The Pride of North America
♠♠♠
A few hours withdrawn from Monday Night Meltdown and Christian Kane is a happy man for a few very obvious reasons. He beat the clock against almost all odds and in less than a week he heads to London, England to battle against Logan Alexander, the North American champion for that exact title. Not only that but Kane is also booked in the annual Survive and Conquer match, his first one ever. While you would expect Kane to indeed be smiling about the situation he currently finds himself in as he drives to his hotel from the Confederation Arena in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Canadian Sensation is far from smiling. Slamming on the brakes of his rather luxurious rental car to refrain from speeding through a red light Kane turns to his phone, docking it on the dashboard and tapping a few buttons before we hear the phone begin to ring out to another. Tapping his finger on steering wheel the young Canadian star seems irritated, whether that’s due to the fact he’s had to stop or a culmination of a lot of things is indeed a mystery, one that may be answered as whoever’s on the other line picks up the phone.
?: Christian Kane. What can I do for you?
Kane: Talbot. Glad you picked up, it’s late, I know.
The man he’s calling his Samuel Talbot, Christian Kane’s lawyer, his accountant and to a lesser extent his agent. He is by all accounts Christian Kane’s ‘man in the suit’ and Samuel pauses for a second before responding.
Talbot: It’s not late at all, I’m in LA right now.
Kane: Ugh. What is with me? Of course.
He slaps his head, clearly the last few weeks has taken a toll on him. He hasn’t been on Pacific Time for quite a while now, spending the past few weeks at his home in Toronto with his girlfriend. But how could he forget something as simple as that? Whatever. Christian shakes it off as he continues.
Kane: Well anyway, I need you to get on the phone with Duvall or Sienna, whichever one...although, Duvall preferably and get them to pull me from the Survive and Conquer match. I’m not wrestling twice in one night. No way.
So that’s it. Christian Kane wants to pull out of the Survive and Conquer match. Backing down? Maybe, but of course Kane has an excuse lined up, straight away. He doesn’t like to use them, and in his APW career he hasn’t had many chances to do so, but nonetheless...
Talbot: I’ll get on that right away, Kane. Any reason why you’d rather Duvall?
He rolls his eyes as he turns onto another street and begins to speed down it.
Kane: I have this feeling that Sienna might have it in for me. Not so much so that she’d screw me over, not at all, it’s just that the girl she backed to win the Beat the Clock challenge over me failed, so I doubt she’s willing to do me many favours if any at all. Duvall on the other hand has back 100% of the way. He knows a star when he sees it and he’s seen a star in me. Just like you did.
It’s true. Being on Christian Kane’s payroll is quite significant, and the opportunities that come from being associated so closely with the APW wrestler is almost as beneficial as the amount wired into Talbot’s bank account each month.
Talbot: You’re right there. So you’re just not up to wrestle two matches in one night, then? I’ve seen that Logan is. He hasn’t pulled out yet.
Kane: And if he has his mind set on the Survive and Conquer match ahead of ours then he will fail and fail miserably. For the next week I’ll be training every day to get myself into amazing shape, more so than I already am and I will embarrass that joke of a champion. You know me, Sam, you know how much damage I can do, how much pain I can cause and you know how dominant I can be. Survive and Conquer will be one of those nights and I will not risk serious injury in that circus of a match only an hour removed from the single most important match of my Action Packed Wrestling career to date. That simply won't happen.
Stopping at another red light Christian takes the time to look out of the window, losing himself in his own thoughts for a moment before Talbot replies with a simple “mmhm” of agreement, snapping him out of the miniscule trance he found himself in. With that he carries on defending his decision to drop out of the Survive and Conquer match.
Kane: I wasn’t given this opportunity and you know that Sam. Duvall can’t afford to because like I said last week that’ll all it take for someone to cry about unfair bias, then where’d I be, eh? Simply put I made this opportunity for myself just like I always have and I’ll be damned if I have to also keep tabs on another match in the same night, never mind the calibre of it.
Talbot: You think you’ll be too distracted if you have to think about the Survive and Conquer match? You don’t think you can handle the pressure of being in it and wrestling for a title in the same night? Or is it a focus issue. I don’t mean to press, I’d just like to know. You’re my client so I feel as if it’s my duty, I don’t want you to feel as if I’ve left you out in the cold.
Christian smiles ever so slightly to himself, he knows that Samuel has his best interests at heart and that’s why their business relationship is as beneficial as it is.
