TOWN

Havok
Rocky Balboa: Bulletproof Town JOAT

Congratulations. You're Rocky Balboa, one of the greatest characters in the history of cinema. Far from a polished boxer, your iron chin and unbreakable will brought you to the top of the heavyweight division and inspired millions of people. As such, your stature gives you immense benefits in this game.

Night role: First of all, you are bulletproof, meaning you cannot be nightkilled under any circumstances. However, you can still be lynched or mod-killed.

Additionally, as a Jack Of All Trades, you may utilize an array of one-shot options. These are listed below.

Counterpunch: You may use this option to use any night actions used against you against the person it came from. Should more than one player use a night action against you the night you counterpunch, one action will be chosen at random.
“Hey, Rocco!”: You may use this option to find out the identity of Rocky Balboa, Jr., your son and a fellow town player in the game.
Hit the meat: You may use this option to find out the identity of Paulie, your brother-in-law, a fellow town player in the game, and a former worker at the meat-packing plant you used to train at.
Knockout punch: You may use this option to kill one player in the game.
Motivational speech: You may select one player in the game and encourage them. That player will not have their night actions roleblocked or misdirected, provided they have one.
“Yo, Adrian!”: You may use this option to find out the identity of Adrian Balboa, your wife and a fellow town player in the game.

A note: If you are roleblocked, and the actions are unable to go through, you lose the one-shot action for the duration of the game.

Adrian Balboa: Town Journalist

You're Adrian Balboa, Rocky Balboa's wife and Paulie's sister. Formerly an employee at a pet store, you married Rocky between his bouts with Apollo Creed and became the mother of Rocky Balboa, Jr. However, underneath everything, you enjoy digging up dirt as much as anyone else.

Night role: As a Journalist, you may select one player in the game and see who visits them that night.

Paulie: Hated Town Roleblocker

You're Paulie, Adrian Balboa's brother and Rocky Balboa's brother-in-law. You used to work in a meat-packing plant, and you're the reason Rocky used to train by hitting slabs of meat. Rocky says you're not a bad guy, you just “take about seven years to get to know.” Well, the town doesn't have seven years, and has already jumped to conclusions about you.

Night role: You may select one person each night and roleblock them. However, as a “hated” member of the town, it takes one less vote to lynch you than any other player in the game.

T-Marv
Rocky Balboa, Jr.: Town Watcher

You're Rocky Balboa, Jr., Rocky and Adrian Balboa's son. Occasionally, you're bitter about certain things your parents do, but underneath everything, you love your folks and will do anything to help. Formerly a prominent member of a local firm, you've quit your job to help Rocky against evil forces.

Night role: As a Watcher, you may select one player in the game and see who they visit that night.

Gooch
Mickey Goldmill: Town Cop

You're Mickey Goldmill, Rocky Balboa's trainer. A gritty, no-nonsense guy whose life is the sport of boxing, you were with Rocky as he rose to prominence. Instantly, you knew Clubber Lang was bad news, and did everything you could to protect Rocky from him. As such, you've assumed a protective role.

Night role: As the Cop, you may select one player in the game and check their alignment, guilty or innocent.

Mark Mania
Apollo Creed: Town Encourager

You're Apollo Creed, a man of many nicknames and many accomplishments. Whether you go by the King of Sting, the Count of Monte Fisto, or any other name, you're one of the best to ever enter the ring. Your rivalry with Rocky Balboa turned into a friendship, and you actually helped train him before his second bout with Clubber Lang. You have the gift of gab, and here, you get to use it.

Night role: As an Encourager, you may select one player in the game and encourage them. That player will not have their night actions roleblocked or misdirected.

Level-One
Tony Duke: Town Doctor

You're Tony Duke, a former boxer turned trainer. You were a fair amateur in your prime, but your real accomplishments came in training Apollo Creed and Rocky Balboa. As any good trainer does, you're an expert in using the time between rounds to heal up your fighters.

Night role: As the Doctor, you may select one player in the game each night and protect them from nightkills for the night phase.

Knuckles
Thunderlips: Town Two-Shot Double-Voter

You're Thunderlips. Portrayed by Hulk Hogan, Thunderlips was an extremely popular professional wrestler who once held a charity match with Rocky Balboa. Your influence has shot through the roof as a result, and you intend to use it.

Night role: None, per se, but twice during the game, you have the ability to make your vote count twice. Message me prior to the day phases you wish to use the double-votes in.

Pepsi
Mason “The Line” Dixon: Town Two-Shot Counterpuncher

You're Mason “The Line” Dixon, and you have criminally bad timing. Despite being one of the most technically-sound fighters in the history of the sport, very few people respect you because you haven't had to beat many great boxers to get to the top. An exhibition against Rocky Balboa, though, swung the public into your corner, and you're grateful for the “rub” he gave you despite being 60 years old.

