"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them." – John Fitzgerald Kennedy
{{The scene opens to the Veterans Day Weekend celebration at Castillo de San Marcos. The Castillo de San Marcos is located on Avenida Menendez and overlooks Matanzas Bay in historic St. Augustine, FL. In honor of the soldiers who have served in the US military, the city is offering free admission to the Castillo de San Marcos, which was constructed by the Spanish military between 1672 and 1692. The Castillo de San Marcos is the oldest masonry fortification in the entire United States. Anthony and his girlfriend Tasha have decided to join the annual festivities along with many other men, women, and children. Anthony is wearing a red, white, and blue hoodie that says “Thank You Veterans” across the chest, blue jeans, and plain white Nike sneakers. Tasha is wearing a pink hoodie, black jeans, and a pair of pink, black, and white Nike sneakers. The individuals who recognized Bailey whenever he was out and about through town always made a big deal of his presence but he never seemed to mind.}}
Young Boy: Look mom!! Look who it is!
{{A little red haired boy with freckles eagerly tugs on his mother’s sleeve as she laughs.}}
Boy’s Mother: Who is it dear?
Young Boy: It’s Anthony Bailey! He’s an APW megastar and he’s like the bestest wrestler ever.
{{Bailey, Tasha, and the boy’s mother all laugh simultaneously.}}
Anthony Bailey: The best eh? I am flattered but that’s a pretty big statement young man. You don’t think it’s too massive to say something like that?
{{The question rolls so smoothly off of Bailey’s lips.}}
Young Boy: But you are the bestest! The bestest ever!!
Tasha: Aww, that’s so sweet of you. If you could get anything from the “bestest” wrestler ever, then what would it be?
Young Boy: Ummm…
{{The young boy begins to ponder for a moment.}}
Could you promise to beat up all the bad guys just like my dad?
{{Bailey looks slightly confused at the boy’s request but his mother quickly intervenes.}}
Boy’s Mother: My husband died overseas in Iraq back in 2005 while I was still pregnant with Kevin. That’s what brings us out here each year. To celebrate his life and the lives of all the other veterans.
Bailey was not ready for such a weighty response and was taken back by it. Traveling the world doing what he loves for a living made him forget from time to time about the everyday average American people with real life experience. He didn’t want it to be this way, but the old saying “Out of sight, out of mind” proved to be true in this unique situation.
Anthony Bailey: Oh wow, I’m so sorry to hear that.
Kevin’s Mother: Oh it’s fine. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t miss him or wish that he could have lived to meet and hold his only son but he died serving this country and I don’t think he would have had it any other way.
{{Anthony crouches down so that he becomes eye level with little Kevin.}}
Anthony Bailey: Look here buddy; I promise, for as long as I live, to beat up all the bad guys just for you. I could never be like your father but just know that I am proud of you just like he would have been. If I hold up to my promise, you have to also promise me something too…
{{Kevin’s eyes light up in anticipation.}}
Kevin: Yes?
Anthony Bailey: Promise me that you will obey your mother, that you will stay in school, and that you will grow up to become a man of honor and courage just like your dad. Can you promise me that?
{{Kevin nods his head and smiles as Anthony gives him a high five. His mother pulls out her cellular phone in hopes of capturing this special moment for her son on camera.}}
Kevin’s Mother: Excuse me Mr. Bailey, but can I please have a picture of you with my son? He’ll look back on this when he gets older and he’ll cherish this day.
{{Anthony answers without hesitation.}}
Anthony Bailey: Of course you can. It would be my privilege.
{{Tasha steps aside as Anthony remains in his crouching position but adjusts himself so that he is a bit more comfortable. Draping his arm across Kevin’s tiny shoulder, Kevin’s mother takes two pictures of them just in case the first one doesn’t end up coming out good enough. Anthony shakes her hand once they are done.}}
Kevin: Thank you Anthony!! I can’t wait to tell all my friends at school who I got to meet! Woohoo!
{{All the adults laugh at the same time once again.}}
Anthony Bailey: Well we must get going. There’s so much to do and see and I still have to finish packing for my flight to Lexington tomorrow for Asylum. You’ll be watching me tomorrow right Kevin?
Kevin’s Mother: I usually DVR Asylum for him since it comes on after his bedtime.
Anthony Bailey: Oh okay, that’s cool.
Tasha: Well, have a good day you two. Goodbye Kevin.
Kevin’s Mother: You do the same…
{{Anthony and Tasha walk off holding hands leaving Kevin and his mother behind. Shortly after zigzagging through the maze of people, Tasha speaks up.}}
Tasha: Hey babe, I’m going to go buy a smoothie from over there.
{{She points towards the mobile concession stand off in the distance.}}
Anthony Bailey: You sure you don’t want to get one later? That line is kind of long.
Tasha: It’s okay, I don’t mind waiting. I had one from there last year and it was so delicious.
{{Tasha licks her lips.}}
Anthony Bailey: Oh, alright then. I’ll wait for you then.
Tasha: Do you want anything?
Anthony Bailey: I’m good for now. Maybe later though.
