Sometimes you feel like you’ve gotten more than you wanted from something you’ve done. I know I feel that way after Test for the Best. I’ll probably be kicking myself for that until a certain someone decides to legitimately kick me repeatedly for doing so… After stealing a spotlight that shouldn’t have been mine… otherwise I would’ve earned the right to be there myself… it’s more appropriate that I’ve removed myself from sight for the time being.
I still need to address things going on of course… but that doesn’t necessarily require me to be parked in front of a camera in order to do so. When I’m at the show tomorrow night, I’m sure that I’ll be able to do plenty of that. I’ve got my first Tap Out title defence since winning the title about two months ago. With all that’s gone on as of late… that championship is really the only thing I have professionally… and I’m going to fight to my fullest in order to hang onto it.
I don’t know where I stand with Aubrey now… I know she isn’t happy with what I’ve done. I can’t assume that she got my back now or ever again after my betrayal. Similarly within the New Sindicate, I don’t know where I am with them as a group either. Christian and I may now be on one side, Aubrey on another and Terry… I don’t even know where he could stand in relation to the rest of us.
Until everything else becomes clear once again, I’ll just have to focus on important matters as they come up. My Tap Out championship reign is very important. It’s my anchor in this business right now, so you’d better believe I’m going to do what I can to keep it this week. I need whatever anchor I’ve got to keep from getting swept away by the currents I’ve unwittingly unleashed.
Emerald Assassin and ‘the Smooth One’ William Williams… you’ve both been set upon me in order to try and take my anchor from me. Assassin, you are a potential danger to my reign. You’ve managed to string together a run of success. It hasn’t come against big stars of this company as of yet, even though you do hold a victory against myself and Aubrey. You didn’t beat either of us directly, so it doesn’t hold nearly the weight you might hope it would. You steadily gained momentum during your Meltdown tenure and you’re going to need every bit of it if you intend to get past me. Williams… I don’t really know what to think about you at all. I know that I should treat you as a dangerous and credible threat to me in the ring tomorrow night, but I am constantly underwhelmed by everything about you: your constant pandering to the crowds, your espousing of Dying Breed ‘values’, your pathetic and shameless attempts at product placement. None of that has made you a viable contender for anything in the ring. You’re a rookie, and one thing you should be doing is listening to the veterans around you. So do yourself a favour. When I speak to you, shut up and actually listen. I’ll do more for you as an opponent than Bailey will ever do for you as a partner.
Assassin, your first big opportunity placed before you isn’t this match here tomorrow, it was the match you had several weeks ago on Meltdown when you were competing for a spot in the Test for the Best tournament. It wasn’t a match that played out in your favour that night. You might decide to pin that on the interference of Red Scorpion and how he managed to swoop down and nab you, removing your from the equation. But that is really just an excuse that won’t help you move forward. I’ve had plenty of matches over my career tainted by outside interference of the years, but still nothing matters other than the end result. In your case the end result was a failure to achieve victory, even though you were not legitimately defeated.
You’ve done quite well in other encounters though. Beating other competitors who’ve gotten in your way, but as I said before, which of these opponents have really been serious contenders on Meltdown or elsewhere? Who have you personally defeated that has prepared you to defeat someone of my calibre here and take my championship for your own?
Maybe that in itself won’t matter though. I’m sure it’s possible that you could beat me outright tomorrow night. Just because you’ve never done anything comparable before, doesn’t remove the possibility of it happening entirely. But that does mean it’s not something you’ve really been exposed to and had to deal with by yourself. No one can ever be sure how they’ll handle being placed in such a scenario until they find themselves there. You lack that experience. Conversely though, I’m not looking at this situation in regards to you with the arrogance that an experienced competitor might have. I’ve suffered rude surprises at the hands of rookies before so I’m not willing to dismiss you out of hand. You’re going to have your big test this week, and I will be the one to administer it.
One of the big questions you need to be able to answer is how confident are you in your submission skills? This isn’t going to be a simple match where you can just knock someone out or wrap them up in a pin for a quick three second fall. You’ve got to be able to break down your opposition and then push them to the point that they have to give up. I haven’t seen you display those kinds of skills in the ring to this point. Which means either you’ve been hiding them up until now, which is a distinct possibility, or you never had much interest in using them before. Either way, you’re going to be relying on something that you haven’t had to use in your matches before. It might be enough for you to get past Williams though, but me? I’ve been training my whole career to fight in this style of match. From day one I’ve worked to be a solid mat wrestler focused on a technical base which leads right into a submission style. Fighting in matches that allow victory by submission only is second nature to me because I always compete with a submission victory in mind.
You’re going to have to beat me at my own game, or find a way to get Williams before I can do the same. You might be able to beat me on my own turf. Other people have, but I’m not someone who’ll submit easily. I’ve suffered through agonizing holds and maintained the resolve to not give in.
I honestly can’t say if you have it in you to take me to that point Assassin. And the other danger you face is that if you try to beat me that way, I’m quite capable of exploiting any weaknesses in your form and reversing the situation. This is certainly not an ideal situation for you, but I’d have to say that you at least stand a chance, even if it’s not a good one.