Night role: You have the ability to reverse fortunes in the game. Twice during the game, you may “counterpunch,” which uses someone's role against them. This may result in information, role-blocks, or even kills, though, so be judicious about when you use them. Message me on the nights you choose to “counterpunch.” A note: If you are roleblocked when you choose to use that option, you lose it for the remainder of the game.

Johnny Rebel
Anthony Gazzo: Town One-Shot Vigilante

You're Anthony Gazzo, a former loan shark from Philadelphia. You used to employ Rocky Balboa before he hit it big, and you're a bit player in his entourage now. For the most part, you're pretty clean, but you do still have some organized crime in your blood.

Night role: Once in the game, you may select one player and kill them. A note: If you are roleblocked when you choose to use that option, you lose it for the remainder of the game.

Spider Rico: Vanilla Townie

You're Spider Rico, a longtime journeyman boxer in the Philadelphia area. You've faced Rocky Balboa at least once, and now that you're down on your luck, you work at Rocky's restaurant as a dishwasher.

Night role: As a Vanilla Townie, you have no night role.

C.J. Gates
Marie: Vanilla Townie

You're Marie, a woman who Rocky Balboa first met in the original movie and who became his love interest in the final one. You were on the wrong path as a kid, but you now run a bar in Philadelphia and are grateful for the advice Rocky gave you when you were young.

George Washington Duke: Mafia Godfather

You're George Washington Duke, the epitome of a shady boxing promoter. Multiple times, you've tried to solicit the services of Rocky Balboa, but every time, he's turned you down. Having gotten frustrated over hearing the word 'no,' you've turned to more unfriendly means, using your stable of fighters for more than just in-ring violence.

Night role: As the Godfather, if investigated, you will always turn up innocent. Additionally, you have the capability to carry out kills yourself, though the Mafia itself is limited to one kill each night phase.

Tommy Gunn: Mafia Hitman

However, you lost most of your credibility when Balboa beat you in a street fight, and you're desperate to get it back...by any means necessary.

Night role: As the Hitman, you have the capability to kill one player each night. Duke can also kill, but the Mafia itself is limited to one kill each night phase.

Clubber Lang: Mafia Silencer (Bomb)

You're Clubber Lang, a badass who pities the fool. You're a former heavyweight champion with roots as a brawler on the streets of Chicago, and you were probably the most feared man on the planet before losing the title back to Rocky Balboa. Still, you have a weird way of making problems...disappear.

Night role: As the Silencer, you have the capability to prevent another player from posting in the next day phase. Additionally, if you are killed, you will take either the hammer or person carrying out the hit with you.

Ivan Drago: Third Party Serial Killer

Night role: As a Serial Killer, you have the capability to kill one player each night, and as a Third Party, you win when everyone else is dead.

Mod Diary

Day one

OK, let's get this thing started. I had a lot of fun putting the roles together, and I'm hoping it reflects in the game.

Pretty interesting anti-town group we've got here. TJ and Speede have played several games here before, but to the best of my knowledge, this is Hyatt's first on the APW boards. Callahan as Drago could fuck a lot of shit up given how experienced he is. I still remember the performance he put on in Spaceballs Mafia as the GF, and with both sides capable of killing, he could stick around a long time.

LOL at Havok's backwards post. Day one is usually devoid of any excitement except for joke votes, but Havok doing that and causing the speculation he did may prove to be one of the highlights of the entire game.

P.S.: T-Marv was right in that I'm not sadistic enough to introduce a post restriction on a character in a normal Mafia variant. There are certain roles I'm not huge on, and anything that restricts posting/activity by a town-aligned player is pretty high up on that list. Now, if this had been a BASTARD game? Different story!

As usual, day one ends in a no-lynch.

Reactions

I understand why Callahan chose not to use his kill, but it's a little surprising in hindsight. I get wanting to wait and see who the prime targets would be, but in a game where the mafia and third party can both kill each night, keeping another player alive for an extra day may come back to bite him.

Meanwhile, the mob QT is interesting. The debate about killing off C.J. or KJE is valid because they're both good, strong players, but in this case, the mafia has the rotten luck of them BOTH being vanilla!

As far as the town goes, not a bad first night. They only lose one vanilla townie, albeit someone who can contribute plenty of experience, and Gooch and Havok can now clear L-1 and T-Marv, respectively. The way this game is set up, the town can clear a lot of people in very short order barring roleblocks or the anti-town groups hitting a power player, so we'll see how this shakes out.