Kane: I understand, and to answer your question no. Pressure doesn’t get to me. Not anymore. I’ll admit when I was younger, say four years ago, maybe even three I’d be freaking about a night like Survive and Conquer but since then I’ve matured, and more importantly I’ve been successful. No longer am I the druggie, choke artist, no shower I once was. I’m the Canadian Sensation, Samuel. APW has not seen the best of me yet and you know it. Focus wise? I’m fine, I’ve wrestled twice in one night before, winning a number one contenders match and the title I won the contendership for in the same night. Winning a semi-final and a final of a tournament in the same night. Even if it was back in 2011 both of those examples were only a few months apart. You weren’t with me then, Sam, but I’m sure you know all of this already. My legend precedes me.
Talbot: Maybe so, Christian, maybe so - but in APW it doesn’t.
Kane nods, agreeing with his agent’s words...he hasn’t become a legend, not yet anyway. Winning the North American title at Survive and Conquer will definitely be a step in the right direction, however.
Kane: It will. Very soon it will do. But wrestling twice in the same night, the second match being one of the biggest in the wrestling industry, not just in size but in stature...? It’s just not logical. I’m not going to take years off my body just to get my name out there. I’m already a part of Action Packed Wrestling. I’m on the roster...I don’t need it. I don’t need to win that match to affirm that I’m the best wrestler in the world. I already think that. I already know that, Talbot.
Talbot: That’s understandable. I have to go anyway, got a meeting to head to, I’ll remember to put that call in for you though, and if I don’t speak to you before Sunday then good luck and give him hell.
Kane: Luck’s for losers, Samuel. We’ve been through this. Talk soon.
Almost impeccably timed, Kane hangs up the phone and within a minute is at his hotel. Undocking the phone and sliding it into his pocket, Christian exits the car and throws the keys to a valet as he confidently struts into the hotel. He has a good feeling about this week...a very good feeling.
♠♠♠
We now cut to well furnished area, where we see a beautifully finished matte black marble flooring, a hip height glass stand and on the wall an extremely large Survive and Conquer banner, advertising the PPV emanating from London, England in just a few days time. Going back to the glass stand however we notice something on it, a colourful looking cube, in actual fact. As the camera slowly zooms in closer we begin to recognize it to be a Rubik’s cube! After focusing on the cube for a few seconds a hand suddenly picks it up, forcing the camera to zoom out which reveals the Canadian Sensation, Christian Kane. The challenger to Logan Alexander’s North American Championship on Sunday night at Survive and Conquer. Looking down at the cube, Kane feeds it between his hands for a moment before glancing up to the camera, looking directly down the lens as he talks.
Kane: So it’s come to this, Logan, eh? Me versus you...for a title that don’t particularly hold near to your heart at all, despite it’s position...draped over your shoulder. Let’s not stay shy of the truth here, Logan...we knew it would come to this, didn’t we? In that tag team match when you stood across the ring from me you knew. You knew I’d be gunning for you. Not only because I despise you and your tag team partner...but because you have something that I want. And Christian always gets what he wants. It’s been that way ever since I was a child, but believe me Logan nothing has ever been given to me. No opportunities have ever been granted to me because the industry today is nothing more than a fickle popularity contest, and thankfully I’m not popular with these...people. I have scratched and clawed for everything I’ve achieved in my life, in my career and most importantly in this company. You just love to bring up the fact that I am supported by Duvall and Harrison but I dare you to prove they’ve ever favoured me in a public domain, because the fact of the matter is that as much as you want to be able to, you can’t. You can’t, so instead you’ll complain, spew that inane ‘mom and dad’ nonsense which you and Aubrey seem to love and that you done. That soothes your soul.
Christian places the cube back onto the stand before continuing, readjusting his sleeveless navy blue t-shirt before doing so.
Kane: I was an afterthought, Logan. Can you believe that? An afterthought. Everyone expected the Finnish Phenom to beat the clock, hell, Sienna Harrison expected and supported Robina Hood to beat the clock, but instead I did, Logan. I did. I beat the clock and a bead of sweat ran down your forehead as you watched on backstage. You stared at the monitor and in it you saw your future, old man. You saw Sunday night, when I will...and I promise you...will defeat you for your North American title. On this same night a hundred men and women from around the world including you will compete to become the Survive and Conquer Champion, and they say that’s a fantastic way to get yourself heard. Known. That’s how to become a star, they say. Logan, you know me almost too well and you’ve said it yourself...I’m no one’s fool. I don’t care about what ‘they’ say. I don’t care about what anyone says, in London, England I’ll become a star by taking your title from you. That’s my stepping stone to greatness in APW.
He stops and begins to run his hand along his lower torso.
