I hope I'm not stepping on toes here, but I've read Meltdown and thought I would jot down my notes while it's all fresh. Besides not sure if I'll get another chance this week.
APW’s 300th show and it opens to....Young Mannie. The second coolest wrestler sporting the ‘dark orchid’ font (j/k brother).
Mannie describing himself as the most dominant NA Champ was a nice touch; completely delusional (given he’s had it a week or two), but exactly the sort of thing you’d do to draw heel heat. I thought it was good to see Mannie addressing how the ‘APW fans’ have been discussing his ‘back and forth’ nature, and this promo went someway to solidifying Mannie’s heel credentials. It was certainly the most consistent promo Mannie’s put in terms of the personality he’s trying to put over. However, I think Mannie still needs to find a particular niche for when he fully transitions to Asylum. There’s a few top notch heels over there, and it will take more than simply condescending the crowd to stick out among them.
These GMs are a right grubby lot; Sienna has really come into her own of late. You can always debate the issue of authority figures and their roles as part of the shows, but I think in Duvall and Sienna you’ve got GMs who are clearly distinct in the way they work, compared to Rebel on Overdrive and Schmidt on Asylum. As long as the show doesn’t become all about them (which it isn’t I will add), I’m happy for them to have some of the heel heat.
Sienna, what a freaking flirt!
Good match between Dahlia and Phoenix. Who was the match writer, someone sign him up to a professional contract. I jest. This was a good contest and I’m glad both guys put in good RP efforts, hopefully they see this match as a suitable reward.
First The Guv’nor, now Knoxville. With all this romance in the air, we should have made this the Valentine’s special.
A good set-up segment from Havok, building what was to come later. I thought the blackmail racist joke a bit odd though, and not sure it was really needed since this was all about implying Valo had Duvall’s nuts in a twist somehow; the goofy joke didn’t fit with the menace the rest of the segment entailed.
Evan McDonald seems to be going about his business in a quiet, straightforward way. He seems to be the business, so I’d like to see him take a leap and put himself out there because other than the fact he’s Scottish and squashed a few guys, I know jack shit about the character.
Nice little segment between the GMs, one that you think is going to be filler, but actually builds the show nicely, hyping the ME and what is to come with all that ‘havoc’.
A good win for the NBK. The story I got in the match was of Knoxville biting off a bit more than he could chew. If that was the plan, it was solid stuff. However, I was expecting Knoxville to go over all beast-like.
Strange promo from Knoxville; his response to the match was a bit too flippant for me, especially with the big GEE he gave himself beforehand. That said, I’m still learning this Knoxville character, so maybe things will begin to fall into place a bit more in a few weeks.
A nice match between Hyatt and Peace; whoever wrote this did a good job of making both guys look good, and Hyatt, despite losing, should take a lot from this, build on it, get that character over. Good win for Peace, on a personal level I’m happy for the dude because we know he’s had his struggles OOC. We’ve all been waiting for him to follow-up that stir he made in Autumn 2011, so it’s good to see him get a chance to show what he can do in a showcase match. Well done! Mannie’s closing comments were good, glad he didn’t bury Peace.
I re-read the main event, and I have to apologise for writing a match that was bit over-booked. That’s what happens when you want to tell a few stories, but ending up telling none.
I’ve got no gripes with the final segment since it achieved what it set out to do. There was a slight continuity error with the show closing down, only to continue with Valo/Havok. But that’s as much my fault probably, and that minor oversight is forgiveable given Terry’s bad day at work yesterday.
The real shame was that this one never panned out how Havok wanted it to. I don’t know the circumstances that led to the early relevation OOC that kind of killed what would have been a great buzz if we’d got to this stage believing The Finnish Phenom was a completely distinct character. But these things happen. Havok’s given himself a bit of platform here, so let’s see what he can now do with it.
Good show all-round, maybe could have done with one or two more segs outside the usual suspects, but with Meltdown in a bit of transitional phase this is to be expected.
