Which fades away to a shot of the indomitable team of Sally Talfourd and Anthony Bailey. Wow! Has there ever been a better team of skill and perfection? I guess we’ll find out at Asylum, but for now let’s say that no. No, there’s never been a better team of skill and perfection. And we’re not talking about looks here: Skills and marts and ... ok, looks too. We can talk about looks. They look all sweaty, dressed down in training clothes, sitting on the mat of a ring, and out of breath.
[Sally] That was good work.
[Anthony] You think Callahan and Rebel have been training?
[Sally] Of course not. I doubt they can even stay in the same room long enough to find out each other’s name. Rebel is so egotistical that he couldn’t possibly think that someone who started in APW this year has anything at all to teach the hundred-year veteran.
[Anthony] Come now, don’t make fun of the elderly.
[[Sally] I’m serious! Have you seen how he moves in the ring? It might as well be one of those aquatic centers where you get all the old people moving like snails through the water . You and me? We’re those people swimming laps alongside them. Focused, determined, and not out of breath because we woke up this morning! Rebel has been in this business for so long that you can bank on him. You can expect him. And you can expect him to do two things. One: Try and dominate a match. Two: Not listen to his partner. The fact is that the reason he had to break up with Level-One was because he couldn’t even work with him: One of the best in the business. It wasn’t that he wanted to break out on his own. No no no, don’t you listen to that. It’s because he couldn’t work with a partner for an hour a show.
[Anthony] Too bad he’s got to do it this week. And with someone not exactly of Level-One’s calibre. I mean, Callahan isn’t too bad. But he’s no Level-One. And if all the success of Rebel and Level-One’s team came from that future hall of famer, I can’t see either one being able to carry the other through this match. And, listen to their own word: Rebel has come out and said that he has no faith in Callahan. He’s all but said he hates him. How can Callahan come out and wrestle with this guy? I would have thought that Callahan was good enough to get some more respect from his partner.
Sally nods in agreement, taking up her drink bottle and taking a gulp. She offers it to Anthony, who politely refuses. Who can blame him: Cooties outbreaks are on the rise, so I hear.
[Sally] You’re exactly right. Callahan is good, let’s give him credit. But is he good enough to cover up his own weaknesses and his partner’s - of which there are many weaknesses? Of course he isn’t. He’s only just ... just good enough to beat me. And Rebel? He’s only just good enough to beat you. But together, they aren’t good enough to beat us. And it’s not exactly easy to wrestle from up on a horse.
[Anthony] Mhmm. Callahan does have that ‘lofty’ problem.
[Sally] You’ve got that right. It would take a monumental effort for Callahan to come down to earth with us mere mortal wrestlers who have to earn a place in the record books. I mean, I’m sure he already had a place reserved for him before he even came into the business, he’s just that good. But something that might knock him off his perch: He’s hopeless in tag team matches and matches where he has to work with someone and against the many. Hopeless. He’s hardly beat me in a match like that, and even when he has it’s because he’s been chased out of the ring like a coward. It’s a fact that when Callahan is staring at a risky match where he might lose he does everything in his power to make sure he doesn’t have to. He will lie to his opponent, he will cheat his way to a win, he will flee a match as fast as he can and do anything he can to make sure he doesn’t have to be there when he loses.
The fact remains that Michael Callahan might think he’s higher than all of us in the business that we all love, but the truth is that he’s one of the lowest of the lows we have. No morals. No ethics. No integrity. There’s nothing admirable about Michael Callahan, and the fans are right to reject him completely. And I’m sure that he’ll be joined in those a-moral depths with his partner, Rebel. The man who runs by a slogan that gives you no room for argument. A man who’s tag line wants you to think he’s telling the truth each and every time. The fact remains that he’s never had the chance to step into the ring against either of us in a match like this. Yeah, he might have pulled out a win against you in a half-cooked match ...
[Anthony] I don’t think it was half-cooked ...
[Sally] ... shhh, it was half cooked. It was a scam of a match! Everyone knows it. You were injured ... and hurt in the match! Oh, and I’m sure you’d actually wrestled two or three matches that night as well. Simply f’n put.
