The door swings open and Roy Speede comes trudging into the room, an infuriated look beaming strongly across his face as he steps into the hotel room. He has tape around his wrist and a bag of ice resting in the other, the two serving as a compress that adorns the back of his head where it meets his neck. As he trudges across the room, the door closes by itself, and his slow pace leads to him eventually making his way around to bed, where he sits and then lays down without taking so much as a second thought about it.
Only a few short moments, maybe a full minute pass before the door swings open again, and not one but two figures come striding, much quicker and less restricted, into the room. Approaching him on the bed, his best friend Katie and his girlfriend Meghan make their way around the bed and come face to face with him, lying on his side with his taped hand now in command of the bag of ice, which has already begun to sag from the melted water inside.
Katie Walker: “You know, it may not me such a good idea to use your sore wrist to hold the ice.”
Roy Speede: “I guess you’re right. But to tell the truth, I’m not incredibly worried about it. I mean, sure, I’m a bit sore, but it doesn’t mean I’m not going to keep the pressure off of it. It’s not even a real sprain!”
Meghan Morrison: “Real sprain or not, she’s right, babe. Putting a ton of pressure on it could get it sprained, and even if it doesn’t it means it’ll take longer to get feeling better.”
Roy Speede: “Look, the APW medical examiners said I wasn’t at risk for anything severe to happen to me right now, and even after that performance, I’m sure I’ll be fine.”
Meghan Morrison: “Hey, you guys got the win. That’s what’s important, right?”
Roy Speede: “I guess so. But now it’s going to be back across the pond to Liverpool in just a couple short days for another Overdrive match.”
Katie Walker: “All the more reason to make sure your wrist is okay before you leave, Roy. I don’t want you to be uncomfortable the entire flight; lord knows how miserable that’d be.”
Meghan Morrison: “And I don’t want you to have to find out, either.”
Roy Speede: “I’m serious, guys. Don’t worry about it. I’m going to be just fine, and by the time my next match comes around, I’ll be back at a hundred percent, guaranteed. I’m not going to just let this one slide because I’m not feeling the best after a tag team match.”
Meghan Morrison: “It doesn’t matter what kind of match it is. The point is that you’ve got tape on your wrist, so obviously you’re not feeling the best right now. Yet you insist on using it, and that concerns me.”
Roy Speede: “I’m serious, baby! It shouldn’t worry you! Nor should it worry you, Katie. I’ll be fine, no questions asked, and when I set foot in the ring, my opponent won’t know what hit him!”
Katie Walker: “Yes, but let’s just say you end up sleeping on that wrist of yours wrong tonight, okay? And now, let’s say that it does end up suffering a mild sprain in your sleep because of the tension you’re putting on it through sleeping in an awkward position, alright? Now, that mild sprain leaves your wrist in wraps until just before your match, hypothetically of course. Delikado will notice that, and he will use it to his advantage. You’re not facing an idiot.”
Roy Speede: “It wouldn’t matter if I was facing an idiot or not. It seems like common practice around here to target the arms early in a match, and whether something happens or not, of course I’m going to have a bit more difficulty with my wrist like this. Doesn’t mean a thing.”
Meghan Morrison: “Oh, but that’s where you’re wrong, Roy. It does mean a thing, and in fact, it means quite a bit. It means that you’re not fully healthy, and if you’re not fully healthy, it gives any opponent, smart or not, an advantage because it means that whether you like it or not you’ll end up favoring that wrist.”
Roy Speede: “I’m not wrong, Megs! I know what I’m doing. I’m going to fall asleep tonight, and when I wake up in the morning my wrist will feel a lot better. I’ll pack my bags early, and then help you two pack yours, and then I’ll drop you two off at the front door of the airport. I’ll drive the rental car back to the lot, drop off the keys, and walk the quarter mile or however far it is back to the airport, and hug the two of you goodbye before watching you board your plane. From there, it’ll be a short wait until I’m on a plain back to jolly old England, and I’ll be on the way to picking up my first victory on Overdrive.”
Meghan Morrison: “Should’ve been your second Overdrive victory.”
Roy Speede: “Okay, so Kurt Noble found a way to avoid the brunt of the hit on a Silver Bullet. I’ll commend him on that; I definitely will. Not many people could take one of those and end up winning the match, and I’ll give Kurt credit. I underestimated him, and I paid the price. It doesn’t mean a thing as far as the future, other than obviously I’m going to be keeping an eye on that man and challenge him to a rematch once I win this week and get my guaranteed spot on the Overdrive roster now and permanently.”
Katie Walker: “Are you so sure that’s really the best idea? I mean, sure you pushed him to his limit and made things pretty hard on him, but does that really mean you’re going to want to face him a second time?”
