The scene is completely black. There are sounds so you know whatever is going on is working. But there is nothing on the television screen. After a second it becomes apparent there is nothing wrong with the transmission, it’s just that the lights are out. Suddenly Shadow speaks up.
“I’m going on record to say this is a really stupid idea. Like Slade-level stupid.”
“Hush!” Someone says.
“Seriously Seann, it’s too soon.”
“No; it’s not, trust me. Listen, you told me you needed to send a message that could speak for the history you share with your opponent this week. Come on, this is perfect.”
“I don’t like it.”
“Shut up and get into character!” Seann hissed.
The lights flicker on. Shadow is shown sitting in a metal chair in a dingy manila brick interrogation room. There is a metal table in front of him and a mirror on the wall to his left. But that’s not what really catches the viewer’s eye. Shadow wears a purple and green custom tailored suit, has his long hair dyed green (with food coloring) and his face is painted to resemble the Joker. For all intents and purposes, he is doing a hell of a job with the look. Behind Shadow stood someone in a Batman costume, but instead of the bat symbol across the chest it, was an astronaut.
“Ready?”
“Not really...”
The Biggs-man (Seann Michaels) steps forward and slams Shadow’s head forward into the table before Shadow could finish his sentence. Shadow put his hands up to protect himself as they reenacted this scene from the Dark Knight.
“Ow.” Shadow said as he pulled his head upright. He wasn’t comfortable with the lines. Now there was a white smudge on the table.
Biggs-man walked around the table. He yanked the other metal chair out and took a seat across from the much larger and taller Shadow. The height difference between the two was apparent. Shadow had to look down across the table at Biggs-man. He was waiting for Shadow to say it.
“Fine,” Shadow muttered. “Never start with the head, the victim gets all fuzzy.”
The line worked for them, Biggs was notorious for bashing Shadow in the head with a chair. Biggs-man drives his fist down onto Shadow’s hand. Shadow stares at it unmoved. He looks up at Biggs-man, completely stoic.
Biggs-man growled and he glared at Shadow. “Tell-me-what-I-wanna-know!”
Shadow looked at him confused. “Uh What?”
Biggs-man repeated himself in the same growl-like nonsensical voice. Shadow just stared across table finally Biggs-man dropped the vocal manipulation.
“Okay Shadow, let’s talk. After our tag match promos a few weeks back, I got the sense you wanted to kill me.”
Shadow stared across at the Biggs-man. He saw everything he hated staring back at him. For two years Biggs was the bane of Shadow’s existence. A Napoleonic bully who sought to plague Shadow every way possible. As Shadow looked into the Biggs-man’s eyes he realized why this scene was chosen, why these two characters worked perfectly. Everything suddenly clicked in Shadow’s mind. He saw more clearly now than he had in a long while. Within seconds, he immersed himself in the character. The dark, psychotic character.
“Kill you?” Shadow laughed. “Why would I want to kill you? What would I do without you, go back to kicking the crap out of rookies?” He gestured back and forth between them both repeatedly. “No, no, no, you comPLETE me!”
Inside the mask Seann saw the change in his friend but didn’t think too much on it. Across the table Shadow only saw Biggs.
“You’re insane, a monster, a psycho who hurts people for pleasure!”
Shadow cut his right hand across the air to silence Biggs-man.
“Don’t talk like one of those other Megastars. You’re not. Even if you wanted to be;” Shadow points to the mirror as if someone was on the other side. “To them you’re just a freak; like me! They pitted you against me because they want me gone. They need you right now. You’re one of the few people who has actually succeeded before. That’s why Rebel chose you. But when it’s over, they will turn on you. You know it too; that they’ll cast you out. Like a leper. You see, their boasts and bravado, it’s all a bad act. They flee at the first sign of trouble and leave someone else to fight the wolf. They’re pathetic, I’ll show you. When you fail, when I stand across from all of them, I’ll show you how weak they are. They will tear each other apart just to escape my wrath.”
Shadow leans back in his chair and folds his arms across his chest. He stared at Biggs-man.
“You see Biggs, I’m not a monster. I’m just ahead of the curve.”
Biggs-man lunges across the table and grabs Shadow by his collar and goes to hurl him up. Shadow doesn’t budge. Biggs-man tries to sling Shadow up again, once more he doesn’t move. Biggs-man stares at the bigger man for a second and then releases Shadow’s collar and straightens the big man’s collar politely. Shadow just continues.
“Level One, Kurt Noble, Evan Envi, those fools, they all want things to go back to the way they were. But that’s the thing. There’s no going back now. We’ve changed things, forever.”
“Tell me what I want to know.”
“What you want to know? What do you want to know?”
“What happened to you, Shadow?”
“The rules have changed Biggs.”
Shadow stood up and got in Biggs-man’s face. He actually made the Biggs-man back up into the mirror. Shadow leans down and smirks. They are nose to nose.
“You have your rules now Biggs. You changed when Elle left. You started being a man of the people, a different kind than me. And that’s the point!”
