So they (being Hollywood) is about to start production on a remake for the movie "Weird Science". I like this idea tremendously because I was a big fan of the original. Some times I think remakes help because some movies can just be done better with today's technology. I am one of the apparent few who believe Disney will do VERY good with StarWars. Why wouldn't they? If it's a success, they make more money from it. Disney owns Marvel and Ninja Turtles as well and I think they'll work those with great care. I also am a big fan of the newer Planet of The Apes movie. Rise of The Apes. It was different but it was so fucking good as far as making you care for that Monkey! I want one so bad...What are some other movies you wouldn't mind seeing remade? With Evil Dead being redone and a few others...I'd like to hear opinions on it all. I'm watching the Total recall movie and am very bored. I think it's because it has a really dull music score that overpower the audio throughout, cause the effects and acting aren't horrible.

Yeah that remake SUCKED. Total garbage that neither leading lady got nude. I like nudity! Another movie I wish they'd remake is "Howard The Duck" that movie is STILL something I go back to and watch. That and "A Gnome Named Norm" which was a favorite of mine in 1990. Labryinth is the only classic I love that should never be touched.

I was a big fan of the Daredevil character. I'd like to see that get a reboot. A not necessarily a reboot/remake but I'd enjoy a Firefly/ Serenity 2 movie

Super Mario Bros. is something that will never get redone. What would make a good storyline even? The first and only movie I thought was a different take and I enjoyed it for what it was but it was garbage. Ghostbusters, I was never a big fan but I think it has potential for a big payday if done because the technology these days could do some amazing stuff with it.

I struggle to think of a re-make that was better than the original. Not saying there aren't any, I just can't think of one.
I'm not a fan of re-makes, I think it's lazy film making; it's a sad indictment of where Hollywood is that a lot (too much) of its output in the last ten years has been re-makes.
Edit: I do prefer the Nolan Batman re-boot to the Burton/Schumacher series, but not sure they count as re-makes in the strict sense.

Some of these suggestions are curious. Why would you want a Ghostbusters re-boot? If you want to watch Ghostbusters, go watch the original. They'll never re-capture that magic with a new cast. Same applies to the TR re-make - Colin Farrell is just never going to be able to bring that over-acting x-factor that Arnie brings, plus some of that nostalgia is lost by these re-makes.
I've always been surprised Hollywood never re-made Beetlejuice (I'm not a fan of Tim Burton, but this is one of the all-time great films), but I'm glad they haven't---- nobody is going to able to replicate Michael Keaton's performance in a way that improves or even matches up.
They make money though, so s'pose that's the explanation.

So maybe a new reboot can be expected, the working title is "The Man Without Fear".

I hate remakes, but then I hate the original shit that's coming out too so it's a catch-22. Who wants to watch Battleships?
What's going to stop me from going to a cinema ever again is when they remake Stephen King's Carrie. That film was incredible supernatural horror and they're going to fuck it up.

Callahan...I hate to be the guy to tell you this...
While I agree that some movies are better left Classics. There are cult favorites like "Weird Science" that could be explored more not. Using a big hit from yesteryear like Ghostbusters and complete REBOOTing it makes no real sense. Better to just make a new movie in the series with the old cast and have a new character like they've portrayed in a video game recently.
"Lover Boy" with Patrick Demsey from back in the day, that's another that could be redone to better fit a newer time when that style of movie would be more appreciated. "Water World" I've always said if it had been done in the 2000s it would have been a smash hit because it connected more to the current events of the 2000s where Global Warming was a concern of high media at the time. So remakes, reboots, some just need some updating with extension to the series. Like Terminator did. They didn't reboot, they just added too. Not great but not trash either...Not like Total Recall...

Remakes can be better sometimes Ocean's Eleven comes to mind, now whether you liked the sequels or not doesn't really matter but the 1st remake was awesome. I mean there were others like The Fly, and Scarface that all were better than the original.

Yeah Scarface is a good one as well. Most people still don't know that Al Pacino was a remake. Different story though but still. That made waves in so many different outlets.

What drives me crazy about remakes is that they hardly wait any time between remakes anymore. At what point do we have enough Batman movies to last us an eternity? I know we're all still trying to get Arnold as a Batman villain out of our head...but come on!

I would have to agree, if they got the right people to play the parts. Not sure who Aries could be played by, but as long as they have Vin diesel Playing Kratos (Best one I can think of atm) I'll see it. Even better if they cast another badass actor, like Ron Perlman, to play Zeus.
Back on the subject of Remakes though, I do disagree with alot of them. Hell they did 2 live action Snow white remakes, and i'm not going to see either one of them (seriously....snow white...WTF).
But for a remake that I felt was both hot shotted, but needed, was Amazing spiderman. As much as I do like (not love) the original trilogy, they did shoot themselves in the foot with 3, and not entirely with that 1 scene, but more like they killed off 2 characters who could/would still have further arcs. so while I would like to have waited a few more years before the remake was done, i'm not opposed to it. Especially since I wanted to see the lizard in the original trilogy in the first place.

