Which fades away to a shot of the world renowned (at least in the state of Lexington, Kentucky) Rupp Arena. It’s looking all ready to go - APW Asylum banners, crowds mingling in front, and an atmosphere of excitement, anticipation, and over-priced food and beverages. That’s what you come to the wrestling for, isn’t it? Anyway, the camera fades away, and then comes in with a shot of Sally Talfourd, sitting in her locker room put aside for her within that same arena. She’s looking all spiff and span, ready to go out and put on the show of the night! Shane, with his ever inquisitive camera, noodles his way on over.
[Shane] Not long now.
[Sally] Nope. We’re ready to get this thing rolling. New champion means new Asylum. It’s time for a new era here, and I promise I won’t disappoint.
[Shane] How have you pulled up after the elimination chamber? Anything going to be holding you back this week?
[Sally] I won’t lie, Shane. The body is a bit sore still. It’s not so easy to recover from a match like that. The wrestling alone is tougher. Then you factor in the match ... and then the weapons? Well, Shane, all I can say is that I’ve got myself into as good a shape as I could. If it’s good enough, then I’ll win. If it’s not, then I won’t.
[Shane] Seems simple enough.
[Sally] Doesn’t it always?
[Shane] What’s that meant to mean?
Sally looks up from lacing her boots (the activity that’s been keeping her occupied through the conversation) with a thought and a sigh. Not some annoyed and exasperated sigh, more of a reflective and somber sigh. It helps to be in touch with the different types of sighs of the world.
[Sally] I mean, it’s all easy in planning. On paper. You know, when it’s all being worked out in here ... *Sally taps her head*[/b] ... it’s easy. We all like to think we’re masters of this sport and that we can prepare ourselves for anything. But things go wrong every now and then. So, yeah, while it always seems simple enough, it doesn’t always mean its simple.
Like, think about this match with Julius. If I’m treating it simple, I’m going in thinking I’m the better of the two. I’m going in thinking I’m the superior athlete. I’m going in thinking that because I’m the world champion here, I’ve just got something that he doesn’t have. [/color]
[Shane] But?
[Sally] But is exactly right. There’s a whole lot of unknowns when it comes to facing someone like Julius. He’s got a title that’s, you know, not on my one’s level ... but he still had to earn it. It still takes work and effort and focus and skill and ... a lot to get it. And he’s no blow-in, he’s a veteran of the ring as much as I am. And let’s face it, he’s got a natural upper hand, as most men do in a match against me. So I don’t treat it as simple. I know not to treat it as simple. The experiences I’ve had over the past, what? Nearly three years? They’ve taught me that nothing is simple and that, when it comes to a match, anything can happen.
Sally goes back to lacing her boots, thinking about all those times where things didn’t exactly go as planned. Losing to Callahan at Shockwave ... losing the final match at Test for the Best ... losing at Survive and Conquer ... and that’s just this year! Yes, Sally has learned a lot from all of this and, frankly, she’s not leaving anything to chance.
[Sally] Shane, did you get the preparations ready for next week?
[Shane] I did. I got the ...
[Sally] Shhh!!!
Sally looks at Shane with the urgency of ... well, I don’t know, but it’s urgent as heck! She puts a finger to her lips, then shakes her head all disappointed-like. Turning back to her boots (wow, they take a long time to lace!)...
[Sally] Let’s not ruin the surprise too early, Shane. My contender for the belt ... I don’t want them, you know, getting ahead of things. Let’s keep it a surprise for a while. I just needed to know that you did what I needed you to do. And you did, so I know what needed doing did in fact get done and so done it did get indeed!
[Shane] Ummm, what? Yes? I don’t ...
[Sally] Just agree, Shane!
[Shane] I agree.
[Sally] Good. Now, next week, we’ll have to get in nice and early to get everything set up. But let’s worry about that down the track. Tonight, I’m going to go down and make sure we ring in this new era on Asylum with the appropriate fanfare and excitement! The fans deserve to celebrate, and I want to give them their celebration. I’ve already given them the reason to celebrate, so I might as well throw them the party. It’s been a long time since they had a reason to celebrate like this too. I mean, sure, they were happy when my friend AB won and retained, but nothing gets a crowd more excited than seeing Sally Talfourd walk down to the ring with a belt over her shoulder.
