"Happy Endings T.V."
[Foster] Ok, Sal, after watching all the tapes you sent me ... I’ve found her.
Finally the shot fades into a running Shane, trying to keep up with Sally and Matt, who are powering ahead into a building. The sign above it say ‘Greenview Gymnasium’. It’s a school, of all places, but given it’s the weekend it’s all but abandoned. There’s only these three, a couple of burly-looking men standing at the door they are headed two and ... now that we’re inside a handful of athletic people standing around a wrestling ring.
[Sally] Wow, you worked fast...
[Foster] Well, you know me!
[Sally] ...for once.
The two head over to the small gathering, then start sizing everyone up. Foster races over to one of the women there. He takes her by the hand and pretty much presents her to Sally.
[Foster] Sally, this is Tina. Tina, this is Sally.
[Tina] You don’t need to introduce Sally Talfourd! I’m a huge fan, Sally. Really.
[Sally] Well, that’s just great! You’re in the wrestling business? *A nod from Tina*[/b] How much do you weigh? You’d be about five-six, five-seven? [/color]
[Tina] I’m five-foot-seven, and I last weighed in at 135 pounds. I’ve been working hard to stay around there.
[Sally] That’s excellent! Did Matt tell you what we’re doing here?
[Tina] Wrestling!?
[Sally] That’s exactly right! *Sally wraps an arm around Tina’s shoulder, working her to the edge of the ring*[/b] I need a wrestler, Tina. A wrestler that can help me practice. A wrestler that’s like my opponent this week. And Matt ... Matt watched just about every tape I could get my hands on of up-and-comers who worked the same as my opponent. You, Tina, fitted the bill perfectly. So, I was wondering ... could you help me? [/color]
An excited, almost bursting, Tina, looks at Sally with the widest eyes possible. Before we can even know the reaction, the scene fades away. While we’re holding on the blank screen, we can hear faint echoes of familiar voices.
Tighter Sally ...
... good anticipations ...
... excellent speed!
And, then, as the scene comes in, we find a much different Sally that we left. Gone is the suit and the perfect looks. Here she is, breathing deep, glistening from the sweat, looking a little worn out. She leans over the rope, looking down at Shane and Matt. in the background behind her, that small group gathers around Tina who is propping herself up in the corner.
[Foster] That was beautiful, Sally. Beautiful.
[Sally] She’s good. She’s really good.
[Foster] That’s ok. Because now you know what sort of heat you’re going to have to bring to the match!
[Sally] Matt, if she’s pushed me this hard and she’s not even been noticed by APW ... what’s Aubrey going to do? I mean, am I overestimating myself?
[Foster] Nah way! You’re going through a natural thing. It’s a big match. Belt on the line. It’s serious business! And you’re just having those normal jitters. You just need to settle yourself down. What happened when you won the title?
[Sally] Well, I won it?
[Foster] And it felt?
[Sally] It felt amazing. It took me a year to get back into the game, and Shane Borderland cost me the chance to get back on top. I fought harder and tougher than I ever had before to get into that chamber match, and then to win it. I deserved it, and that made it feel even better.
Wow, Sally just looked pretty darn serious then! Foster pulls himself up to stand on the mat, Sally still hangs over the rope, but doesn’t look at him.
[Foster] And what do you have to do to feel like that again?
[Sally] Well, I have to wi. I’ve got to beat Aubrey. It might be a defense, but it’s for the title. And I know that retaining is just as satisfying as winning.
[Foster] You’re damn right it’s just as satisfying. But it’s not just about the belt, is it?
[Sally] No. It’s about giving the fans what they want. They want the best wrestler to be the winner at the end of the night. They want the best matches and the best champions. They deserve that more than anything else. I might think I deserve the win, but what the fans deserve is what needs to happen. If that’s Aubrey ...
[Foster] Which it isn’t.
[Sally] But if it is ...
[Foster] Sally! Stop this doubting. Tell me what makes you good.
Sally frowns and thinks. What is it that makes her good? What is it that makes anyone good? APW is full of people, but what is it that separates each from the other?
