As the audio starts, scenes from last Meltdown play as well.
“Last week… I made a mistake.”
Logan doesn’t even get to completely turn around before KJE swings the championship belt and catches him in the back of the head. He twists and falls onto his back, groaning in pain and moving a hand to the back of his head.
“Kaylyn gave me quite a shot with that replica North American championship. Maybe it jarred me a bit worse than I thought it had… I was planning to head out to the ring and watch the last couple of matches on Meltdown so I could see some more of the opposition in the ring before I was scheduled to face them at the Super Show. But that didn’t happen… I missed the Valo and Deruty rematch, and I see that Valo did get what he wanted heading into the title match. Then I missed the first half of the main event which would determine who would be the final participant in Super Show title match.”
Logan comes out with his title in hand and smiles as he makes his way down to the ring. Amy is screaming at him to accept her challenge and he just shakes her head.
“I got out there just in time for the end… although I didn’t realize that when I walked out there, carrying that replica belt that Kaylyn had hit me with. I was planning on giving it back to her. Amy had given me a shout out by that point and decided to jaw with me some more like an ingrate, as though I actually owed her anything. Kaylyn did the same… and then she spit on me.”
KJE smiles before rearing back and SPITTING right in LA’s face.
“That was definitely a first for me. I’ve never had that happen before. I think it was safe to say that I snapped for a few moments at least.”
Alexander gets furious and hops on the apron screaming at her. She slaps him and he winds up to swing at her.
“And that is what led to me crossing the line…”
KJE ducks and Logan’s right hand goes right into Amy’s mouth, sending her stumbling back.
“It’s not too often that I do something that I regret. But getting involved last week in that match, regardless of my intent, regardless of the rightness of my position based on what Kaylyn had done to me, was the wrong thing for me to do. Everything I’ve said and done up to this point in APW… especially in the last few weeks, now seems meaningless after what I did last week.”
“And now, I’m in the position that I have to face a vengeful Amy Zing. She demanded a match with me two weeks ago, and I said no, because I had no reason to face her in the ring. Even this week, I have no reason to face her. The reverse is not true though. Amy’s been spoiling for a fight, first with Aubrey and now with me. I knew she wouldn’t accept the fact that I turned her challenge down. Like a spoiled child she just demands, demands, and demands. Then in this case, Duvall decided to once again get involved and book the match giving her exactly what she wants again.”
“I guess it’s only fitting though. Amy gets her match, and she gets a second chance to earn a spot in the championship match at the Super Show. I’m not sure what to think heading into this match. It’s not what I had wanted and the circumstances are far from ideal… but I think that for Amy, it’s only fair. For me, it’s also a chance for me to correct my mistake and do the right thing. I know that my choices in the last month when they involve doing the right thing come under scrutiny from… well, everyone it seems, and no one agrees with my decisions either.”
“But I can’t let everyone else dictate what I should do. I’ll resolve this and set things right, regardless of the consequences for doing so. It’s all I can do now.”
We shift to a scene in the A.M.D.T.C., Logan’s school. We catch sight of Logan exiting a ring and a group of students around it break up into smaller groups and head off. Logan appears a bit winded as he walks away from the ring. He moves to a bench and grabs a towel to wipe the perspiration off his face then picks up a bottle of water from the bench and has a drink. A well built, light skinned, blonde haired man joins Logan there. We recognize him as Phil Jackson, who had appeared in similar capacity a month ago, and he speaks softly to Logan.
“Seems to be a bit of hostility coming off you this week Logan.”
Logan lowers the bottle and glances at Phil.
“It’s personal frustration mainly. I need to find myself a better outlet.”
“I’ll say. I think the students are ready to complain.”
Logan raises an eyebrow.
“I haven’t been that harsh, have I?”
“I wouldn’t say you’ve crossed a line. You might be toeing it though.”
“Huh… I probably should take a step back then.”
“That might be a good idea for you… and them. Cool off a bit and then come back when you get things sorted out.”
Logan starts to walk away from the training area and Phil follows along side him.
