7:52 PM Tuesday Night, River East Arena - Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
"HA! THEY MISSPELLED YOUR NAME AGAIN, CID!!!"
Cid Phoenix looked up at the marquis, that by now was sidescrolling "HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!" , missing that which his friend, Dan Bochner was so happy to point out. Already feeling the butterflies in his stomach at the thought of returning to in-ring action, Cid took several deep breaths to calm himself down. He waited for the marquis to do it's minute and a half long sidescroll of several events before seeing the APW rundown of the show, scheduled on the 7th of January. He watched as the horizontal digitized screenscrolled to the second match of the night, and groaned when he saw his name incorrectly spelled "Pheonix", much to the chagrin of Dan Bochner.
"Heh. I told you man! Why's that always happen to you??"
Cid Phoenix shook his head, as his friend, Dan - now working as a trainer in the APW's Farm League, chuckled his delight at the unintentional slight. It had been about one year (perhaps?), since Cid Phoenix last laced his boots and wrestled in an event hosted by the prestigious company. A number of injuries had sacked his momentum, a nagging neck and back injury that went unchecked for at least two years - were the reason for his last comeback being cut short. Finding himself being forced to hang up his gear and undergo surgery, followed by a long road to recovery and endless hours of rehab and retraining his body were just one of the problems he had faced. Legal problems with his ex-wife, Gina Slehr, followed by a very public breakup with his last girlfriend, fashionista Jem K, had rounded out the better part of a very long and dreary year of 2012. But despite it all, he remained optimistic. He still had his love for the sport of wrestling. That and his love of music.
"So, you sure you're up for a Fatal Four Way?"
The concern in Dan's voice made it apparent that the fed wasn't going to go easy on him.
After pondering for all of about three seconds, Cid gave his trademark crooked grin.
"I think the better question is if I've gotten rid of the ring rust. I almost killed myself attempting a huracanrana just two weeks ago. I just hope I don't trip coming out from behind the damned curtain!"
Both of them laughed. It had been a long time since they last spoke. The last time was when they'd come back as a team. They'd made quite the impact on the members of the Red Shield Mafia - JR Kingston & Young Mannie, attacking them in a parking lot. They'd put Kingston's head through the passenger's side window of a car and powerbombed Mannie through it's front windshield..
"Shit.", said Phoenix, suddenly remembering.
"What?", asked Dan curiously.
"Mannie's gonna be at the Meltdown Show."
"Yeesh..", said Dan shaking his head. ", You think he's still got a grudge?"
"Well, we DID put him through the front windshield of a car, Dan!"
"Take it easy, Cid! That was a year ago. I'm sure he's over it by now. Besides, you have to concentrate on your three opponents! Let's do a quick rundown, shall we?"
Cid took a deep breath, then exhaled. He then nodded calmly.
"Okay."
Dan looked up at the marquis..
"Matt Ward."
"Faced him before. He's tough but I've been able to get past him. Not saying that it'll be easy with two others in the match, but I'm familiar with his wrestling style."
"Good..", said Dan. ", Familiarity with an opponent can greatly help in a match like this. How about Alexis? And what about this Hannah Lee Dreams?"
Cid's brow furrowed. He shook his head.
"I know of Alexis, but this Hannah Lee - I'm drawing a blank. Hell, like I said, I've been out of the loop for awhile."
Dan pat his friend on the back, offering a warm smile as he did so.
"Well, buddy. The best thing to do is to remain optimistic. You're good enough to win this match. Besides, what could possibly go wrong?
Cid narrowed his eyes at Dan's remark.
"With Manny in the building? I shudder to think.."
"Chin up, Cid!"
"You know I really hate it when you say that, Dan!"
"Think of it this way, Cid.. It's 2013, and you're STILL around!"
"You really ARE an a-hole, Dan."
"Thanks. I try.."
The two walked off into the distance, as the marquis continued to radiate brightly in the Canadian night sky..
The End..
