“I believe in everything until it's disproved. So I believe in fairies, the myths, dragons. It all exists, even if it's in your mind. Who's to say that dreams and nightmares aren't as real as the here and now?”
― John Lennon
Albany, New York will be the place where Jimmy Ice was going to put to rest any doubts of his wrestling ability. Okay, the old man got lucky in a triple threat match where the odds of winning are split. But, this is going to be a fifty-fifty affair as he was going against a Nightmare of a woman. Niobe Martin from his information gathered on his opponent she was on Meltdown before. Her first time didn’t go off to smoothly and she was shit canned faster than Don Imus after a racial filled tirade.
So it wasn’t like Jimmy Ice was frightened of coming up short. He lived for the competition and that fueled his adrenaline. There’s nothing he hasn’t accomplished in this great industry of professional wrestling. This industry has become a parody of itself. Let’s call it the Eazy-E factor the industry was getting up there in popularity and no doubt it’s legendary.
Yet, things have been lackluster in recent years and the business is dying year by year. Wrestling needs someone to put them back on the tracks as its hanging barely on the rails. It’s like that Denzel Washington Unstoppable alas there’s hope though.
The hope is here in the form of Calvin Tobias James better known as Jimmy Ice. Being in the New York area made it almost automatic for Jimmy to visit his ex-fiancée’ who was in town at her condominium in upper Manhattan. The limousine chauffeured Jimmy to her condo where he still had the key too. It was his awkward ex syndrome to show up unannounced lucky for him Marcelo was nowhere around and he heard Missy singing in the shower.
He went into the condo setting his suit jacket down on the luxurious sofa cushion in the living room. Jimmy Ice sat down wondering what went wrong between him & Missy eying a picture of her and him surfing in Honolulu on his IPhone 5. Missy entered center right with a surprised gasp as her pink robe clung to her perfectly curved body while she scolded her ex-fiancée.
Jimmy Ice: “Well, wet as usual Missy it’s a habit when I’m around isn’t it? I know you’re wondering why the hell I’m here I’m wondering if you’d like to accompany for my match at the Meltdown show up in Albany. Yes, it will bring back so many memories but I’m sure some of our old fans would love to see us reunited in some shape or form. My brother Nicholas also wants to see you he and Beth asked about you they live in Albany now. Ah… they had twins a year ago identical boys Toby & Cal. I’m sorry for the things I said that wasn’t….”
Missy didn’t know what got over her but she kissed him upon his lips he held her waist the towel slipping briefly before she gained composure. She eyed him for a moment before thinking for a moment not knowing how to respond. The corners of her mouth seemed to beam in somewhat of a half assed smile.
Missy Monroe: “That was intense there big boy. I’ve been meaning to call Nicky and his gorgeous wife Beth. I guess I’ve been too busy for anything. I did a spread for Playboy™ it should be in the December issue. I’m on the cover for a historic sixth time. Also I’ve been missing being your manager but that’s all I can be. I still love you but I also love Marcelo. If it doesn’t work I’ll give you a call because being wet around you is definitely a habit…”
Jimmy Ice smiled before kissing her briefly again. She went to get dressed before they headed to Albany to visit his brother and his family. Missy didn’t see them in almost two years at the latest. So it was time for the gang to all come together.
It felt like a cheesy reunion of a cast to a show that’s no longer on the air with new episodes or seasons. Jimmy rang the doorbell when they arrived at Nick’s house. He opened the door gave his brother a firm handshake and kissed Missy on the cheek.
He welcomed them into his home they went to the den area where Beth sat with the twins in her arms. Missy whisked over to where she was and took hold of one of the twins which appeared to be Cal. In a recliner was a familiar face it was Nick & Jimmy’s personal trainer Harry Oswald who now was pushing sixty eight but was built like a mac truck. A smile immediately came upon his face as he saw Jimmy.
Harry Oswald: “Look what the god damn wind blew in. It’s “The Iron Man” looking good there I remember when you were a little scrawny puke back in Dallas. My training regime was a little strong on you your folks thought but I think you and Nicky pulled through. Kevin would be so proud of his two best friends if only he was…”
Harry couldn’t finish the sentence as Jimmy sat next to him in a stool holding his hand. Kevin Oswald was Jimmy Ice’s personal assistant up until his death three years ago. May 2009 he was killed in a burglary attempt at his Houston, Texas home. Kevin was quite the athlete himself and he always had wanted to be a wrestler. He didn’t venture into wrestling due to the fact his assistant job was going smoothly and he found it better to cheer form the sidelines than compete.
Jimmy Ice: “Kev… was a saint who deserved the spotlight more than the James brothers. Nick and I have dedicated everything in his memory. Nick isn’t a wrestler anymore though he’s a university professor and he won’t ever be near the profession again. I on the other hand have lost so many close to me that this is all for them. It’s the last ride into the sunset for Butch Cassidy while the Sundance Kid has already laid his six shooters to rest. I’m going to be World Champion again and it will be in Kevin’s name. First I must go through Niobe Martin. She’s a woman and of course I’m going to take it easy. As it’s in my plans to be drafted to Asylum and be champion of the World again she’ll have to be left in coldness though. I’ll be the freezer burnt blemish on her record and career as it’s all been put into play. Don’t worry Harry it’ll be alright.”
