Home!
Is it a place, or an idea? It’s always been the great debate for those who chose to hypothesize about such meaningless details. In reality, Home doesn’t really exist… not in the long run anyways. Home is wherever you can kick your feet up for a few moments before your next adventure. Home is wherever you feel at peace, wherever you feel accepted.
Let’s Bring it Home. In just about three weeks, APW will be returning to ITS home in Toronto Canada for the biggest event of the year…. RASSLEMANIA! The spotlights will be shining, the fan fair will be ridiculous, and the energy will be intense. And why shouldn’t it be. It is the reason children dream of stepping into the ring. It’s the reason I bust my ass every single day. It is our Mecca, our Valhalla, our promised land. It is our one goal, our only goal! Everything leads to Rasslemania.
Rasslemania is our HOME!
The Come home Show. That’s the name they give to the final regular show before any big time event. It’s the one where all the matches are cemented. It’s the one where the two main characters of the story interact for ONE last time before they go to war! And in the midst of all the promise and excitement of the GRAND STAGE, sometimes the little things get lost.
It’s important NOT to forsake the journey for the destination. After all, it’s not just about where we’re going, getting there is where the adventure lies! So while everyone else sits around with sugar plums dancing in their heads, daydreaming about the one big moment, the one huge finale…. I’ve still got a job to do. I’ve got the here and now to focus on. I’m still in the middle of my journey!
At Overdrive, there is but one final obstacle in my way, one more demon to vanquish before I’m face to face with destiny. And as always, I will handle my baggage, I will do what must be done and live in the now for one more fleeting moment. But after that is all said and done, after I’ve cleared my path towards greatness, there’s only one thing left I can possibly do….
I’m coming home!
“God I’ve missed you baby!”
No, the Undisputed Champion isn’t talking to a beautiful woman. He’s talking to a dark and empty house as the sunlight from the cracked door peeks through. It had been months since he’d been there.
“Sorry I’ve been gone so long. This travel schedule has been brutal as hell. You know how it is.”
Terry shifts uncontrollably as his facial expression betrays his words. He looks at a picture on the stand near the door. It’s the wedding photo of he and Faythe, his now ex-wife.
“Who am I kidding? I’ve been avoiding this place.”
He sets the picture back on the stand face down.
“I don’t know if it’s the emptiness, or the memories, or the absurdity of one man owning 17 rooms…. But this place just doesn’t feel like home anymore.”
He pauses and sighs, shaking his head.
“Maybe it never was! Maybe it was just a place for my stuff. Maybe it’s just wood and shingles and carpet. Lord knows I’ve never called this place home, never called this city home. I haven’t had a home for a very VERY long time.”
Terry smiles, but there’s no real feeling behind it.
“I don’t even know what that feeling is. Isn’t a home supposed to be where you raise your family? Isn’t it supposed to be where you come every night after a long day at work? Isn’t it supposed to be where your roots lie, where you feel safe and comfortable?”
Terry smirks and shakes his head.
“But I don’t get to have that do I? No, I chose a different path. I chose this life that I’m extremely great at. The second I did that, everything else went out the window. I’ve sacrificed my life, my happiness for something better, something much more impressive, something legendary! I gave up the sense of home for fame, fortune, and glory!”
He takes one more look around the place as he continues to move through the house. He comes upon one room completely empty except for a baby crib set up in the corner of the room.
“THIS was my future! We were all set to try. A child, to bear our name, our DNA. Somebody to carry on our great legacy. But life doesn’t always follow the roadmap you set out for it.”
He looks over the room with a sense of longing in his face before shutting it and heading back downstairs.
“THIS was my future! We were all set to try. A child, to bear our name, our DNA. Somebody to carry on our great legacy. But life doesn’t always follow the roadmap you set out for it. Things get in the way. We follow our dreams, our destiny, and the rest of our desires no matter how deep they lie, just fall by the wayside.
This is a fact of my life that I’ve accepted. And look at what I have to show for it. I am the Undisputed Champion! I am the king of the most dominant group in wrestling history. I’ve won the biggest, meanest, baddest fucking match where 99 of the so called top talent of the wrestling world were shown up by the man who proved to be their God! ”
Terry turns and heads towards the door.
“The wrestling ring is my home! When I’m there, I feel like myself. When I’m there, I feel comfortable, I feel whole. When I’m there, I know that everything I’ve done, everything I’ve given up is 100 percent worth it!”
HE opens the door and takes a step out, looking around one last time.
“Goodbye old Friend. I thought I’d find the answers here… but I only found more questions, more regret. You’re not a home… you’re just a house, a lifeless structure. There’s nothing here for me anymore, nothing I want anyways. ”
HE closes the door, shutting out all the light from the house. We stare at this vast lifeless place where so many dreams and memories could have been built. Instead it will stay dormant, never moving forward, never growing, never truly existing.