And then, the encore to it all: A win over Julius. That’s the surprise that’s going to burst out of the cake, so to speak. It’s time to show them just what this champion intends to do, and that’s change Asylum for the better. You see, along with celebrating tonight, I’m going to lay out a plan. My plan. My plan for making Asylum all the better. I think Asylum is good, but it can be great. And I want to help make it great. I want to be here, at the head of this show, and help us to become the premiere brand here at APW. I want to put an idea out there that Asylum is ready to take APW to a new, bigger, better level. And it starts by beating one of our own. It starts by beating Julius Farquhar.
[Shane] Beating one of your own?
[Sally] Yes, I guess that’s what it looks like to you. But to me, it’s the important first step: Raising the bar. Making Asylum more competitive than ever before. Making sure that when people come to APW that Asylum, searching for the competition, that it’s found on Asylum. How better to showcase this than have a tough-hard-fought, seriously skilled match between two champions right off the bat? Action Packed Wrestling needs to start living up to its name each and every week and each and every match. There shouldn’t be one match that leaves people wanting. This week, this first week, I’m going to go out there and set the standard that every Asylum wrestler needs to aim for. They might not get there, but they need to be aiming for it. And if they don’t ... if they refuse to get better ... than it’s up to the people who believe me to do the same.
[Shane] Aren’t you threatening the whole roster, essentially?
[Sally] Not threatening, just ... motivating. Asylum is going to start moving forward. You can either get on or get out of the way. Don’t stand in the way, because there’s enough of us here who want to see Asylum get bigger and better that we’ll move you. I might not agree with everyone here, I might not see eye-to-eye with everyone here, but anyone who wants to see Asylum get bigger and better ... then I’m willing to work with them. I don’t care if they are good or bad, face or heel, champion or not. I just want to start putting together a team that is ready to take the fight to apathy, to mainstream, and to OverDrive.
[Shane] To OverDrive?
Sally looks up with a smile. She knows she has caught he attention of the wrestling world with all that. Yes, making Asylum better could be done without going after OverDrive. But why not do it the bigger and better way itself?
[Sally] Yes, OverDrive. I have a plan, which everyone will hear about at Asylum. And I welcome everyone to tune in and hear it out. And I will make sure that everyone knows it by the end of the show. But, for now, Julius Farquhar is going to be the man that I use as a way of making my point even louder and stronger and pointed. There’s not going to be a question left in anyone’s mind what’s going to happen, and people are going to start choosing sides. It’s time Asylum gets together on the same page, gets itself the recognition it truly deserves.
So, Julius, when I’m wrestling you, make sure that you realize you are part of a bigger message. That you are an exclamation point to a sentence that needs to be said louder still. You can expect a whole lot of fallout from that, too. A harder match. A tougher match. A match that I’m not willing to ceed to you or anyone just to show everyone where the bar needs to be set for Asylum. We have the best talent here. We can put on the best matches. And you and I? We’re going to prove that. We’re going to prove that Asylum is nigh unmatchable in what we have to offer.
This match of ours, it’s the first step. The first in a whole line that’s taking us to ... well ... it’s taking us to the end. I know where that end is, I know what needs to happen and how. I’m going to lead it, belt or no. But I expect this belt to be around my waist for a long time. And that will give me the chance to get everyone on board. That starts this week, like I said. The world champion against the Tap Out champion. Two of the bets in the business. That’s what every match should be like. It should be as if two of the biggest and best champions are going at it, whether they are or not. The fact that we are just gives us the bigger stage to make our point.
Sally finishes up her speech with a nod. She jumps up, showing off her outfit, a dazzle of colours and sparkles. It’s time to impress and amaze the wrestling world. In just a few moments she’s going to be in the ring, revealing to the world exactly what she’s got planned for APW and for Asylum. What is she thinking? What is she planning? The people will want to know, and soon, they will. After a moment more on Sally, who starts to head out the room, there’s a slow fade out and then into...
