The audience is slowly piling into the U.S. Airways Center in beautiful Phoenix, Arizona. Coincidentally, the same town that the debuting Wyatt Crash resides in to this day. Most of the fans are becoming friendly with their neighbors, and exchanging the occasional remark about what they are hoping to see on the episode of Meltdown ahead. The mood surrounding the center evokes a strong feeling of “classic” wrestling. Everyone in attendance seems to be in a good mood, and are showing a great deal of respect for the event that they are attending. Suddenly the oversized video screen above the entrance ramp fades to black. The crowd goes silent and simultaneously all turn their heads to the screen. Static followed by a few flickers span the entire screen. Suddenly, the PA system begins to play the chilling guitar intro to “An Inquest Concerning Teeth”. The distinguished voice of a narrator begins to speak over the music.
“He is a man that is feared world wide.”
The screen changes from black to a clip of Wyatt Crash walking down an entrance ramp in what appears to be Japan. An explosive crowd surrounds him, that is chanting something along the lines of, “WATCH OUT! WYATT’S HERE! WATCH OUT! WYATT’S HERE!” The shot changes to Wyatt annihilating a man his size with a terrific clothesline. Wyatt is dripping with sweat and blood from his forehead. The other man seen in the footage delivers a mean suplex to Wyatt, just as picks Wyatt up from the ground and begins setting Wyatt up for another suplex, Wyatt reverses the move, delivering his own belly to belly suplex. The last clip in the sequence displays his opponent tapping out at the fate of Wyatt’s “Low Card”.
“A man who stands up for what he believes in, no matter what the consequences may be.”
The screen shifts the image to some earlier wrestling footage of Wyatt Crash. He is shown wrestling in his red and blue high school singlet. It appears to be a much younger, less defined Wyatt Crash. He hops up and down on a traditional style wrestling mat, slapping his chest a few times. Wyatt is shown locking up with his opponent, and then tossing him to the ground with a ferocious fireman’s carry slam. Wyatt follows up with an arm bar, causing his opponent to tap. The next clip shows Wyatt at his feet, with trophy in one hand, and the other raised in the air showing the large black ‘x’ painted on the back of his fist. The crowd surrounding him is exploding with excitement as Wyatt is announced as the state champion.
“He is a man with a vision. Tonight, he becomes a man who wrestles under APW, for the people of APW.”
Wyatt is shown working out at the gym, alongside his trainer. He is shown benching an incredible amount of weight for his size with great difficulty accompanied with sheer tenacity. His trainer is yelling directly in his face as he continues to run on the treadmill, finish his dumbbell sets, and plow through his pull ups. Among many other things, the crowd seems to be catching on to the supreme athletic ability that Wyatt Crash has. Some members of the audience are beginning to turn to each other and proclaim their excitement for APW’s newest talent. As this goes on, a final clip of Wyatt Crash is shown on the screen. It appears that Wyatt is being targeted by three men in the ring. As they all charge at him, they immediately corner him and begin to pound on his head and chest simultaneously.
Quickly, Wyatt breaks free and throws one of the men over his head and out of the ring. While the other two stand there in astonishment, Wyatt hits them both with a double clothesline, followed by a series of fast paced kicks. Wyatt exploded with energy as most of the crowd chants his name. The screen fades to the live image of Wyatt Crash facing a wall backstage. He slowly turns around and stares directly into the camera. The look that is emanating from his body could only be described with one word, passion. Wyatt tugs at his beard a few times before being handed a microphone from someone off camera. The crowd begins to clap loudly, acknowledging the presence of their home town hero.
“Well, damn, does it feel good to be wrestling my first match for APW in the amazing city of Phoenix, Arizona. Did I mention that this was my home turf? I am sure you all can see from my smile that I am just excited as y’all are to see what happens tonight. I can guarantee each and every one of you, whether you want to see or you don’t want to see it, I am going to give you all a show you will never forget. Most of you already know that whenever I enter that ring, and stand between those ropes, there will be no mercy to show for. As for my opponent, and I know you are listening to me right now from that locker room, I have a few more things for you to hear.
I, Wyatt Crash, have a few things to show these people about myself, that I darn well know you don’t. Listen, Yanzel Holmes, you better be prepared to face one of the toughest opponents that you will ever face in your entire career. Hell, I may very well be ‘the’ toughest opponent that you ever face in one of the most sacred rings known to the professional wrestling world. As the critics constantly remind the fans of professional wrestling every month in the magazines and talk shows, I bring three things to the table that are facing extinction in our world. These three things are the key to my success, so far in my young life. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, that could ever take these three things away from me.”