While Jimmy was comforting Harry Nick was in the kitchen getting glasses of champagne. Toby & Cal were fast asleep in their playpen now. Missy helped Nicholas with the tray of champagne glasses as Beth looked on from a kind distance. Nicholas began talking as him and Missy sat the champagne tray in the middle of a coffee table.
Nicholas: “I remember when Kevin & Calvin were in the running for high school class president. Kevin was not going to back down and neither was my older brother. Calvin set up a kissing booth which was very popular due to his jock status. He was giving out free kisses ranging from nerdy chicks to the clinically insane chicks. It was all to win the votes in the end Kevin one by one vote and till this day my brother doesn’t know the truth. Truth is bro I voted for Kevin and I only told you I voted for you to get your rookie Jackie Robinson baseball card.”
Jimmy Ice chuckled and so did everyone else. Nicholas always had the habit of making people laugh in times of grief or sadness. He was a Patch Adams type for sure and that’s what made him special. Beth kissed him on the cheek while the others got up a champagne glass she then followed. She clunks her glass a little getting everyone’s attention.
Beth; “I’m not too really much of a speech giver but I was pleasured enough to meet Kevin Oswald. If you didn’t know he and I used to date back in high school. We were going to go to senior prom together but he had to cancel. Sherry Jones told me the night of prom that Kevin would be there that night but with Veronica Lang. I was a flat chested senior in band so it wasn’t really a huge shocker. But, there was someone who swept me off my feet that night and he’s still by my side till this day. I miss Kevin he was my first love and he was a damn good friend. So this toast is in his memory. Towards the heaven we all hope to someday occupy as well. To Kevin…”
Jimmy Ice, Harry, Missy, Beth & Nick all raised their glasses clicking them together before saying in unison.
All: “To Kevin…”
That night Jimmy Ice was stuck in his own mind hiding inside himself. He found himself in the Graceland Cemetery and Mausoleum. In the dead of night crickets chirp and owls voice their approval to one another. Jimmy pressed his hand upon his head to wake up from his trance. He then opened his eyes looking around the cemetery before sitting in a wooden chair next to a freshly dug grave. He eyed a video camera set up before pressing record on the side and sitting back down in the old oak wood chair.
Jimmy Ice: “I should be dead and that still haunts me till this day. A hidden secret some of you out there may not know is that I’m scared of dying. I never envisioned me in a casket six feet under or being cremated before being cast across the world’s oceans. Until now as I’ve finally made peace with the Grim Reaper. In exchange for a victory over the nightmarish Niobe Martin I’ll be at peace with dying. There’s the saying only the strong survive. Well I’ve been bred in Dallas, Texas and you know everything’s bigger in Texas. My fight, my ability and my desires are what drive me and without a shadow of a doubt the drive shall continue.”
The shallow grave is then illuminated in fluorescent lights before showing a tombstone with the name of Niobe Martin upon it. Jimmy looks toward the grave without much emotion upon his face. His expressions are masked in confidence the sheer confidence that led him toward numerous World Heavyweight Championships.
Jimmy Ice: “There’s something that still lingers and it puzzles me till this day. It’s like a spirit stuck in limbo resting on my shoulder. It’s like my guardian angel that rescued me and the co-pilot in that fatal plane crash. No longer shall my life be taken for granted. No longer shall material things matter to me as much as my life here on planet earth. I rebuke the nightmares and I rebuke the hand of Lucifer. I’m going to climb back on my saddle one day and there won’t be anyone who will take me down. I am the “Iron Man” and I am forever. You think you can break me but my will is more powerful than you can imagine. You see I’m here for a reason people may come and go like Glacier for example. But, I’m not going anywhere until I am standing in front of the Asylum roster on top of the world once more. We were all born for a reason big or small God’s plan shall unravel in time. It will unravel like a ball of yarn and we will all be where he wants us to be. Whether he calls us home at a young age it was all a part of his plan. People die so others can truly live. It’s called the circle of life and I understand that time. My circle still turns and that fire still burns deep in my underbelly. I’m going to show the Meltdown roster what I’m all about and no one will ever question my heart again. This is my life and I live for competition it’s my addiction. And it’s a healthy addiction so rehab is out of the question.”
As Jimmy Ice spoke the thunder started to roll and the lightning crackled in the background as he sat still. He swore he could Kevin Oswald’s voice whisper in his ear and he started crying. He then smiled briefly before addressing the camera that was covered with plastic. He was glad he prepared for the coming storm so his message would go untarnished.
Jimmy Ice: “Yes, Kevin it’s me in a graveyard telling all my deepest darkest fears in hopes of no longer being afraid. I miss you my old friend but you were more than a friend you were my surrogate brother. It was me, you and Nick since day one and for that I think you. Your pops helped us get into the best shape of our lives and you were a damn good assistant. I don’t believe you are truly gone you’re just waiting for me beyond the pearly gates. Save a seat for me I’m going to be there sooner or later. Niobe Martin….this Monday Night I’m going to put you to rest and it will be a part of God’s plan. So don’t take it for granted this life or the afterlife as it can be gone in a count of one… two… three.”
Jimmy Ice got up and turned the video camera off before grabbing it and carrying under his coat. He walked out of the camera’s view as the rain came pouring down before too long it stopped and in the balance a shooting star came across the sky as the scene slowly faded away.