“It there anything you’d like to talk about in that regard?”
Logan shrugs.
“Perhaps there is. I’m just mad at myself mostly. It’s that moment where you feel that you’ve crossed one of your personal lines that you didn’t want to. I feel like I’ve sacrificed some of my morals and values with my actions last week. It’s overly dramatic, I know, but it’s how I feel when I look at it. I look like such an idiot in hindsight.”
He sighs.
“I’m sure there’s a way to fix it… and I know that no one is going to like it at all.”
Phil snorts.
“So what?”
Logan glances at him but keeps walking.
“So what if everyone else doesn’t approve? Does that mean you shouldn’t do it? Has your wrestling career suddenly become a popularity contest that you have to win? You can’t risk offending anyone now? I’ll let you know that if that’s your goal, you’re not doing a good job, because you’re getting booed a fair bit as of late, so I’m pretty sure your popularity is on the decline.”
“It’s not the public relations nightmare that worries me, because at this point, the crowds are going to hate me either way. I can do no right in their eyes, so I’m not even going to worry about that. It’s the backlash from the people that matter that concerns me. If I do what I’m considering, Aubrey is going to hate it, and she’ll try to stop me.”
Phil looks thoughtful.
“Huh… that might pose a bit of a problem.”
“Not really, but people will try desperately to exploit it. They can’t get to us any other way.”
“That seems to be the general image you two project.”
Logan narrows his eyes and looks away, clearly annoyed.
“That’s not an image. That’s the way it is. I just don’t want to add any undue strain, but I don’t think I’m in a good position either way.”
Phil shrugs slightly.
“I suppose you’ll just have to bite the bullet then. Hopefully things work out for you.”
“That and I can smooth things over with Aubrey too. It’ll work out in the end. It’s the rough patches between here and there that cause the problems.”
“I hear that. Go take some time and see what you think later. We’ll handle things here without you for now.”
Phil claps Logan on the shoulder. Logan nods to him in reply. The two then part ways and the scene fades out.
We open once again to a scene inside what is presumably a hotel room, most likely in Cleveland, Ohio. We see Logan Alexander lying back across the bed. A blinking light on the phone tells us that it is on, although Logan isn’t hold the receiver.
“How are you holding up?”
The voice comes from the phone apparently on speaker mode. Logan stares up at the ceiling.
“I don’t really know…”
“I feel pretty lousy about what happened last week. I know better than to do that sort of thing, but I couldn’t reign myself in once I was there at ringside. Should have just wiped my face off and waited for that smug little wench to get what was coming to her. Instead, I made an impulsive mistake that someone of my experience should never do.”
“You have no idea what kind of a blow this was to me…”
“Of course I do.”
The reply is delivered in a very matter-of-fact manner.
“I know you better than anyone else, even your trusted partner. I understand how things work in that head of yours Logan Alexander. I’ve spent years with you and that’s just one of the things I’ve come to understand about you.“
Logan looks over at the phone, he blows out a breath.
“You’re right… That is a bit presumptuous of me to think otherwise about you.”
“It’s just that I’m surrounded by people that think they understand what I’m going through. They chime in with their opinions about what I’m going through and how I should handle it, or how I’m just full of myself, or I’m making things up for attention. Amy Zing is a perfect example.”
He looks back up at the ceiling.
“That girl doesn’t know the first thing about honour or integrity, but she sees fit to lecture me about it. I wasn’t the one who ran out to blindside someone I didn’t like weeks ago in the middle of a match. Yet she stands now trying to look down upon me as though she has any sort of moral high ground to stand on.”
“She’s pathetic… but she wants to believe that she’s destined for some sort of greatness, which is why she attaches herself like a leech to the most high profile competitors by issuing challenges. She loudly proclaims that ‘I want to fight you, the champion, but not for the belt that I could never hope to carry. I want to fight you so that I can be in the spotlight for a few minutes and bask in the reflected glory that comes off of you so that I might know what it’s like for a moment to be someone meaningful in this industry.’”
