Gooch Farm - 10:46 A.M.
The chores are done on Gooch Farm. The nice days of the Arkansas spring are turning in to humid heat in a PossomGrape summer. The work of Buck's back is producing a good yield and things appear to be going in the right direction...with the farm. Lately Buck's wrestling career has stalled. He's been attacked. He's been hurt. He's been losing...but he's optimistic. He's learning and, even though he's still a rookie, his best days are ahead of him the more he learns...and he never stops learning.
A dinner chair in the bathroom is an uncommon occurrence in any house, but tonight it seemed appropriate. Buckson Gooch is sitting in the chair, same dingy overalls, no undershirt. Annabelle stands over Buck and is dabbing his forehead with a clothe. The rubbing alcohol stings the large wound on the top of his forehead, right below the hair line. Buck flinches a little, and Annabelle knows that the wound is getting dirty.
Annabelle Gooch: Buck, you need to be putting a bandage on this. Especially when you're out working in the dirt.
Buck doesn't say anything.
Annabelle Gooch: It won't get you very far to be sullen with me. I was just as happy when we were poor as we are now that we have some money. It does tear me up to see you in this type of condition. I hated it when we were young and stupid and you were fighting at the bars. I thought we would be past this forever. I don't need a lot of money. I need you.
Buck seems to relax. The words have taken the stubbornness out of Buckson Gooch. It melts away with the sincere nature of Annabelle's comments.
Buckson Gooch: I know, Annabelle. I know you would love me if we lived in a mansion or had to move into the truck. I'm doing this, not to gain your love or admiration...I'm doing this for the family. Tommy Knox is trying to use me to catapult his career. That's not going to happen. He did a great job of attacking me when I wasn't looking...he won't be able to do that when we are face to face. This week will be a taste of what he'll have in store at Test For The Best.
Annabelle puts a layer of neosporine on Buck's head and applies Gauze.
Annabelle Gooch: I just don't want you to get hurt.
Buck sort of glares up at her.
Buckson Gooch: Annabelle, I understand that you want me to be safe, but this isn't just about money anymore. It's about pride. This man has tried to take my livelihood...not just wrestling, but putting me out of action to where I can't even maintain the farm...he will have to answer for this. I'm sure he'll cry that I need the League to back me up...I won't need the League to stop him in his tracks. He chose the wrong member of the Overdrive roster to target...I made a great friend, but I make an even worse enemy.
Buck shivers at the cool touch of a damp clothe from the hand of his wife.
Annabelle Gooch: I know you, Buck. I know you aren't going to back down and I know you aren't going to listen to me. Out of all of your admirable traits, this is one trait that I don't really appreciate is sometimes you just don't listen to me.
Buck waits for a second trying to find the right thing to say. He knows better than to blurt out the first thing that comes to his mind. He instead waits for the initial aggravation to leave and really centers in on the point of her comment.
Buckson Gooch: Annabelle, I love and I respect you...I just have to do this. There's some ways that a man cannot be pushed and Tommy Knox has done that. You have to allow me to stand up to him so he doesn't take his actions a step further and end someone's career. I could come home and leave wrestling behind. I could take care of the farm and we could live comfortably for the rest of our lives...but what if Tommy Knox breaks the next guy's neck in an attack. Tommy Knox is ruthless. I'm not only defending my honor, but hopefully I can curb Knox's sadistic appetite. Much like how a bully will shut down when faced with adversity. I want to give Tommy Knox the beating of his life. He may never be good and get the cheers from the majority of the crowd...at least he may be more inclined to decide to play by the rules.
Annabelle Gooch: You mean people still cheer for him?
Buckson Gooch: Absolutely. There are some fans that have a blood lust that will cheer for serious violence...these are also the same people that go home and kick the cat and molest their dog. Tommy Knox, even though I don't believe he's the kind that would harm an animal physically or sexually, is the kind of guy that's violence could lead others to join him. Tommy Knox could very well start a revolution here in APW...it HAS to be me that stops it. It has to be me that lets him know that this behavior isn't acceptable. Tommy is an excellent wrestler and was a great partner...He's a polished wrestler with more heart than just about anyone...He could very well be headlining Rasslemania next year...but this approach he's taking to the industry will only cause trauma. I can teach him that his approach is the wrong way...He's good enough that he doesn't need to sneak attack people. His ability is enough. I understand his desire for attention, but his ability will take him to the top.
Annabelle wipes that last bit of blood from Buck's face. She can see the passion he has for this and understands what he's saying. He loves her with all of his heart, but he is willing to put his life on the line to help someone he cares for. This is going to be a case of tough love...and he's going to go through with it.
Buckson Gooch: This week, Tommy will get a little taste of what's coming to him. He can attack me and hit me where it hurts...but he won't kill my drive. I'll show up to Test for the Best with my leg in a cast if I have to. I'll do whatever it takes. Niobe will have her hands full with Jace Savage. Niobe and Jace are two of the bright starts of Meltdown. They will have the chance to showcase their ability with Gooch and Knox. I know that the Overdrive brass will be watching this one.
Annabelle leans down and kisses Buck on the mouth and then on the forehead.
Buckson Gooch: What was that for?
Annabelle Gooch: You're a good man, Buckson Gooch. Even in exacting revenge, you still have others in mind. Just come home to me in one piece?
Buckson Gooch: I promise, Annabelle.
Annabelle leans down and kisses Buck one more time and the camera fades out.