Kane: This is where the North American title belongs. Here! Around my waist. You’re the tag team champion, that’s fantastic, but for you to publicly admit that the only reason you defend the North American title is to spite others is...shameful. Just like last week it baffles me why people would choose to cheer someone who thinks like that over someone like me. I want your title Logan Alexander, I want it so bad. Every Meltdown that I’ve ever been on has led to this moment. Everything that has ever happened on Meltdown...has led to this moment and I refuse, I outright REFUSE to be another soul that’s a part of your spiteful realm. That can’t happen. It won’t happen and I will give Meltdown a North American champion to be proud of. I’ll give Alexander Duvall and Sienna Harrison a North American champion to be proud of! Because everyone with a brain knows it’s not you. That title’s gleam, it’s prestige is WASTED on you. Great men like Evan Envi once held this championship and for you to even think for one second that your name belongs in the presence of his is not only a shame, but pitiful and insulting. I, unlike you am the Canadian Sensation, the Pride of North America and it’s about time I restored prestige to that title. To give Meltdown a champion who wants to be their champion. I pulled out of the Survive and Conquer match so I can become a champion. Failure isn’t an option. It’s never an option and never will be, and I don’t plan on leaving the UK empty handed. But before I get myself much too fired up before I fly to London and take what’s rightfully mine...let’s get the wheels turning here...
Taking the Rubik’s cube with one hand, he calls over someone that seems to be a production crew member with a gesture and hands him the cube.
Kane: Turn away from me and scramble this Rubik’s cube up.
Sending the crew member away he looks back at the camera, an assured, confident air about him as always.
Kane: Unlike Donald Deruty I respect your talent, Logan. We’ve faced off before in that tag team match and you did defeat Kaylyn...and maybe, as much as I hate to admit it I made a terrible mistake tagging her in in that situation, but the past is the past and I’m looking forward to the future. I kicked you right in the jaw and rendered your unconscious, Alexander. Boom. Blink and you’re out, just like you said. Nobody in this company has a superkick as vicious as mine and that’s a fact. I train day in and day out to have the reassurance that if I hit it cleanly once...the match is over. It’s one of the several aces I have up my sleeve, but the only one that you can see. The only one that you know. But I stand here now, recording this for you and I wonder...I dunno...how much did that superkick get in your head? That SSK. It knocked you out cold Logan. Out cold...and if I were to hit it this Sunday...damn.
He smiles as he looks around at the crew, then back to the camera once more.
Kane: That’s a damn fine feeling.
Christian laughs, he can’t help but smile in a situation. He may be getting ahead of himself, but that’s Christian Kane, he always will get ahead of himself and there’s not much anyone can do to change that. The production crew members comes back on set momentarily, handing Kane the Rubik’s cube.
Kane: Ah yes...the Rubik’s cube.
He takes it, holding it up to the camera for the world to see.
Kane: The Rubik’s cube...the world's best selling puzzle of all time. Now you along with the countless number of ‘fans’ watching this on the APW website may be wondering just what the hell I’m doing with a Rubik’s cube...well, unlike your silly little game show...this is a well thought out analogy.
The Canadian Sensation begins to solve the cube as he talks.
Kane: See Logan...the trick to the Rubik’s cube is that while it appears different all the time...in actual fact...it’s not different at all. Because all you have to do...is memorize a few algorithms. You just have to go through the motions.
Methodically solving the puzzle, Kane stares into the camera as he continues to solve the puzzle, as if doing it from memory.
Kane: You can take your time...or if you’re working against a clock, like always in a wrestling match...then you can speed it up.
He begins to quickly rattle off turns to the puzzle revealing a few fully mono coloured sides as he does so. From here it’s academic.
Kane: Now if you haven’t figured this out by now, I’ll tell you that this Rubik’s cube...is you. And while you may think you have the mental edge over me...the experience, the wherewithal...this little gimmick here is simply here to let you know that I’m much smarter than I let on. I like that you play possum, Logan. It’s smart, and I appreciate the mind’s power over the body. But what happens when you run into someone younger? Smarter? Stronger? Quicker? Hungrier? What does that...mean? Well, Logan Alexander - it means that person has you all...figured...out.
The last three words escaping Christian’s lips in unison with his last three turns of the puzzle, Kane places the fully solved Rubik’s cube down onto the glass stand. With his almost trademarked smirk, the Canadian Sensation addresses the North American champion one last time.
Kane: I’ll see you Sunday, ‘champ’.
With that said, the camera zooms in on the Rubik’s cube, slowly fading to black after a few moments.
