Damn it…
The scene is just coming into focus and the camera is already on Logan Alexander. He’s slouched down on the couch in his living room, with his head tipped back so he’s facing the ceiling. He’s dressed in t-shirt and shorts despite it being the middle of winter. He doesn’t go on after his initial complaint.
Something wrong?
My problems are piling up on me…
I wasn’t aware you had any serious problems.
He lifts his head and looks at the camera.
I don’t walk around lamenting about them. You’ve heard about my upcoming match?
I try to keep up. You’re facing Amy Zing and Young Mannie for the title. Something about this match worrying you?
Yes. They’ve been stepping up. I’ve paid attention and seen them bringing out something new. Lately, I’ve faced people who’re on a certain level and are fairly steady. I can expect something high calibre but I have a can anticipate it.
This is the first time in a while that I’m facing opponents with potential for unpredictability. I watch Zing and Mannie and I see them raising their performance each week and they’ll be raising it even higher this week…
I don’t know if I’ll be able to handle the both of them…
What makes you say that? Haven’t you beaten them previously?
He nods slightly.
I have. I’ve faced Mannie before and eliminated him from the North American title match at One Night in Hell. I’ve faced Zing twice, first losing by disqualification and then pinning her at the supershow. Since they crossed paths recently, they’ve been taking their performance to the next level.
I’ve done incredibly well, taking on all comers and been putting on five-star matches with other Meltdown competitors. Some people see this brand like some sort of rookie showcase or training area, but most people here can compete. But as well as I’m doing, I think I’ve reached a plateau. And it’s not enough…
He lets out a breath and lets his head fall back. He reaches up and rubs his forehead.
I need to get better.
You don’t feel that you’re good enough, even with what you’ve accomplished?
He lowers his hands after a few moments.
Maybe for Meltdown. Competition here is good… but I’ve faced some from Asylum. What I’ve done here isn’t good enough to beat the people at the top there. I’m not sure if my best right now would stack up against their worst.
Isn’t that’s an exaggeration? You’ve always had a knack for doing what people believe you can’t.
No one defies the odds forever.
He looks towards the camera, frowning.
I’ve gotten pretty comfortable… and that can make you complacent. One day, you’ll realize everyone’s catching up or passing by and you can’t keep up. I need to get going before they do. If I was able to beat the odds as well as you suggested, I’d probably have made a better showing in Survive and Conquer rather than being there for two minutes.
I never said that you’d do the near impossible, but I see your point.
Yeah. I don’t think I did my best… even considering the match I had before. I don’t face those situations often, but the ones who made up the bulk of competitors left there when I arrived are the calibre opponent I’ll have to face once I leave Meltdown. I need to push myself to that point now.
He shakes his head disappointedly.
I thought I was better than this.
You’ve been out a long time. Before August, you hadn’t wrestled in any wrestling venue for a year and a half. You’ve only spent six to eight months training and working with students. You can’t expect to return and be at your peak immediately.
He looks back at the camera.
I know that. I lost matches here that I wouldn’t have before but did now because I needed to relearn to compete with opponents that aren’t holding back. My students wouldn’t go all out against me and my friends wouldn’t have pushed me that hard either. So here I am… trying to break through this barrier…
If I win this week, I’ll probably have to defend the North American championship twice next week to remain champion. Kane and Valo have both pushed me to my limit and now I might have to face them back-to-back in one night.
He leans his head back again and lets out a breath.
I’m not walking a path… I’m scaling a mountain that’s getting steeper the higher I climb. If what I’ve done thus far is my best… then I’m going to fail, maybe this week or next.
You sound pretty sure of that.
As I’ve said, I’m facing two rapidly improving opponents this week, with two more waiting in the wings next week. I need to go beyond what I’ve been doing. Find something better… whatever it is.
The scene fades out on the despondent champion.
The scene doesn’t fade right back in immediately. Instead the scene remains black and a voiceover from Logan plays instead.
I defend my championship again this week… I appear to be the workhorse of the APW champions. It’s my third title defence in four weeks. What’s my reward for victory? Two title defences next week. Things only get harder for me it seems.
I suppose I shouldn’t be completely surprised by who I face this week. Young Mannie was seconds from winning beat-the-clock before Survive and Conquer, so I understand why he’s here. Amy Zing though… can’t say I understand why she’s here. She’s showing improvement. She’s gotten a burst of motivation since she and Mannie crossed paths, but I don’t see how that makes APW’s charity case deserving of a title match. That’s something I don’t understand.
