Happy to jump in here. Hopefully I can give you an idea on thing to work on in the new year.
The Good This was actually a very entertaining promo. There were some laughs here and there, the general premise of it was well conceived and overall it had a connection. You kept what would be an ‘out there’ idea connected to the match well enough that it didn’t seem ridiculous.
I’m a bit of a realist when it comes to promos (I’ll explain that in the next part), but this promo was entertaining enough to keep me interested despite there being things through it that would normally turn me off it. What am I saying? Well, I guess it’s that you have a good way of expressing yourself. I can see bits and pieces of other successful ‘entertainers’ that APW has had in the past, and they had considerable success. I’m thinking you will too.
I saw that you opted to go to OverDrive when you get promoted - that’s good. Your style is much more suited to that, considering you balance a healthy storyline with a considerable amount of trash talk. With a smaller word limit, I can’t see you being able to express yourself as well as this on Asylum.
Speaking of your style, it’s very good. There was a bit of an issue going from the storyline/character building stuff to the promo, but that’s only a minor thing. I’m not personally a fan of ‘BRB, going to cut a promo’ transitions. But that’s just me. And it’s a viable way to transition. I think as time goes on, you’ll have more match-relevant storyline and character building stuff, but in the mean time there’s some good material in there and a good display of talent.
What To Work On I’ll throw this out there, see what sticks. I’m a bit of a ‘promo realist’ (yeah, I think I made up that term in a feedback a while ago); I believe promos should be what you would expect to see on TV. With that said, all of this stuff ‘to work on’ needs to be taken with a grain of salt and keep that in mind.
I think your focused here on the storyline a bit too much. Given that, on OD, you’ll have another thousand words, when you get there use that extra limit for trash talk and specific match-stuff. But, given that you’re on Meltdown, you might want to shift that balance more towards match-commentary than character-building. We’re getting clear idea of who CK is, and I’m sure that the GMs on your show are noticing how good a storyline writer you are. Now is your chance to show off how good you are at writing your match-specific trash talk.
I mean, the only time I knew you were actually talking about your opponents and your match was the last section - two paragraphs, for the most part. There was a little here and there before this, but most of it was saved for the end and there just wasn’t that much. Of course, you’re coming in new and you don’t have the history yet. But here is where you get to assign yourself a role and place in APW, and interpret the events that are going on around you for the purpose that you want to achieve.
You lost a match? Why did you do it? Was the world conspiring against you? Were you injured? Was it your fault or someone else’s? Here is your chance to be defining what sort of heel you are in the business - not just the egotistical, womanising heel that you’ve already perfected well. Same thing if you won your match. Why did you win? Did you win because your opponents aren’t much chop compared to you? Are you going to put salt in the wounds that you leave on your last victory or move on without even acknowledging your past? Just take your time on Meltdown to set yourself up so that you hit the ground running when you’re called up.
Overall You’ll be right up there in no time. I reckon the style that you bring is very similar to people who are already dominating titles and putting on the most interesting storylines. Hang around here and everyone will be saying CK in no time. You’ve got so little to worry about ... it’s almost scary (considering you took a year’s break!).
