"In association with Action Packed Wrestling..."
is next to appear, holds, then fades out for
"Happy Endings T.V."
Which fades away to a shot of the most elegant, most beautiful, most talented Asylum ... indeed, APW ... talent: Sally Talfourd. The woman who has taken Asylum by storm stands before us all, dressed swanky in a business suit, and the World Heavyweight Title hanging over her shoulder like the prized possession it is. She’s walking towards the camera, who is backing up just as fast to avoid a collision.
[Sally] Hello fans and super fans alike. Welcome back to Happy Endings. You’re in for a treat today. I’m taking you inside somewhere special. A place that just about everyone in APW wants to get in.
Sally manages to step around Shane and the camera and throws open a big set of nice looking doors. Inside there’s a long desk with lots of paper scattered over it. On one far wall, a big whiteboard with profile shots of all the Asylum megastars stuck up. It’s looking very interesting indeed.
[Sally] This ... this is the Four Pillars war room. This is where the change, the revolution, of Asylum is going to happen. In here, we are planning the ascent of Asylum. But, come here for a second...
Sally gestures for Shane to follow. He obliges. We are taken over to the whiteboard and there we find a picture of Sally and a picture of Aubrey J. Parker with a big ‘V’ in between them.
[Sally] See this? *Sally taps the big V*[/b] This is what’s happening this week., obviously. This is all the rage. This is all over the web and magazines. This is what everyone is talking about. The dream match-up between the fan’s oldest and newest darling. Sally Talfourd, the veteran, taking on Aubrey J. Parker, the new comer. And ... if you want to know ... *Sally’s voice comes down to a whisper*[/b] ... even I’ve been looking forward to this match now. [/color]
[Shane] Really?
[Sally] Absolutely! For months now!
Sally gestures for Shane to follow. The two take a seat across from each other at the big table. Sally stacks some papers to move away, then ever-so-carefully lays the World Heavyweight Title in front of her.
[Shane] How come? What’s important about this match? Granted, two women in the ring is...
[Sally] Stop right there Shane! This isn’t just ‘two women’. Anyone thinking that isn’t thinking enough! This is two of the best wrestlers in APW taking on each other. This is two of the best technicians plying their trade. This is two artists competing for an audience.
And it’s true, isn’t it? Wrestling, when it means something so important that you feel like you’re living and dying for it (and, let’s face it, Sally and Aubrey are definitely doing that!), becomes more than just a sport. And every match, it becomes more than just a match. And a performance, it becomes more than just that.
[Sally] And if anyone was of an idea that I personally wouldn’t be looking forward to a match like this, then they are completely wrong.
[Shane] But it is a big match. And the last before the pay per view. If you lose, it changes everything. You have to be at least a little hesitant.
[Sally] No, Shane. So much no. You see, this match ... this is exactly what I and the Four Pillars wants. This is what we want Asylum to be: Matches of excellence. Aubrey know this. Well, you should know, Aubrey. This match, this contest that’s about to go down between us ... this is everything I want. This is what the Four Pillars want. This is what the fans want. If you had any thought that, you know, I didn’t want this match or I’d be worried about it or I’d be trying my best to avoid you, then you’re dead wrong. I want this match, Aubrey, because this is what Asylum should be. It should deliver to the fans. It should set the standard. It should excite. And this match of ours, it’s doing all that and more.
The two most popular women.
For the world title.
To close out the year.
What else can the fans ask for? What else can we ask for. I want the competition, you want the title. There’s nothing left other than to bring the house down with what we can do in the ring. And you and I ... we can do some amazing things. I’ve seen you wrestle. No doubt you’ve seen me wrestle. We are the best females APW has had in the ring. We are two people that capture the attention of everyone - not just those in the arena but anyone with half an interest in wrestling.
That’s what wrestling ... what Asylum ... what APW is about: Delivering to the fans. And week in and week out, Sally is doing that. More-so now that the Pillars are making that their mission. But the fans want more than just the words on a page. It’s not the match idea that gets people excited, but the wrestling. The action. The grace and finesse that comes out of the competitors. And when it comes to that, the fans are absolutely salivating. They know that in the ring, Sally is among the best. Sally has moves, she has foresight, she has smarts to make any match her match. Not just any match. Her match.
