Scene opens in Long Island, New York, at a university.
T.J. Buckles: Look at Ron Rufio. Too busy wanting to become a pro wrestler to pass his classes.
Wally West: That guy's a loser and he knows it's just a pipe dream. He'll be homeless as soon as his family dies.
They're right about him failing classes and Ron hears them. He knows that people think of him as a dreamer but he intends to prove them wrong. He thinks back to his childhood, to his life until now.
Ron Rufio was born on May 31, 1988 to Peter and Wendy Rufio. They were loving parents. They were also pro wrestlers. They were a feared tag team and held several Tag Team Championships over the years. They were very well known for their technical and scientific wrestling styles. However, on August 8, 1992, they were on a plane to Sacramento, CA, for a title defense and the plane was hijacked by terrorists and, because the terrorists didn't know how to fly, the plane went down in the ocean. Peter and Wendy Rufio were killed.
Ron was in a foster home for a very short time. But it wasn't long before he was adopted by His his aunt and uncle, Beru and Owen Rufio. His uncle had previously been a feared wrestler in his youth, also known for his mat-based style. But, being several years older than his brother, he was now retired. He was able to stay home and raise his nephew with his wife.
When Ron was eighteen, he informed his uncle that he would like to be a pro wrestler and asked him if he could train him like he had trained his parents. Now, Uncle Owen was getting old but, in the end, decided he'd train Ron as a last act in the wrestling business.
However, Uncle Owen wasn't prepared for one thing. Ron Rufio couldn't wrestle the family style to save his life. Preforming most wrestling holds correctly was like doing Calculus to him. He mastered a few, like the Spinning Toe Hold, but wrestling holds weren't his strong suit and, after a year or so, Uncle Owen realized Ron was never getting any better. He almost gave up. But Ron had such heart and desire, he couldn't.
Over time, he discovered something Ron was better at than anyone else. Ron was great at receiving and getting back up no matter what. Uncle Owen, who still followed pro wrestling, decided to train Ron in a style he had never learned himself: hardcore. And it turned to be something Ron Rufio was very good at.
You see, what these teens didn't realize was that Ron, at twenty-two, was about to have his first pro match, in a bar in Long Island.
-----------------------------
"Haunting The Chapel" by Slayer hits the speakers. 0:11 in, Rufio comes through the curtain with a steel chair in hand as the fans boo.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall. Introducing first, weighing 287 pounds, Ron Rufio.
He bangs his head against the chair a few times before sprinting to ringside. He hands the dented chair to a fan at ringside that hits Ron with the chair. Dazed, Ron gets in the ring.
"If I had $1,000,000" by The Barenaked Ladies hits the speakers.
Announcer: And his opponent, weighing 140 pounds, No Legs Hooligan.
The crowd erupts as Hooligan wheels himself to ringside in a wheelchair. He flops into the ring and the bell rings.
Ron Rufio dominates Hooligan, even tossing him outside the ring and hitting an elbow drop from the apron on the concrete. Eventually, Rufio pins him and wins the match. Uncle Owens only advice? "Next time, hook the leg."
-----------------------------
Ron Rufio has more matches in that bar over the next few years against wrestlers like Little John McClayne, a dog named Patch, and even some bum named Branden Harvey that was fighting for a sandwich. That match was watched by Branden Harvey's ex wife, Lisa, who's now married to Mr. Dangerous. But that wasn't where he wanted to be. And, one day, at the age of twenty-five, he gets a visit from Uncle Owen in the middle of the night.
Uncle Owen: Ron, I just came back from APW offices. I had a meeting with President Jeff and, while he was a little leery of it, he hired you as a favor to me. But, kid, I have to run. I made an enemy there. He wants to kill me. He's a wrestler named------
A shot rings through the night. a bullet flies through the head of Uncle Owen, barely missing Ron Rufio's head and a car speeds away into the night. Ron Rufio has a job in APW. But all he can think about right now is his uncle, the man he thought of as a father, and his mentor, is dead. He stares at the place the car was as tears fill his eyes.