Roy Speede: “Absolutely, Katie. Absolutely. I pushed him to his limit, and I pushed myself to my limit, and I’m pushing that limit further beyond the norm each and every day, and my talent will flourish in the future while his deteriorates.”
Meghan Morrison: “Just don’t get too cocky about it, okay? The last thing we need is for you to get hurt because you’re getting a big head and someone else who thought you took it too far came in and took it into their own hands to get you to be quiet.”
Katie Walker: “Him? Quiet? Never!”
The girls laugh, and Roy sighs, shaking his head before removing the bag of ice. He winces slightly and then holds it up.
Roy Speede: “Could one of you dump this for me please? I’m done with it. It’s melted and just occupying extra space in here right now. I’m fine without it.”
Katie Walker: “Sure, I’ve got it.”
Katie takes the bag and walks into the bathroom, where the dribble of the water into the sink can be heard before for some time.
CLACK! CLACK! CLACK!
The ice drops into the sink now too, and a moment later, Katie comes walking back out of the bathroom and tosses the empty bag into the trash can. Meghan looks up at her and then shakes her head as she starts laughing.
Meghan Morrison: “What was that, Katie? It sounded like you were... um...”
Katie Walker: “Like I was what?”
Roy Speede: “Don’t start this! Please, I’m asking you nicely, don’t start this!”
Katie Walker: “Now hold on just a minute, Roy... It sounded like I was doing what, Meghan?”
Katie grins widely and tilts her head slightly to the side as she walks over. Roy stands up, putting his arms between the two, one into Katie’s waist just below the bust, and the other at Meghan’s in the same area.
Roy Speede: “Don’t. Do. It.”
Meghan Morrison: “It sounded like you were using the bathroom! And you didn’t even wash your hands. That’s disgusting!”
Katie’s eyes go wide and she lunges forward, her waist pushing against Roy’s bad wrist. Meghan dives backwards onto the bed trying to get away, but Katie catches her by the foot, and pulls her back, and pins her to the second bed. Roy leans over, trying to separate them, but Katie’s hands move to Meghan’s throat and she tries to choke her. Roy grabs Katie by the arms and pulls her off, and the force of the movement sends them both tumbling over onto the other bed. Meghan sits up.
Meghan Morrison: “Get your hands off of him, Katie! He’s mine!’
She grabs Katie by the leg and starts pulling her off when Roy rolls Katie over, putting himself between them, and glares at them both, first Meghan then Katie.
Roy Speede: “THAT’S ENOUGH! Why is it that you two are fighting every time I happen to show up? You two were getting along just fine when you walked in here, and it wasn’t until I asked Katie to do me a favor that you two started arguing. What the heck is going on here?”
Meghan Morrison: “Katie’s in love with you and wants to carry your babies!”
Katie Walker: “I am not!”
Roy Speede: “Whoa, whoa, whoa, what the hell was that, Megs?”
Meghan Morrison: “The truth.”
Katie Walker: “No it’s not! You’re like a brother to me, Roy! I don’t want that!”
Meghan Morrison: “Do to.”
Katie Walker: “Do not!”
Meghan Morrison: “To.”
Katie Walker: “Not!”
Meghan Morrison: “To!”
Roy Speede: “Shut up! Both of you be quiet!”
Roy takes a deep breath, shaking his head.
Roy Speede: “Look, I don’t care whether or not you like me like that, Katie. I believe you when you say you don’t, and if you do, so be it. I’m not into you like that, and you said it yourself that we’re like siblings. You’re a good friend to me, but I don’t want to sleep with you. It would be awkward beyond belief, and I don’t want to screw things up.
Meghan, you need to chill. You’re more protective of me than a bear protecting her cubs, and I’m just your boyfriend. It’s not like I’m your fiancé, and it’s not like I’m your husband; we’re just boyfriend and girlfriend, and it’s this level of social immaturity that makes me believe you’re not ready for us to be anything more. I love you, and I don’t want this relationship to go to waste, but seriously, you need to stop worrying that my best friend is trying to steal me away. She’s not, and even if she were, I’m with you, and that’s how it is. No offense, Katie.”
Katie Walker: “None taken.”
Meghan Morrison: “It’s not at all what this is about, Roy! I get it; we’re not getting married, that’s fine, whatever! I don’t even care! I just want you to stop flirting with your best friend like a couple falling in love with one another on a high school television drama!”
Katie Walker: “Wait, we’re what?”
Meghan Morrison: “You heard me, Katie. I said it, and I meant it. You two flirt more openly than any ‘just friends’ I’ve ever seen, and it’s sickening, especially since I’m dating him!”