Williams however… you stand in a far worse position. You’re a rookie much like Emerald Assassin is, yet coming into this battle, you have nothing going for you at this time. All the members of the Dying Breed are on a bit of a slide. Bailey’s been humbled by Jason Kash multiple times and got bounced from Test for the Best qualifiers in the process. Hopkins managed to make a mark against Foul Play for your side, but as expected, having to face competition that didn’t help him draw upon his emotions, he came out flat and was left flat by A.C. Smith. And then there’s you. You’ve be missing for the last month or so after back to back failures. You were unable to make any sort of impression in the Knockout Gauntlet match as you got beaten by Young Mannie at Mayhem. Then you got knocked out of Test for the Best by Michael Lively and you passed on the second chance battle royal. So really Williams, unless you’ve been training intensely for the last five or six weeks in secret, except when you’re showing up to chat with Hopkins, what do you expect to accomplish with another free opportunity at glory?
I’ll tell you what’s going to happen. You’re going to live up to your nickname as the Smooth One, because once again, you’re going to go down in the ring really easily.
I told you going into Mayhem that you’re just a mouthy and arrogant punk who figures he deserves fame and glory. Mannie then knocked you senseless… not that you had much to begin with. After all, what have you done here in APW to warrant getting the benefit of the doubt in a big match situation? How many big matches have you managed to win here during your tenure? I’ve seen you blow three title matches that you didn’t deserve to be a part of. I’ve seen you lose pretty much every pay-per-view match you’ve been in. Every single time you’ve been in a pressure situation where you needed to raise your game to the next level, you’ve never been able to do so. You’ve buckled time and time again. You’ve shown repeatedly that you don’t have what it takes.
But once again, someone has decided that you deserve yet another chance, this time against me. You have no idea how much I’m looking forward to this match Williams.
This is going to be my first time getting my hands on a Dying Breed member since Bailey tried and failed to end my career. And no, I’m probably never going to forgive him for doing that regardless of how he justifies it. As such, I might just take out all of my anger and frustration about him on you Williams. You get to take one for your ‘brother’ here this week, and he’s going to sit in the back, quite possibly with, but hopefully without, his tag team championship beside him, and watch as I pick you apart. Then maybe afterward he and Hopkins can come out, collect your pieces, carry you to the back, and put you back together again.
You don’t need to worry about me being overly cruel to you though Williams. I’m going to go out there and with the aim to destroy you as quickly as possible in that ring, because I don’t believe that you deserve to be in the same ring as me when a championship is on the line. Emerald Assassin has my professional respect. I’m looking forward to testing him if he’s up for the challenge. But you Williams? I’m going to make you wish that you’d stayed in whatever hole you’d picked to hide in after Mayhem. And you’re going to wish that the Dying Breed was already dead so that you wouldn’t now have to pay for their sins with your body.
Tomorrow night is not going to be a happy one for you Williams. It’s a return to action you’re going to regret deeply.
I don’t plan for this to be a pleasant experience for either of my contenders tomorrow night. As I’ve said, I don’t have anything other than the Tap Out title to fight for now and I’m going to give everything I have inside of me to retain it.
I’ve had a rough couple of months to get to this point. Nearly forced from competition once again, being pitted against my… against Aubrey repeatedly in the hopes that we’d take one another out of competition, having to endure brutal matches while suffering through an injury that could easily sideline any competitor, and now… I have to wonder if all of this has finally stretched me to some sort of breaking point. For the last several months I’ve been fumbling my way through the dark and even now there is no light anywhere to be found.
Right now, I’m alone once again and this one item that holds meaning to me is in danger. I fought through so much to get to this point and I’m not ready to give it up to anyone here. You two have had it easy though. What hardships have either of you had to go through to get this opportunity? Assassin, this is your first week on Asylum, yet you’re getting a championship match right out of the gate. Why? Williams, this is your fourth title match for this belt. What did you do to deserve it? What did you ever do to deserve the first three? Why do you two get this opportunity when there are other people who might deserve the chance?
I’ve certainly never been handed anything here in APW. Every single title match but one I’ve gotten has been through a top contender’s match or a tournament. The last one was a rematch clause, and it still required that the opportunity wait until other teams had their shot first. I came to Asylum after an almost three month stretch as North American champion. I never got a title match right off the bat. I came here in February and I didn’t get an Asylum title match for three months, and to get that match, I had to beat three people for it. You two accomplished nothing and had a title match within a month on Asylum… and for this exact title too.
I’m not going to preach something like favouritism. Not at all. Instead, I’m going to put this to the two of you in a different manner. Out of the three of us, I’m the only one who’s had to work, truly work, in order to achieve success. I’ve always had to take a harder route to reach a goal. As such I have learned to come out and given my absolute best every time I come to the ring when there’s something on the line, because I’ve already had to invest more time and effort than others had to get there. As such, I will fight that much harder than my opponents. These matches aren’t freebies for me, they are always the culmination of a long struggle to get ahead, and that means I’ll give that much more, dig that much deeper, go that much farther to win.
I have everything invested in my runs to success. I treat every opportunity like it’ll be my only one, because it just might be. As such, I’m not even a year into my APW tenure and I’m a decorated multiple champion. That’s what you two are going to have to overcome tomorrow night.
Think you’re up for the challenge? Guess we’ll see.
