A split second. That’s how long it takes for catastrophe to happen. That’s how long you have to decide to do the right thing, a split second. Last week, the APW Undisputed Champion made the right decision when he prevented C.J. Gates from getting his head destroyed by a raging Kurt Noble. But he wasn’t alone. There was another presence there, another figure to help. A man who has become something of a ghost to Marvin, haunting his every step, haunting his mind, living in his nightmares.
However Ghosts are figments of your imagination, mere ghost stories. Biggs is very VERY real! Biggs is a threat to everything Marvin has accomplished since his return to APW. He is the only person Marvin has been completely and utterly unsuccessful against. He is more than just a thorn in Terry’s side, he’s more than the chip on his shoulder. A victory over Biggs is the Loch Ness Monster of Marvin’s career, the mythical creature you know in your gut exists but always escapes your grasps by seconds! It becomes more than just a goal, it becomes an obsession.
For the past 9 months, Marvin has been a new man, a changed man, a BETTER man. But this isn’t a first time. Here’s a story about a man who came blazing into a new company with guns blazing. He was the runner up at Survive and Conquer. He had a massive match at Rasslemania. He was the NEXT BIG THING in APW! But then it all came crashing to the ground. Greatness was in his grasp and it all faded away like smoke in the wind, running through his fingers like water. He struggled to hold on for dear life but it was gone. Just like that, everything came crumbling down, and it took 8 long months before he was ready to give it another go.
We’re talking of course, about our Undisputed Champion. And the man who pulled the rug out from under him, who yanked away the football at the very last second…. Biggs! So imagine what Terry is going through staring down at the barrel of the same gun that sent his career in a tailspin. But this time, things are different, stakes are different. This time he has EVERYTHING to lose, and will do anything to make sure his legacy stays secured. And that makes HIM a very dangerous man!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
The streets of Yokohama Japan are crowded as possible. Terry Marvin makes his way through the overrun streets hand and hand with his wife Faythe. They’re smiling and laughing as they break through the crowd and back to their hotel. He wraps his arms around her as the snuggle up together, no doubt heading up for a night of pure romance. As they pass the lobby, however, one figure catches their attention as they stop dead in their tracks.
AMY NOBLE!
Faythe rolls her eyes and looks up at Terry extremely annoyed. Terry lets out a sigh and then leans into Faythe whispering in her ear.
”This will only take a minute, I promise. Go ahead and head up….I’ll fetch a bottle of champagne and meet you up there.”
Faythe nods reluctantly and pulls Terry in for one hell of a Kiss. Not one of those “I’ll see you soon” smooches either. It was more one of those… I know this bitch is watching and in case she gets any ideas I’ll be marking my territory….kisses.
She then heads towards the elevators, passing Amy along the way and throwing her a look that should have left her a pile of melted goo on the floor. Amy shakes her head with a stiff smile and looks at Terry.
”She doesn’t look too happy to see me.”
”Can you blame her? You’re kinda interrupting. What the hell are you even doing here?”
”Kurt’s here, and this is where I’m going to be whether he wants me to be or not. But right now, I’m here to see you.”
Terry seems rather impatient.
”What do you want?”
”What was that all about last week? That stupid intervention of yours? I thought you were done with the mind games.”
Terry sighs and shakes his head.
”Oh and see here, I thought you were trying to check up on me after you’re psycho husband tried to end my life a couple weeks ago. Both Faythe and I are fine by the way.”
This seems like it stings Amy a bit, but he doesn’t left off.
”That intervention, just like most things I’ve done recently, was for you! You still have this insane mindset that Kurt is STILL your Kurt. And I was there to prove to you and everyone else that he’s 100% gone!”
”By Running him down and insulting him? Leading him into a trap?”
Terry angers.
”A TRAP? You mean the same trap where he comes out and tries to END two wrestlers’ careers? You mean the trap where once again I had to save another human being from Kurt Nobles tirade?”
”As if you weren’t just USING that to further your own agenda. Just like you USED me to win that title!”
Terry lost it!
”FUCK YOU!”
Amy Recoils in surprise.
