Inside the cramped studio of Four Ropes Live, Wyatt Crash sat uncomfortably in front of a bulky silver microphone hanging only inches away from his face. The show’s host, Jamie Dollin, swiveled his black leather chair back and forth, waiting for the show to go live. An intern sporting a Houston Astros hat motioned to Jamie that the show would be starting in five seconds. Once the countdown was complete, Jamie slid over to his microphone and cued the shows introduction. A few famous wrestling quotes coupled with a blaring theme song played throughout the airwaves. The second the theme ended, Jamie looked up at Wyatt and began to speak in his quintessential “radio voice”.
“Frequent listeners, occasional listeners, and accidental listeners. Today we have an absolute star joining us here at Four Ropes Live! Another wrestler will be placed inside the Four Ropes. That’s right! Whatever you do, don’t change that dial or hit the ‘x’ in the top right corner! Today we are joined by the one and only Wyatt Crash from the beautiful Phoenix, Arizona.” Jamie was doing his absolute best to keep the listeners interested in the segment he was setting up for. Legendary, amateur, and average wrestlers from all over the globe had been interviewed by this man. When he spoke, the people listened. Wyatt knew this, and if it weren’t for that, he may have never accepted the offer in the first place. Interviews were never really his top choice in terms of press coverage.
“Wyatt, we usually start off the show by asking the best question that one of our listeners have submitted to our twitter page. Here is a question submitted to us by a person known simply as @rassle_Brotha. ‘Wyatt, are you ever going to shave that dang old beard of yours?’.”
“First off, I just want to say thank you Jamie for having me on Four Ropes. I’ve heard a lot of great men and women speak through these very microphones, and I would just like to say it’s an honor to be doing the same thing. Oh, and I can’t help but say it’s about time I was given the invite! As for the beard, it’s here to stay. As my friends, family, fans, and I often say, ‘Believe in the Beard’!”
Jamie smiled from ear to ear as Wyatt instantly took command of the interview. His personality seemed to fill the room and then some. “That’s good to hear! I mean, I don’t know about everyone else, but I like the beard! Adds a flare of intensity to your image. I like to call the look, the scary homeless man. Only jokes. It sure is about time you were sent that invitation because the listeners, along with myself, would like to thank you for coming out here on this beautiful morning. We have been waiting for this day for awhile. Now time for the some of the serious stuff! Wyatt, you hail from Phoenix, AZ, what has being brought up in the Southwest given to your career?”
“Well, for one, it’s so darn hot down there all the time that I hardly ever sweat anymore. Ha ha, is that good enough of an answer? On a serious note, being brought up in the Southwest exposed me to a variety of different cultures and gave me a broad view of what the world was really all about. I couldn’t have picked a better place to have been brought up in.” Wyatt shrugged and gave a nod to Jamie.
“That’s good enough of an answer for me. The real question is whether or not the listeners wanted to hear it. You seem to be pretty calm and collected, wouldn’t have guessed that you would be so chilled out. I mean, in the ring you are known for bringing such pure intensity and ferociousness. We will get back to that statement in a bit. One more question that is a bit personal. The people want to know, what is the deal with the whole ‘XVX’ thing?”
Wyatt exhaled deeply. Since high school, people always were asking him why he chose to be a vegan and remain sober. “There is a long answer and a short answer. I’m guessing you want the long answer. XVX is the lifestyle that I adhere to. Through huge amounts of self-discipline, I have conditioned myself to resist temptation and gluttony. I believe that by living the way I do, I am only creating more positivity to be transferred into the world. There will never be an army of Wyatts but I would like to think that some of those who watch what I do, would consider taking on this lifestyle. The reason why I chose to do this is almost entirely due to the fact that while I was growing up, I had a tough time relating to my peers. I disagreed with their recreational drinking and drug use. I saw that these activities only led to harsh repercussions. As an adult, I have unfortunately witnessed some of these stories as they have progressed. The future is not pretty for these individuals. I have chosen to refrain from using animal products and byproducts for a few simple reasons. Firstly, I disagree with the consumption of meat on such an incredibly large scale, which most American’s choose to perpetuate. Secondly, I believe that there is no need for the continuous harm that is being done to these animals in order to make our lives slightly more efficient. There are vegan alternatives for almost anything that are just as good, if not better than the real thing. Thirdly, I never particularly enjoyed meat. To make one more thing clear. I will never judge one of my fellow wrestlers for not living the same way that I do. No matter what, a person is a person, and as long as they live a sound and moral life, then I have no issue with them.”
Jamie twiddled his fingers while Wyatt spoke. At first he seemed interested in what Wyatt had to say but by the second or third sentence he seemed to channel it all out. When he snapped back into reality and realized that Wyatt had finished speaking, he adjusted his position and leaned toward the microphone. “Well, that was way longer of a response than I am sure any of us expected. Very.. interesting stuff. So, Wyatt! You are known for hitting the gym with insane amounts of tenacity, what exactly is it that inspires you to go at it so hard?”
