. He magic moves are way stronger than his wishy-washy water moves. She’s a powerful card too: High hitting moves, high health. It’s way more powerful than the last series. She’s evolved too. She’s one of the best cards in the series now.
[Boy] Ok ok. Calm down. Let me think. *The boy throws up a hand to put it all on hold*[/b] Ok, I’m using Political Influence first. *Shake...shake...shake...roll...odds*[/b] Damnit! [/color]
[Girl] Phew! And Callahan can’t attack because he used Landslide and that drains him. My turn! Ok, I’m using Happy Ending. *Shake...shake...shake...roll...evens!*[/b] Yes! 60 hit. Callahan’s only got 30 left. [/color]
[Boy] Ok, I’m using...
[Girl] No I’m using my Rasslemania Special.
[Boy] What!? You have one!?
[Girl] Yeah, ad it’s super-rare. I got one at an Asylum I went to.
[Boy] Let me see! *The boy snatches it out of the girl’s hands, then starts reading it out loud*[/b] “Rasslemania Special: If the megastar in play has won a match at Rasslemania then using this card allows them to go first for this round only.” *The boy looks up at the girl, jaw-dropped*[/b] That’s unfair! [/color]
[Girl] That’s the card. *She snatches it back*[/b] And because Sally has won at Rasslemania before - against Level-One, remember? - I get to go before you. And I’m using Charm first. *Girl rolls an...even! Successful!*[/b] Yes! Callahan can’t this round. He’s in love with Sally! He won’t hit her haha. [/color]
[Boy] ...but...
[Girl] And now I’m using Makeover. *Shake..rattle...roll: Evens! It’s a critical hit!*[/b] Yes! forty damage! And Callahan is out! [/color]
[Boy] That’s unfair. Callahan should beat Talfourd.
[Girl] It’s the experience thing. Her health is huge, her attacks are powerful, and pretty much all these special cards work on her because of all the things she’s done. Maybe the next edition of Callahan will be a bit better. Maybe if he could win a world title he’d be better?
[Boy] Whatever. I’ve still got one more. And that’s...
The boy flips his card and it’s none other than the Shane Borderland card. The girl stares at it, then squints to get a better look.
[Girl] Has he got three attack moves?
[Boy] Yep! He’s a new card for this series.
[Girl] He was in the last series, wasn’t he?
[Boy] No, he wasn’t. He was in two series before. But they left him out of the last one.
[Girl] Well, that must mean that so many people have forgotten how to use him. And his health is pretty low and his hits don’t seem to be that powerful. And he probably won’t work well with the other cards from last series, right?
[Boy] No, not really. But he’s powerful enough. Three attack moves, and one is a pre-move. So I guess that makes up for it. It’s my turn, isn’t it?
[Girl] Ummm...yes.
[Boy] Ok, I’m using Sneak Attack first. *Rolls: Evens*[/i][/b] Thirty hit. That means Sally’s got thirty health left, right? [/color]
[Girl] Right. Anyway, I’m using Charm before you. *Rolls: Odds. It’s unsuccessful*[/i][/b] Oh man! If you hit... [/color]
[Boy] Then Sally’s a goner! And you’ve only got Bailey after this an he’s weakened too! I can’t lose!
The boy reaches for the dice. He takes them up. Shakes them. Is about to let go...when...
[Woman] Mark! We’re going now!
The boy looks up to where that voice just came from. It must be his mother! He looks down to the cards, then at his hand with the dice, then at the cards again. Of course, now we know his name.
[Mark] Just a minute!
[Woman] No! Now! We’ve got to...
And no one is listening, as is normal with mothers. The boy’s shoudler slump. He places the dice into the girl’s hand.
[Mark] You’re lucky.
The girl beams a smile at the boy as she takes the dice, then starts to stack her cards again.
[Girl] Sometimes all you need is luck.
The girl lets out a bit of a giggle as the boy rushes to get all his things together. As he stands up and brushes his pants off from all the grass and dust that’s on it, he check around him to see that he hasn’t dropped anything.
[Mark] Ok, well, I’ll see you later? Maybe we could finish this Sunday? Mum is bringing me back here...
[Girl] Ok. I’ll be right here waiting!
[Mark] Ok. See you then Grace.
And off goes the boy. He runs away to catch up to his mother, leaving Grace to trot off herself. As both kids go their separate ways, suddenly someone comes bursting into scene, all a huff-and puff as they try and get their breath back. Shane, behind the camera as always, takes a step back and we find it’s none other than Sally Talfourd!
[Sally] Sorry I’m late! Oh man, getting a taxi here is crazy! My Filipino isn’t as good as it used to be. Are you ready to start?
[Shane] Yep, give me a second.
Shane shuffles the camera around, then gives the signal to Sally. She takes a breath to start speaking and then...the scene cuts out. After a moment more on the blank screen, there’s a slow fade out and then into...