Roy Speede: “We’re not flirting! We were never flirting! Gees, when did that even come up in this conversation? I asked her to do me a favor, and you made a joke about it sounding like she was using the toilet, and then you two were at each other’s throats again. I didn’t see any flirting going on, and I don’t get what you’re implying here. As far as I can tell, you two are fighting just like sisters, and- oh my god I see what you’re getting at here.”
He turns and looks at Katie.
Katie Walker: “What?”
Meghan looks at Katie too now.
Katie Walker: “No, seriously, what’s going on? I didn’t do anything!”
Silence.
Katie Walker: “Seriously, guys, you’re starting to freak me out. I’m not... I mean, I don’t... What do you want me to say?”
Roy Speede: “Tell the truth, Katie. What is going on between you and Meghan?”
Katie Walker: “Nothing! I’m just bugged by the fact that she’s sitting around talking shit about me and thinking she can get away with it just because she’s dating my best friend! If you don’t believe me, whatever, but it’s the truth!”
Roy Speede: “Oh, no, I can believe it. I can easily believe it.”
Meghan Morrison: “Whose side are you even on in this, Roy?”
Katie Walker: “Yeah, I’m kinda curious about that, myself, Meghan. Good question... Roy?”
Roy Speede: “Look, I’m not going to choose between my best friend and my girlfriend in an argument that doesn’t even seem to have a real point. I’m not on anybody’s side here. I just want you two to get along and stop fighting about this and that and every little thing. Katie, learn to take a joke. Meghan, tone it down a little bit and stop trying to make her mad. Okay?”
The two girls look at each other and then back at Roy and nod in agreement.
Meghan Morrison: “Okay, Roy. I think that’s acceptable.”
Katie Walker: “Yeah, I understand what you’re trying to do here. Thanks.”
Roy Speede: “Don’t thank me for it. Just do as I ask, please.”
Katie Walker: “Will do.”
Meghan Morrison: “We both will, so long as blondie over there doesn’t- I mean...”
Katie Walker: “What did you call me?”
Roy Speede: “Alright, since you only seem to fight in my presence, I want you two to do me one more thing. Go out into the hallway, and talk. Just sit there and talk. I don’t care how long it takes, I just want you two to prove to me that you two can get along, so go out there, work it out, and until you two figure it out and can get along when I’m around, I don’t’ want to hear a word from either of you, understand me?”
Katie Walker: “Alright...”
Meghan sighs.
Meghan Morrison: “Whatever.”
Roy Speede: “No, not whatever. Do it.”
Katie Walker: “But-“
Roy Speede: “No buts. Not another word. From either of you. Just do it.”
The girls get up without so much as another word, just like Roy asked, and proceed to the door. Katie opens it and Meghan walks out into the hall first, and then Katie follows, and the door swings almost completely shut, propped open only by the little ‘do not disturb’ card that Katie so cleverly slid into the lock to keep it from closing the two both out of the room.
Roy Speede: “Girls... Can’t live without ‘em, and sometimes I just don’t know what to do with ‘em. Especially when they get like that...”
He sighs and looks back over at the cameraman.
Roy Speede: “Alright, so let’s get this thing started if we can at all help it, and do this quick so I don’t get interrupted again. First things first, Kurt Noble, if you’re watching this, congratulations. You defeated me like you said you would, and I’ll give you credit, you pushed me to my limit and then passed that limit and beat me, and no questions asked you were the better man that night. I can’t deny it, nor will I try to argue that I was having an off night. Sure, I think- no... I know I could’ve done better, but I can’t say I’m disappointed after that excellent match. I was really just getting my feet wet as far as stepping up to the main show, an my first match on Overdrive being against you was an honor that I won’t forget...
Because sooner or later, I want my rematch. As I said, I could’ve and should’ve done better, and after a few mistakes and a few errors on my part, you got the better of me, and I can’t deny it any. You pulled off an impressive victory, and there’s no argument that you didn’t coming from me after that. But there is a passion burning inside me for this business, and every part of me wants a rematch against you to prove that you just got lucky, whether that’s even an accurate statement or not. I’m sure it’ll come, and if not, I’ll make it happen, but for now, congratulations. I’ve got bigger fish to fry and a future on Overdrive to look forward to.
I’ve got a future to look forward to that starts with the one and only Delikado, a man who I’ve faced as part of the tag team titles tournament in the past, and a man who I’m pleased to be able to say that if, no, when he gets pinned to the mat for the three count at my hand for the second time out of two that we’ve ever been in the same match, I’ll be given an official contract as a part of Overdrive, and I will finally be off that crappy Meltdown production that Duvall thinks he’s making improvements on permanently, or at least, until I’m main eventing pay-per-views and wrestlers from all around come to challenge me to matches that for some reasons the people in charge of Action Packed Wrestling never seem to want to put on the main brands, much less on Pay-Per-Views.