”I’ve been carrying around the blame for what happened to Kurt since Shockwave and rightfully so. But let’s get one thing straight here. YOU CAME TO ME! You came for my help! You approached me about Shockwave, and I gave you the solution. I’ve saved your ass on MORE than one occasion now, and I’ve always been here for you no matter what! And all you’ve done is berate me and talk down to me throughout it all. Who’s using who here?”
Terry walks strait past her, not paying her another glance until she grabs his shoulder.
”I’m sorry, I’m just on edge.”
Terry sighs again.
”I know… but it’s time to let Kurt go! And I can’t be a part of it anymore. I’ve got my stuff to worry about. Hell, I got Biggs this week!”
Amy nods knowingly.
”Be Careful!”
This kinda takes Terry by surprise.
”Biggs is cunning and he knows how to take advantage of people. He tried it on me. If he thinks he can get an edge in the elimination chamber… He’ll take it.”
Terry knew all of this already, but he smiles politely anyways before continuing on to the elevator, turning one last time.
”Go home Amy. Get your life in order….one that doesn’t involve Kurt Noble. I’m not telling you this for any kind of advantage….I’m telling you as a Friend. I know what Kurt can do. I’ve felt what Kurt can do. It’s over.”
Tears well up in her eyes. Terry can see that she knows this is the truth, but fails to accept it. Terry gives one last sigh before stepping in the elevator.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
We see “The Real Show” Terry Marvin stands on the water’s edge in the foreground of a huge lit up Amusement Park with a large round almost Farris Wheel looking object with a clock on it. He smiles at the camera.
”This is a beautiful country isn’t it? Japan, the magical land… something out of the stories and legends, majestic even. But it wasn’t always like this was it? Let’s go back in time about 70 years ago. This country was destroyed by the destructive power of an atomic bomb. It was decimated, with no hope of returning to its past glory, no hope of ever being great.”
Terry shakes his head with almost a tear in his eyes as he speaks.
”I know how it feels. I know how to have everything at my fingertips, to have the brightest future imaginable only to have it snatched away from me in one millisecond! It crumbled me! Did more damage than visible to the naked eye, shaking my very foundation. I was in shambles with no idea what the future held. Every moment after that was a struggle just to wake up in the morning. My focus was shot, and my career shot down to the lowest level of hell. For all intents and purposes, my time in APW was over. Biggs was my atomic bomb! ”
Terry lets out a sigh.
”When Biggs STOLE that Overdrive title out of my grasp after I’ve left EVERYTHING I had in the middle of the ring, I lost it. I lost everything. All the work I’d done up to that point. All the accomplishments I’d completed turned to nothing. Everything I was died that day! I was ruined!”
Terry sits down on the edge of the water and looks out as the glow from the lights behind him dance on the smooth, glass like surface.
”But just like this illustrious country, it was not the end, only a minor setback. I rebuilt, I came back stronger and better and become the GREATEST THING TO EVERY HAPPEN TO WRESTLING! I accomplished more in the span of 9 months than that piece of shit Biggs has in his entire career. Yet, once again I’m staring down at the apocalypse. Once again I’m head on against the man who ended it all last year….My Loch Ness Monster, my unclimbable wall, my biggest obstacle.”
”So of course all of those feelings of the past escalate again. But this time things will be different, because I’m different. Let’s compare the last year or so Between Biggs and I shall we? We all know how my year went! I came running back into APW with my head held high. My first match back, I defeated a legend. After Survive and Conquer, I won the Overdrive championship, then Test for the Best, then the Undisputed title and I haven’t looked back since.
Old Biggs over there lost his title at last years Shockwave against a little whelp like C.J. Gates. Then he spent the next few months doing everything possible to reclaim it. But he just wasn’t good enough was it? He’d lost a step, lost that winning edge. He let Gates get inside his head. Those matches were over well before they began. And then just like that, Biggs was done. CJ Gates effectively ended his career!
Oh how the mighty fell then! Biggs resorted to becoming a second rate manager for a semi successful Tag Team. But he missed it. He craved it. I know what it’s like. I know how to miss the sport I love so much that it aches with every single fiber in my being. Wrestling is like a drug and you need your fix! So he decided to make a comeback against who else but C.J. Gates! But we all know how this story is played out don’t we Biggs? Your heart wasn’t in it, and you failed once again. It is simply a case of one man having another’s Number. ”
Terry smiles slyly.
