Definitely work on the length because you were almost 800 words under the RP limit. I like the potential your character has but to compete at a higher level, add more to your RP's. If you have trouble with what you want to say to make it longer (We all have trouble in this area), try discussing what's going on inside of your character's head that very moment, is he feeling confident about his upcoming match or insecure, what role does the past currently play on the present, etc.
Also adding supporting characters (girlfriends, friends, parents, managers, etc) could help you with the length and further development of your character.

Adding depth to your character is a good thing, but you also don't want to bore your reader. Concentrating on meeting or being near a word limit can reduce the quality of an RP because you are watering down your characters perspective/circumstances with distracting elements. If you can find a way to make it work, more power to you, but don't always rely on length as a solution.

I'm a huge advocate of quality over quantity but quantity doesn't necessarily have to reduce the quality. You just have to be wise and witty about it. I used to be way under the RP limit when I first started here last December because I had taken a five year hiatus from e-fedding so I had to get back into the groove of things. It took some time but now I feel that the quantity of my RP's are much better and the quality has not compromised, it actually increased to be honest.