And that’s just a delight for me because I’ve beaten him once, and I can beat him again. I know, I know, he’s going to try to say that me beating him was a lucky break, and while I can’t deny that I did have a bit of luck on my side, it was me who practically fought a handicap match against Delikado and his tag team partner, Evan Envi, while letting my own tag team partner stand on the apron to provide moral support in an attempt to keep him fresh and in a good mindset for another match he fought later in the evening.
To put it in perspective, I beat both of them by myself, and now he doesn’t even have the numbers game at his advantage.
He’s in trouble.
This time, there’s no shot at a title belt on the line in the match, and for him, this is just another match; for me, my chance to become a permanent member of the Overdrive roster is what drives me in this match, and if anyone stops to think for a single second that I’m going to let this one slide right out of my grasp over my own pride and my own level of arrogance that rivals that of the World Champion, and let that get the better of me, they would be sadly mistaken. This match could very easily change my career and make or break my future in this company, and it’s all business for me because I refuse to let this one get away from me.
I’ve said before that 2013 is going to be my year, and I meant it. Sure, it didn’t start out the best after losing to Kurt Noble, but I’m not going to dwell on it; I learned a hell of a lot from my match against that man, and I’m going to utilize every last bit of that knowledge against a man that I’ve faced before. Because while one learns a lot more from a match, or from anything for that matter, when they lose, this isn’t about learning a lot for me. Facing Delikado is about winning, and it’s about earning my spot on the Overdrive roster as a permanent member of the group, and developing a legacy that any man could look up to and say they’d be proud to have lived the same.
Now, I know, I’m not exactly facing the dumbest man on the roster, and I understand that some consider him somewhat of an ‘intellectual’ individual, so to speak, but having some smarts is only half the battle in the ring, and the rest of it lies in an aspect of competition where I’m not evenly matched with, but far exceed Delikado in. He’s smart, but he doesn’t have the strength, speed, skill, and sheer talent that I have. I question whether he ever did, and to answer my own question, I just simply don’t buy it.
He isn’t talented enough to defeat me in the ring, and if beating him and Envi didn’t prove it, I’d be more than happy to do it all over again this Thursday on Overdrive, and when I do, I’ll be the newest addition to the Overdrive roster. Sure, it’s a scary thought to realize my dream of becoming a star in one of the biggest promotions in all of professional wrestling, and going to Overdrive within three months of signing with Action Packed Wrestling, without developing my skills a bit more on Meltdown and learning more about the competitive rosters of all three shows isn’t exactly the brightest idea for me; but would I really even consider passing it up?
No, I’m not going to pass up that opportunity. I’m going to cease it, I’m going to take control with it, I’m going to run with it, and I’m going to become glorified through it, through facing opponents like Delikado, opponents like Kurt Noble, and even more, opponents who are in the primes of their careers like Mark Mania and A. C. Smith and Terry Marvin. It’s not the easiest path, but it will sure as hell make me a much better wrestler, and will end up with me having a much more impressive legacy when I can say that I dethroned Mark Mania or Terry Marvin, or that I made Michael Lively tap out, or what have you.
I know I’ve said this before, but I’m still just a young gun in this business. I’m not the most prolific talent this company has or will ever see, and I know that, but I’m still developing and honing my skills, and I plan on one day being the best this company has, and as far as it goes, competing on Overdrive and giving management a reason to book me on the best show it has to offer against the most difficult opponents it can muster up for me to face is what will bring out the best in me, because against names like Branden Harvey and Mr. Dangerous, where am I really going to go in this company?
Nowhere.
Facing big names like Delikado and Kurt Noble every week is what’s going to make my career Hall of Fame worthy, and it’s what will end up being my legacy, the stories I’ll one day sit down in an old rocking chair and tell my grandchildren when I grow old and retire from this profession, and I’ll be able to look back and say, ‘I did it. I was one of the best.’ Nobody can get there by dealing with names like you’ll find on Meltdown these days; Overdrive is where it’s at, and Overdrive is where you make a name for yourself, and I’m here to do just that.
And I don’t plan on leaving the best product this company produces any time soon; I’ll be here on a weekly basis after I defeat Delikado, and I’ll have the opportunity to truly excel and show this company that my tag team exploits are not all I’m capable of accomplishing around here. So let this be a message to everyone, from top to bottom, Terry Marvin to Irver Famori and Mac Bane, and especially to my opponent this week, Delikado. This is only the first page in the novel that will be the wrestling career of Roy Speede, and my success in this company will only be just starting come Thursday. You’ll all soon realize just how good I am, and Delikado will be just the first to fall... You’ll see... You’ll all see...
And nobody will ever forget the name Roy Speede.”
Cut to black.
Only a few short moments, maybe a full minute pass before the door swings open again, and not one but two figures come striding, much quicker and less restricted, into the room.