Shadow punched the mirror. It cracked inward. Seann looked at his friend from behind the mask. He wondered he worried if Shadow knew who he was really talking to.
“Shadow?”
“Rules just hold you back. They slow you down and that are the reason people like Level One will take advantage of you. They will exploit your rules. You’ll find Biggs, that the only sensible way to live in this world is without rules.”
“I only need one rule.” Shadow heard Biggs' voice in his head. It wasn’t what Seann was saying.
“And that’s the rule you’ll need to break to beat me.”
Shadow started laughing.
Seann grabs his friend and spins him into the mirror.
“Shadow snap out of it!”
Shadow continues laughing loudly. He can’t stop. He doesn’t see his friend in front of him anymore. He just sees Biggs. In a flash in an instant Shadow remembered every match he ever had with Biggs. Shadow couldn’t stop laughing hysterically. Finally he breathed and said to his hallucination. Seann shook him violently but to no avail.
“You have nothing! Nothing to threaten me with anymore Biggs. Your friends, Cyrus, the Beast, Stan, Armando, they’re all gone! All that charisma, all that talent and you’re still powerless to stop the inevitable!”
Seann slams Shadow against the cracked glass. Shadow’s head smashes against the mirror making shards break free and fall. Seann sees the falling glass and spins his friend back to the table, shoving Shadow against the metal. Shadow just laughed.
“You couldn’t do it could you? You just can’t do it. You’ll see. I’ll remind you what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. It will be devastating. You can’t destroy me because I am eternal. And I won’t end you because you’re just too much fun.”
Shadow stands up right and fixes his suit.
“I think you and I are destined to do this forever.”
Shadow began laughing again. He just couldn’t quit. Seann ripped off his mask and yelled at his friend trying to bring him back to reality.
“Shadow! Shadow!”
Seann seized Shadow’s collar again and shook him. Still nothing. As Shadow continue to kill himself with his uncontrollable laughter Seann did the only other thing he could think of: he kneed Shadow in the groin. It worked. Shadow stopped laughing and dropped to his knees, clutching his nuts in pain. He looked up and saw Seann looking down at him. Michaels took a step back and caught his own breath as Shadow took several minutes to regain control of himself and let his nut crunching pain subside. After a few more minutes Shadow took a deep breath and looked up at Seann. He couldn’t think of anything else to say. So Shadow just asks.
“We finished?”
Shadow steps out of the white firebird on Overdrive. The preshow titantron shows the fans going nuts as he reaches back into the car and pulls out his ring gear bag. It’s been awhile since Shadow was shown driving this car. He turns toward the camera. Unlike most times, Shadow is not wearing his leather duster, he just has on a grey T shirt and black jeans. But the shirt is what’s glorious. Shadow is wearing a “The Dark Brony” T Shirt. The crowd goes ape shit.
Shadow has a white box with blue ribbon on it tucked under his left arm as he walks silently through the parking lot. No one says anything to him. He enters the arena quietly, moving down the hallway without a single noise. Even the huge gigantic feet Shadow was blessed with don’t thud with each foot fall. Shadow is perfectly quiet. At ringside Darren Harvey and Johnny Chase are commenting on the preshow spectacles taking place tonight. Seeing Shadow on the titantron stirs their attention. While the fans live can’t hear them, APW.com’s preshow countdown views can.
Harvey: There he is! Listen to that crowd! Shadow is here in Charlottetown!
Chase: What is that ridiculous shirt he is wearing?
Harvey: Shadow calls himself the Usher of Darkness, and he is apparently a fan of the new My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic show. I guess that makes Shadow a Brony.
Chase: Oh please. That is the stupidest thing I have ever seen!
Backstage Shadow walks through the locker room corridors. But to everyone’s shock he passes his own and continues down the hallway.
Harvey: Where is Shadow going?!
Chase: I never credited the big lug with much brains. Guess now you know why.
Shadow turns a corner as the camera continues to follow him. The fans begin to scream again as the newly declared Dark Brony comes to the a locker room door that reads “Biggs.” Shadow bangs on the door with his fist. No response. Shadow knocks again, loudly: still nothing.
Harvey: What is Shadow doing at Biggs’ locker room?
Chase: That psychopath can’t wait until later! Hey wait security get back there! Shadow’s breaking and entering.
Sure enough Shadow has opened the door to Biggs locker room. The room is dark, Shadow turns on the light and it becomes apparent Biggs has not arrived yet. Shadow silently strolls into the locker room and sets the white box on the bench. He leans down and raises the lid for all to see: one dozen black roses and a Valentine’s Day card that reads TO:
“My Bloody Valentine”
The fans erupt as Shadow stands up and turns to the door. From behind his sunglasses Shadow just smiles. He leaves the roses there as a message for Biggs. It’s a message for tonight.
It’s been over two years since Biggs “ran me out of Action Packed Wrestling.” I haven’t forgotten that night. Biggs and I faced off in a two out of three falls match for the Overdrive championship and I fell prey to the Spaceman. This is probably one of my biggest regrets in APW. Not losing to Biggs because I’ve beaten him before just as he has done tome.