[Anthony] Now I know that’s not true.
[Sally] Why? How? I said simply f’n put. That makes it true! The same way Rebel said he’s going to beat us: Simply f’n put. The same way he said that he and I would make a better team than you and I. Simply f’n put. The same way he said the result of this match doesn’t matter. Simply f’n put. All I have to say is simply f’n put and it’s true. Just listen to the years of Rebel on the record and he’ll stand by everything he’s ever said: Despite the proof of the record that he’s never been a world champion, never been a number one headliner, never been a person that the fans respect.
[Anthony] Actually ... you’re right. There’s no world champion on the other side.
[Sally] And there’s two on this side. What does that say about the skill and achievement here in our team? It says we’re better than 90% of the people out there - including those two that we’re against. Those two that have never been good enough to get a world title in their hands. Rebel came close ... Callahan came close ... we’ve come close enough to get it. We’ve been the top names in the company, the top wrestlers in the ring, the top champions that APW does have. You and I have done it before. Let’s no forget that you’re the champion going into the chamber.
Sally pats Anthony on the shoulder right next to her. He nods a solemn nod here.
[Anthony] It does seem to be a forgotten fact here. I mean, it’s not a fluke I have this title. I earned it, I retained it, and I’m taking it into the chamber match. I would have thought I would get a bit more respect here.
[Sally] Oh Anthony. Rebel and Callahan don’t respect people like us. I went through it the first time, but the names were different. Level-One, Ryan Ruckus, BDC - they were the people who were disrespecting me. This time around? You’ve got the likes of Rebel and Callahan. Ok, they’re not even nearly the same sort of calibre, but they’re doing the same thing as them. They run you down, they say you’re worthless, and they say they’ll win. And if they get to you, they will. But this week, we show them that they’re not getting to us and that they never will. This week we show them that all their words are nothing compared to all our actions. This week we show them what two bonafied world champions can do against two bonafied pretenders. They want to talk about us as if we’re nothing; the fact remains that us two “nothings” have been higher in this company than they have been and - if everything goes to plan - ever will be come the close of the chamber match.
If everything goes to plan? Have these two sorted out their differences? Have they formed their alliance? We know that Sally’s heard Rebel’s scheming last week; maybe that inspired her to come to the only person she could trust?
[Anthony] What about Atken? What’s his part in all this?
[Sally] Atken’s had the two best weeks of his life. He won quickest last week and comes in last at the pay per view. And now he doesn’t have to wrestle a match this week. He will be the fittest and the freshest in our title match. If he’s smart, he will not get involved in this match of ours, make sure he’s fittest and freshest, and walk out with the biggest smile of the five of us. Atken is a danger to us, but in this match? No, he’s not a danger. He won’t be able to screw the match given how good we’re going to be. There’s not going to be a chance for him to fast-count us. There’s not going to be a chance for him to say one of us tapped. There’s not going to be a chance for him to count us out. No, we’re not getting pinned, we’re not getting tied up, and we’re not leaving the ring until we’ve got the 1-2-3.
[Anthony] Seems like something we can agree on. Atken is dangerous at the pay per view, but he’s not dangerous this week. Though he should be worried about our opponents.
[Sally] Why?
[Anthony] Because they know the same as us, and they will be thinking that taking him out might be a good thing.
[Sally] So ... we really are the good people! We want to save and protect poor little Atken who finds himself in a big pond now. I know he must be scared, but we’ll look out for him. He’s our little brother!
Anthony chuckles a little, Sally beams an amused smile. There’s a nice little pause, where it would be good to fade out, but then ...
[Anthony] Sally?
[Sally] Anthony?
[Anthony] About Shockwave ...
[Sally] Week-by-week Bailey. Let’s win this week, finish the pay per view, and then sort it out.
And that’s where we come to an end. These two champions: One past, one present. And now they team up to take on two of the worst in APW. And it’s all being decided by a man in the middle who finds himself in a place that he’s not been before. It’s all making for one heck of a formula. After a moment more on the blank screen, there’s a slow fade out and then into...