{{They kiss and then Tasha walks off. Bailey walks a few steps over to a nearby tree and leans up against it. The cool weather on top of the friendly environment has him feeling at ease and you can tell by the placidity in his voice when he begins to speak.}}
What a glorious day this has turned out to be. Not only is the weather delightful but I’m amongst real people who are celebrating real American heroes who counted the cost and were willing to lay their lives on the line to defend the freedom of this country. And as you saw earlier, some weren’t just willing to lay their life down; some actually did. It’s men and women like this that make life worth living because they remind me that not everyone is out toiling to climb the corporate ladder in hopes of making the next big buck. While many are simply trying to screw the next man over because his primary agenda is self gain, there are many veterans who are the perfect embodiment of what it means to be selfless. Leaving behind your homeland, your families and friends, and all that you know to be as a life to serve your fellow man for the common and much greater good? If that isn’t commendable, then I don’t know what is…
Well I take that back because I don’t want to speak too soon. I most definitely know who or what isn’t commendable and that is none other than my opponent Johnny Knuckles himself. Isn’t he somewhat like the pest infestation that just won’t go away? I mean the best pest control company in town with cutting edge technology and satisfactory marks from the Better Business Bureau are even left puzzled because no matter what actions you choose to take, this pest is sincerely unbeatable. And not unbeatable in the unconquerable sense because look who we’re talking about here, but how else do I articulate the fact that he just won’t go away?
You have me worried Knuckles and it isn’t because of your ties to the Salieri Family and your “superb” MMA skills. I’m worried about your mental state because you never seem to get it. I’m not bashing your intellect but no matter how much I dumb down the statement of “You will lose to me at Asylum,” you don’t process the information for some reason. If I knock you down once, you’ll get up again. If I knock you down twice, your rebound will be coupled along with some threats. And if I knock you down three times, you’ll get right back up, resume talking trash, and pretend as if the other knockouts never happened. Why don’t you get it? What do I have to do to you for you to process this little bit of information through that thick skull of yours?
And I never denied the fact that you defeated Jason Kash, that doesn’t matter to me. Kash isn’t invincible; he’s a mere man just like the rest of us. I was just trying to emphasize that I did in one what night what it took you six years to do. And since you’ve been wrestling for twelve years altogether, let’s do the math…it took you half of your entire career to defeat one man in some wrestling promotion that is now irrelevant when it took me only a few months into my professional career to do the same exact thing. We can talk tough and throw Tyler Perry cheap shots in there all we want to Knuckles, but I am a man of facts and I will tell you how it is regardless of how you feel.
And speaking of Tyler, like him or not, you have to respect him for what he did. Now personally, I would never condone the actions of a man dressing up as a woman but what did he do in the broad spectrum of things? He defeated the afflictions of poverty and homelessness and he found a formula for screenwriting that caters to a certain demographic that he just duplicates over and over again and this has allowed him to become a very wealthy man. How’s that for an unlikely success story? I cannot hate on the man because he stays in his lane and he knows what he is capable of. You should take notes Knuckles, we need more people like him…people that know how to play their roles and stay in their lanes.
Failures have defined your twelve year tenure as a pro wrestler but not mine. That’s only one of the many differences between the two of us. Sure I have failed and fallen short inside of that ring, but who hasn’t? As great as Sally Talfourd, Kurt Noble, CJ Gates, Terry Marvin, Michael Callahan, Level-One, and many other APW megastars are, when have they not ever tasted the bitterness of defeat? Now am I going out on a limb and comparing myself to these legendary competitors? By no means is that my intent. But do I honestly believe with every strand of my soul that I will compete at their level one day in the future and be named among them? Oh you better believe that I will be. With an attitude, and not to mention a track record, like yours Knuckles you will never be mentioned among the greatest that this business has to offer or has ever produced.
Yeah, I lost the Tap Out Title but then what happened only a little while later? I became the World Champion. And yeah, I fell short at One Night In Hell, but what’s coming after that? You can definitely count on victory number two over you Knuckles. Sure it’s not exemplary and it might even make many look down on me because I actually came in contact with you, but I’m willing to endure such ridicule. If I can withstand this much absurdity coming out of your mouth these last few days, then I can most certainly undergo the shame of actually being excited over a victory over Johnny Knuckles. And though the win is inevitable, all pride aside, it would give you the opportunity to humble yourself and to soberly judge the entire scenario before making a premature assumption.
Like our country’s veterans, I am attempting to express gratitude towards my opponent and the situation at hand. I’m grateful to be able to physically participate in a match only two weeks after the most brutal match of my career so far. I’m grateful to be able to go out there tomorrow night and give all of those fans in Lexington something to remember. But most of all, I am grateful that I might be the one to finally bash Knuckles’ brains in so bad that his worldview would shift and he could finally stop thinking that he’s somebody special or even deserves to compete at the same level of this company’s best.
Expect the same Promise tomorrow night that I have always ventured to give to you. No gold is around my waist and no momentum is on my side but I am going to go out there and show you that hungry kid you all got to know so well these past few months. Your blood on the mat is a testament to the dedication you have, right along with your shoulders and back. Blood spewing out of your lifeless body as those shoulders have constantly been pinned won’t be any different than tomorrow and to think otherwise would be quite foolish on your part Knuckles. Oh and Knuckles, out of all people you should know that I’m not arrogant but I’m confident with who I am and I'm comfortable with who I am. I am Anthony Bailey…APW’s only Promise…the only Promise that can't be broken. Until Lexington…