[Sally] But, as I was listening to you make your case as to why it is you care about this match ... I lost hope. I started to realise that, well, you aren’t the woman I thought you were. Yeah, sure, you’re still a decent wrestler and, yes, the fans still want to see us go toe-to-toe. But, they don’t see you the way I see you. They listened to your words, but I don’t think they understood you. For, you see, everything you were saying - your speculations about Christmas Chaos, your dreams of being the champion, the intimidation you feel - it’s all the same stuff I was saying ... when I first got a chance to step into the spotlight.
Right before I won this belt, I said that there’s no plan B when it comes to my preparation. There’s no alternatives, nothing else to be planned for. There’s no plan B because it takes away my attention and focus from plan A. It takes time to think like this. It takes experience and practice and work to get into this mindset. And, try as you might, you can’t just will yourself there. The same way you can’t will yourself to winning. You might want to win, but this isn’t a contest of want. It’s a contest of skill and ability and strength. Not just physical strength but strength of mind too. My mind is stronger than yours, Aubrey. You’re not a fool or an idiot or a simpleton. You’re smart in every respect. But you’re still niave. You’re still distracted. You’re still thinking about plan B’s and C’s and D’s. Me? I’m thinking abut plan A ...
... beating you this week.
I’m not thinking about Christmas Chaos and what I’ll be doing. I’m not thinking about the last show I was on. I’m not thinking about whether I’m ready for this or not. No, I’m thinking about the match, Aubrey. I’m thinking about you, Aubrey. I’m thinking about winning, Aubrey. When I listened to you, I heard a young, excited, naive voice of a woman trying to talk herself into believing something that just isn’t true. When you listen to me, you don’t hear that. You hear the voice of a champion. And there’s the difference between us, Aubrey. I’m ready to be a champion. You are not.
Ah, the age-old debate about age and experience and all that stuff. But, it must have some weight to it if it’s constantly being raised. Let’s have a think about it. There has to be a time when someone can feel ready. When deep down they know that they have the strength to not only hold up that title, but hold up the whole of the expectations that the fans have of the show. Because, let’s face it, when you’re a world champion you’re the face and the body and the mind of the show. You’re the first person everyone looks to, and the first person everyone listens to. Does Aubrey really think that she’s the sort of people that can lead? That can revolutionize Asylum the way that Sally has planned?
[Foster] Spoke like a true champion!
The camera pivots around to find a well-dressed man angling over to take alongside Sally. The two exchange a look and a nod. This is Matt Foster - the Strategy Consultant for the Four Pillars. For a long time, he’s been managing Sally’s ‘behind the scene’s stuff, but now he’s here to help the Pillars get to the top, and do what they need to do.
[Foster] And so long as you’re thinking like a champion, you’ll stay one!
That’s the difference, isn’t it? Mindset?
[Sally] And when she thinks about all these other things, when her mind goes off on a tangent, she doesn’t make it any easier on herself. Its builds up, the pressure. She starts to pile it on and on and on. And, trust me Aubrey, that’s not good. That’s not good for anyone. It clouds your mind with the most dangerous thing in our business. The fog of war. You can’t see through it. You can’t see yourself. You can’t see your opponent. It’s a cloud that ruins people in a match.
[Foster] The fog of war ...
[Sally] The fog of war, Aubrey. And isn’t it appropriate that we’re talking about it here - in our war room. That’s what’s forming right now in your mind. And when it takes over ... what will you do? What will you do when you can’t see me ... can’t catch me ... can pin me? How will you dominate a match? Win a match? Even compete in the match if you have to concentrate on putting one foot in front of another, not trying to grind me down?
[Foster] That’s right Sally. You just need to do what you’ve been doing for week after week after week. Since day one when you came to APW, you’ve been focused on the true goals: The match. Not more, not less. Just the match.
[Sally] But first ... we’ve got to get some business done. Have you made the arrangements?
[Foster] Everything’s ready and waiting. Are you ready?
[Sally] Yes sir! Shane, you’re coming with us. We’ve got some preparation you’re not going to want to miss! Foster has been on top of the research, and he’s found someone ... well ... well, you’ll see soon enough!
Sally gestures her head to the door and all three start to leave the war room. There’s a slight hold, and then a slow fade out and then into...