”I know what you’re thinking Biggs. You’re in the frame of mind that you have MY NUMBER, that I’m you’re BITCH! It’s easy to see how you would have diluted yourself enough to think that. After all, you have hit your head pretty hard recently haven’t you? Unfortunately for you and you’re illogical way of thinking, I’m not nearly the man I was a year and a half ago Biggs! I am a calculating opportunist that will stop at nothing to hold my hands up victorious! You remember that feeling don’t you Biggs? You remember what it was like to go to every length to get the job done. However, you’re not that guy anymore are you?
No, see, I’m not the only one that has changed am I Biggs? You have fallen FAR my friend. You’re lost! You lost your wife because you didn’t know when to put her above your failed career. You made the WRONG choice Biggs, and now you’re strutting around pretending that it made you better, that you’re BACK? But I can see into your soul Biggs. You’ve permanently lost that little step, permanently dropped the edge from your swagger unable to get it back. You’re simply holding on to the last grasps of your obliterated career. ”
Terry sighs again and shakes his head.
”I feel for you Biggs, I really do. Because I was there….I was pathetically lying to myself as well, pretending that nothing was wrong, that I was up to snuff. However, I wasn’t a daft fool that pushed away every single person who’d ever loved me, and had a support system to tell me when enough was enough! I guess I’ll have to be that guy today Biggs. I’ll have to be the hero once again and be the man to give you the hard news face to face.
IT IS OVER BIGGS!
It is sad to see the man who once OWNED APW, the man who could DO NO WRONG, as a cheap imitation of himself. It’s like I’m watching a bad movie and saying to myself “is it over yet, it has to end soon right?” But it never ends. The characters get stale, the plot gets repeated, but it never ends. So you’re forced to look away from the slow motion train wreck that’s happening right in front of you. Tell me Biggs, when does this end? When will you put the audience out of their misery?”
Terry tosses a rock into the water as it skips along to smooth exterior into the night. A half smile creeps on his face.
”Do you have any idea what this match means to me Biggs? This is my one chance at redemption. Every goal I’ve set for myself this year has come true. Every obstacle in my way has been shattered. But you’re always in the back of my mind as the one guy who never stared up at the lights while my hands are raised victoriously in the air. That fact alone makes me sick! It disgusts me to no end, because I know in my heart of hearts that I’m BETTER than you Biggs!
This match tomorrow night, that will be my proof and all the evidence that I need. You had better believe that I will stop at NOTHING to be victorious Biggs. I don’t care if it costs you your career! I don’t care if these fans riot on me. There is nothing more important than finally getting one up on you, because a victory tomorrow paves the way for a victory at One Night In Hell! Once I put you on your ass, there will be nobody to stop me, nobody I haven’t beaten. I will ride the wave of momentum right into the Elimination Chamber, right into DESTINY!”
Terry’s smile drops as his facial expression gets serious, almost angry.
”And you’re not going to stop be Biggs, I promise you that. Other people have tried to stop me from accomplishing my goals… Kurt Noble tried, and I ruined his entire life. Just keep that in mind while you walk into this match with your lavish plans. I’ve seen you lately Biggs, trying to pass off all the GREAT deeds I did as nothing when the truth of the matter is I have become the worshiped hero of APW that you wished you were. I see you now, pretending to have Gates’ back, pretending to give a shit about Amy Noble!
But you haven’t changed, not one single bit. You’re simply an unoriginal copycat trying to ride the waves of my success. But I can see through your shallow façade Biggs, right through to the black mass that lives where your soul used to be. You don’t’ care about ANYBODY except yourself and winning this title. Well, here’s a newsflash cowboy, neither do I. I will defend this title with my last breath and rip apart any man who tries to take it from me. It’s the only thing in this world that means more to me than life itself. But the difference between the two of us is that I have the BALLS to admit it to the world.
Your attempts at heroism are downright laughable. Even last week when you grabbed the other side of that chair to save Gates, I saw the look in your eyes. It was a look of sheer shock and surprise that you had the backbone to think about another human being for even a second. You were in unfamiliar territory Biggs…because you were pretending. Everything is just one big giant act with you Biggs. Unfortunately, you can’t act like a champion without the belt around your waist, and tomorrow night you won’t be able to act like a winner with your face buried in the mat screaming for the pain to end!”