”The Definition of insanity is repeating the same course of action over and over, expecting different results. Sometimes, our frail human brains just can’t handle the negative reaction to certain things. It certainly can’t handle failure. It rejects the notion of not getting whatever it wants. However, that is no excuse for continually setting yourself up to be disappointed again and again and again. Isn’t that right Mr. Mania?”
The Undisputed champion stands in an empty wrestling ring with silver and blue ropes and one spotlight shining down on him.
”So, once again it is you and I staring across the ring at each other. Once again you’re going to try to do the impossible and take your shot at the big time, at the king of APW. I know how this works Mark. You’re not satisfied with your mediocre standing in the wrestling world and you want to use something or someone to catapult yourself to that next level. You want that one big win to justify your career, your choice of profession. You want that one tiny piece of evidence that doesn’t point at you being that guy who NEVER quite gets to the top rung of the ladder, always afraid of stepping past that one imaginary spot labeled ‘Do Not Stand.’”
Terry smiles and shakes his head.
”But you see Mark, that is the very elementary difference between you and I. I don’t live by the rules, don’t care about the glass ceiling. I simply burst through and climb to whatever heights I feel necessary. That’s why I’m the Undisputed Champion. That’s why I’m headlining Rasslemania. That’s why you’re spending your time cowardly ducking a man unfit to shine my fucking boots! But every now and then you get on this ego head trip and think you can reach just that little bit higher, aim just that next step up. Well, how’s that work out for you Mark?
Every time, you end up back down, beaten and battered, cursing the world and wishing that you’d never been born. You have to start all over again, work up your confidence, build back up that shattered ego. And once you think you’re ready, you go into self destructive mode and break it all down to shit! I understand the reasoning behind never being happy with anything less than the best. I understand never settling for anything less than absolute success. Then again, I’ve actually got the talent to back it up and don’t just simply spurt off a ton of hot air and broken promises.”
Terry smirks as he paces the ring. He pauses for a second and looks up to one section of the crowd. The lights come on and we see “MANIA ENTERPRISES PRESENTS: APW MELTDOWN!”
”This is your newest venture after all, isn’t it Mark? I’ve gotta say, aiming pretty high don’t you think? But to be honest, I have to commend your efforts. Buying part of APW, part of this legacy that I’ve built over the past year is a brilliant idea. I mean, I would have gotten in before I raised this companies stock 400 percent, but then you’ve never really been that good at business have you Mark? After all, if you google Mania Enterprises the most frequent search result is a picture of your logo with the caption “The Next Enron?” underneath.
This however, is a GREAT idea. Buying a piece of a company like this, investing in your future is extremely smart. Especially since your other career is just about over.
What? You thought you were going to be a professional wrestler for the rest of your life? HAHAHAHAH, oh you pour naïve soul. You don’t even realize it do you? You’ve PEAKED Mark Mania. Each of us have a HARD CAP in our careers and you’ve just bumped your head on yours! That overdrive title you’ve got… that’s what’s going to define you. That’s what’s going to be your in ring legacy. It’s all downhill after that so it’s AMAZING that you’ve got something to fall back on when the bills begin piling up! Awe, you actually thought you’d one day reach the pinnacle of APW, that you’d actually be the Undisputed Champion?”
Terry shakes his head and looks at the camera with sympathy in his eyes, fake or not.
”I honestly thought you knew Mark. You’re NOT THAT GUY! You’re not the ‘throw the company on your shoulders and lead it down the road’ type. You’re more the ‘The fans love me, and I’m fairly decent at what I do, so I’m going to hang in there as long as humanly possible until the world realizes that all my potential has drowned LONG ago’ kind of guy. I’m sorry if this sounds mean, sorry if it’s cruel, but I’m simply doing the same thing I always do Mark and I’m giving it to you strait. So here’s a giant dose of truth and an opportunity for you to GET REAL! Just look back at everything in your APW career Mark. You came in with guns blazing a couple years ago, a full head of steam and destined to turn APW on it’s heels. And you sped through the competition and things were looking up for you. But soon you ran out of steam! When you had a chance to take that extra step you fell on your ass.
And here you are again Mark. There are few people in APW who had a year even closely resembling mine in 2012, and you’re one of them. You came from NO WHERE and was the first draftee out of Meltdown after your FIRST MATCH! Impressive! I mean you had a few hiccups along the way. After all, you ran into yours truly and missed out on an opportunity to claim the Overdrive title. Then you missed out on a SECOND opportunity. But the third time’s the charm right? And now it’s time for you to move forward, to improve on your career. But there’s something there inside that brain of yours isn’t there Mania? There’s something holding you back!
