::The Overdrive entrance set is being built. The ring has been constructed for the most part. All the extra seats are in place on the arena’s floor. The barricades have been erected. The announce tables have been put together. Lines have been run and the lines, cameras and sound equipment are all in place. The vendors have set up their shops and stands.::
::The many rows and aisles of seats inside Panama City’s something Arena are all empty, except for one person. She is a Chinese woman in her early to mid twenties, with long dark brown hair, which is tied in a ponytail. She is dressed simply, wearing a pair of jean shorts, an APW tank top, and black Nike Air sneakers.::
::The newest member of the Overdrive roster, “the Hong Kong Sensation” Amy Zing, is sitting in one of the upper aisle seats. She a bit more than a day and a half removed from her final match on Monday Night Meltdown. It was a brutal no disqualification, no count out match against Meltdown General Manager Sienna Harrison’s hand-picked wrestler, Robina Hood, which unfortunately ended in a loss. Now, she sits in the arena having watched the Overdrive crew set up for the show.::
::It has been a busy week for the woman who currently ranks 25th on the APW’s 25 Most Wanted, her first time on the list since her debut at One Night in Hell in October of 2012. On Monday, she was in Santiago, Chile for the first-ever wrestling show to come from the Movistar Arena, which was also her final Monday Night Meltdown appearance. She had a brutal back and forth match with Robina Hood, and after that, a medical exam to make sure she didn’t have a concussion or any injuries from the match., she was on a noon flight to Panama City, Panama to make her Overdrive debut.::
::Now, with the show hours away, Amy sits in the stands. She often does this, watching the ring crew set up the stage before a show. It seems to be part of her pre-show ritual, along with reading and stretching out a bit before the start of the show. She did it before Rasslemania, and a few times before Monday Night Meltdown, and even watched them take down the ring and set a few times. Now, on Overdrive, that pre-show tradition continues.::
“You know…”
::Her English is perfect, without a hint of a Chinese accent. Yet, she has an accent, a proper English accent.::
“Monday night did not go as well as I had hoped it would. Personally, I would like to have left my final Monday Night Meltdown with a victory, but that was not the case. Still, I take nothing away from Robina Hood. I have said she is a fierce and intense kind of wrestler. I respect her for her drive and her ability. It is only her choices in company I have questioned. You know, I wish she’d wake up and realize Sienna is just using her.”
“While I would have liked to have won, I have no regrets in losing. It was a fantastic and hard fought match. I think Robina and I seemed to bring the best out of each other. It may sound strange, but I am actually going to miss competing against her.”
::She smiles a bit.::
“However, I won’t miss us trying to beat the hell out of each other in brutal specialty matches. I’m still feeling the match from Monday.”
::Amy leans her head back and sighs a bit. It is less of a frustrated sigh and more of a melancholy sigh. She leans her head forward, watching the ring crew pull the canvas bearing over the ring.::
“However, this is a new show and a new day. Tonight, I make my debut on Overdrive. This is pretty big. I mean it is the big time. Overdrive is the flagship show of Action Packed Wrestling. For me to be here is just a huge step.”
“But, like they say, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Tonight is that first step here on Overdrive. Unfortunately, I haven’t even taken that step and I am already confused.”
“What is the Overdrive Championship? I mean is that the champion of Overdrive or is it just a name of a title? I mean I get the Xtreme Championship, which seems to be something akin to a hardcore title or specialty match title. I could be wrong on that though. Don’t really get the Suicidal Championship, but that may just be a naming issue and it’s not part of Overdrive, so doesn’t matter. I’m just saying the Overdrive Championship seems odd. There’s no Asylum Championship. I know that there is not a Monday Night Meltdown Championship. Just seems strange to me that there is an Overdrive Championship. Then again, I don’t really understand the whole World Heavyweight Championship and Undisputed Championship thing. I mean, are they both world titles or not? And can you really be an undisputed champion if there is another world title? Is there actually JUST an APW Champion? It’s just a little confusing is all I am saying. I just don’t really get it. I mean…”
::Amy stops herself from talking. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, then exhales slowly. She does this every time she starts to ramble. According to her, it helps her regain her train of thought and focus. Admittedly, she knows not going off on some sort of ranting and rambling about something would be better. However, try as she might, she just cannot seem to break that habit of hers. It never seems to have anything to do with nerves or stress. She just starts rambling about something. When she does, she usually stops herself, closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. As usual, she exhales slowly, then opens her eyes.::
“So anyway, yes, in a few hours, I debut on Overdrive. And yet it seems every time I debut on an APW television show the show gets a new General Manager. I mean when I debuted on Monday Night Meltdown, Alexander Duvall became the General Manager. Now when I debut on Overdrive, there will be a new General Manager named.”
