“My hands are tied Chris.”
President Jeff stares across the oak desk at Chris Hart, Thursday Night Overdrive on the flat panel television screen beside the two. Chris absently turns and looks at the screen as the smug smiling Kurt Noble looks back at him. “You run the company! What you say goes” he remarks as Chris shakes his head.
“But I’m not above the law. There’s a contract in place Chris and I’m bound by its terms. Believe me, I’m not happy about this either. Kurt moved a ton of merchandise, his entire ‘believe’ deal helped push APW to the top, Noble-Hart was a boon for business too. I’m out money on this entire arrangement Chris” President Jeff says in a tempered tone as Chris runs his hands through his blonde hair.
“Then help me Chris” Chris pleads.“You can’t dishonour the contract, fine, but there’s ways around that.”
President Jeff chuckles for a moment as he turns and looks at Chris. “Like a hokey luchadore costume Chris … sorry, Numero Uno.
Chris bows his head for a moment, hiding the slight smile that’s slipped across his face mirroring that of President Jeff. “Exactly. I tried for the tag team titles but Duvall’s sticking his nose into places it doesn’t belong. I can get through to Kurt Jeff, I just need time” Chris states as he raises his head.
“I can’t give you that time though Chris, we’re under a month away from …”
“Sorry, what was that?” Chris interrupts.
“I was saying that we’re less than a month away from Christmas Chaos. I can’t throw you into some random title match at this point. As far as I’m concerned Kurt Noble vs. Chris Hart is on.”
Chris smiles to himself as Jeff nods his head in a curious manner. “Why do I have a feeling I’m not going to like what I’m about to here? he questions as Chris leans back.
“What would happen if I were suspended for the next month. That would take me into the new years, that’d give Kurt time to cool down, realize what exactly he had. There’d be no tag-team champions and we could go back after our belts. It’d be perfect” Chris remarks as Jeff shakes his head.
“And what would I suspend you for?”
“Given my history Jeff – no one would blink twice at anything, Drugs, conduct detrimental to the company …”
“Charges that would ruin your career.” Jeff interrupts as Chris turns and looks once again at the television as Kurt slams the knife into the turkey.
Turning back to Jeff, Chris shakes his head side to side, his eyes stern. “I don’t care Jeff. I told you the first time we met that I wasn’t doing this for me. I don’t need wrestling anymore. If I have to sacrifice my career for Kurt – then so be it.”
Jeff looks Chris directly in the eye, weighing his options, before he leans back in his chair. “I’m not going to suspend you Chris, and at Christmas Chaos you’re going to face Kurt Noble one on one.”
“I …”
“That doesn’t mean I’m not going to aid you” Jeff interrupts before continuing on. “I know you’re smart enough to have a backup plan Chris. Strike, Marvin … it’s all in black and white for everyone to see. Noble’s started it off with Callahan on his side.”
“How is this aiding me Jeff?” Chris asks frustratedly.
“I’m going to give you an opportunity to bring someone into the company to have your back at all times though. Someone you can trust above all else …” Jeff states as he reaches into his desk and pulls out a blank talent contract as Chris’ eyes go wide.
“Anyone I want?” Chris double checks as Jeff nods in agreement.
“I don’t care who it is. If there’s a buy-out we’ll take care of that. It’s good for business for me to Chris. Anyone you trust enough to have your back in a situation like this will be an asset for APW” Jeff affirms as he signs the blank contract before passing it across the table to Chris.
“Thanks” Chris says with an almost sheepish smile on his face before it turns into a glare towards Jeff as he rips the contract up. “for nothing.”
Chris gets up out of the chair as he glares at the grinning face of Kurt Noble staring back at him, before showing himself the door as President Jeff looks on, stunned.

Two Hours Before Overdrive
“I wondered if you were going to show up”[/B]
Terry Marvin smiles at Chris Hart as he steps into the locker room of the Undisputed Champion, his first time on Overdrive since the savage assault at the hands of Kurt Noble. “I’ve got a job to do” Chris says as Marvin smiles.
“It’s just CJ Gates, it’s not like you’re facing some real competition” Terry smirks as Chris shakes his head. “And in case you’re wondering – I’m not going to ask you for any tips on how to beat Level-One. I’m not planning on leaving in a pine box.”
Chris shakes his head in bemusement at Terry as he leans against the wall and stares at the champion. “I don’t care about CJ Gates” he says as Terry shakes his head.
“This isn’t going to be another one of your ‘I don’t care about wins and losses’ deals is it. That was old like, six months ago Chris” Terry smirks as Chris nods his head in the negative.
“No” he responds.
“Then cut the bullshit and give him hell. I heard there’s some Numero Dos guy on Meltdown that’s catching the eye of Rebel. He might be looking at making a swap and I imagine your head would be the first on the chopping block. I mean, when was the last time you won a match?” Terry replies as Chris shakes his head.
“I get it Terry, I suck, you’re the champion for a reason”
“It’s Showtime!” Terry responds as he raises the title belt in the air above his head as Chris can’t help but chuckle slightly at the near juvenile display.
“All I care about tonight is making sure that everything goes according to plan”
“The ‘I’m not fighting Noble’ plan? Give it up Chris; Strike’s told you, Jeff’s told you, I’ve told you. It’s going to happen whether you like it or not – you have no way out” Terry says as Chris smiles slightly.
“That’s actually why I came here. You’ve got your match with Level-One tonight, and I’ve still got the favour that Jeff owes me for being the sole survivor at Rasslemania. I come down to the ring after your victory, Hart-Break, new Undisputed Champion. You use your rematch clause to get in the match at Christmas Chaos, we take care of Biggs, I lay down for you … you get your title back and I avoid Kurt” Chris says rather rapidly as Marvin shakes his head.
“I didn’t just hear that?” Terry questions
“I don’t care Terry. There’s things that are more important than morals …”
“It’s not the morals I’m concerned with” Terry interrupts. “It’s that you’re scheming to get my title from around my waist. I didn’t make it through the Test for the Best, the Elimination Chamber, and Biggs’ Cartoon Network Special to just give it up.”
“Yeah, and you’ll get it back. You said it yourself Terry, when was the last time I won a match? Even if I did try and backstab you it wouldn’t make a difference, you’d still beat me in the ring.” Chris says but Marvin still shakes his head.
“Then it’s my morals. As someone on the straight and narrow I can’t knowingly corrupt this title through a series of back room deals. It’s a good plan Chris … but you’re going to need to fight him sooner or later. Everyone knows it except you Chris … and most of us are behind you” Terry states.
“What do you mean?” Chris asks.
“Well you were off gallivanting with Talfourd, I was doing a little recognizance for you. It seems as if not everyone believes in Kurt Noble anymore” Terry says as Chris bemusedly shakes his head at the rhetorical statement. “They’d also be more than willing to help you out should the time come. Everyone’s afraid of Kurt Chris; the person who steps up to him isn’t going to do it alone.”
Chris stares at Terry for a moment, his head pulsing in thought before he turns around towards the door. “I don’t need any help Terry. It’s not happening. I’m not going to fight Kurt Noble, no matter what happens.”
With that Chris steps outside the door, pulling it shut behind him, the last shot Terry Marvin shaking his head.