Terry grows more and more intense.
”There’s FEAR in your eyes Biggs. Fear because for the first time in our illustrious history, you’re entering this match with no clue how you’re going to beat me. You’ve come to the realization that you’re DEEP in over your head, and you’re scared that I’m going to take it to the next level leaving you as a pile of worthless goo painting the canvas. And you have reason to be afraid Biggs, good reason to be afraid. You felt the shift last week in our match, felt that you couldn’t put me away no matter what, no matter what tricks you pulled. It was an unfamiliar and uneasy feeling to you wasn’t it Biggs. It had you scared, had you panicked.
And what had you reeling most of all was when that referee’s hand struck mat for the third time, you thought you’d lost. I heard the painful cry come out of your mouth. I heard that sigh of defeat in your voice. You were resigned to your loss. And I looked across that ring when the referee announced the split decision and the shock on your face. YOU knew the truth Biggs. YOU knew that your shoulders were glued to the mat. You knew that I had FINALLY got the upper hand on you. Well congratulations on slipping out of another embarrassing situation because of the incompetence of others!
That match may have been a draw, but you were beat Biggs. You were decimated! And for the first time in your career, that little thought seaped into your brain. “I’m not better than Terry Marvin!” And I know Biggs, I know how that thought can fester over the course of a week. It’s been eating at you, it’s been drilling into that brain of yours, forcing you to lose sleep, to doubt yourself. And now you have to go out there, somehow mustering up the confidence to fool yourself into believing that you have a chance, because you can’t let everyone else see the truth can you?
But not me Biggs, I know what happened last week. I know that I was the better man. I know where my shoulders were. And all week I’ve been living with the knowledge that I am the better man, and dealing with the disappointment that nobody else in the world knows it. But that just makes it so much better doesn’t it? Cause now, I can do it on my terms…one on one with no possible chance for excuses. When you lose to me this week Biggs, you will know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the BETTER MAN walked out of there a winner.”
Terry smiles once more.
”You’ve already lost, you’re just too stupid and caught up in yourself to admit it. You see Biggs, I will not make your mistakes and repeat your failures. I will not be a fluke champion who turns it over at first turn. And I will not let myself be thwarted by my biggest rival, by a man who some say that I just cannot beat. You let CJ Gates own you for the better part of a year. You let him define who you are. He’s become your nightmare…
This week I wake up from my destitute dreams and look ahead to the reality of the situation. Biggs, you are one of the most respected members of the APW locker room. You’ve had a great career. I know in the bottom of my heart that you WANT this victory so bad you can taste it. You want to prove that you have what it takes to become the Undisputed Champion once again. You want to prove that the last year or so has been just an illusion, that BIGGS IS BACK!
And that means you’re going to come at me with your heart on your sleeve and your pride on the line. You won’t stop until that final bell rings. And I’m glad for that Biggs. Nothing would make me happier. You see, when the final bell rings and you’re flat on your ass contemplating the meaning of the word inadequate, I’ll know that I’m victorious over the BIGGS of old, over the best you have to offer. And the world will know that God’s Gift to Wrestling has once again delivered!”
Terry turns and stares at the lights of the amusement park.
”Tomorrow Night, Biggs gets to see the Autumn of Awesome up close and personal.
I will defeat Biggs in that very ring.
I will escape from the black cloud of Rasslemania 7 that looms over my head to this very day.
I will no longer be held back by fears and the age old question of “What If”
I will conquer my final demon
I will catch my own personal Loch Ness Monster. ”
He turns and smiles one last time.
”Just like Japan, my return from disaster will be complete. Just like Japan, my redemption will be realized. Just like Japan, I will REVOLUTIONIZE THE FUTURE! And here in this majestic City, one idea, one phrase, one silly little thought will carry more meaning than it has in the my last 9 months of pure dominance when the fans stare down at the fully vindicated Undisputed Champion, the NEW Terry Marvin and realize one pure undisputed truth……
IT’S SHOWTIME!”
With that, Marvin turns and walks into the blur of the light as the scene fades out!