“Personally, I’m hoping for that rarest of General Managers, that sort of neutral tough but fair kind of GM. For the five months I was on Monday Night Meltdown we had that sort of power abusing vindictive GM in Alexander Duvall and Sienna Harrison. I really have no idea what Logan Alexander, Aubrey J Parker or myself did to piss them off, but we did it well. They just went right after us.”
“Of course, then you have that one that really tries to give the fans what they want and seems to somewhat support the people that the crowd likes. Those people don’t last too long , or usually get beaten up a lot more often than the power abusing GM. I think that’s a bit ironic.”
::The former Playboy cover girl rubs her chin in thought.::
“Neutral might be interesting. At the very least, someone who knows wrestling from more than a business stand point would be good.”
::She stops rubbing her chin and slides her fingers through her ponytail to keep it from getting tangled up.::
“But I am not debuting on Overdrive to be the new General Manager or to see who it is. No, I am making my in ring debut right here in Panama City. And I am making my debut against a guy who has pretty much done everything here in Action Packed Wrestling, Michael Lively in his final Overdrive match.”
“I’ve never met Michael Lively, and personally I think everything he says is the very definition of sexist and mysogenist. However, despite all that, this is a guy who’s arguably one of the best in Action Packed Wrestling. He achieved the Grand Slam and I am still trying to win my first ever championship. Despite whatever he says, I have to at the very least respect what Lively has been able to accomplish here in Action Packed Wrestling.”
::Amy leans forward in her seat a little.::
“So you don't mind stepping int othe rign with women, despite your opinion of them? Well that’s good, because I’d hate to think I was just wasting your time more than you already think I am. I really do not care who I step into the ring with, as long as I get the chance to step into the ring.”
“That’ is after all why I came to the APW, to compete, to challenge myself. Right now, I am more than a little sore from the match I had at Monday Night Meltdown. Robina and I beat the absolute bloody hell out each other all over that ring. But you want to know something Michael?”
::“The Hong Kong Sensation” smiles.::
“It doesn’t matter to me all that much.”
“Now you don’t know me. So allow me to introduce myself.”
::She looks over the arena, as if trying to visualize all the people that will be sitting in the seats when Overdrive airs that night.::
“My name is Amy Zing.”
“My parents are Yat-sen and Zizhen Zhao. My brother is Lui Zhao, a lawyer and father of two, my niece and nephew. I was born in Hong Kong, which, despite being in the People’s Republic of China, was under the control of Great Britain when I was born due to the British victory in the Opium War, which is why my accent is more British and less every Asian wrestler ever who seems incapable of speaking English or understanding American culture and therefore must be comically educated in it. My family moved to the United States in 1999 when Great Britain returned control of Hong Kong to China like many in Hong Kong. Some did it out of fear, while others, like my parents, did it for business. I am a legal citizen of the United States.”
::She smiles.::
“But I doubt you really care about my personal life, because it really isn't about you and how great you are and how everyone should worship you. No, I think you want to know more about how anything I say pertains to you and our match tonight.”
::Amy rubs her hands together, then steeples her fingers. She starts to move her thumbs in small circles as her fingers are steepled. She stops and presses her hands together. With her thumbs against each other, she spreads her hands open like wings before rubbing her palms together.::
“In Chinese folklore, the phoenix, or Fenghuang as it is known, is associated with the feminine while the dragon is associated with the masculine. In China, the phoenix is considered the ruler of all birds. Due to the way artists have depicted the phoenix, it bears a resemblance to a rooster, which is why it is nicknamed the “Chinese rooster”, and appears on our zodiac as a rooster.”
“The phoenix has a unique ability. When it comes time for the phoenix to die, it burns in fire. But, rather than pass from this world, it is reborn from the ashes. For this reason, the phoenix is seen in many cultures as a symbol of rebirth and immortality.”
“I associate myself with the phoenix. I mean my finisher is called the Fenghuang Kick and one of my big moves is all the Phoenixsault. However, that association is more than just something I can name moves for. It is more spiritual.”
::Amy slides her hand over her hair again.::
“Like the phoenix is continually reborn from the ashes of its own fire, I am that type of person who can crash and burn, but will still get up. Michael Lively, as long as I can stand up, as long as I can continue the match, I will. It’s just who I am.”
“The other thing you should know about me, Michael, is that I will never quit. I will never give up. I know it may sound cliché, but I refuse to submit or surrender. I have no problems with losing. It happens. I accept that. But, I would only consider myself defeated if I give up in the match. I do not consider it just giving up in the match, but also on myself and all my fans.”
::She stand up, looking over the empty seats. She points out to them, as if she can see the fans who will be sitting in them and cheering as she points to them.::
“There is nothing more important to me than all my fans. Since the day I first stepped into a wrestling ring, in a high school gymnasium in front of a crowd of maybe 50 people, they have stood by me. Through every win, and, more importantly, through every loss, they have stood behind me, cheering every time I walk out to the ring.”