[Sally] Well, I guess I’d start by saying that I wrestle. I wrestle better than most people, even I know that. I wrestle better than Aubrey, I know that too. I know that whatever I do in the ring is faster, tougher, better than her. I’ve been though the trials that she wishes she’s been through. This is her first big trial here on Asylum: Her first title match. But not just that, her first match against me. For a long time now, one of the initiations to become a legitimate contender here in Asylum has been to beat me. Look at the people who have: Terry Marvin, CJ Gates, Michael Callahan. They’ve all achieved, and achieved well. It’s time Aubrey go through the same test as the rest of them! If she’s good enough to beat me, then she deserves the title.
[Shane] But is she as good as you?
It’s the pause, the silent wait, that might have most people intrigued here. Because Sally doesn’t rush her answer.
[Sally] No. No she’s not. She’s not been through the fire I’ve been through. She’s not been through the big names here at APW and survived. I’ve done it and survived where others have tried and failed. And it’s that experience I draw on each and every time when I have a big match to win. To win the title in the first place is difficult enough. But I won it from the best that Asylum has. And I have no intention on losing it to someone who can only dream of doing that.
[Shane] She did win the North American Title though?
Matt shoots Shane a glare. Sally nods a contemplative nod. It’s true, Aubrey is an APW champion already. Granted, it’s the Meltdown title, and competition isn’t as ... testing as, say Asylum. But it’s still something that’s a credit to her name.
[Sally] That’s true. But she’s not coming in as champion. And she’s doubting herself already. She’s wondering if she can do it. She’s wondering if she has it in her. Me? I know i have it in me. I know that I can do it. I know I can beat someone of her skill. She hasn’t had to test herself against someone like me. I think back across the years I’ve been here ... I’ve faced a dozen Aubrey’s before. I’ve faced them ... and how many of them are still here? How many of them do you see holding titles? None. None at all. They’ve come and gone, and I’ve come and stayed. So yeah, she might have been a champion before, but here is the title that gives you a chance to stay here. To be known here. To become a name in APW. The North American Title ... yeah, that gets you noticed by the staff. But what I do? What my title does? It gets me noticed by the world.
That’s going to disappoint people. That the North American Title isn’t something that puts you on the map the same was as the World Title. But it’s the unfortunate truth. The levels of competition, they’re different. The prestige, it’s different. Every point of comparison is different. Now is Aubrey’s chance to see where she is really at. Her chance to see if she truly deserves a chance to be at the top of the main show.
[Foster] Good Sally. That’s right: You have the biggest title here in APW. You’re the one everyone is talking about. Aubrey needs this match more than you. I know we want it ... I know that the fans want it ... but she needs it.
[Sally] I need it Matt. I need it too.
[Foster] What? Why?
[Sally] Because I need to know. I need to know if I can beat Aubrey. I need to know if I can still call myself the best on Asylum. I’m surrounding myself with the best. I need to know if I can stand tall among them. This match ... this match, I need it to prove to everyone that I can stand with them. Strike, Saint, TJ ... do I deserve to be with them? Do I deserve to finish the year as champion? Do I deserve everything everyone is saying about me? I need this match, Matt, because I want it. Wanting and needing, they don’t have to be different. I want this match because the fans want it. I want this match because this is everything I stand for. I want this match because I like to test myself.
[Shane] But?
[Sally] But I need these matches for the exact same reason.
[Foster] Wow. That’s why you’re a champion, Sally. You think like a champion. You think the way you need to here. To get to the top, you can’t think like the rest. You need to think above them all. And that’s it. You want the hard matches because ...
[Sally] ...because I need them. I need the hard path to success because I want it too. I don’t want the easy way to the top - I need it. I set the example. I set the standard. And if everyone else did the same, then Asylum would be the better for it. That’s why Aubrey won’t get an easy path either. If she wants to be the top, she has to go through me. And I can promise you this. That’s not an easy path. Not an easy path at all.
[Tina] Sally! Do you want to go again?
Sally smiles, then starts to stand up.
[Sally] Yeah.
[Tina] If it’s too much ... or it’s too hard ... it’s ok. We can break for a while more?
Sally turns around as Foster jumps off the mat. Sally, attempting to fix her hair up, wanders over to Tina.
[Sally] Too hard? Hard’s just the way I like it.
Sally pats Tina on the shoulder, they space out, and then lock up. And on this action, it’s time to go. With just a handful of people around, they’re getting a preview of one half of a great match that’s coming this weekend! There’s a slight hold, and then a slow fade out and then into...