I suppose it doesn’t matter. I need to deal with this situation instead of worrying about why it’s come about. I’ve beaten all the top contenders that have been thrown my way. Now I’ve got to handle the next step down. It would be quite embarrassing to be beating the best and then slip up against the rest, so I’ll have to make sure not to get burned by underestimating Mannie and Zing based on how uninspiring the two of them have been in general. It’s hard though…
The scene comes into view. A white room well lit, maybe a little too bright. The room looks empty. After a few moments Logan walks into the scene from the left side and he turns to look at the camera. His hair is neatly brushed back. He’s dressed in a white t-shirt with black writing that reads ‘Need a hero?’, a pair of blue jeans and a blue jean vest. He tucks his hands into his pockets and smiles at the camera.
Young Mannie returned with a laudable goal. He wants to improve wrestling on APW’s ‘C-brand’. Funny… all this time I thought the brand was called Meltdown. Now he has a chance to become king of the tiny hill as he sees it. Let me ask you Mannie, do you really care about becoming North American champion at all? Since this show is worthless and the talent’s a joke, in your eyes, what would winning the title prove?
I’m sure you’ll puff out your chest and proclaim that winning the title will be the greatest thing to happen to Meltdown as the belt will belong to a real wrestler who’ll represent the brand with… whatever qualities you claim to possess. I’d fill those blanks in, but I don’t know much about you Mannie. Like most people that compete, run, and follow APW, I’ve never had a reason to take note of or care about you in any way, shape, or form. I can’t think of anything you’ve ever accomplished in APW.
The only thing I’ve noticed about you is that you like to do lots of talking.
He laughs softly.
I only have to look back to September and October to recall you going on about how you had big plans, and the great things you were going to accomplish. I’m sure you remember Michael Lively. I remember you talking about how you’d go out, get a match with him for the North American championship, beat him, and take the title. Whatever happened to that bold prediction Mannie?
He glances up and to the side, also raising one hand and tapping a finger against his lips as he thinks about it.
Oh yeah… it turned out you weren’t up to the task. You got your shot at Lively as did a good chunk of the Meltdown roster at One Night in Hell. That should’ve been your moment of glory. I’m sure you believed it was. How did that night end? I believe you were passed out on the floor courtesy of a slingshot Stryke Force from yours truly.
Somewhat fittingly, your dream of being the champion ended at my hands… and here you are with another opportunity and I stand before you again. The only difference is that I’m the champion. You’re the same guy with a fancy new ring name.
He shrugs slightly and smirks at the camera.
And this all relates back to what you’re trying to accomplish now, with you wanting to improve wrestling in APW. I have to ask though, and if you give me an answer it’d be unexpected, but how exactly are YOU the person needed to set everything right?
He regards the camera calmly, looking on expectantly.
It absolutely baffles me Mannie, and it probably does the same to one hundred percent of the audience. You’re hardly the standard bearer for anything wrestling related. You’ve accomplished nothing of note here, yet after getting kicked off the show for throwing a temper tantrum after losing a match in December, you’re suddenly the savior we’re awaiting? How absurd.
He smiles again.
Face facts Mannie, you won’t change wrestling in APW or even on Meltdown because you aren’t good enough to do so. There’s another guy who shares your dream. His name’s Tuhoa Valo. He’s much better than you and I’ve already tallied three victories against him. He has yet to follow through on his big promises either.
No Mannie, I think you’ll have to stop pretending to be the hero. The only kind of change you encourage is for the fans watching around the world who pick up their remotes and change the channel when you happen to appear on screen to run your mouth and make claims you cannot possibly back up.
You want to see an example of someone that’s embraced as a hero and has the potential to change the wrestling world? You’re looking at him.
He grins a bit more widely.
I don’t care about any of that though. Yet I have everything you’d ever want and the ability to do more. But I’m not you. I’m successful. I’m a rising star, if not a star outright. I’m one of the best things going on Meltdown, and I do it all for myself Mannie. Think about that for a while as you ponder your goals and the challenge before you this week.
He nods to the camera.
Then we have Amy Zing, a one time hero who’s currently set out to make people take her seriously.
The camera’s focused on Logan, but he hasn’t spoken. He looks past the camera. The camera turns. The room’s colour scheme shifts from white to black. This part of the room’s lit by light from the other half. The camera settles on Logan here, who’s wearing black jeans, a red shirt, and a black leather jacket. His hair is more unkempt and his bangs hang over his eyes. He brushes them aside.
Mannie didn’t. He beat her up and his uncle offended her. How did the shining beacon of goodness respond? She launched one of the most cowardly attacks I’ve ever seen against a non-competitor because her pride had been hurt.
He looks at the camera with disdain.