::She stops pointing and lowers her hand.::
“It is as much for them as for me that I do what I do. Through everything they have stood by me. And while I may not win every single night, both they and I know that I will only truly lose, that I will only truly fail when I give up. Without those fans, I am just some person fighting in an empty building, and that just seems silly and pointless.”
::“The Hong Kong Sensation” looks over the arena, over the completed set of Overdrive, for the first time in her career. She then looks upward and smiles. She closes her eyes again.::
“I am beat to hell Michael Lively. I just got finished feeling the aftermath of the ladder match at Rasslemania and you can definitely believe that I am feeling all the bumps and bruises from my final match on Monday Night Meltdown with Robina Hood. Yet, despite that, I plan on walking out on my first Overdrive and giving you everything I have left. I may be beaten up, but I am still going to fight.”
“It doesn’t matter how beat up or bruised I am, I will still wrestle. It’s probably not a great long term strategy, but it’s just how I am. I will go until I cannot go any longer.”
“Every time I go out to the ring, I give everything I have to give. Win, lose or draw, I give everything I have. To do any less would be a disappointment and an insult to myself, but more importantly my fans and my opponent. Whether I like the person standing across from me or not does not matter. I give them everything I have no matter what.”
“The fact that I have respect for what you’ve been able to accomplish here in APW does not mean I will take it easy on you or hold back.”
::She lowers her head. Her eyes open as she turns and looks at the fully constructed Overdrive set. This is the first time she has ever seen it in person as opposed to on television.::
::She looks forward, sounding a little mad and a more than a little insulted.::
“However, your ability and your accomplishments are all I really have any respect for. I mean really, you are kind of an asshole. I can see why you have an issue with women. I really doubt that attitude is getting you any, other than what you have to pay for, and even then, I’d think the money wouldn’t be worth it."
“I find your stance on women to be prehistoric and absolutely barbaric. Now maybe I am not a huge fan of intergender wrestling, but I will do it regardless. I am not here just to look pretty. I do not walk out wearing some costume that looks like I went crazy with a bedazzler or wear tons of make up out there. I sell a lot of hats and t-shirts, and I really hope it has more to due with my fans liking me more for who I am and what I do as opposed to the fact I have breasts. I fail to see how we are inferior to men as without us, there’d be very little life on this planet.”
“I may have moved to the United States, but I am so bloody goddamned sick and tired of people trying to make me feel ashamed for being Chinese. Do you know how many wrestlers there are from China in the business? None. That makes me one of a kind Lively. I am proud of my heritage. I try to reflect that in two of my moves, the Silk Road and Nihao. The Silk Road was named fro a trade route between China and Rome. Nihao is Chinese for “Hello”. It is just so sickening to hear people go on about how I should feel terrible for being Chinese or how bad China is. Yes, it has problems, but so does the United States. China has over four thousand years of history. It was old when Rome was still a small group of huts, not even on the verge of being an empire, let alone a republic. China invented paper, zen, tea, ink, fireworks, pasta. It gave the world the teachings of Confucius and the greatest military strategy guide ever written, The Art of War. China built the Great Wall long before many of the other well known Greco-Roman monuments. China owns most of the US debt. It is one of the fastest growing economies in the world. So yes, I may live in America, but I was born in the People’s Republic of China and I am proud of my heritage and nothing you say or do is going to make me feel any thing different about my heritage, you misogynistic, xenophobic, racist piece of garbage.”
::Amy manages to catch herself in the course of her ranting. Again, she closes her eyes, takes a deep breath and exhales slowly.::
“This is your final Overdrive. I can’t really say after hearing you that I am sorry to see you leave. I am going to do everything I can to make sure your last Overdrive ends with you on your back and me standing over you after I kicked your damn smug head off. Tonight I will show you, everyone on the Overdrive roster and more importantly, the fans here in Panama, why I am simply Amy Zing.”
::Amy turns from the seat, walking down the aisles of seats towards the arena floor. She hops the barricade and walks around the ring. She looks over the ring. Her hand reaches out, touching the ropes of the Overdrive ring for the first time. Even though she’s been in the ring before, this is a new ring to her. She then walks up the entrance way. She stops and turns around to face the arena again.::
“Tonight Michael, I want to show everyone why I am simply Amy Zing. YOu want to make me your bitch in that ring? It may end up with you being mine. You want to compare me to a dog? Keep in mind that if you mistreat a dog, they bite back. Remember, it is not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of the fight in the dog, and I am coming to fight. So with that in mind, I wish you luck tonight. I will see you in the ring Michael.”
::Amy turns and walks into the back.::
::The many rows and aisles of seats inside Panama City’s something Arena are all empty, except for one person. She is a Chinese woman in her early to mid twenties, with long dark brown hair, which is tied in a ponytail.
