::The only zoo in San José, Costa Rica, is the Simón Bolivar Zoo. The zoo is named for Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios Ponte y Blanco, more commonly known as Simón Bolívar, the great South American military hero known as “El Libertador”, “The Liberator”, who helped lead Venezuela, Peru, Columbia, Panama (which was part of Columbia at the time) and, the country that would be named for him, Bolivia, to independence from Spain. The zoo is home to a large variety of animals and plants species from the nation of Costa Rica and international.::
::It is a warm and sunny day in the capitol city of Costa Rica. The average April temperature in the city is generally in the area of the low 40 degrees Celsius, which is equivalent of the low 80 Fahrenheit degree temperature range. The weather is beautiful.::
::With that in mind, it is not surprising to see many people in the zoo. Some are tourists, seeing the sights of the city. Many more of the people visiting are locals, here for various reasons, be they just having a day at a zoo, educational or recreational.::
::It is most likely the warm weather and beautiful day that has drawn Amy Zing outside and to the zoo. The past two weeks was a rather hectic for “the Hong Kong Sensation”, seeing her in Toronto, Ontario, Canada for Rasslemania IX, then literally a continent away just a week later in Santiago, Chile for her final Monday Night Meltdown appearance, then barely two days later in Panama City, Panama for her first Overdrive match. Indeed a hectic two weeks, but also rather disappointing. She came close, but ultimately was unable to capture the North American Championship at Rasslemania, then she left Meltdown with a loss to Robina Hood, only to debut on Overdrive with a loss to Michael Lively. However, if these setbacks have affected her, she is not showing it.::
::She has spent most of the last two weeks doing promotional work. Before Rasslemania IX, it was autograph sessions, fan interactions, radio and television interviews. When Meltdown went to Chile, it was more of the same. Even when she went to Panama, she had a few promotional duties for the show. However, she spent at least one day in the arena the show was to take place from, watching the stage and ring being set up, and addressed herself then.::
::Perhaps it is the weather or just the chance to sightsee or maybe just needing to be away from the ring for a while that has brought Amy Zing outside. Whatever the case, “the Hong Kong Sensation” is walking through the zoo.::
::She is dressed in a pair of denim shorts, a light blue tank top under an open white blouse, a pair of sneakers, and a fedora style hat. She is wearing the black fannypack, with a bottle of water inside, that she wears when she jogs.::
::Amy wanders through the zoo. She approaches to an enclosure with a wide open field of grass. Two adult zebras walk along the field with a younger one. One adult stops to eat some grass while the other stands, looking forward and moving its ears around. The child stands around.::
“You have a lovely family Buckson.”
::She turns from the zebras, trying not to look too embarrassed that she seemingly just compared her opponent for Thursday’s Overdrive and his family to members of the horse family.::
“That didn’t come out right did it?”
::She sighs a little, trying not to look too embarassed.::
“Let me try that again. What I meant is that you have a lovely family. Now you and I have never really met or had much of a conversation. I met them at Rasslemania. Your wife, Annabelle, is just a lovely person.”
“Your son, J-Mac, was very nice, though, and I hate to say this, pretty sure he’s seen my Playboy spread. I am basing this on the that when I met him, he was trying really hard not to look at me. It was a little awkward and it's happened a few times with people who've seen the spread and met me. Either that, or she's just shy. I don't know. Never did find out what J-Mac was short for.”
“But I really like them in the brief moments I met them. I think it’s sweet that you and Annabelle were high school sweethearts. It sounds a little cliché, but you know what? It is the best kind of cliché. To know someone that long, that kind of love? That’s a beautiful thing.”
::Amy moves away from the zebras, walking along the walkway.::
“I’m looking forward to this match. There’s no animosity, no General Manager, no rivalry, no animosity, no hate. There’s no guy going on about his stupid sexist beliefs, trying to prove his superiority. There are just two competitors stepping into the ring to face each other. And personally, I prefer that.”
::She stops at a large open enclosure with grass, a small pond and a few trees. A large grey African elephant fans its ears, cooling itself off.::
“You’re a big man Buckson. There’s no real way to ignore that. You grew up on a farm where you worked most of your life. You played sports in high school. You are just a big, strong guy.”
“However, I fail to see why that should make you stupid or dumb. It might be the accent that causes people to think that about you, or maybe it’s just something people associate with your background. I’ve heard you speak, and you’ve never struck me as stupid or dumb or anything like that.”