You know what Amy… suck it up. You bared all for Playboy. Chuck’s only mistake was that he didn’t offer you enough money to do the same for him.
He snorts softly.
I listened to your holier-than-thou crap while you stood on Morality mountain, tossing verbal grenades at me through November and Decemeber because I didn’t live up to your expectations. You threw a tantrum like a child learning that there was no Santa Claus. But I let it slide. You know why, Amy? Because I don’t care what you think. Not then, not now. But you apologized to me this week.
He stands there and we see his expression changing like he’s trying to get a bad taste out of his mouth. He moves over, grabbing hold of the camera and pulling it closer as he glares into the lens.
Do you have any idea how much that pisses me off?
He pushes the camera back. It steadies and refocuses on him after a few moments.
You’ve had weeks to make an apology if you felt it necessary. Instead you bring it out the week we have a match, probably because you assume that I would be looking to break something other than a sweat… or perhaps someone. And you really don’t want it to be you.
He looks at the camera disappointedly.
I’ve listened to your words and witnessed your actions recently. Everything you do is hypocritical. You’re so self righteous that even when you’re in the wrong, you justify your actions while sinking lower than the people you do them to. It’s pathetic to watch.
You have issues with Mannie… I get that. I have issues with lots of people too, but you’ve crossed lines that I wouldn’t and I’ve done plenty in the past. I’ve backstabbed friends, assaulted injured competitors, attacked valets and managers… yet I’ve never gone as far or low as you. I’ve had reason to cut loose on several people here but haven’t.
You’ve hospitalized one person and assaulted one other with a weapon. It’s debatable whether either of them have done anything to warrant such retaliation. You’ve done nothing to Mannie directly, just lashing out blindly. People shouldn’t cheer you. You’re as bad… if not worse than Mannie. You’re dangerous, reckless, and can’t get the job done.
He smirks smugly at the camera.
I’d be appalled by your actions if I wanted. Personally, I find it amusing to watch you destroy everything you stand for to get revenge against a man whose trademark in APW is failure… but you can’t. You had him in the ring two weeks ago and couldn’t get the job done. Why should anyone believe you’ll do any better this week? The situation is similar, the stakes are higher, and the competition is tougher.
You’ve said you don’t care about winning and just want revenge. Well… let me tell you Amy, I don’t believe you have it in you to take this as far as you want. You’re outside your comfort zone. You don’t have it in you to be. If you did, I don’t think Mannie would be an issue for you now. But you cling to your ideals and the adoration of the fans. Those are two limitations that will hold you back as you straddle the line between what you were and what you will be.
The interesting part is no matter what you do… Mannie’s going to win. Either you’ll hold back and he’ll remain beyond your grasp, or you’ll do what needs to be done and lose everything you hold dear. Quite a predicament.
He crosses his arms in front of himself as he smiles.
What we have here’s a situation where you both are playing roles you aren’t suited for.
Logan glances to the left, towards the voice. The camera pans that way. Where the room shifts from white to black, the first Logan stands in the white part and then speaks.
Mannie wants to gain acceptance and play the hero by claiming noble ideals.
He glances over as the second Logan steps in beside him and speaks.
Zing wishes to get revenge like an anti-hero but toes the line to villainy in the process.
The two glance at one another. A third voice speaks from the other side of the camera.
I think they should stop playing pretend.
The two Logans look past the camera. The camera turns and a third Logan stands there, dressed in his usual ring attire and jacket. The room is grey behind him and blends into the black and white on either side. Logan smirks slightly.
You’re both after things you cannot have. I’m going to demonstrate that to you both by doing what neither of you can, because I’m the best of both.
I’ve already assumed your mission Mannie. I’m the champion. I’m one of the best wrestlers on Meltdown. I’ve been raising the standard for three months and everyone’s being stepping up to keep pace. There’ll always be those who can’t, but there’s no reason to cut them loose. They’ll either improve or never rise to the top. Sound familiar Mannie? You’re one of them.
Listen well, Zing… I hold no allegiance to the fans and follow my own rules. I’ll give you a demonstration of how to deal with problems because I intend to put you and Mannie down with extreme prejudice and no remorse. You’re both in my way, I don’t like either of you, and don’t think either of you can assume the burden I carry. I’ll do whatever I have to in order to leave as champion.
I’ve defeated the both of you in the past. I intend to do the same tomorrow because I think it’s time I stop playing pretend as well, and start bringing everything I have.
He smiles at the camera confidently.
See you soon.
He nods to the camera and the scene fades to black.
The scene is just coming into focus and the camera is already on Logan Alexander. He’s slouched down on the couch in his living room, with his head tipped back so he’s facing the ceiling.