“Ouch. Don’t you think that’s a little harsh?
Logan seems to consider this for a few moments, while considering his reply.
“Maybe but why should I sugar-coat the truth? She needs to hear it and actually pay attention rather then just running off at the mouth, because she thinks she has a clue.”
“Maybe Amy should take her own advice and shut her condescending mouth before it lands her in real trouble. I hit her by accident last week. The next time I hit her, it won’t be a mistake, and she’ll wish that she hadn’t gotten what she’d asked for.”
Logan sits up on the bed. He turns his head to glance towards the window.
“If everyone wants to stand in judgment of me… then let them. I’m quickly approaching the point where I will cease to care what people have to say. I’m just going to go out there and do what I have to do. And if everyone doesn’t like it, that’s just going to be too damn bad for them now isn’t it?”
The silence after that stretches out for several moments. We don’t hear a reply from the phone before the scene fades out once more.
We open once more, now to a shot from the balcony outside Logan’s hotel room. Logan is standing there in the late afternoon light staring out across the city.
“I’ve had mixed feelings about this match all week. I don’t like Amy Zing. I never have, I never will. She’s like one of those little yapping dogs that never shuts up and never goes away. It’s always there to annoy you relentlessly, letting you know that it’s still there despite the fact that you don’t care. But since it’s one of those little dogs that looks cute, no one ever seems to consider disciplining it, or smacking it and telling it to shut up, so the dog never learns any better.”
“Amy ran her mouth the way she does now, the exact same way when I knew of her in American Championship Wrestling. Surprise, surprise, she amounted to nothing there either unless it was as a footnote in the career of another wrestler. She was just someone who was there. If she ever did anything of note, it was after I was forcibly retired.”
“So here she is doing the same old thing once again. This week though, she at least has a legitimate grudge with me. And she is coming off a decent performance, outlasting two other competitors in that contender’s match. But what has she actually done of note other than that, and run around issuing challenges to people?”
He rolls his eyes.
“I don’t run around here doing that. You know how I’ve gained recognition here and everywhere else I’ve competed, Amy? I go out and I find a way to win. I find a way to succeed in the ring and people take notice. I get opportunities because I earn them and then I do what I can to make the most of them. It all comes from doing hard work, not from demanding matches against the champions.”
“There are quite a few people on this roster of competitors that I don’t like, some that I like even less than you like Aubrey, but I don’t run around screaming ‘Vendetta’ and challenging them to matches. I’ll resolve the issues I have with them in due time. I’d like nothing more than to put Kaylyn in her place… but rushing into it headlong like I did last week, or like you did when you interfered in the match between Aubrey and myself, only makes the situation worse.”
Logan closes his eyes, lowering his head. He stays like that for a little while, before turning to look at the camera.
“But now you’ve got yourself a golden opportunity don’t you Amy? You can beat me and get a shot at the North American championship this week. You have a chance to be relevant, but let’s face facts, you don’t measure up to the standards required to be a champion here. You’re mediocre at best. Now, I have lost to mediocre here before, but I’ve proven my worth since then and the person I lost to is no longer here. I may have lost, but in the end I became something and they became a memory.”
“So you might find a way to get by me but that isn’t going to mean anything when you get into the Super Show. You’re actually motivated this week and I’m not worried about you being a legitimate threat in the ring. Put you in the ring with four competent competitors and your chances of winning are infinitesimal. You’d just be the fifth wheel… filler material as usual.”
“But again, that’s if you get past me. I’m not just going to step aside since I’ll just get shoved back into the match like I was last week. So go ahead and show me what you’ve got. Try to prove to everyone and yourself that you deserve the opportunities you’ve been given. For me though, I have one simple goal tomorrow night…”
He moves away from the balcony railing and starts to head back inside.
“Do what’s right.”
The scene fades to black.
“Last week… I made a mistake.”
Logan doesn’t even get to completely turn around before KJE swings the championship belt and catches him in the back of the head. He twists and falls onto his back, groaning in pain and moving a hand to the back of his head.
