The camera fades in to Buckson Gooch sitting next to his wife. She is still laying motionless in the hospital bed. The occasional beep breaks up the soft sobs of Mr. Gooch. He is holding her hand with one of his massive paws, the other he wipes away tears.
Buckson Gooch: Mama, I’m not doing very good. I feel like I'm failing, I feel it in my mind. I'm letting down the family
The final words breaks up his voice, he starts to lose his composure.
Buckson Gooch: The pressure is getting to me Mama. We’ve lost two matches in a row...and it’s all my fault. I’m dragging Bane down.
From knuckle to halfway up his forearm, Gooch smears a string of clear snot making it look like a slug has crawled up his arm. He regains his composure and keeps taking to his comatose wife.
Buckson Gooch: Mac Bane has carved for himself a reputation as a monster. He’s a man people don’t want to mess with. We’ve been to his matches when UCWA would come to Little Rock. He earned the nickname “One Man Wrecking Crew.” He is heralded as a singles great and has been in a few Hall of Fames to boot. He flew me in to watch the 3 levels of Hell match with him and The Bob Pooler. It was graphic, violent, and changed the face of that company...that large company. He cemented that nickname. He added on to his legacy. He was the “One Man Wrecking Crew” before we teamed up...long before. He wanted to do tag work to help us out of our money pinch, and all I’ve done is let him down. Part of me wonders if he would do better in his matches if I weren’t even there. Mac Bane is a megastar in every sense of the word, and people are viewing him as less than that because of me. I'm not carrying my weight in wrestling or at home...
Buck lowers his head, his seemingly always matted hair falls over his face.
Buckson Gooch: Mama, I just don’t think I have it in me this week. I’m facing Nick Watson. I know that doesn’t mean much to you, but it does to APW. He’s a polished Megastar. If I’m struggling even having Bane as a partner...how in the world am I going to compete this week in a singles match against one of the best wrestlers here. He's not just tough...he's trained. His muay thai ability sets him apart. He could very well be one of the best in the world in that field...but I don't blame him for coming to wrestling. He has had it rough in the past and transcended that. I'll give him my best, but my best sure doesn't feel like much lately.
Buck takes his hand away from Annabelle’s and rests his hands on his forehead.
Buckson Gooch: I’ve always believed in myself, I’ve always believed that hard work pays off. We’ve struggled for years and years...I’ve always felt I was a strong man, but Mama. This wrestling thing is too much for me. I just can’t compete at the elite level. Not only am I letting down Bane, but I’m letting you and the kids down. The medical bills are already piling up, and I’m starting to see the writing on the wall...we may lose the farm after all. That verman Josie is waiting in the wings. I know it was him that did this to you. I couldn’t stop him, I’ve let the team down, I’m letting the family down...
Buck breaks out in big sobs. Buck is a genuine human being. His emotions are real and he doesn’t have to hide them. He’s wiping tears, wiping snot, running his fingers through his hair...it isn’t a pretty sight.
“I believe in you Buck.”
Buck darts his head up to see Annabelle looking right at him. She smiles a sweet smile that a wife of 17 years would give to the man she loves today as much as the day they got married.
Annabelle Gooch: Buck, do your best. All things work out for good.
What Gooch doesn’t know is that Annabelle’s eyes opened sometime after he put his head in his hands.
Annabelle Gooch: You can’t expect to dominate wrestling so quickly, it’s going to take time. Keep giving your best and learning. I know Mac is happy to have you and understands it takes time to mature in wrestling. You’re a good man, Buckson Gooch and a good provider. Go out and do your best this week.
Buck grabs Annabelle’s hand and kisses it and she rubs his dirty face and smiles. The nurse comes in and is excited to see that Mrs. Gooch is awake and calls the doctor. Buck and Annabelle stare into each other’s eyes.
Buck’s love is awake and telling him to do his best...and he’ll do it with a flare of Southern Hospitality.
