When I saw my name on the Meltdown card against the Natural Born Killaz... I was excited... I’m still excited... Tommy Knoxville is my partner? This week is going to be fun.
You separate the Natural Born Killaz and look at them individually... one guy I can relate to... the other... I want to crush.
Leon Roberts... The Virus... Did you really turn on a match from your debut to try to prove a point last week? Boy, what kind of stupid are you? Do you think that anything you accomplished in whatever garbage fed that you left to get here amounts to anything? If you think that your previous accolades will get you anywhere in APW... I have some ocean front property in the middle of Arkansas to sell you.
Where was that impressive, drug inducing debut?
How many times was it voted as wrestling company of the year?
Ready to take APW by storm... and you BOTH couldn’t put away one guy?
Tommy Knoxville humbled you boys last week. You can call it what you want, but Knoxville sent a message last week... and you guys got it loud and clear... perhaps that’s why we haven’t heard from you guys yet this week... it’s easy to sit back and lick your wounds isn’t it? Let the other guys do the talking and then you just respond to what we say.
What tough guys... Natural Born Killaz? With this attitude the only championships you’ll be winning is the APW Hide-And-Seek championships or you’ll end up going back to whatever garbage heap you came out of.
Just the look that your father gives you... you just don’t get it. That’s not a look of admiration or respect... that’s a look of,”Where did I go wrong?” It pained him to listen to you talk... and it pained me to listen to it too... So let me get this straight...
You’ve set things on fire before? Wow, you must be a real tough guy.
You had a match in a shed in front of 20 people and did some moves... Wow, move over TMarv, Leon Roberts is on the hunt!
You can use a ton of profanity? I bet that makes you really tough and smart to boot.
You drink beer and smoke cigars? Looks like I’d better watch out. Only tough guys do that.
Nothing you did last week impressed me, or anyone else in APW for that fact... but I suppose I can only speak for myself.
Do you have a thimble full of ability? Sure you do. Are you as mean, tough, and respected as you think you are? Not even close.
Never has someone who has achieved so little, thought so highly of themselves... I’m just in shock.
Mr. Jake Titan... I don’t know much about you, but I can relate to you far better than Roberts. You seem to be a guy that understands his role in life, understands the need to dig yourself out of a whole.
I’ve been there. I’ve done that. I’ve done it with a smile. I’ve taken my lumps. Get back up and stay positive. That dear friends, is Southern Hospitality.
“Dad what’s this?”
The light flickered off of the dingy gold statue and Buck knew exactly what it was... We find J-Mac carefully climbing down the makeshift ladder turning and leaving the large door of the barn. Buck is in another part of the barn changing the horseshoes on Simmons, his blue roan.
J-Mac untucks the corner of his shirt and shines the name plate of the trophy, seemingly wiping away 15 years of dust. He squints and reads the words slowly.
J-Mac has never heard the story behind this trophy.
J-Mac Gooch: Hey Dad, how come I’ve never heard the story behind this trophy?
Gooch can be seen coming out of the recesses of the barn and into the light. His dirty face matches his stained overalls and filthy arms. Buck walks up and squints from the bright light of the sun and looks down at the trophy.
Buckson Gooch: Wow, I haven’t seen that in years.
Buck takes it into his hands and his eyes sort of glaze over wracking his brain for the details. Memories begin to flood back. The old, black boxing gloves. The ratty ring with the unprotected ropes. Buck fought in five matches that day. Seemed like everyone from the state showed up to events like this back in those days. A much thinner Buckson Gooch, 19 years of age. Buck wishes he could tell that young man so many things. With a ferocity and an anger met with the ability to hit very hard, Buck knocked out every opponent that day. He was given the trophy, but valued the $200 cash prize much more. He used that to buy food or clothes or something... a necessity. He can see his father, Bane, his sweet mother, Coach Coker, Annabelle, and newborn J-Mac sitting on the haybales cheering for him. It was a fun memory, but not one that defines who he is. J-Mac snaps his father out of the daydream.
J-Mac Gooch: You going to answer me, Dad?
Buckson Gooch: Years ago, before insurance prices skyrocketed, the Possomgrape Festival had a toughman competition... 1997 was the last year... It really wasn't a big deal... did you say your truck was making a rattle?
J-Mac is shocked that his father wouldn’t go into further detail.
J-Mac Gooch: Dad, tell me about it! I want to hear about it!
Buck shakes his head.