::The elephant swishes its trunk for a moment. The trunk wraps around a small pile of hay and straw. Using its trunk, the elephant lifts the food into its mouth.::
“What I see when I look at you Buckson, I do not see some big, dumb, Southern redneck hick. I mean, yes, you are big and strong, and you are from the South, but you’ve never really demonstrated any reason for me to assume you are a redneck or unintelligent.”
“When I look at you, what I see is really what America was built on. You have a family, a piece of land to call your own and you a pursuing your dream. What you have is what America was built on. Maybe it’s cheesy and hooky and all that, but it’s really the best kind. You married your high school sweetheart. How is that not like text book America? Everyone loves that kind of relationship. I know I do.”
“I’m almost jealous of you to be honest. I mean, yeah, I have a home, but it’s an apartment so I don’t technically own it, I rent. But on the plus note, I don’t have to wake up early and toil in hopes I can grow enough to sell and provide for my family. And I don’t have livestock, though my apartment does allow pets. And really, I’ve yet to find that special someone I really want to share my life with. I date. I have been in relationships, but never found that right person.”
::Amy closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, managing to catch herself as she starts rambling and ranting. She exhales slowly and opens her eyes. She starts walking from the elephant enclosure.::
“Anyway…it’s sort of weird, but I find the two of us have a few similarities. Both of us are often underestimated and subjected to stereotypes.”
::She stops, looking at another open enclosure. Inside another field of grass with light tree cover are two peacocks. One has blue feathers, with a beautiful, colorful tail, indicating a male. The other has a dull grey plumage, making it female. Male peacocks have color plumage, which they use to attract mates, and, unfortunately, predators. Females are duller in color, which helps keep them safe from predators. Amy looks at the birds. The male spreads its tail feathers, moving with its strut-like walk.::
“People see you as big and strong and when they hear your accent, they immediately write you off as an uneducated Southerner. Yet how many of those people have you put on their backs? How many people have thought they were better than you, only to see you beat them in the ring? You are big and strong. That is rather obvious. There’s no denying that. However, I’ve seen that you have the brains to use that size and power of yours.”
“You are a fantastic wrestler Buckson. Time and time again, you’ve pulled off upsets and beaten people who thought you had no chance against them. Yet here you are, climbing the ladder higher and higher. Knoxville came close to winnign the North American Championship this week. You are number one contender to the APW Tag Team Championships, and I have no doubt in my mind that sooner or later, you and Tommy Knoxville will win that championship and be Tag Team Champions.”
I mean it may not be next week, because I really can’t take anything away from the Dying Breed, because they have proven to be a really good tag team and definitely earned those titles they now carry. However, I’m confident that you and Knoxville will be Tag Team Champions at some point in the future.”
::Her eyes look downward towards the top bar of the railing of the peacock enclosure. She places a hand on the railing, wrapping her fingers around the bar.::
“When people look at me, listen to me, they think I lack passion, desire or aggression. I act respectful towards people. I try to be nice. I try not to brag about what I’ve accomplished, because honestly, I have not done anything really that major. Yes, I have had a few wins here and there, but I’ve never had that huge victory or championship win.”
“Yet when I step into the ring, I prove my passion and my desire. Win, lose or draw, I leave everything out in that ring. I get knocked down, but as long as I can, I will keep getting back up. I have passion, I have desire and I have heart. I try to prove that every time I step into the ring for a match. I don’t like being aggressive in my day-to-day life, but I shown I can be aggressive in that ring. I am willing to risk injury and take risks, I keep fighting and I never quit. I think all that that shows my passion and my desire.”
“I get the weirdest comments based on my being Chinese. I’ve had opponents try to insult me using stereotypes associated with other cultures. Time and time again, people seem to try and make me feel guilty for being Chinese for reasons I cannot understand. I fail to see why my heritage should be an issue. It makes no sense to me.”
::The tone in her voice becomes angry and upset, well past the point of insult.::
“The biggest one that annoys me is the fact I did Playboy and everyone tries to get to me by just writing me off as a slattern or a loose woman. I am tired of even apologizing for it. I didn’t do it to try and win fans or to advance my career or anything like that. I did it to empower myself and project a different side of me. I see no reason why I should feel guilty of doing something Marilyn Monroe, considered one of the most beautiful and desired women of all time, did and was proud of. Now I am sorry if people do not approve, but I do not recall needing permission to live my life how I see fit to do so. I…”
::Amy bites her lip and closes her eyes, catching herself as she starts to ramble. Taking a deep breath, she exhales slowly to calm herself. Her voice returns to normal.::
“Sorry about that. It’s just rather frustrating. I’m sure you know the feeling."
