Niobe stood by the window inside of her house, staring out at the snow covered yard that she could see, eyes carefully traveling over the cars that were parked by the curb and the ones in the driveway. It was winter time and the holidays were just around the corner, Christmas being the following week. She had offered up to her family to host a little early holiday get together before she had to leave to New York for Meltdown. You couldn't blame her for wanting to stay in town for a while longer just to spend time with family and friends that she hadn't seen in like forever and after today she didn't know when she would see them all again. Such was the life that she lead and she wouldn't have it any other way at the moment. Christ she had more nieces and nephews that were born in her absence. More names, more faces to learn and memorize. Their little clan was getting bigger and bigger by the minute, she thought to herself, chuckling and shaking her head as she shifted on her feet in front of the window, completely shutting out the noise behind her. The smell of food drifted into her nose just then, reminding her to go and check on it and if anyone needed help in there. Most likely her mother would shoo her out of the kitchen and go tell her to mingle with her family, that everything was being taken care of.
"You need to relax Niobe, you've been home all week and you've done nothing but move around. If this is your last night here, then at least sit and have some fun, relax a little okay?"
Her mother was such a worry wart sometimes, even though Niobe was way past the age when she needed a second eye over her shoulder. But then again she was her mother and that's what good parents do long after their children grow up and move out, was worry. Her father was off in another room of the house, her little game room, if it could be called little with a few of her other uncles laughing and drinking and watching sports down there. She wrinkled her nose at that. Not that sports wasn't her thing to watch, she just would rather be drinking and watching other things other than sports. Scratch that all together, that's all that was on TV now was football or poker. Or if you were in the mood for it, one of those doomsday apocalypse shows that was on today. Wasn't the world supposed to come to a blazing end yesterday? She half expected to wake up the other day to find the rest the world gone completely bat shit crazy, looting, fires, and some asteroid ready to crash down onto earth. If that ever happened, no amount of yelling 'Bruce Willis save us' was going to do anything. But here they were, just a day after and no one was six feet under. Hah, take that doomsday sayers this world is in one piece on the day it was all supposed to go to hell.
Maybe humanity as a whole would wise up and do right.
She could hear laughter behind her as her relatives were laughing at a commercial on TV. They too were watching sports, as much as she tried to encourage other things. Her nieces and nephews were running around or poking at the Christmas tree sitting in her living room. She put it up earlier in the week when she arrived at home, just to make the whole place feel more Christmas-y if there was such a word. Plus she knew her mother would have a fit if her house didn't look like it did. It was just going to come down when she came back home again, whenever that was. She might have to send her mother over to clean it up, unfortunately. A shift off to her right caused Niobe to blink and turn, finding one of her younger cousins standing there, holding a baby in her arms.
"You look kind of out of it. You've been standing there for a while now, but luckily their so engrossed in sports and the prospect of food they haven't noticed yet. I need a favor from you though."
"No worries, I'm just thinking, the usual stuff. Don't hate me for it. But yeah, what do you need?"
"Could you watch Emily for me for a bit, I gotta run to the bathroom. Everyone is so engrossed in what they're doing, and you're the only one who's not and I know you wouldn't mind and it would give you a good chance to bond with Emily a little. Would you?"
"Yeah sure, I wouldn't mind."
Her cousin smiled, handing off the baby to her and saying a hurried thanks before dashing off to the bathroom. Emily, however, was more interested in grabbing at her dangling earrings than she was about bonding. Niobe ducked her head back and began talking to her, that silly baby talk that parents did. It made her wonder if these kids could really understand what they were saying at all. Her parents probably did it to her when she was a child. A part of her wished that she could of told them to stop and talk to her like a normal person. That's what made Niobe stop with the baby talk and adjust Emily in her arms so she could see out the window of the living room and see the tree as well.
"It's nice to be able to meet you, and see you for a short time. I don't know when I'll be back here after today to see any of this. What I do takes me all over the world, to places I thought I would never see in my life. I have a plane to catch tonight and a city in New York to invade. The Nightmare is traveling to Meltdown to be in a tag match with that tough looking John McBride as her partner. He's a pretty cool guy at least, I think so. Doesn't matter that he beat me once already. If I have him in my corner, I know I'm gonna win. They threw the newcomer into this match with William Black, isn't that funny? I think so. But I'm pretty sure that this whole conversation I'm having with you makes no sense. You are more interested in the earrings in my ears. But at least I can see your smiling face for a while."
The baby simply laughed, finding what she said funny and tried for her earrings again before her cousin came back to retrieve her. It was shortly after that that her mother yelled from the kitchen for everyone to come and eat. Niobe sighed and ran down to her game room to retrieve her father and her two uncles that were down there, telling them to get upstairs. As they all sat down at the table, and the kids at a smaller cards table someone had brought, she took the time to memorize the new faces she hadn't seen, making sure to take pictures after dinner was over with. People were going to be sad when she had to leave, but bigger and better things were calling for her. There was a plane ride, and a city to invade, and people who needed to be taught a lesson.
She leaned her head back on the seat she was in on the plane, later that evening, smirking at her own thoughts.
"So I'm gonna make this relatively short and sweet because this is the holidays and I'm in a good mood, which you should be thankful of. I would drop the whole Santa act too Christian because it's not working for you at all and it's a horrible way to pick up chicks. No girl's gonna wanna get with an ugly guy in a Santa suit. But besides your day job, which you suck at, we've got a match here to talk about. They've stuck me with John McBride as my partner. Now he may have beat me on the last show but they made the right choice I think sticking us together on this one. You and Black and KJE made your big statement last week by taking out AJP, Logan, and Zing. Bravo you got people to start talking about you, you turned heads. You made a statement by assaulting people way to go. Feel pretty proud of yourself? Well retaliation is going to be a bitch because somewhere, sometime it's going to be visited upon you, starting tonight. I'm taking the Sheriff with me and we're going to make sure that this night doesn't end up like one of your poorly shot ideas. You know what I'm talking about.
I hope William Black is a lot smarter than his tag partner, but after what happened last week with you two I don't have much hope. But take comfort that your plans will unravel. My partner and I will be your undoing and that's what it is. Your nightmare will come to life."