Everyone in attendance had their eyes glued to the screen as Wyatt Crash stood back stage delivering his promo cut. Everything about this scene screamed momentous. Wyatt, and the fans all hoped, that these moments would continue well into the future.
“Listen close, Yanzel Holmes. The first thing of which I speak of is simply the fact that I bring a great deal of discipline into my life. Discipline, I have found, is one of the most necessary aspects of human life. Many of those who enter the wrestling world, foolishly enter lacking a significant amount of discipline. I can tell from your last match that you are one of these people, Yanzel. I have conditioned myself to be able to withstand any pain or trouble that comes my way. I have acknowledged my weaknesses and made them my strengths. Tonight, when you stand in front of me and that bell rings, you will be given a lesson in the benefits of discipline. Unfortunately, for you, that will not be the only lesson that I will be teaching you.
There is much more to Wyatt Crash that makes me the man that I have become. Just as these fans around me honor the promotion that they have payed to see tonight, I honor the sport that I participate in almost more than anything else in my life. The honor and respect that I show the ring and those who participate inside of it, is so strong because of the give and take relationship that I have created with it. Every opportunity that you take from the ropes, the mat, the turnbuckles, and your opponent, requires the individual, whomever it may be, to give back to the sport of professional wrestling with everything inside of them. The honor must be restored, and tonight, Yanzel Holmes, I will restore the honor that you have failed to give back to the sport of professional wrestling.
Of all things that I will teach you tonight, Mr. Holmes, the one thing that you will have to leave with, is respect. Respect for the sport that you participate in. Every day, whether or not I have a match tomorrow or a month from tomorrow, I train harder than anyone else in this sport. Wyatt Crash is a man who respects this sport. I put this sport on a pedestal in my life. This is the activity that has made me the person that I am today. Regardless of my prominence in this promotion, I still treat it as if it is soul source of success in my career. When someone refuses to train as hard, work as hard, and live as hard as this sport requires all of those who participate in it to do so, they suffer the repercussions. Tonight, Yanzel Holmes, will suffer those repercussions. Tonight, Wyatt Crash will leave the ring victoriously. Tonight, the people of APW will begin to ‘Believe in the Beard’!”
The screen cuts out leaving the crowd clapping loudly. The faint chants of ‘Believe in the Beard’ are heard echoing throughout the hall ways of the building. Backstage, Wyatt hands the microphone back to the stagehand, and nods his head thanking the young woman. Men with microphone and camera equipment surround Wyatt, and commend him for his promo. Someone motions to throw Wyatt a water bottle but he refuses the offer and continues to walk toward the locker room. Wyatt starts to walk at a faster pace in order to be alone in the halls of this familiar venue. Finally, he reaches the locker room and takes a quick turn through the door. He walks over to one of the brown benches and sits down in front of a locker marked with only his first name on a piece of masking tape.
Wyatt acknowledged this as a sign of his new beginnings in APW. As he sat there on the bench, a storm of thoughts swam around his mind. He was excited to be facing someone who had already participated in APW. Even though Yanzel seemed new, Wyatt wanted to get a taste of what this promotion had to offer for him. He had already set a list of goals for himself in APW. He hoped that soon enough he would be able to get booked on a pay per view, and maybe one day soon be considered good enough to earn a title shot. He had to do everything that he was capable of in order to impress the APW staff. Tonight would become a significant moment in Wyatt’s career. He hoped that the fans would enjoy his wrestling but more importantly he hoped that the other wrestlers on the roster would be inspired to wrestle against him.
Wyatt hoped that tonight he would make another significant impact on the wrestling world. He began to tape up his wrists as a few other wrestlers entered the locker room and began to change behind him. Wyatt overheard them talking loudly. One wrestler was exclaiming, 'how weird' he thought the new guy was. The other agreed and began to call him a string of insults. 'Sober freak' and 'tree hugger' began to make there way into the mix of remarks. Wyatt knew that they were talking about him. This hardly phased him. He simply continued to take a large black paint marker out from his back pocket and draw a large 'XVX' on the back of each of his hands. None of the criticism his fellow wrestlers gave him ever really made an impact on his psyche. Wyatt had heard it all before, and tonight, he planned on showing them all exactly why none of it even mattered at all.