No, my regret is that I left after that. Biggs didn’t run me out I just felt dried up. I should have stuck around. I was working my way up to the top of APW, I had every opportunity in front of me and then I just up and left. I left so many things unfinished. I abandoned my tag partner, I abandoned the fans and I gave up on my dream.
Now, I have the chance to rectify all of that, I’ve already accomplished my prime goal of staying in APW a full year. And after eleven months, I was finally allowed the opportunity to make this regret right: Biggs versus Shadow. This match has been brewing since I came back to APW, since Biggs held my foot down during my return match. I hate to think that I left falling to him and returned the same way. I can’t stand it. It makes me look like a bitch.
Last week I spent all my time shooting my mouth off about Michael Lively, calling him the biggest piece of walking crap in this business. Everything I said was warranted too. And if Biggs was the same man he was when I returned to APW I would be spouting off about him too. But that’s the thing, Biggs has changed. He’s a better man now, a man of the people. I can respect that.
Last time you and I were scheduled to be in the ring together Biggs, you talked about wanting to work as a team. You invited me onto First Contact and offered the olive branch. I wasn’t very receptive and I owe you an apology for that. I didn’t trust you Biggs, I didn’t want to. But can you blame me? After everything that has happened with Slade why would I want to trust anyone? Let alone you. It’s easier for me to just be angry.
Think about it Biggs, if I were to roll into Overdrive tonight and just brutally bash your brains in with my oversized fists that would be so easy for me; to take all my anger out on you. But then you might ask yourself, why are you angry, Shadow? I’ve run so many people out of APW, won a damn good amount of matches and even had the chance to face a fellow Hall of Famer at Rasslemania. Why the hell is Shadow angry?
I’m always angry, it’s my fuel, it’s my desire. It’s what gives me the strength to overcome any and all odds before me. But anger is not the key word tonight. It’s desire. Where do our desires come from; the heart. My heart beats like a rhythmic drum, the monotonous music it emits is hypnotic. It draws me into myself and reminds me of everything I am capable of. The thing is, while I may be capable of so much, I still tell myself that I’ve only achieved a little.
Biggs for two years you have had the chance to run around Action Packed Wrestling unchecked. In the time that I’ve been gone you were able to everything I walked away from. Biggs you lived the dream that could have been mine had I not stepped aside. But it’s okay. In three simple seconds I can achieve everything I ever dreamed: by pinning you. No, it won’t give me back the Overdrive Championship, nor will I obtain the Undisputed Championship, but I will prove to everyone, including myself that I am every bit of monster I was when I first arrived so long ago.
Do you know what tonight is, Biggs? It’s Valentine’s Day. What a day too. After everything we have done to one another we have never spent this specific holiday together. I think it’s only fitting we do this year. At first, I wondered what Johnny Rebel was thinking when he booked this match, but I see it now. I get it. He knows that there is no love lost between us, he knows the history. What’s a better Valentine’s Day Massacre than pitting Biggs versus Shadow on the day of love and compassion?
I’d like to think it would be a simple massacre like I had last week with Michael Lively. But I know Biggs will put up more of a fight. Nothing against the White Lion, but he doesn’t have as much hidden animosity for me like my next challenge does. In the past, Biggs has done everything under the sun to break me both mentally and physically. He saw me as the ultimate test: the great giant Shadow. It was a phenomenal victory for Biggs too, to take me down.
But that was just the first shot in a war that lasted nearly a year; the 2009 Feud of the Year for that matter. Johnny Rebel, the fans may hate him for turning Stefan Raab loose on President Jeff last week, but the man is still a genius. And here I go setting another standard like I’ve done plenty of times before. I get to show everyone why Valentine’s Day is the true bloodiest holiday of the year. Forget ‘All Hallows Eve’ and ‘National American Slaughter the Indian Day,’ I’m going to make this a Valentine’s to remember. I’m not going to ask you to “Be Mine,” either. I’m going to straight up make you my prison bitch.
So Biggs I wish I could say I am sorry for what is going to happen tonight. But I won’t. This war has been a long time coming Biggs. But I don’t want you to be dismayed. Tonight when you hear my music hit the sound system you may feel a sense of dread. Don’t worry, it only means you’re sane. But the moment you lay eyes on me tonight you may also begin to hallucinate, your life may pass before your very eyes. You might see yourself running through an Irish Countryside with your father’s shepherd dog, while your mother calls out to you from the small stone cottage. Then you’ll realize how insignificant you are when compared to me, my long time enemy; because someone else’s life is flashing before your eyes. Again I pray that your heart isn’t weak and weary- because I plan to rip it out tonight. Happy Valentine’s Day, Biggs. I’ll see you in Hell.

Again I pray that your heart isn’t weak and weary- because I plan to rip it out tonight. Happy Valentine’s Day, Biggs. I’ll see you in Hell.
