"Be careful not to mistake insecurity and inadequacy for humility! Humility has nothing to do with the insecure and inadequate! Just like arrogance has nothing to do with greatness!" – C. JoyBell C.
As a role model to many, Bailey constantly struggled with the characteristic of humility. The sense of entitlement was more of his aptitude, especially with previously holding two APW titles in his rookie year and now spearheading The Dying Breed, a new stable that is bound to take APW by storm in the near future. Bailey’s talent did give him some sort of claim and "bragging rights" if you will, but that wasn’t the kind of person he was deep down inside. He would much rather for his fellow man to excel than to publically flaunt his own accolades. Were the Sons of the South right? Was Bailey a “fraud” and truly as humble as he represented himself to be?
{{The scene opens to the inside of Anthony Bailey’s luxurious townhouse located in St. Augustine, FL. Anthony and his girlfriend Tasha are cuddled up together on the black leather couch in front of the television. The TV is on but it is muted. Dressed in a plain white T-shirt and blue Nike basketball shorts, he scrolls through his iPhone for a brief moment. Tasha, clad in a black tanktop and pink shorts, is also messing around on her phone when she suddenly ventures to bring something to Anthony’s attention. Almost instantly, Bailey takes his eyes off of his phone and fixes his attention to hers.}}
Tasha: Man oh man babe, Buckson Gooch gave you a verbal onslaught! Did you have a chance to catch his promo yet?
{{Bailey’s facial expression makes it evident that he doesn’t agree with Tasha’s statement.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Yeah, I caught it a little while ago but I am a bit unfamiliar with who he is. He’s on Overdrive right?
Tasha: Yup. He just got drafted there not too long ago.
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Oh okay. Is he the one who hangs out with Terry Marvin and Level-One?
Tasha: No, he’s only affiliated with his tag team partner Mac Bane as far as I know…
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Is he associated with Kurt Noble, CJ Gates, or Biggs?
Tasha: Babe, did you not just hear what I said?
{{Bailey decides to proceed without deliberation.}}
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: Oh, I know exactly who he is now…he’s General Manager Johnny Rebel’s new secret weapon right?
{{Tasha pouts her lips as she is known to do whenever she is frustrated.}}
I’m just playing baby. But as you can tell… I’m trying to make a point. Now it’s not about whom you are connected with that gives you your value, but the company that you keep speaks volumes about you. I’m clueless as to who The Dying Breed’s opponents are for tomorrow night in Hartford. The Sons of the South eh? I don’t know them but they sure do seem to know a lot about me. I mean this guy teams with a man known as the “One-Man Wrecking Crew.” I hope you caught that as quickly as I did. If his partner was really that destructive by himself, why would he need a partner in the first place? I was unaware of particular farms being in the business of cultivating contradictions…
Tasha: I just don’t know what his or his partner’s deal is. Whatever happened to southern hospitality?
Anthony "The Promise" Bailey: No idea boo…maybe it’s all the genetically modified organisms that they’ve been harvesting and consuming over the years.
{{Anthony places his phone on the coffee table in front of him and straightens his posture by sitting up straight. He looks directly into the camera and continues to speak.}}
First off Buckson Gooch, I salute you. I know that we are not acquainted with one another, but I commend you for being an upright man of honor. To see the way that you cherish your family and your farmland is admirable. Now I’m not one to judge because I don’t know the true motives of everyone’s nature, but not many APW megastars are like you. A lot of them are fighting on the behalf of fame and fortune and not on the behalf of a loving wife or children who think highly of their father. They wrestle to be recognized and not to influence or invigorate a generation to come. That’s why I have delivered these salutations Mr. Gooch because you appear to be a man just like myself. A man who wants to make a comfortable living while not only doing what he loves but at the same time traveling the globe and making a difference. And just as I told Yarmouth, the verbal acclaim of you and your partner Mac Bane will continue to be affirmed by The Promise…
Bailey originally wanted to “kill” his opponents with kindness metaphorically speaking, but after their attempt to minimize who he was and what he stood for, his offensive strategy completely shifted at the drop of a dime.
{{Bailey’s demeanor switches from lighthearted to serious in an instant.}}
But that’s only if I am not apart of the equation. And this equation originally had a simple solution Gooch. There’s nothing really elaborate about four men testing their skills against one another with the hope of their team advancing to the Tag Team Championship match at Christmas Chaos. I mean that’s why we’re all in this, correct? But you complicated things when you publically made false incriminations about me. Momma’s ol’ homeschooling down at the farm must’ve taught you the critical thinking skills that I thought you lacked. I am a fraud because a camera follows me around?