Rebel was the only one at risk of being mod-killed due to inactivity, but he responded to his prod. Unfortunately, the mafia choosing to silence him, a really solid play given his inactivity on day one, keeps him out of the game another day.

Day two

Couple of fun happenings early. Gooch pretty much outs himself as the cop, while Havok clears T-Marv. Meanwhile, in the scum QT, TJ correctly deduces Havok is the JOAT, but floats the idea of killing him, which would be disastrous since he's also bulletproof!

Always fun to see aggressive Mafia players like L-1, JamesV, and Chaz going at it like this. Little do they know that both Chaz and Gooch have, in fact, told the truth, and that all three of them, as well as Mark Mania, are town!

Both Chaz and Rebel inquired about using their one-shot vigilante actions during this day phase. I made the roles for night use, although I probably should have made that a little more clear in the role PM's. That said, if they opt to use their actions, and both the mafia and third party pull off successful kills, four or even five (if Hyatt is killed) characters may wind up getting wiped out, drastically altering the shape of the game!

JamesV did a lot that was questionable on day two. However, on night two, just when I think he couldn't possibly be dumber, he goes and does something like this...AND TOTALLY REDEEMS HIMSELF! (Dumb and Dumber FTW!)

In fact, the night actions as a whole were pretty smart on night two, even the mafia. KJE wasn't a bad idea for a kill; it goes off the beaten track and keeps everyone suspicious of everyone else. The problem is that JamesV used his role perfectly, and if the town believes him, they nail the godfather.

Day three

Short day here, naturally, as James and the town pounce on Speede and get the godfather. The only slip-up anyone in the town made was Knuckles revealing he had double-vote powers, which could hurt him.

At the conclusion of the day, I sent prods to Callahan, papapancho, and Trevor Hyatt. Hyatt was the only one not to respond, so he was replaced by Crown Jules effective day four.

Night three

Nothing too unusual; Knuckles was a low-risk kill, so not a bad plan there.

Paging Ivan Drago, paging Ivan Drago. I made this game thinking that both the mafia and Drago would be killing every night. Maybe Callahan is waiting for the mafia to take out some of the power roles so he doesn't have to take the risk himself.

Jules replaces Trevor Hyatt due to inactivity in both the thread and the scum QT.

Day four

Everything starts out perfectly for the anti-town players, as several hop on the papapancho lynch bandwagon. In fact, with his “hated” status, he was actually halfway towards being lynched with three votes.

HOWEVER, everything stops on a dime, and it's CALLAHAN who gets lynched and probably seals the Brandon Harvey award. Maybe he wouldn't have won had he chosen to use his nightkills on nights one through three, but the town certainly wouldn't be in as dominant a position.

Callahan flips third party, and we go into the night phase.

Night four

Actions

Chaz uses his one-shot kill on papapancho, a rare misstep in a very good game for him thus far. As such, he also loses his “hit the meat” night action, since that reveals Paulie's identity, and his one-shot encouragement action is also essentially useless, as there's no longer a roleblocker in the game!
As such, papapancho's roleblock of Jules fails, as does Gooch's copping of papapancho

FINALLY, we get a bloodbath on one of the nights! Now THIS is closer to what I anticipated when I put this game together. Yes, the town has ample means to find out who's innocent, but there are also a ton of things they need to dodge with characters who can kill every night or even as a one-shot.

I can't say I disagree with Chaz's instinct, as papapancho wasn't cleared and had been sending off some scum vibes. Still, had he used the “hit the meat” action, he'd have cleared him and Jules would have been roleblocked.

Great use of the one-shot by Rebel, and after tonight, the mafia cannot kill (with the exception of Jules's bomb).

Day five

Since T-Marv watched Jules silence Gooch, this is pretty straightforward. Jules gets lynched, and while he takes JamesV with him thanks to his bomb, the town wins.

AWARDS

MVP: Johnny Rebel

This could go to a ton of different players on the town team, and I've got a couple of honorable mentions. However, Rebel used his one-shot vig kill perfectly in taking out the scum's last person who could carry out hits. He died doing it, but thanks to how he used his role, I can't give this to anyone else in good conscience.

Honorable mentions: Chaz and JamesV both played very solid games. The only things preventing me from giving them MVP awards were small missteps. JamesV gave off serious scum vibes on day two, but made the play of the early part of the game by watching KJE the night she died. Meanwhile, Chaz misused his one-shot kill on papapancho, but got two of his "clearing" night actions out of the way early enough to clear both JamesV and T-Marv, who are usually scum targets.

Scum MVP: TJ

Did a nice job of slipping under the radar early. His problem came when Callahan stayed quiet during each night phase when he could have used his third party SK role to wreak serious havoc. Instead, the town narrowed down the possible scum pretty quick, and Rebel took TJ out with a vig kill. Still, that's not necessarily his fault, and he played a pretty good game.