It’s Fear! You’re afraid that if you go for the gusto that you’ll find yourself once again rebuilding your empire from the ground up! You don’t want to see it all crumble again, so you’re cautious. You’re watching your step, and it’s going to cost you everything Mark. One thing that is not tolerated in this business, one thing that is NEVER rewarded is a timid nature! If you’re not aggressive and doing everything you can to claim the throne, then you’re simply doing it wrong. After all, the only thing that has EVER mattered in APW, in wrestling, is being the absolute best. If millions of people don’t you’re your name what’s the point? If people aren’t talking about you at the water cooler, what’s the point? If you’re not feared and respected by every tom dick and Hairy to lace up a pair of boots, then WHAT’S THE FUCKING POINT MARK?”
The lights fade from the crowd and the writing disappears. Terry sits on the top turnbuckle and looks dead into the camera.
”14 months ago, all I heard about was how I failed, how I didn’t belong in APW, how I wouldn’t amount to anything more than a second rate NEVER WAS! So I guess you’re wondering what the difference is between what those critics told me and what I’m telling you. And it’s easy if you really think about it. I am fueled by hatred Mark. I’m fueled by the negative comments by the so called experts, fueled to the point that I will do everything in my power to prove them wrong just for the sole purpose of being right. I want to make them suffer for ever doubting me, want to make they break down and cry at the very thought of my overwhelming success.
You, however don’t have that switch in your body. You’re a GOOD guy remember Mark. You actually value the opinion of the morons and idiots that pay good money to watch their favorite superstars constantly get embarrassed by people they wish would DIE! You’re incapable of being that underhandedly vindictive. THAT is why you’ve never beaten me in the past. That is why you’ll never beat me in the future. That’s why Mania Enterprises is hanging on by life support, and that’s why you almost let Evan Envi RUIN everything you’ve worked for!
I am the world’s largest ASSHOLE Mark. I’m going strait to hell in the express lane when I’m dragged from this world kicking and screaming. I know that there are no Time Life magazine covers in my future. I realize that each and every person in this business wants to see me fail… BUT I DON’T GIVE A SHIT! I’ve sacrificed everything to be where I am today Mark. I sold my soul so I can sit in an imaginary throne and stroke a gold plated leather belt for a temporary time period. I was willing to lose everything. Are you Mark? Could you walk away from your precious girlfriend? Could you forsake your company, your family, everything else that distracts you from being VICTORIOUS? Could you do what it takes to break through that forth wall in your mind that defines the separation of being a mere mortal with extraordinary abilities and being the GREATEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO WRESTLING? I believe your station in life pretty much answers that question!”
Terry hops off the turnbuckle and walks to the center of the ring. He lays in the ring as the camera points down at him from over head. He simply closes his eyes.
”Can you hear it Mark?
I can. I hear 20 thousand plus screaming for my blood, begging you to end this unbelievable streak that I’m on and put me in my place. I can feel the hateful stares piercing into my brain as the smile on my face continues to grow and grow. It doesn’t matter what they say or do Mark…. I will always come out on top, I will always rise above the peons in the nosebleed section eating 10 dollar hotdogs and mortgaging their houses for a glass of watered down light beer. And the reason why it never bothers me… THIS IS MY HOME! This right here is my Master bedroom! And while all you people can do or say whatever you want… nothing can affect me here. I am safe. I am my own master. I am GOD!”
He opens his eyes looking into the camera.
”And if you think I’m going to let you come into MY house, drink all of my scotch, put your feet up on my coffee table and walk around in your underware…. You’re even more delusional than I’ve ever imagined Mark!
I haven’t been pinned in a one on one match in this ring since April of last year Mark! Do you really think I’m going to let some second rate minor league owner wanna be upstage GODS GIFT TO WRESTLING!
I Can’t let that happen Mark!
I WONT let that happen. Not with Rasslemania 2 weeks away. Not with CJ Gates waiting in the wings!”
Terry stands up and glares at the camera.
”TONIGHT, my momentum stays steady, and I stay on path to claiming my BIGGEST Rasslemania victory yet.
TONIGHT, I prove to you once and for all what it means to be the real deal in APW. Tonight I show you why I am the REAL SHOW and you’re simply the OTHER GUY!
Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame Mark! Enjoy you time in the spotlight.
When all is said and done and I walk out of here with my arms raised in victory, you’ll finally understand the power I have, you’ll finally understand why I am the UNDISPUTED CHAMPION and why no matter what puny section of APW you purchase…. I WILL ALWAYS RUN THIS BITCH!
The clock is ticking Mark. And in just a few hours… the clock will chime and once again it will be…..”
Terry takes a deep breath and puts his arms out. He closes his eyes as the canned boos from the crowd explode in the empty arena. His eyes fly open as the sounds stop and he smiles.
”SHOWTIME!”

”SHOWTIME!”