Wyatt sensed the man’s insincerity and quickly became bored with the interview. He often tried to remain as modest as possible but he was hoping that Jamie would have at least showed him the same amount of respect that he was showing the show. “What inspires me to go to the gym is the idea that one day, I will be standing in the middle of the ring, with one arm raised by the referee, and the other raised with a gold belt in my hand. I train as hard as I do simply so that I can become the best technical wrestler there ever was. I hope that one day my training pays off. Many wrestlers strive to be as good as their heroes, I strive to be better than mine.”
“You heard it here first, folks. Wyatt Crash delivering some passionate words to the wrestling world. Maybe this man will one day be better than his heroes. Watch APW this week and find out. Just a handful of questions left for you, Wyatt. Get ready. Your wrestling style is often described as fast paced, and technical. Do you see any changes in your style coming in the near future?” Jamie spun around in his chair and ran his hands through his medium length hair.
“Honestly, Jamie, I don’t see any changes in my style. Why fix what isn’t broken, you know?” Wyatt was counting down the seconds until he could leave.
“Point taken! We’ve seen you wrestle in Japan, we’ve seen you wrestle in AWF, and we have witnessed your impressive high school wrestling career. Wyatt, so far in your career, what has been your crowning moment?”
“I would say that my crowing moment has yet to come. I have won my fair share of championships but one day I wish to hold the biggest belt there is. I would like to be the World Heavy Weight Champion, at some point during my career. There aren’t enough little guys like me running around that division these days and I believe that I am just the guy to break that “big guy” mold and take the division by storm.”
Jamie smiled big as Wyatt set the tone for the rest of the interview. This was the Wyatt Crash he wanted to hear. The Wyatt Crash that fans around the world heard about and wanted to see in action. The Wyatt Crash that was confident, and could damn well back his words up. “I’d like to see that happen one day, too. I am sure the listeners out there in listener land would also like to see it happen. Maybe APW will be the federation to house that title reign. You never know, do you? Getting down to the final four questions. Is there anyone you look up to? If so, why?”
Immediately, a few names burst into Wyatt’s head. He pulled at his beard a few times, building tension, before answering Jamie. “Any personal heroes? I guess I have a few. At the forefront of my mind, Henry Rollins is usually standing there yelling at me and telling me to remain a clear-minded person. Henry was one of those people who inspired me to work out, and live a healthy life. He is also one of the most high-tempered badasses there ever will be. That adds major points in my book. Besides Henry, I would like to say that I look up to Neil Armstrong. A man who worked hard, and followed his dreams, which took him where no man had ever stepped foot before. I admire those qualities. Plus, I have a secret passion for anything outer space related. If I had to pick one more, I’d probably say Beyonce. From the Southwest, and well, just because.”
“Interesting picks from an equally interesting young man. I know all the ‘Single Ladies’ out there in listener land must be stuck to their seats listening to this wrestling purist heartthrob. Was that too much? Who knows? What has it been like for you so far, since your switch over from AWF?” Jamie held back his own laughter after his string of awkward statements.
“The switch has been relatively easy. So far, everyone backstage has been very helpful and friendly. I know that I shouldn’t fall for the ‘Mr. Nice Guy or Gal’ routine that everyone is feeding me but hey, for the time being, I am as happy as clam. Let’s hope no one tries to crack my shell just yet.”
“This is all very good to hear. At Four Ropes live, we only give praise to the folks over there at APW. They seem to be doing a fantastic job. Do you have any goals set for yourself in APW?”
Wyatt knew that the silly, and far too typical questions would be saved for the end of the interview. Even though he usually decided not to answer these, he gave them a shot. “I have a few goals set for myself in APW. I plan on winning my debut match. After that, I have set a few goals revolving around my progress in the promotion. I am hoping to get drafted to one of the bigger shows. If that all works out and they like what I am doing for them, then maybe one day I will cash in my hard work and training for a title shot. Let’s find out.”
“Wyatt. I just want to say that it has been a pleasure interviewing you here on Four Ropes Live. You are welcome back on the show anytime. Hey! If you can get me some tickets to your debut that would also be a pleasure. Now time for the final question. In three months time, where do you see yourself in APW?”
Wyatt laughed to himself. They always do this, he thought. “I mean, I think I just answered this but I’ll give it another shot. In three months time I see myself with gold around my waist. I see myself as one of the promotions top wrestlers. How’s that?” Wyatt removed his headphones and stood up from his chair.
“Good enough for me, and with all the listeners we have right now I’d say it’s good enough for the wrestling community, too! Once again, thanks for stopping by Wyatt! Up next, we asked our listeners what rules they thought should be removed from professional wrestling. Those answers when we return!”
Wyatt shook Jamie’s hand and casually exited the room.