::She turns away from looking at the peacocks.::
“I respect you Buckson. I respect you both professionally and as the person I have seen you to be. That is actually part of the reason I am looking forward to wrestling this week at Overdrive.”
::She sighs, looking upward towards the sky. She closes her eyes and smiles. She seems at peace. It is as if, despite the odds and the height, weight and strength advantage she is giving up in this match, the idea of stepping into the ring with Buckson Gooch is almost a serene idea.::
“It feels like such a long time since I have had a match where nothing was on the line. No manipulating General Manager lurking in the background to laugh and celebrate when her chosen one beats me or her machinations allow her chosen one to escape with a victory, or she is just screwing with me because she’s a terrible person. There is no animosity between the two of us. There is no hatred between us. We are not at each other’s throats due to either a physical or verbal insult. We are not trying to destroy each other. We are just two competitors that the fans like facing each other in a one-on-one match.”
“Honestly, I really need a match like this. With all the issues I had with Sienna Harrison and Robina Hood and then to come to Overdrive and all the things Michael Lively said, I’ve just been in a really negative type of environment. I don’t like that. I mean I’m not that type of person.”
::She lowers her head and opens her eyes.::
“All there is in this match is two competitors stepping into the ring to compete. I mean yeah, it’s a little bit of David versus Goliath, because you are taller than me, outweigh me by a bit and you’re probably stronger than me. Still, that challenge makes this match just all that more interesting.”
“Really that’s what this match you and I have at Overdrive boils down to. We’re wrestling each other for the challenge. Not because we’ve been feuding or because we’ve developed this sheer hatred for each other on any of that negative stuff. This is just you and I going into the ring, giving the fans what I hope will be a great match, and one of us walks away with the victory while the other tries again.”
“You know what? Maybe I pull it off and manage to catch you off guard for a sudden pin or I connect with the Fenghuang Kick and pull off what I am sure everyone will call an upset. Maybe you nail that devastating Razorback Scrambler or the Sweet Tea Drop and you overpower me to pick up the victory. Either way, I think this is going to be an exciting match and really good match.”
“I don’t know about you, but honestly, if I do pull off the upset, I’m not going to dance around the ring and celebrate like I just pulled off winning the World Heavyweight Championship. I’m not going to go on and on about having beaten you, not because it means nothing or anything like that, but because I am not the type to brag. If I lose, then I lose, but I lost to a guy who I know will have earned it and will more than likely not rub it in my face every chance he gets because you don’t strike me as the type to do that.”
::Turning from the peacocks, Amy leans against the rail that helps to separate the zoo goers and the enclosure, looking to see if any of the flora and fauna, both native to Costa Rica and imported from other areas around the world strike her interest. She sees something and walks towards it.::
::Laying on a rock formation inside a deeply dug enclosure is the king of the beast, the majestic lion. The large predatory cat lays in the warm sun, asleep.::
“I may respect you Buckson, but I have respected a lot of opponents. The fact I respect them has never once meant I held anything back or did not go to the absolute best of my ability. On the contrary, it makes me fight harder because there is a part of me that wants to earn their respect. I don’t know if it is a shallow need or not, but I was raised to believe respect is never to be given, only earned. I want to earn it.”
::The sleeping lion yawns, its mouth opening wide, teeth showing. The large cat stretches out and shakes its mane. It opens its mouth a again as it stands up, looking out over the zoo.::
“This is size and power versus heart and speed. It is two relative newcomers, and I say that because we’ve both only been here for a few months, facing each other. It is, again as I said, that David versus Goliath type of match. This is going to be a definite clash of styles with you being a big, strong brawler and me being a high-flyer, martial arts type with a never give up and never say die attitude. All of that is what will make our match an exciting and definitely an interesting match up.”
“So at Overdrive, I will step into the ring against you and I will fight. I will give you and all the fans in San José and watching around the world everything I have. Win, lose, or draw, I will give you everything I have in my best attempt to kick your head off and show you, the fans here in San José and watching on television why I am simply Amy Zing.”
::Amy looks towards the camera and smiles. It is a friendly kind of smile.::
“So Buckson, I wish you the best of luck in our match this Thursday at Overdrive. I’m looking forward to it and I will see you there.”
::With that, Amy moves away from the lion and continues through the zoo. The scene fades out as she walks.::