There are a ton of remakes that were better than the original. John Carpenters The Thing was miles above the original. As mentioned The Fly was a remake. A more recent one I like to argue is The Ammityville Horror. I liked the original a lot, but the Remake was damn good. Rob Zombies Halloween films aren;t everyones cup o' tea, but Halloween 3,5 Resurrection, H20 aren't exactly good either. After two, that series is very weak for a big franchise. Definitely the weakest of the big three slashers.
Not all remakes should strive to be different either. What I have liked about the Platinum Dunes films is that they are revisiting characters we love. The Friday the 13th Remake was a love letter to the franchise. And the Nightmare on Elm Street, actually said "You know what, we aren't implying shit. Freddie molested kids." And had a lot of winks and Easter eggs to the franchise. Say you want about Michael Bay as a director, but as a producer there isn't a film he's remade That I didn't like. Which is why I still have very high hopes for TMNT.
The Total Recall remake bothered me a lot, but not for being a remake. I thought about this since my original post and I think I finally have it figured it out. It wasn't a bad movie. It wasn't a terrible remake even. They had the chick with three tits even though it was completely out of the tone and context of the film. It was just generic. That's an issue ALL Science Fiction movies have had since the 2000's started.
Color pallets are virtually non existent. There seems to only be shades of white, grey, and black. The cars all look the same, the sound effects are all the same, the technology all looks the same.
Science Fiction has focused to much on the science part and not enough on the fiction aspect. The Original Total Recall was colorful. Mars was red, brown, murky and looked totally different than earth. There were mutants and the titted hookers. There was comedy. It was fun.
Today people seem to only make existential dystopian films. I have news for you, 1984 was boring before you tried re making it 200 times.
Science fiction used to be fun and vibrant. Back to the Future 2 was a great looking, futuristic film that didn't bore your eyes, even though the exteriors became hideous to reinforce the plot.
I think the last really great Science Fiction was Firefly/Serenty. The mix of old west and technology of the future combined with humor made for an amazing show that was over too many peoples heads.
It's a wide issue that I cannot fault Total recall for. It didn't suck because it was a remake, it sucked because it fell into a generic formula that Steven Spielberg created and no one has tried to be different in form.
GHostbusters- A remake would be dumb. However the sequel that has supposedly been shopped around for the last ten years or so has great potential. I am a huge fan. I once made a uniform and proton pack with my family and won a comicon costume contest with it.
I would like to see the original cast training new kids. I would like to see any number of Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, Seth Rogen, Justin Long, Adam Scott, Chris O'Dowd, Rob Cordry, Charlie Day, or Jason Seudekis in the roles of the new blood.
There is a lot of potential especially following the video game in canon. With today's effects it is a no brainer.
Still haven't seen the Evil Dead and patiently waiting for it. Despite all of the summer movies and Marvel Sequels it's my most anticipated movie next to Man of Steel.
Man of Steel: Stoked for it. It looks like the Superman movie that I always wanted. IF remakes weren't in vogue than I may not have been given this film. It seems like it will be 10000x better that that craptastic SEQUEL Superman Returns.
I gues the point of this was to say that I like remakes, and that a they aren't all terrible movies just for being a remake. There are plenty bad ones too, but that's because most of them are made by inexperienced filmmakers just trying to add bulk to their list of films.

Rude...But I like what you said about remakes and Superman. I was never a fan of Superman but I find myself wanting to see it more every commercial for it. Just the fact that two people who played Robin Hood play Superman's Fathers is awesome. I can argue all day for Kevin Costner, not sure people's beef with him. But you talk about Michael Myers like that again and...I will dookie on your super hero costume.

As far as be a successful and entertaining franchise in addition to it's longevity in pop culture I place them as this.
1) A Nightmare on Elm Street-Freddie Kruger 2) Friday the 13th-Jason Vorehees 3) Halloween- Micahel Myers 4) Texas Chainsaw Massacre- Leatherface 5) Scream- Ghostface 6) Childs Play- Chucky 7) Hellraiser- Pin head 8) Norman Bates 9) Candyman 10) Hannibal Lecter
Yes the first two Halloween films are classics. Without them the genre would never have been the same. However as the years went on the franchise dipped in quality, and never came back up. Do I still enjoy the bad movies? Yes. I even paid money to see resurrection.
The difference is that A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th, continued to put out quality films that never dipped in quality like the Halloween movies. What made Michael so scary at first, was that he was just a guy. A very dangerous very crazy guy. The additions of Season of the Witch, the psychic kid, and cults took the reality of the character into directions he didn't need to go. Not to mention in Resurrection He kills Lori in about two minutes into the movie. Plus she is in a mental institution, which doesn't go with the ending of H20. I really do consider ROb Zombies take on the franchise to be better than all of the sequels after 2.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has had a ton of bad movies too, but it keeps on rolling. I stand by the first two remakes and have yet to see the latest addition. It's been sitting there on the comp, just haven't had time. But the original, is about the only good one of the first run. Tobe Hooper is really a hack if there ever was one IMO.
I would put Ghostface and Scream higher on the list if the 4th film was a better box office draw. I have high hopes for the tv show, but given that it's Mtv I will prbably be let down. All 4 of these movies were excellent and reignited the genre.

To me Halloween 4 & 5 was the shining moment of the series minus the masks. I enjoyed 6 and H20 but yeah...Resurrection kind of blew! Although when Kash and Knuckles first came to APW we were in a group with Nate Bishop. The group was called "DangerTainment" which was also the Production Company Busta Rhymes owned in Resurrection.
The scene where Busta is dressed as Myers and Myers follows him..Funny as fuck! Then their fight scene was pretty cool as well. Parts of that movie were okay, most of it blew. I get what you're saying though. Personal preference more so from me. Friday The 13th didn't ever do it for me, I hated that I shared a name with that guy. Although Jason Takes Manhattan, black dude who boxed? Rooftop. Great scene.