Buckson Gooch: Son, that was a long time ago. What I did when I was 19 years old was fun, but it doesn’t make the measure of who I am. You want to ask about how that day went, ask Uncle Mac or Mama. I saw an opportunity to do something I was good at to take care of my family. I got the check and that’s what mattered.
J-Mac Gooch: But this is something to be proud of, Dad!
Buckson Gooch: Son, my life isn’t defined by one day of fighting when I was a teenager. I want my life to be defined as a Christian man, a hard worker, a friend, a father, a husband... a man of character. Everything I’ve done in my life ties into the reputation I’ve built for myself, both good and bad. Son, what’s going on with your truck?
J-Mac is getting visibly angry. He wants to hear this story.
J-Mac Gooch: I want to hear what happened that day!
Buckson Gooch: Okay... I fought 5 guys and knocked them out. What else do you want to hear?
J-Mac Gooch: I want details!
Buckson smiles at his son’s excitement and glad his son is interested, but 1997 was a long time ago and Buck has lived a lot since then.
Buckson Gooch: I’m sorry, son. You should know me by now. I’m not going to look back and focus on the past. There’s too much going on in our future. I can’t sit back and think about crops of the past and neglect the harvest this year. I have to think about what I have coming up this week in APW, I can’t look at the past. It doesn’t do any good. You know I stay focused.
J-Mac nods his head a little frustrated.
Buckson Gooch: Son, only a loser sits around a reminisces about his previous accomplishments all day. One of the guys I’m facing this week embodies that. Leon Roberts... I bet if you asked him about a race he ran in the 4th grade, he could give you every detail about how he won. No matter how minimal the accomplishment, he will relish in it... I’m not that way. There’s a reason that his family looks at him like the loser he is... that he and his toughguy partner could barely beat one guy last week... there’s a reason that all he can go off of is a past of mediocre accomplishments... because he doesn’t have anything to really brag about, there’s nothing special about him that makes him stand out from a crowd... he hopes that his grandiose stories will impress people.
Buck takes his hankerchief out of his back pocket and dabs the sweat from his forehead.
Buckson Gooch: I’m a grown man. I had fun all those years ago, but I would hope my current body of work lets people know that I’m tough guy... not some match I had last year or some contest I was in when I was 19. Do you get what I’m saying, son?
J-Mac nods and shines up the trophy a little more.
J-Mac Gooch: So the money came in handy?
Buckson Gooch: It sure did. Your Mama and me were just scraping by back then. I worked hard and earned what we had. We loved each other now just as much as we loved each other back then. I would do whatever it took to keep our family afloat... that’s how Uncle Mac even got me in the wrestling business... and it makes me respect Jake Titan. Seems he’s doing something similar to me.
Buck replays in his mind Titan babysitting and the other odd jobs he’s had to do. That’s respectable. It’s a shame he’s getting the runaround.
Buckson Gooch: I’m looking forward to the match on Meltdown this week for two reasons... The first, is I’m looking forward to competing with Jake Titan. I’d cut him a check now to help him out... but he doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would take it... He’s a man up against the wall, much like I was. The only difference, is bad decisions didn’t cause our hard times... and we overcame. If he thinks he likes violence, we’ll see how much on Monday... and reason number two... Leon Roberts. The guy rubs me the wrong way.
Buck grabs his tool box and starts walking to J-Mac’s truck. J-Mac smiles at his Dad and pops the hood of the truck. Buck reaches for some tools and the screen fades out.
To say I was impressed by Tommy Knoxville last week would be an understatement. He wanted to prove a point... and he did. I’ll let Tommy share what that point was... but it resounded through twitter and the APW lockerroom.
Tommy Knoxville is the real deal.
To find a guy who is constantly trying to get better. Always trying to improve. A guy who is wanting to climb to the top of the mountain, not by telling old stories or shining a light on his previous mistakes... but he’s doing such by letting his actions speak louder than his words.
This week is going to be a lot of fun.
This week is going to be violent.
This week, Knoxville and Gooch are going to face the Natural Born Killaz and let them know what they’ve gotten themselves into. APW is very much, what have you done for me lately... and you boys have done nothing.
I’m glad that I’m going to get to be a part of your maturation process. Take the lessons you learn this week. The beating you get will teach you many different things... use it for the positive. Focus on the task at hand. Do what it takes to succeed.
Look forward... looking back won’t do you any good, you aren’t going in that direction...
Move forward from whatever your past was...