When I was on the brink of becoming angered by your ignorant statement, I took a second to think and I put myself in your position. If I were an APW megastar, though greatly lacking in the spheres of “mega” and “star,” named Buckson Gooch, how would I get my message to the masses? I mean, you could opt to use morse code from the barn since the Wi-Fi hasn’t been installed yet, but what are the means and the tools available to me in the twenty-first century to get my message out or even make this a possibility? Then a simple revelation came to me…so simple that even Einstein could have clearly vocalized it before the age of nine.
Albert Einstein was unable to speak fluently until the age of nine. He didn’t speak at all until age four.
The revelation of cameras being absolutely necessary and not optional in this business. They may not be necessary down on the farm to endorse the validity of milking the cows or feeding the hens, but in this business, you live and die by this tool. This gadget that you stare into and as it gazes back into the windows of your soul; all is revealed about you. Whether good or bad. And by the looks of things in your promo, the Sons of the South have just signed their own death warrant. You spoke out of line and tried to discredit me to no avail. Had I realized that my life would literally be under a microscope almost twenty-four seven when I went to meet up with Reginald Schmidt last December to finalize all the details of my APW contract, I might have actually taken that Fortune 500 job after college after all…
You want to know why these cameras are seemingly always around to capture all my “benevolent” deeds? It’s because I can’t escape them. Dwelling in the public eye is what I signed up for when I chose to pursue my passion for professional wrestling. I was content with competing in my mentor Frank Cavalli’s old gymnasium where no one knew who I was. But my contentment never bred complacency, so I always had a vision to expand. Besides the naysayers, the paparazzi have never had my best interest in mind. The fans do and The Dying Breed does, but apart from that? I doubt that anyone does. Why do you think Jason Kash likes to call me a recluse? I stay home for the opportunity of one, utilizing a camera man who is employed by APW, and secondly, because I do not want some random camera tagging along for every move that I make. Who knows how they might edit the footage to portray me? Though this is the part of the business that I’m not too fond of, I accept the fact that it is what it is and I keep on pressing. Cameras don’t create illusions Gooch, at least not in my world.
Maybe that’s the case in Hollywood and for other APW megastars, but with me? It just captures what I’d normally be doing any way. The reason why cameras are so foreign to the Sons of the South is because I believe that personally, no paparazzi member in his right mind would desire to follow you around all day while you bicker about me in the midst of pig slop. While you label me a fraud and attempt to assassinate my character. You guys aren’t interesting or relevant enough to be pursued by the media like I am. And this isn’t pride talking because I am so grateful for the position that God has put me in. I want people to catch wind of what I’m doing, but not for the sake of Anthony Reese Bailey, but for the fans and for the future to come. But you should know what my goals are since you are so “familiar” with who I am and what my motives are.
Fame never captivated me because I’m a private person, though at times I like to show my transparency and reveal that I am a regular human being just like the rest of the people who tune into my promos. I wasn’t sitting in my dorm room at Flagler College brainstorming on ways that I could take the world by storm and become a media sensation. I wasn’t auditioning for reality shows or making explicit tapes of my girlfriend and I. The fact that I brought something new and refreshing to APW and to Asylum and was successful at doing so was what made it this way. It wasn’t me calling myself the “golden boy,” it was the people. You guys are new around here so you are unfamiliar with the way things are. Grace will be given and slack will be cut. But just to clue you in on a little secret…people will care about you and shed light on what you have going on because they want to, not because they are coerced into doing so.
I cannot make people care Gooch and Bane, despite whatever lies you have chosen to believe. And Bane, I’m not trying to sell anything. I came to APW to freely give…to give of my time and my talent. My track record, the track record that you think you have all figured out, speaks for itself. Living some kind of untruth for an entire year while concealing some ulterior motives is senseless. Usually blame shifting is the first sign of guilt. Take the biblical characters father and son, Adam and Cain. Both were proven to be guilty before the eyes of God and when they were confronted, Adam blamed his wife and Cain just acted perplexed as he uttered the timeless question “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
The Promise is not God and has never claimed to be, but you both are guilty before my eyes. You two are the true frauds and tomorrow night on Meltdown, J-Hop and I will expose you. I bought the whole “two men who toil with all of their might in the farming pastures of America to provide for their families” bit at first. But there was a special skill that I possessed prior to APW, FAWA, and Flagler College. I possess the ability to discern between truth and error and I discern that the two of you are up to no good and therefore need to be eradicated. In time, all things will be revealed Gooch and Bane but unfortunately for you, that time begins tomorrow inside of that ring. Use wisdom the next time you aim to criticize me and have all the facts laid out before you nice and neatly. Why? It’s because I am Anthony Bailey…a former Tap Out Champion and a former World Champion…APW’s only Promise…the only Promise that can't be broken. I will be seeing you two tomorrow night…