Brandon Harvey Award: Trevor Hyatt

Whenever someone has to be modkilled or replaced, I feel like that clinches the award for that player. Thankfully, Jules stepped in and took over his role, otherwise this would have been an extremely lop-sided game, even moreso than it already was.

Honorable mention goes to Callahan, who could have caused mass confusion as Drago but did not use his kills before being lynched. Per the dead QT, though, it sounds like there were some real-life issues there, so that probably explains it. Still, for that reason, the game turned out far from how I anticipated it going.

MOD NOTES

First and foremost, I hope everyone who played enjoyed themselves. My goal was to make people forget my WKRP game, which I don't think lived up to anyone's expectations (including my own), and I think I did that.

In hindsight, the game seemed overwhelmingly-tilted towards the town. Most of that was because the third party SK who could kill every night didn't, but I probably should have added another scum player to the mix. That said, in past Mafia games the town has won here, it's been with EVERYTHING going exactly, perfectly right for the town, so maybe that had something to do with my setup as well.

First things first, helluva game AC, I think the town wasn't as over powered as much as the scum being under powered. Two guys had the ability to kill but only one could kill, which, if you read the scum QT, we had the plan to alternate/lay low when the other kills.

Then again, DEAN FUCKING AMBROSE AKA MICHAEL FUCKING CALLAHAN not being as active wouldn't exactly help. After night two, I knew it was gonna be an uphill battle to win because after losing a scum member, and noticing that Drago wasn't going to do anything until the numbers got lower/at all, it was gonna be rough.

Also, I bet myself that Trevor would flake, and I am happy to say I did not lose my own bet.

Great game by the town, I totally believe L1's vanilla claim. I looked at the flavor and figured that one other vanilla would show up.

I'll give props to Havok, he smelled my attempt at playing a Jules type game on my last day and I was pretty pissed. I thought I played a solid game and although I really didn't have competition for scum MVP as Speede lasted two days and Hyatt was Hyatt (I personally loved his, I've lasted to the end of games before comment) until Hyatt became Jules and he only had a day and by then we decided we were going down in flames.

Also, I was scum in WKRP too, just remembered that.

So I only played for one day/night cycle and we were pretty screwed by then. But I kept an eye on the game throughout and it was a good game by a solid town team.

I think maybe some consideration could be given to be some kind of blacklist, or warning list, where people who regularly flake on mafia games can be identified and mods can decide (at their discretion) whether to involve them. I've seen Hyatt do this now on AT LEAST two mafia games. I know RL can be disruptive, but if you don't think you can go the distance don't sign up for the game. But I leave that to the powers that be, just a suggestion.

Reading the roles I think the game set-up was well done. I think the Rocky role was way overpowered being bulletproof with essentially three role-cop shots, I think that was a bit excessive, and probably should have meant some imposition on the actual cop's role. Yeah, Rocky needs to be boss, since it's his game, but the imbalance could have been ironed out elsewhere.

Yup, I co sign with everyone else. This was a fun game, great set up and a perfectly modded game in terms of fIow and meeting the deadlines. One of the best games thus far, congratulations AC!

I do think Rocky was over powered. Everything else was in tip top shape. The suggestion which AC himself made of having four scum + Drago WOULD be unbalanced - especially if Drago was used up to his full potential.

The scum team was hurt by the fact Callahan didn't kill in addition to dealing with a superior town team... the town has never played this good, ever.

It's a scary thought for the next set of fuckers to draw red, lol

Seriously though, it was a good game. I kept up (as best I could) after being offed and enjoyed it. Some really nice investigating by the town to dwindle the numbers and figure out most of the people. Was kind of shocked when TMarv listed 7 people confirmed town (of 8) yet held off his vote on Jules. I understand why...but in a case where you've confirmed everyone but one, why not just lay down that vote right away? (A minor thing I had lol).

Unbalanced? Maybe, but only with Rocky. If Rocky had half his abilities, it might not have been as overpowered. Drago not doing anything hurt, but to each their own on whether or not he wanted to lay low.

As for the blacklist Jules mentioned...if we had more players (and it seems like our numbers are growing) I'd say that anyone who flakes on a game should HAVE to sit at least the next game out. Kind of like a punishment for flaking. But that might be the extent that we can go to, unless the person is consistent, in which case they can just be banned from playing lol

Awesome game AC. Sucks I got knocked out when I did, but glad that the town was able to win. I think the last time I played Mafia around here (which is longer than I thought it was) the town was still caught in that rut where they could never win. Great work on the modding, too. Everything was punctual and great write ups.
